I don’t know all the in’s and out’s of the FF7 lore, but here’s what I do know (about storytelling in general): lore and an overarching plot work best when they just serve as ignorable background noise while the characters, their relationships, their emotions, and some sort of compelling real life allegory take center stage. To that end, Remake and Rebirth (until chapter 14) did a good job appealing to me as a person who is not knee-deep in Final Fantasy lore.

The originsl ff7 was presented like a concise, quick moving movie.
The remakes are presented like a tv series with much more space to breathe.
It wouldn't be hard to understand if everyone didn't enjoy freaking out about anything and everything.

    • @RushHourWeekend
      @RushHourWeekend  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think if you view the entire compilation as a tv series, not just the remakes, your analogy makes sense. You’ve got all this extra character development that people will love, but in regards to the plot, I don’t think any of the story elaboration is necessary. Kind of the same reason why I don’t like most tv shows; I’d rather they take that 10 hours of story and compress it into a 2 hour movie.
Here’s the part where I’m a hypocrite. I hate to admit it, but since this video I played Rebirth, and I think the character interactions are much more interesting than the main storyline.

    • @TheRealAhoy
      @TheRealAhoy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@RushHourWeekend People just like to freak out soon as they can, going the opposite direction that would lead them to stop and think. There's a lot of malaise out there over Hollywood not producing "original movies", and that attaches itself to all kinds of media, games included, and of course, the ff7 remake initiative.
If you prefer movies and not TV show type stuff, that's fair enough, but it's more like this. Movies move generally at a brisk pace, but TV has a lot more time to kind of look around. In the og FF7 (movie) they just swept by the GI Tribe really, the only function was they were an adversary during Red XIII's journey to find Seto. In Rebirth it's the same, but they decided to expand upon them considerably, giving them a big lore and didn't have before, not just for their own characters but also connected to the overall story, for they are the unit who concocted the black materia, which in the og it "just existed".
It's one thing being a hypocrite, and another thing realizing you've been one. Everyone is a hypocrite in various ways, but most don't ever want to admit it. Yeah Rebirth (and Remake) have far more fleshed out character interactions because they let it all breathe (like a TV show), they are giving themselves time to get to where they want to go so we have lots of little interactions here or there that the og never expanded upon. Yuffie has her own particular dynamic with everyone in the party, she was more ninja-like in the og, she wasn't that close to anyone, stayed on her own on the airship, had most 'affinity' with the group when she robbed their materia in Wutai etc.
Whether you prefer the older closed-off Yuffie or the newer more outgoing Yuffie is up to you, but it can't be denied she has way way more relevance this time around. (Not "you" in particular, all of us really - I like both Yuffie, I'll have to see what her being a brat when they get to Wutai is like before I make a decision)

    Hi Rush!
I want to say first and foremost that I really found your video to be quite entertaining.
I am also of the opinion that the Compilation, in its entirety, is an insult, but more than anything, to FFVII itself. The comments seem to be filled with Compilation fans probably coming over to hate comment and downvote as a campaign from some obscure Discord server or FB group, but do not be intimidated by a fandom known for being vile and insecure.
With that said, I want to invite you to a community oriented towards OG FFVII fans and content creators that are more aligned with the perspective of the Compilation being a blight on the IP. If you are interested, do let me know and I'll send the invite. To anyone who is a fan of Comp titles, you are also welcome to join! :D

