    Waking up, breaking out
    This is what it's like to be free
    Rip it up, tear it down
    This it what it means to be free
    Jet sounds a distant roar behind you
    As you try to clear your head
    You start to look and answers find you
    Your inner purpose lies ahead
    One step to calm the storm inside you
    Unlock the secrets in your head
    Not another day, no more confusion
    No more living like the dead
    --"Waking Up", Julient-K
    So very fitting, I think.

    Money Python's 'The Life of Brian' is more historical than people realise.

    • @tehspamgozehere
      @tehspamgozehere 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I only sent a mail to Seth just the other day suggesting he might want to look into Life of Brian. I provided links to the post-viewing interview/debate with the two religious leaders who were going on about "tenth rate" and "will be quickly forgotten", and of course to the conference of biblical scholars only a few years ago who were using Life of Brian as a teaching tool due to how accurate it was in most places. And inaccurate in one or two others. Yeah, a room of mostly-faithful scholars using the "tenth rate" "quickly forgotten" movie as a teaching tool thirty five years later. And us here fourty years later still talking about it. I'm really hoping TAA can do an interview with Cleese while he's still active. He's done a few TH-cam interviews before afterall so he seems open to the idea, and it's been a while. Not sure he'll be with us for a 50th anniversary.

    Your rundown of a Pentecostal church service had me in stitches! That was so dead-on I felt like I was transported back to 1988 when I was in high-school and unfortunately forced by my folks to go to one of those churches! The speaking in tongues thing always threw me for a loop! Especially the guys that would jump up in the middle of the service and then the 'interpretation'! UGH! lol..thanks for the nostalgic laugh today!

  • @magicalsimmy
    @magicalsimmy 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I knew a guy who spoke in tongues who interpreted himself. He told me, "God has revealed to me - you WILL marry one day, but you will have strife because you ask too many questions & don't submit as a woman should." He then told me to leave the room so he could tell a friend what God said about MY future marriage (apparently God would rather gossip about you with your friends). She wasn't allowed to tell me until "God told her to." She still hasn't told me anything. Glad I left when I did. LOL!

    After not believing for a year, the phrase "worldly music" (38:55) is still such a horrible trigger for me. Upon hearing it I instantly felt this incredible compulsion in my brain.

    I live in the south east, so every year we get hurricane reports, and they're always the same-- First we get footage of people buying supplies, then footage of people buying boards and stuff for their windows, then the "Asshole in the Wind" report, some guy standing on the beach, telling us how windy it is. (Or isn't, if it's DAYS before the storm gets there!)

    I was subjected to a "hell fire" film when I was about 12. This was one of the craziest things I ever experienced. Being raised catholic it was very disturbing and I kept my head down most of the time. My friend who brought me was totally consumed by the film and taken to another room to repent. I just couldn't wait to leave and that was when I realized all religious belief was insane. Anyway, love your site and I recommend to all my friends.

    In my “Questions for Christians” playlist, I asked that question. Every time a disaster happens, someone calls it a miracle that it wasn’t worse. A disaster wipes out 300 people and someone calls it a miracle that it wasn’t 400. But when it DOES wipe out 400, someone calls it a miracle that it wasn’t 500.

    A note on the Toronto church:
    To give you an idea of who they are like:

    Fun thing about "interpretation of speaking in tongues": The resulting messages are always along the lines of "The lord really wants to strengthen our faith today". It's NEVER "Peter McArthur, after the service you will find a $100 bill in the attic, and you will use it to buy some flowers for your wife, and as a result you will have sex for the first time in a year."

    I remember the interpretations and the shouting in tongues at church, I was always scared God would inform everyone of what a sinful teenager I was. I also remember speaking in tongues myself but it was usually music that set it off and it was always quiet... I could probably still do it today despite being an atheist, all it takes is the right emotional state.

    The Necronomicon is originally from the Cthulhu mythos where it's a book written by the mad Arab Abdul Alhazred, containing the secrets of the now banished or imprisoned Great Old ones and the Elder Gods and all sorts of eldritch horrors beyond human understanding. It's just such a great name that the Necronomicon has been used all over horror fiction.
    And of course there are people who actually think the Necronomicon (the Lovecraftian version that is) exists.

