Nintendo - Dragon Warrior IV
SNES - Final Fantasy III (VI) (Shout out to Lufia II)
Playstation - Final Fantasy VIII (the one I keep going back to)
Playstation 2 - Xenosaga
DS - Toss up between Pokemon Black and Dragon Warrior IX (so many remakes)
3DS - Shin Megami Tensei IV
Hard to pick just one. Ask me again next week and I might have a different list.
Long live TB
I love Tuberculosis!
It's the best genre.
@@thewindofsuicuneYou beat me to it 😂
Yo! I've been watching your vids for a long time and it's wild seeing my art of Rika in the thumbnail. Thanks for crediting it. Take care dude ✌
That's wild. I saw Rika and clicked. And I had the thought "I'll probably never know who drew that"
PS1: Final Fantasy VII
PS2: Persona 4
PS3: Atelier Shallie
PS4: Persona 5 Royal
PSP: Trails to Azure (maybe this is cheating since the PSP version didn't come out of Japan, but the game still did eventually...)
PS Vita: Trails of Cold Steel (haven't played the second one yet)
SNES: Breath of Fire (haven't played FF VI yet)
Wii: Arc Rise Fantasia
Switch: Shin Megami Tensei V
GBA: Breath of Fire II
DS: Final Fantasy IV
3DS: Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
I haven't played any turn-based RPGs that originated on the other consoles.
My pick for ps1 is Legend of Dragoon. I can play that constantly
Love your channel mate keep it up. Nearly 100K 🎉
Maybe a Top 3 for every console in the future? Choosing only one is often so hard
He basically did that, mentioning his number 1, along with a couple more most people would pick.
The video is just his favourite RPGs on each console, not what he considers the best.
I like that you did choose SMT V for the Switch.
On the other hand i was a bit surprised by Super Mario RPG but since you took FF VI for the GBA i suppose it is fine. Even though for me personally the Golden Sun games are by far the best GBA output ever created.
And Lufia Legend returns is an excellent game! Unfortunately it is overlooked so often.
This is such a great video! Keep it up brother
PS1 - Tie between FF9 and Suikoden 2
Ps2 - FFX
PS3 - Tales of Xillia
PS4 - Trails of cold steel 4
PSP - Trails in the sky
NES - never played jrpgs
SNES - Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2
N64 - Never played jrpg
GC - Skies of Arcadia
Switch - Tie between Octopath and Xenoblade 3
Wii - The Last story
Pc - tie between Divinity Original Sin 2 and Baldurs gate 3
Steam Deck - Octopath Traveler 2
play paper mario in N64 it is very good!
thanks for the video these are all great games some i have yet to try out.
Ruined King and Monster Sanctuary are my favorite turn based RPGs for modern consoles.
Lufia Legends is not a prequel of the two SNES Lufia games - in fact, it happens 100 years AFTER Lufia 1 (the second game in chronology)
He has repeated this many times even after being corrected, it's really a shame he doesn't read comments. I honestly have no idea how or why he believes it's a prequel. The opening crawl literally says it takes place 100 years later.
Maybe he thinks it's a prequel because of the release on an "inferior" console system (other case of sequel on an "inferior" console I remember is that Star Ocean for gbc - a sequel for Star Ocean 2)
@@ChrisZerotani Probably because he doesn't really play most of the games he talks about or just skims them
Tokyo Mirage Sessions, while certainly better on Switch, is a great game even on Wii U. I was really hesitant at first given the idol culture stuff, but it ended up being way better than I expected.
Radiant Historia has one of the most original TB combat systems to date IMO.
Phantasy Star IV was the first JRPG I played in my life, when I was around 10, 11 years old and I love it to this day, changed my life.
So sad to hear none of the Mario & Luigi games were mentioned at all, not even as an honorable mention.
Excellent list, only games I would add that you missed were the Etrian Odyssey games on NDS, and my personal favorite JRPG on the DS The Dark Spire, though it is in a western RPG style, inspired by the Wizardry games
PS1: Final Fantasy 7
PS2: Final Fantasy 10
PSP: FF Tactics / Jeane D' Arc
NES: Final Fantasy
SNES: Chrono Trigger
N64: Paper Mario
GC: Skies of Arcadia
XBOX 360: Eternal Sonata / Tales of Vesperia
PC: Diablo II / Divinity Original Sin 2
GAMEBOY: Pokemon Blue/Red
Glad you gave some love to SMT. Personally the ps2 era is the gold standard. Im a weirdo and love smt 4.