Sometimes you just gotta say enough is enough. Final Fantasy VII was a big deal for the time but my god it's been milked so goddamn much that its appeal has wavered.
The remake is turning it into a parody of itself I swear to god.
I actually beat Dirge Of Cerberus not long ago because I wanted to settle a vendetta with that game
One thing you didn't mention about Dirge Of Cerberus is how broken the melee system is. If you shoot Azul the Cerulean with your gun he will barely even lose any health, you have to shoot the nearby barrels to hurt him... but if you walk up to him and melee him (which is annoying to do because of the lock on) you will kill him in literal seconds. What a stupid game.
Genesis literally exists for Gackt to cosplay as Dante from Devil May Cry 2 I swear to god.
I think the remake is the worst of the bunch simply because at least with Dirge Of Cerberus and Crisis Core, you could just simply forget they even existed. Also I'd argue that FF7 Remake has a worse combat system than both of them simply because the remake's combat system has so many freaking HP Sponge enemies where you deal crap all damage till you fill that stupid gauge they brought over from FF XIII and then you can suddenly dead decent enough damage. At least with crisis core, battles would end quickly and you could beat the game extremely fast, remake though... it's a colossal time waste. Not to mention Crisis Core and Dirge Of Cerberus are both sort of original stories that tie in with Final Fantasy VII somewhat, remake is just VII's story again but more bloated and a parody of itself where all the female characters are suddenly obsessively thirsty over Cloud for no freaking reason. I mean Tifa makes sense since she's a childhood friend and all that, aerith, I guess since it was similar in the original but freaking Jessie!? WTF? In the original Jessie was not like that at all, like why on earth is she so ridiculously obsessed with wanting to fuck Cloud? Why is that the only thing her entire character revolves around? It's so freaking lame.#
But yeah none of these games need to exist, I just don't care about them whatsoever, it's hard to look back on FFVII and not see as a convoluted mess at this point.

I tried to replay remake when it came to pc and I couldn't even finish it, I got to the part in wall street where Madam M sends you to do a buncha tasks before you get the dress. Finished the tasks went back to tell her and she sends me to do something else, at that point I felt like this padding was wayy too much. Went back to the original cuz its been a long time to see if they wasted your time running back and forth like that and nope, pacing is quite good in the original throw in a couple of graphic mods and a mod that adds voice acting to all the dialogue and I'm having way more fun with the game. Crazy how random battles feel less like a time waster then the run around Remake puts you through.

    • @RushHourWeekend
      @RushHourWeekend  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I get what Square was going for with Remake - they wanted to immerse you in this world by developing all these extra characters - but better to have that as optional content. That way, players that don't really care about these characters can skip these quests, and players that do care can tackle as much of it as they like. I think visiting Jessie's parents and the entire motorcycle segment could've been a sidequest for players that want to learn more about Jessie. That way, side quests in the game would've actually been interesting, instead of finding missing cats.

    • @timothyn4699

agreed the pacing is not great at least in remake pt1 (haven't tried pt2 yet). There's certain sections I wouldn't want to play again in R, and for that and the pacing, it feels more like a rental than a classic game you could play over and over again.
R1 graphics are great, and it is neat to see more ff7, but I agree ff7 is just so good all around.
I'm curious to play R2, but I'm no longer in a place where I can justify buying a whole system for one or a few games. So it's either PC or no for me most likely

@@RushHourWeekend it smacks of rushed development. They probably planned to do what you said but then needed to just throw in garbage quests when they ran out of time. They could have done so much with Midgar. Imagine what it'd been like if you could do proper quests for the people in the slums and also for people living on the plate to learn more about the differences in the way they lived. Instead we have to do things like kill monsters in a warehouse then kill more monsters in the same warehouse. I hope killing rats was a joke inserted by someone unhappy with the generic nature of the quests.

I mean, that's not the right application of the saying insofar this person didn't hate the original FFVII and presumably plenty of other things.
By your use of this saying, and what you just said, you're essentially just making an ad populum argument which is a fallacy and a cognitive bias. That this is a terrible argument should go without saying. Plenty of trite and banal media has high scores on metacritic.
Also no, "the original creators" did not return for this game. Four of the creators did. Of the 10 people who wrote for the event scenes of the original, only 3 did. The fourth is Yusuke Naora, on art.
FFVII was worked on by a team of over a 100 people. The man who ran the entire team, Sakaguchi, did not return for the remake. The creative lead designer of the prerendered backgrounds did not return, and a whooping 7 of the original accredited writers did not return.
The idea that you cannot grapple with or conceptualize that it's possible to like or enjoy the original FFVII as is, and not enjoy what SE did with the remake/compilation is frankly speaking bafflingly narrow-minded and silly. The fact that you somehow feel the need the need to defensively characterize people like this as being wrong in some sense or faulty as people, rather than jotting it down to a difference in values or taste, is telling as well. You might want to spend some time reflecting on why that is.

