@@CosmicLifeAI A1: Yes you can use such bikes as a daily ride but for Europe you have to limit the power assistance speed to 25km/h and have to round the sharp edges. A2: Those back tilted seats are called recumbent seats and they are just the best! You can put a lot of power in the pedals and have full back contact with the soft seat. Especially for more than 5h of daily riding time you can really feel the advantages. You have no pain in the back :)
@@kilianweigand Thank you. I recently watched some solar-e-bike with small caravan to sleep instead of camping gear. Such small caravan might help to have a good sleep in any weather conditions, and spots. But also come with the effective length of the bike and weight. I am not sure which is more efficient for few weeks to months. :) I am planning to have an solar bike camping adventure with sufficient pleasure, and relaxation :)

I has been some time since I had a chance to ride Azub Twin but I remember it as not so easy with a second person and luggage behind me. I am amazed you were able to keep it stable with that panel on top. It must have been a challenge in crosswinds, no?
We love the Azub Twin! Once your are on some speed it is just so stable. It’s pretty insane how good it rides especially with more than 25km/h. We had 2 times struggles with +60km/h wind but other than that it worked just so well

I like your build. A lot of thought and ingenuity has gone into it! I have a Nazca Quetzal tandem that has been sitting in my house for a few years that I will convert to solar electric. What rear rims are you using? There seems to be a lot of incidences of wheel problems on tandems in the SunTrip and I wonder what are people speccing their bikes with? I have already purchased several 36 spoke Andra 40s.
Thanks and happy to hear that! Yes spokes and rims are a challenge for tandems especially with Hubmotor and high speed. @@kilianweigand Thank you for your reply! I have seen your second episode, which I very much enjoyed. If I am not mistaken, you have used the standard hub motor wheel with its original rim on your Azub Twin, not an Andra 40. And it looks like the bike is originally specced with Remerx rims. Going by weight = strength, Andra 40 is about a kilo and the heaviest on the market, so I'd say you cannot do any better. I did look up steel rims, but they are rubbish quality and not widely available. Your spokes were breaking. I don't know whether they were upgraded or changed but as an example Rohloff specifies ONLY Sapim Race double butted as opposed to Sapim Strong. I believe their idea is that a more compliant double butted spoke has a longer cyclic life than a thicker spoke. It may be worth going for quality butted spokes on the motorised wheel. ALSO I plan on putting a bit more weight on the front wheel by adding front panniers and placing the battery, water bottles and other heavy items forward. I'll also be running a front hub motor in a 26 inch wheel. It looks to me like a lot of tandem riders have too much weight at the rear of the bike. And finally, when building a wheel, equal spoke tension is very important for long life. Lets say you have 2mm of wobble but equal tension, this will be fine because you are running disc brakes anyway. Oh and finally, I would use at least 2 inch tyres to save the wheel system from impacts.
Decade back, saw an innovation bike tour commute rucksack. The side cargo pockets came off to become panniers on a bike. Got me thinking. On a 'bent bike, you could use the central rucksack as the seat back. There is always the question of security vs theft. Do you lock it to the bike? Or take it with you? Typically, good for bike = bad off bike and v.v.. And thusly I cut the Gordion Knot!

At first glance I think there is a bit of an issue with the bags, does not seem very aero to have two pairs, one pair up front and one behind, hitting the air twice. Other then that, well done.
We know 6 bags are a lot but we had our batteries inside two of them and racing bikes for 4 weeks means carrying more than on a one week bikepacking trip. Also with the racestart set on april we had winter and summer clothes with us… not ideal but we couldn`t find a solution for that. It's actually not very dangerous. We can control the bike very well and we have developed an adjustment system for the solar panel that allows us to rotate the panel horizontally and have a small area exposed to the wind.

@@kilianweigand that tells me nothing. If you have to reach from 0 to 2K meters through a distance of several kilometers what it matters is the average inclination throughout the race. It's different to let say climb up to 2K on 40% inclination using a short path versus 8% taking a longer one.
@@kilianweigand that agrees with what I say. But again, you don't mention the average inclination though it seems that 50Km of TOTAL elevation throughout a 7500km race makes a small average inclination and therefore electrical motors along with muscles can do the job. The sun isn't always up there and you can't have a heavy load of batteries so the muscles are the main source of energy.
not to take away from a great event and no doubt huge effort, but wouldn't an unassisted lowracer recumbent with a streamlining tailbox be able to beat everyone there? quick Kreuzotter calculator calculation says 100 watts on flat ground is 31 km per hour even with 30 kilos of luggage in the bike. of course you have to correct that for poor quality tarmac, wind, and a shitton of climbing mountain roads, but with the theoretical ideal conditions that's 400 km a day on flat ground under 14 hours? just seems like it'd win if only by a hair, as 313 a day is the number to beat. that is if the rider is - as much as you can call someone who's able to ride 400 hours a month - not exceptional. am i missing something? i do think these solar bikes are very cool, but i also wonder how Jean-Marc Dubouloz would have done without any electricity.
I know what you mean, but racing for 30 days is very different to riding for just one day. Especially the long term comfort of solar bikes is very nice. I also have to mention that Jonas and I are both 19 years old, work full time and are not professional athletes. It's not just the physical test, but also the development of your own bike that makes it so unique and interesting.

Crosswinds don’t effect us that much, because we can make it horizontal with just 2cm attack front for the wind.

Yes it`s a Solarbike Race with fixed riding times. All participants have to give their own physical power to the pedals as well.

It's actually not very dangerous. We can control the bike very well and we have developed an adjustment system for the solar panel that allows us to rotate the panel horizontally and have a small area exposed to the wind.

We are using two 310W SunMan Panels -> 620W in total

@@kilianweigand that tells me nothing. If you have to reach from 0 to 2K meters through a distance of several kilometers what it matters is the average inclination throughout the race. It's different to let say climb up to 2K on 40% inclination using a short path versus 8% taking a longer one.

But again, you don't mention the average inclination though it seems that 50Km of TOTAL elevation throughout a 7500km race makes a small average inclination and therefore electrical motors along with muscles can do the job. The sun isn't always up there and you can't have a heavy load of batteries so the muscles are the main source of energy.

not to take away from a great event and no doubt huge effort, but wouldn't an unassisted lowracer recumbent with a streamlining tailbox be able to beat everyone there? quick Kreuzotter calculator calculation says 100 watts on flat ground is 31 km per hour even with 30 kilos of luggage in the bike. of course you have to correct that for poor quality tarmac, wind, and a shitton of climbing mountain roads, but with the theoretical ideal conditions that's 400 km a day on flat ground under 14 hours? just seems like it'd win if only by a hair, as 313 a day is the number to beat. that is if the rider is - as much as you can call someone who's able to ride 400 hours a month - not exceptional. am i missing something? i do think these solar bikes are very cool, but i also wonder how Jean-Marc Dubouloz would have done without any electricity.
I know what you mean, but racing for 30 days is very different to riding for just one day. Especially the long term comfort of solar bikes is very nice. I also have to mention that Jonas and I are both 19 years old, work full time and are not professional athletes. It's not just the physical test, but also the development of your own bike that makes it so unique and interesting.