Shadow Hearts 1 for PS2. I went to the store to grab FFX, they were sold out but they had a loose copy of Shadow Hearts 1. Not knowing what it was, I grabbed it and fell in love with it.
Love your videos Erick 🔥🔥
An excellent list, very commendable.
I just started Infinite Wealth, the battle system has a nice upgrade
NES: DQ4
SNES: DQ6
Sega MD: Shining Force 2
GB: Pokemon Yellow
GBA: FFT Advance
NDS: SMT Devil Survivor
Switch: Triangle Strategy
PS1: Breath of Fire 3
PS2: Shadow Hearts 1
PS3: Persona 5
PS4: DQ11
PS5: Octopath Traveller
It'd be nice to pick more niche titles but I'd be lying to myself lol.
PS1 has the best JRPG library IMO.
Thanks, now to decide which version of Radiant Historia to get.
I WAS WAITING FOR DREAMCAST and YOU PICKED IT!
I look forward to watching this.
PS1 - Legend of Mana
PS2 - Kingdim Hearts II
PS3 - Final Fantasy XIII 1
PS4 - Persona 5
PSP - Kingdom Hearts BBS
PSVITA - Persona 4
NES - Final Fantasy I
SNES - Final Fantasy IV
Switch - SMT V
Nintendo DS - Kingdom Hearts Days
Nintendo 3DS - Kingdom Hearts 3D
Kingdom Hearts aren't turn-based RPGs
neo geo comically only has one rpg at all (other than maybe a couple arcade style games that could be considered) and i believe its samurai shodown rpg
I love Eternal Sonata. When i bought my 360 in 08, this was the first rpg i bought
Incredible list
On PS1 there's only one UNDISPUTED RULER AND CHAMPION OF JRPGS. That is THE LEGEND OF DRAGOON!
We have such a different taste when it comes to video games so I often think to myself "wtf? why this?!" when I watch your videos but I still enjoy the content. How about making this kind of video but with strategy RPGs?
I think you should pick console exclusives for each.
Another great content when eating lunch
Nice list, but i'll bring back a nitpick again... that i think these lists are better if focused on exclusives, with the possible exception for games that first came to the west through ports instead of their original console. I say that after seeing the psp and gba picks.
Well, regarding the Vita, I'd say CS1 and CS2 are a really tight competition. CS1 was really well balanced for me, and CS2 had that early game high miss rate, but it offered more building options with amazing results.
Hey, Dragoneer's Aria at least has an incredibly underated soundtrack. Art is pretty nice too.
Holy hot take. I think even Kemco would be scratching their head with the Wii U decision. Xenoblade Chronicles X is rolling in its grave right now
Wow.. FFL2. Now I want to go buy a gameboy and try to find that game again. I was just a dumb little kid the last time I played that, but I remember putting in hundreds of hours (and batteries) just wondering around in that game.
I really enjoyed Eternal Sonata, but my enduring memory of it is that it was the game I was playing when my Xbox 360 got the Red Ring of Death.
i got RROD just after playing tales of vesperia for like the 30 first minutes
Favorite of mine on PSP was Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 and P3P ex aequo! It's like people forget about those V.C games. The third one had even been fully translate in english many yrs ago! I'm lucky to have one of the few original english V.K 2 copy! ( Yep, V.K is a turn based game...just a different kind of) Good choice games! I'm just the kind of guy who have many equal favorites... I'm always the one who can't even respond what's my favorite fruit! lolll Because i love too much of them equally! But agree all those games are amazing! ( Can't make a list myself...just can't put only 1 favorite)
Wish the e shop could make better list between turn based and active rpg combat.
lost odyssey is available via backwards compatibility not game pass (can be either physical or digital)
Didn't get to play any Phantasy Star games until Phantasy Star Online was introduced to the GameCube, then the collection for the GBA, now I can play PS IV on the Switch thanks to the (physical) copy of Sega Genesis Classics.
Made aware of the first Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel due to it appearing in the game Akiba's Trip (the Vita version) as an commercial within the said game. Played both the first two Cold Steel games on the Vita. What annoys me is that after finishing Cold Steel II, it *seemed* like Cold Steel III *would* be coming to the Vita as well because of the save data bit. But instead Cold Steel III and Cold Steel IV *would not* have a Vita version at all. Anyone else annoyed that Vita owners got shorted out of second half of the Cold Steel arc?