And also i loved Rebirth, especially the part where Genesis doesn't show up. I tought to myself they finally retconed that disgrace of a character. But then they decided to introduce a character named Glenn Lodbrock or something like that. I had no idea who that was, had to google the guy only to find out he is a character from the mobile gacha game. And he's really important to the story of Rebirth. He's about to start a war between Wutai and Shinra and i have no idea who he is because i don't play fucking money milking mobile games. So disappointing. Its not just Nojima or Nomuras fault, its a conscious decision by Square to entice people to spend more money in a moronic gacha game. And there my immersion was broken. Honestly sounds like tour become jaded with cinematic games. Which is ashamed because if you think back to your very first time playing ff7 on the ps1 the game was so cinematic that the 15 hours of actual gameplay was bloated to 60. And while the side games like core weren't perfect they did serve a purpose. They we re meant to give backstop to characters but they were sir characters that at the time the fan were passionate to see more of and were asking to see. Was it all good? Hell no. But it did its job.
Lastly the remakes while again not perfect, treaded so much familiar ground precisely because of what the next 2 gamss will be:different.
They are tired of telling then same story from 30 years ago because fans cant let it go.
Those "ghost" at the end were fates. Physical manifestations of destined history. By killing them they are telling you that these next game will be different.
These games aren't meant for you. While some enjoy the original still other may enjoy this revised history even more so which is OK. The original was fire, this reboot for lack of a better term so far is good.
The fact that both exist in such different ways allows everyone to enjoy 7 in was that only they can, and the fact that so many people say if should have been left alone, remade in the original format that it has already done so many times; is a bit gatekeeping.

Aerith character is almot 100% define by not being breave enough to fully embrace Zack, and this in turns inspires cloud after she died. When the psp game came out it was kind of unecessary when its tag along to ps1 ffvii that cannot express this nuance.

Sorry, I have to disagree with most of what you say.
The compilation is not an insult to fans, perhaps it's an insult to purists but definitely not the fans as a whole. Only the purists because they just want the OG and that's it and they make it to be. A 1 to 1 remake with very little addition. While your opinion is just as valid as mine, I just thought I needed to post the counter to it and I know I won't hit every point so I apologize in advance.
Advent Children does have its issues but to those who have dived into the lore and listened to the online audio book of On the Way to a Smile and read the book The Kid's are Alright, it helps the movie make more sense. Yes, the turks were murderers and should have paid for killing thousands but.... this movie itself is about Redemption. It focuses on people who suffers from regret and grief, it's like the secondary story of a war veteran who must now integrate back into society and deal with the what has happened even if he was heroic. I found the story in that aspect very relatable. My complaint was more about lack of other characters not getting the spotlight they needed except during fight scenes, not using magic or other summons which they had and still yet after everything there were some things left ambiguous. For the time it was made, overall I think it was a great movie.
First Soldier Mobile could have been really successful had they put it on PC and eventually console. Now that SE is going multi-platformer it could have been much more successful. I actually enjoyed it. I even wrote a fanfiction for the last three rando models in the First Soldier trailer which so far they have not used in the canon story.
Dirge of Cerebus was more about showing an even darker side of Shinra just to hammer how evil they really were. Vincent Valentine's story itself was actually more fascinating than Cloud's in my opinion. His involvement stretches all the way from Before Crisis to the present part of the compilation. The multiplayer DoC added some more lore to it which kind of gave it some more cohesion; so with that said, I will concede and agree with you on the part that the coherence was all over the place with some media not being available at all but only in Japan like Before Crisis as well. I think Vincent with the new antagonists, it really gave a nice extension to the series, however it was short and did leave some things to be desired. Granted the story was a bit out there but with some editing they actually could make it much better and as far as game play, it was the PS2 era and let's just say the dialogue also wasn't the best. Sure it has it's flaws with the mysterious ending, but it added a lot of new lore to the world which I do appreciate.
Crisis Core was Zack's story, to me I felt like the man who set Cloud forward on his destiny was worth getting a back story. Like DoC, it is plagued with annoying features, it's definitely not perfect as a game and the UMD it was on was expensive and there was about another 25% of the game that was actually cut out due to that expense. The story of Zack and Aerith was one I felt was worth telling, after all it was expanded lore from the OG. Aerith mentions Zack was her first love. It was amazing how popular Zack became after introducing his story and him as a character. To be honest, I actually like Zack a little more than Cloud. I liked Genesis too even if he had some cringe moments, his quirky/cringe Loveless obsession kind of gave him a lot of charm. I aslo liked how we saw Genesis evolve through the story as well and I really liked Angeal. We also got to see a different side of Sephiroth which kind of made him a much more complex character.
Remake I will say that I was a bit upset at first when they decided to take it a different direction, but after playing through it another time, I actually came to appreciate it and have since embraced it as a sequel to the compilation. It's not perfect but I definitely see the improvement from the other games they have made.
While I will say there are definitely flaws and things I will definitely agree with you with, the story aspect that I wanted out of it really made it more interesting to me. Perhaps I fall into the new group of people who appreciate it for what it is, but at the end of the day it is the DEVs story and they have the right to add or change whatever it is they like whether we agree with it or not and don't even get me started on the shipping wars which has poisoned the well even more. I'm scared to see what will happen to the community once they decide to canonize the shipments when it comes to the Zerith, Cloti, and Clerith Clans. While I do get some of the purist mentality, I've accepted that times change and they will never be able to recapture that moment 27 years ago (as of this posting) that we felt back then because we were all different people then. Some of us were just kids.
I've enjoyed the story thus far and at this point just enjoying the ride.

