  • Ross Hauser, MD discusses how impingement of the vagus nerve in the neck can trigger symptoms relating to the ability to swallow, choking, difficulty breathing, and vocal changes that seem to have no other cause found by traditional medical examinations for the presenting symptoms.
Do you think your symptoms may be related to neck instability and want help from our team here in Fort Myers? We'd love to see you here as a patient! Contact us through www.caringmedical.com, call us at 239-308-4773, or email info@caringmedical.com.

I honestly do not think there is another doctor in this country who truly understands, AND can explain the vagus nerve and cervical instability as well as Dr Hauser can. I have seen Drs whose eyes glaze over at the mere term cervical instability or Vagus nerve damage or dysfunction. Ortho and/or neurosurgeons, who should know all of this know nothing! I had one Ortho Dr tell me cervical instability was "not a thing". If one reads any message boards, or even reads the comments under Dr Hauser's very educational video's it is so clear how many people are suffering from a condition that "is not a thing". Thank you for your continuing education through these video's Dr. Hauser.

This is the single smartest physician I have ever heard speak! My daughter has every single symptom of cervical instability; from the painful and physical presentations to the immune, gastro , neurological and psychological disorders. For years, we’ve tried multiple doctors who haven’t taken her symptoms seriously. We are now going to try prolotherapy as I feel this will result in correcting some or perhaps all of her issues. What an intelligent, knowledgeable physician who truly understands the human body as a whole. Thank you!

@Cassiopeia ... Has your daughter had an MRI done of her brain and cervical spine? Reason Im asking is because of these symptoms along with you saying psychological disorders, she might have what I do, which is called Chiari Malformation. I also have craniocervical instability. My instability and the Chiari is caused from a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. If she hasn't had an MRI done, I really strongly suggest you insisting to her Doctor that she get one. Hugs momma!

My ENT wants to remove my uvula, move the hyoid bone, and remove the tonsil-like glands covering the back of my tongue down to the epiglottis (which has definitely been getting stuck as you described). The risk is that surgery can severely worsen my choking, voice loss, etc., especially during the long recovery, and sometimes there is permanent nerve damage.
***Can prolotherapy sometimes prevent the need for those types of surgeries?***
I filled out your online forms Sunday night, had an ablation (C4-6) Monday, and got the news about surgery from my ENT Wednesday. It's gonna take a minute to get everything arranged, but I hope to work with you as soon as possible! Thank you, and lots of love to your team!

Hello Dr. I have been having these issues and all started with neck pain an headaches 5 months ago. I feel my neck pain is mainly in the c1-c3 area. The doctors I talked to do not understand what is going on, my May 2023 cervical spine MRI was normal.
Can this kind of cervical instability also cause arm and leg neurological problems?

  • @AngelaGWillis

I occasionally experience where I am swallowing (anything from drinks to food to saliva) and suddenly it feels blocked off, like it just won't go anywhere. It just sits for a second. But it's not a feeling of choking. I have noticed that as soon as I feel that feeling that if I concentrate on swallowing, it will go down. Based on what Dr. H has said, I assume it's my epiglottis not working right.
Why are some of the branches of the vagus nerve affected and not others? Is it based on where along the spine the nerve may be 'kinked'/'blocked', 'twisted', 'pinched', etc?

Do you think cervical instability could be the root cause of LPR? I had/ have it since ‘21 and while lifestyle and diet changes have helped, I aspirate in my sleep, I choke for no reason I’ve been a dental hygienist for 23 years and my neck is in horrible pain. I have most of the symptoms you mention in your videos. But so many people have LPR and it’s either undiagnosed or not managed. My chief complaint was ‘I can’t breathe’. I need to come see you.

Hi Dawn - great question, it is possible. Dr. Hauser wrote an article on this topic. I will provide the link below but essentially he states, that cervical instability can cause digestive issues like GERD and LPR and shares a patients case.

Hi, Doctor, I hope you can help my 76 year old sister who’s been dealing with dysphagia. We suspect the problem is she has been on antidepressants for a long time, maybe 10 years. Takes minimal doses now because she’s been cutting down gradually. The thing is her problem is progressing rapidly, takes her a long time to have a meal and can’t stop coughing during the whole time. Can’t have a regular phone conversation without having to spit constantly, her voice changes and we have trouble understanding what she’s saying. Has been losing a lot of weigh, it’s been only a couple of months since she started showing symptoms. Has been to the doctor already, he ordered a cat scan and referred her to a gastroenterologist. I’m afraid she’s gonna be misdiagnosed. Is there a better, faster, cheaper way to know what the source of her problem is? Thanks in advance, we live in Mexico btw. Cheers