Dragon Quest series happens to be my go to franchise, wish we *would* get (offline version) DQX here in the States. But that's like hoping for lot of the Phantasy Star games to be localized as well, which is *not* likely to happen.
Pretty good list, I'd argue that Atelier Lulua and Shallie should be mentioned on their respective consoles.
Metal Dungeon is an absolute must play, got it.
...
🤣
I've never played most of those systems or games, so I'll take your word for it. I agree with Lunar as the best JRPG on the Sega CD.
I like how you used playstation footage for Yakuza like a dragon. Great choice though i also think it's the best JRPG on series X. Cause it didn't get a PS5 version day one. Just PS4 so it was a timed exclusive for that console actually.
I had Beyond the Beyond when I was a kid... yeah... got rid if that one pretty quick.
PS1 - FFVII. Say no more. Sukoiden II was great, a big improvement IMO on its predecessor. Vagrant Story is very good if you don't mind its really in-depth mechanics and lone protagonist with no party.
PS2 - FFX. Well the only JRPG on the PS2 I actually played but an instant classic
PSP - Tales of Phantasia remaster. I'm cheating as I know it's Japan only, and untranslated still at that, but I loved the fan-translated version on the PS1.
Vita - World of Final Fantasy. Never even owned a Vita but I have this game on Steam, it's great, and I know it's out on Vita too.
SNES - Chrono Trigger. Can't decide between this and FFVI either but that one came out on GBA too so I put it there. Can't go wrong with Earthbound either. Super Mario RPG is not bad although far from the system's best IMO.
Game Boy - Pokemon Blue I think was the one I had as a kid? Well loved it back then, but wouldn't go back to it or any other Pokemon game as an adult, to be honest.
GBA - FInal Fantasy VI Advance. Mother 3 is a classic too. FFV Advance is great if you're done with those two. Breath of Fire II Advance is not bad at all from memory.
Mega Drive - Phantasy Star IV. A true gem, and far better than its predecessors or maybe it's just that its predecessors have aged terribly. I'd put it up there with FFVI and Chrono Trigger.
Saturn - Panzer Dragoon Saga. Again the only JRPG I played on the Saturn, but a masterpiece, and I actually had a legit English-language copy of it, one of only 15,000 produced. Bought it in 1998 or 1999 when I saw it in the import store, after having completed the demo (disc 1 which came with a magazine) 10 times or so.
Well my list for the consoles I played could be:
Nes: dragon quest 3
GB: pokemon red
Master system: phantasy star
Genesis: phantasy star 4
Snes: FF6
GBA: golden sun
Ps1: FF7
PSP: Trails in the sky duology
Yeah I guess they're mostly very predictable choices
i always have a hard time choosing between ff6, chrono trigger, super mario rpg, and Mother 2 for best snes tbrpg. all common choices, but popular for good reason.
My list, only including consoles I've played:
*NINTENDO*
1. NES - Final Fantasy (then again, it's the only one I played as a kid)
2. SNES - Chrono Trigger
3. N64 - Ogre Battle 64 (not a trad. turn based game, but Paper Mario isn't my thing)
5. Gamecube - Baten Kaitos 1
4. Wii - N/A
5. Wii U - Tokyo Mirage Sessions?
6. Switch - Octopath Traveler 2
*SONY*
1. PS1 - Vagrant Story
2. PS2- N/A (I know... I skipped it!)
3. PS3 - Persona 5
4. PS4 - Octopath Traveler 2... again
5. PS5 - N/A
*XBOX*
1. OG Xbox - Digimon World 4? The only great RPGs on the system were Western (KOTOR & Jade Empire at the top)
2. Xbox 360 - Lost Odyssey 100%
3. Xbox One - Chained Echoes
4. Xbox Series - N/A... soon to be Octopath Traveler 2 though 😂
Regarding the Neo Geo, you wouldn't have been able to include that anyway. There are only three RPGs on the console and they're action RPGs.
Oh men i agree with the lost odyssey i watched my cousin play that and it made me tear up🥹
PS4: Like a Dragon (both RPGs) are better than any of the Trails series.
NES: I still say it is DQ3 or DQ4, just depends on my mood.