Very fascinating to see the perspective of someone that's engrossed in this storyline. I'll admit, I am somewhat invested in the series at this point, otherwise I wouldn't have played all these games. I can appreciate just how different each game is in terms of gameplay, but when it comes to a game bringing the complete package of great combat and great storytelling, it's disappointing to see that the series peaked with the first entry.

@@RushHourWeekend Don't get me wrong, the game play mechanics and dialogue in these spin off games definitely doesn't help them, but I will say the fandom is so divided that no matter what the devs do they will not be able to please everyone.

this is one of the better defense statement for 7+ i have read.
a lot of people seemed to forget that its not just black/white, so i really appreciate that you acknowledge both sides.
if you ever decide to make a video talking about it and expand more, i would watch it 100%.
i do agree that the shipping poisoned the well.. im not part of the writing team, but as a writer myself, i am endlessly in fear for them.
in 7r, they are basically using all 3 heroines(including jessie) as story telling devices for cloud's growth. that, and make the 3 symbolize different kinds of attraction and different kinds of love.
but that doesnt mean everyone would get it nor want that.
so im really worried if they would be able to push through what they really want to do or would the shipping wars cause them to land a safer approach. that safer approach is usually the lamest approach and would end with the lamest conclusion where no one is really satisfied.
and lets face it, even after 7r, that shipping wars would still continue no matter what cause it is what it is...
also for the purist, tons of mods has already been made by fans themselves for the og 7. the 7th heaven mod for example already gives og 7 the modern look everyone was looking for. og 7 mods in general are some of the highest quality fan built mods out there. theres really no reason for squareenix to redo og 7 1:1 cause again, fans has already done them for years now.
if squareenix decided to redo og 7 1:1, theres portion of the fandom that would still rant about it and might even say that the fan made mods are better or what not

@@songohan5866 At this point for Crisis Core Reunion I wished we got DLC for the content they had originally planned for CC but cut due to the price of UMDs on PSP. I'm sure we will get a similar remake remaster for Dirge of Cerebus hopefully they include some of the lore from the multiplayer DoC.... I also hope they decide to give us a proper remake for Before Crisis too.
The new upcoming Ever Crisis First Soldier teases a young Angeal.... which may actually be that cut content they had originally planned for CC