  • @kenichiotaku3693
    @kenichiotaku3693 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually, Seth, the necronomicon comes from the writer who pioneered the genre of lovecraftian horror, H.P. Lovecraft.
    In his writing The Necronomicon he talks about this mad arab named Ab'dul Alhazred who, based on occult visions, wrote a book describing every cosmic entity like Cthulhu and how to summon them. The book in the story is the actual necronomicon.

    Entertaining show.
    " Mockery is the natural response". There's something you can put on a t-shirt.
    You mentioned Orson Welles narrating 'The Late, Great Planet Earth'.He also narrated 'The Man Who Saw Tomorrow', which was a creepy documentary about Nostradamus.Even Welles scoffed at it after he had done it.
    I saw it as a teenager,and it was a depressing disaster,and end of the world fest.
    Fortunately,I figured out it was crap.James Randi wrote a whole book debunking Nostradamus.

    Might I suggest maybe a short recurring segment on your show where you highlight some batcrap crazy religious story or quote from the previous week. You could call the segment "Holy Crap!" or something. You could probably come up with a much better name but I'm guessing your listeners would enjoy such a segment.
    might be fun

    Great, as usual. I'm not surprised by your response to Wicca, though it did cause my mother to sit in the background yelling "they're not Satanists, you dimwit." Haha. I dabbled at one point with studying Wicca and related forms of paganism, but only as a last ditch effort to find something I could believe in. I blame it on living in a society that somehow sees it as better to believe in something strange and illogical than not have a belief in any mythology.

    The interesting thing is is in the book of acts, speaking in tongues of means that the disciples who have the Holy Spirit can speak their language, and the people who don’t understand your language can understand them. It is definitely not as mumbo-jumbo that these people claim speaking in tongues.

Well he is usually going to sleep very early, but at those camps they like stayed up all night. I know that I start laughing very easily if I am too tired. Even the stupidest jokes makes me laugh like crazy if I am tired, so I think that was one of the reasons for his laugh.

    The "Toronto Blessing" is nothing new. My mom was a member of Grace Bible Church in Honolulu from 1973 to 1978. People there experienced "The joy of the Lord" which involved laughing uncontrollably. As a teen, I instinctively knew that anything that over-rides a person's free will is wrong, but went along with it because my mom was abusive and I didn't want to endure ridicule or painful "godly discipline". And I was afraid of the invisible boogey-man she called "Heavenly Father".

    I went to Holy Week in Barangay in 2010. The is a passion play and the nailing is the final act of the play so to speak. A passion play is a reenactment of the final day of Christs life for those who don't know. They also take place across Europe and in the U.K. this is where theatre started. Anyway wanted to also point out both the Church and authorities are against the nailing part. These do not represent your average Filipino.

    Sin eaters were a real thing. Scapegoats too. Same idea of transferring your sins into something or someone else. In some places sin eaters are kinda outcast. A shameful necessity. In other places it's spread around to multiple people so everyone takes on the fun and I guess dilutes it. It's a really intriguing concept that would be really easy to go horribly wrong

    There was a girl that would get on the shuttle bus that I took from home to college. She would talk to herself and in gibberish. And it clicked one day that I realized she was speaking int tongues. When I told my dad, a baptist christian, about it, he said she was possessed by demons. I found it ironic because catch him on a saturday morning and he'll be praying, speaking in tongues, and studying the bible. I just found it so funny. One considered crazy and the other just another devout.

    @TheThinkingAtheist Honestly, I was surprised that you didn't seem to know much about the various religions/cults; then again, I'm not sure that's a bad thing. But I am glad I took a class on world religions back in college. I think it helped cement my atheism.
    BTW, H.P. Lovecraft wrote a lot of horror stories back in the '20's, and he made up several forbidden books from unholy ages, like the Necronomicon.
    "You should know better"--pretentious arrogance. I look forward to your next show.

    It is a bit strange that TTA thinks both hurting dogs for no particular reason AND treating rats well for no particular reason are both morally indefensible.
    If one has ever played with a tamed rat, they'd know they aren't all that much different from tiny dogs. And rats that grow up in a natural, country enviroment aren't likely to be anywhere near as sickly as those who grow up in the dirtiest parts of large cities. And if they are always treated well? They'd be as tame as deer.