SNES: FF6 (story is still great & it most likely is still my number 1 overall) or SMRPG (great for younger audiences & good overall)
Wii: Had FF4:AY but I would say ARF is better
My god I love eternal sonata
DUDE. Awesome video. Thanks Erick
What are your thoughts on xenoblade chronicles for Wii?
The Last Story is on the Wii. I haven't played it though. Isn't it a good game?
Honestly never played Beyond the Beyond, guess that's my next quest.
OK, I'll share some. Most will match consensus because I'm that kind of guy.
SNES: Chrono Trigger
PS1: FF7 (yes really, hush)
PS2: Persona 4
PS3: FFX HD
PS4: Trails to Azure
Saturn: Albert Odyssey
PSP: Breath of Fire 3
XB360: Blue Dragon
GBA: FFVI
All of the PlayStations were tough except for the first. PS2 could have gone to FFX or Ar Tonelico. PS3, I didn't play a lot of turn based in that generation, didn't play Persona 5 until PS4. PS4 was the hardest. I just think Azure was better than all of the Cold Steel games and even Persona 5 Royal.
For Saturn, I just can't get in to Panzer Dragoon Saga. Albert Odyssey though, that's a gem.
Playstation: Legaia.
Playstation 2: Legaia 2 duel saga.
Only 1800 physical copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga were ever made. That, and the development was chaotic to say the very least. Such a shame it was released on a dying console as I believe it's an amazing game that could be even better with an HD remake. Also the OST is one of the best in gaming, absolutely phenomenal.
I owned the original on the Saturn, stupidly I sold it along with my game collection console, controllers, memory card and light gun, just to make way for the Dreamcast. It did actually get a remaster of sorts but digital only, I have it on the Xbox Series X but I believe PS got it too digitally.
My man’s hate for the Pokémon games is awesome lol. Honestly Pokémon Gold/Silver were masterpieces but aside from that and R/B they were pretty much skippable.
Here are some of mine:
PS1: It's a tough choice between Suikoden 2 and Final Fantasy 9. I give it to Suikoden because it's such as underdog.
PS2: Shadow Hearts: Covenant
PS3: This is where turn based RPGs are getting thin on the ground. My favorite is Ni no Kuni.
PS4: I have a very creative choice here. You can say... You'll never see it comiiiiiing...
PS5: I tried to avoid games released for multiple platforms, but exclusive turn based JRPGs are getting few and far between, so Octopath Traveler 2. Hot take: I actually prefer Final Fantasy 16, but it's obviously not turn based...
PSP: I go with the Trails in the Sky duology, even though I technically played them on Steam.
Vita: Persona 4 Golden on the same technicality. Once again I actually prefer an action RPG that is also an exclusive, Tales of Hearts R
NES: A hard pass, as I've played remakes of everything.
SNES: Ah, the battle of eternity... I go with Chrono Trigger
N64: Paper Mario, obviously, even though Quest 64 is a real masterpiece...
GameCube: Despite a tough fight with Thousand Year Door, I give it to Skies of Arcadia: Legends.
Wii: This is where I break the rules a bit. I have a bit of a weird take on the definition of turn based, if a combat is automated (like a certain franchise) I consider it turn based. Bottom line, I consider Xenoblade turn based and this is my choice.
Wii U: Going once again with Xenoblade (X)
Switch: I can very easily go AGAIN with Xenoblade (3), but just to change things up I go with SMT 5.
Gameboy/Color: I actually haven't played anything but Pokemon, so there
GBA: Final Fantasy 6 (I actually prefer it to Chrono Trigger, but it wasn't released on GBA, right?)
DS: Radiant Historia is one of those games worthy of buying consoles for.
3DS: SMT4A, tough I'll gladly put RH twice
360: Once again, Lost Odyssey is a game to buy a console for. After playing this masterpiece, you can expand your library to other RPGs like Blue Dragon and Infinite Undiscovery, as well as non RPGs like the Mafia trilogy (or, you know, just get the latter on Steam)
Literally any other Xbox console: Pretty much anything you can't play on a PlayStation, you can play on PC.
Mega Drive: Phantasy Star 4
Sega CD: Lunar 2, once again on a technicality (played it on PS1, of course)
Saturn: Panzer Dragoon Saga (there really isn't much of a choice on Sega consoles, right?)
Dreamcast: I prefer Skies of Arcadia, but by putting Grandia 2 here, I actually list the best version of both games. I mean, the PS2 version is just... no, just no.
I wonder what your favorite action RPGs are on every console. About half of mine would be Tales of games (Symphonia, Vesperia, Graces F, Hearts R and I'm pretty sure Berseria will also count)
I remember there being a Shining Force for Gamegear...
I’m still looking to find a game that captures the art direction and feel of Chrono Cross. Someone told me Baten Kaitos had the same art director.
Stick with the original, the remaster is censored.
Legend of Legaia is actually the best RPG of all time
Lost Odyssey is so awesome.
Hybrid heaven for the n64 is pretty cool.
Damn your 2 dad's must work off ao many TH-cam employees for you to have every console
Was Eternal Sonata an Xbox 360 timed exclusive? For some reason, I always remembered that as a 360 exclusive, so seeing it named on PS3 surprised me!
Oh, and damn that Octopath Traveler 2 soundtrack slaps! Best RPG on PS4 100%!
13:26 NIN reference!?
I had the same thought.
If a Kemco game comes out on top you know a consoles library is really atrocious.
I really enjoyed Beyond the Beyond... I think my favorite ps1 game would be Breath of fire 3
For the GameCube why didn't you added in Paper Mario Thousand Year Old Door. That turn base Mario RPG game is great that's even better the Paper Mario 64. Paper Mario 64 is still a good game though for the Nintendo 64.
For the PlayStation 2 why didn't you added in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. This turn base RPG game is fun with an enjoyable story and the visual graphics look really good even in modern gaming standards.
Nothing wrong with this list. Seems fair to me.
Mine would be
PS1 Suikoden 2
PS2 Shadow hearts series
PSP P3P
PSV P4G
PS3 - (never got a PS3 lol)
PS4 P5 Royal
PS5 Like a Dragon (haven't played infinite wealth)
SNES FF VI
GBA Golden Sun
NDS Chrono Trigger
3DS SMT IV
Switch Xenoblade Chronicles 1 (wait maybe that doesnt count). Alright SMT V
Gamecube FE Path of Radiance & Radiant Dawn (sorry I have to include them both)
Xbox360 Lost Odyssey
Anything else I don't mention, well I never owned the console or emulated it/played enough.
I would put Legend of Heroes I over Cosmic Fantasy 2 (The first Cosmic Fantasy only came to North America with the Switch release so I haven't played it yet.) for the Turbo Graphics. I like both games but I hate the ending of Cosmic Fantasy 2. I only played through the game once at a friends. I actually spent thirty years thinking I had screwed up somehow and gotten a bad ending. It was only when talking about how I disliked the ending on another channel recently when I found out the bad ending is the only ending. IMO the part of the ending I hate does nothing to improve the story, (It might have had it happened much sooner but with it coming as part of the ending cutscenes I feel it adds nothing). Worse since the story involve time travel the party fixing it would be viable but they don't.
The Best Turn-Based JRPG On Every Console (That Aren't Pokémon, a Pokéclone or Chrono Trigger)
Now try the best action-rpg jrpgs!
8:31 wait.. what? you forgot about Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn??
Oh yeah, so did I. That should've been picked.
Choosing P3P before Trails in the Sky?For the PSP?😢
I couldn't believe that.
Yeah, P3P was a subpar version of a great game and even by remake standards isn't as good as Persona 2 Innocent Sin or Persona 1's PSP remakes. Some of Langdon's choices seemed more motivated in including rereleases/ports because he couldn't fit the original release in his list.
@@TheBlackSeraph P3P is actually the better version, but all are overrated.
@@JohnSmith-ff2pb Can't agree to that. Being able to control party members is great, but the FeMC social links are ridiculous, point-and-click movement outside of dungeons.
Isn't Sakura Wars on the wii turn based JRPG or am I misremembering
my psp fav is breath of fire 3
I love RPGs my favorite type of games because I enjoy stories and battles. there are few I won't play most of them are game that have bad fighting and bad stories .
Just starting the video and well based on the title its gonna be hard picking😅
Kindly add chapters !
Can you make a video of every turn based rpg of all tine? K thx bye ill b waiting
You want just a list of every rpg ever made?
@@thatguymatt5816 yea shouldn't take too long
No "Last Story" for the Wii?
It ain't turn based.
@@grutfrut5817 Doh.
skies of arcadia for gamecube
Wat about sega Neptune?
Definitely play infinite wealth it improves on like a dragon in every way
