Can y’all do 10 classic musicals and include music man?
This list is so not the caliber of list I’d expect from your team. Underrated? 97% of these numbers come from some of the most well-known musicals of all time and yet you over look so many amazing dances like Bob Fosse & Debbie Reynolds in “Give a Girl a Break” or Gower Champion’s “Serenade for New Baby” from “Everything I Have Is Yours” or the acrobatic marvel that is Gene Kelly building a home for children while dancing on the beams of the roof from “Living in a Big Way.” Might wanna think about how this list title is just worded very poorly. It’s more like “10 Dance Numbers from major movie musicals that you forget are great” but even that’s not just accurate either. Never been so disappointed in a list in my history of being a fan.

I feel like the plot of white Christmas was entirely missed. It’s not about a struggling production company at all. It’s about a very successful production company helping their old army general during tough times and romances for the leads.
The sisters were the struggling act, the guys were at the top of their game.

Definite miss on the premise of this musical. And a classic that never gets old. Trivia: It was Danny Kaye’s idea to ad lib in the “Sisters” scene with Bing Crosby to “lighten the mood” b/c Crosby was not happy about looking “girlie” in the scene. So the laughter from Bing is absolutely genuine!
Yes, they got confused with Holiday Inn, the precursor of White Christmas.

The modern viewer has no idea how incredibly talented danny kaye was. Along with classic comedic and acting gifts this guy wouldn't look out of place dancing with the best that ever laced up shoes. What a talent.

Donald O'Conner and Gene Kelly were such iconic and physical actors, when they danced, it seemed so effortless and joyous, like they were unjust fooling around for the fun of it!
People give Gene Kelly so much credit, but O'Conner is just as good in every scene they do together in Singin' in the Rain.

If it comes to that, the barn dance from Seven Brides is routinely mentioned as one of the greats, and certainly would make any top-20 list.
I think it is underrated. While those in the know will acknowledge it as one of the best dance sequences on film, I think when it comes to the general public, it is relatively unknown.
The Nicholas brothers were never underated: Fred Astaire said that they were the greatest tap dancers he had ever seen.
But sadly, they are not anywhere near as famous as Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire. They should be
@@charlieevilpig7776 Gene Kelly insisted on them for the finale of The Pirate. By dancing with them, he guaranteed that their number couldn't be cut from the movie for southern distribution.
They are certainly not underrated. Fred Astaire himself said that the dance sequence shown above was the best dance performance ever put on film. Anyone who is familiar with modern dance knows who they are.
Even hip hop owes the Nicholas Brothers. They were a legendary duo and epic even before their voices changed.
Also excellent singers. My favorite video from then--"soundie?"--is Glenn Miller's "Kalamazoo," which featured the brothers singing and dancing.
*Vera-Ellen* is underrated. Her movement was so razor sharp, supernaturally athletic, & graceful, she could've made Gene Kelly sweat.
I like watching her but knowing she was anorexic makes me sad
Another under-rated performer, for sure! Her dance routines in "White Christmas" made the movie a classic holiday movie "must," in my opinion, however, the number she did with Danny Kaye was - simply - "magical"!!!
I actually have a hard time watching Vera-Ellen, knowing the toll anorexia was taking on her.
She danced with Kelly multiple times. He held his own. You know who did make him sweat a bit? The Nicholas Brothers in The Pirate.

I can watch Donald O'Conner's "Make 'em Laugh" over and over. Not only was Donald one hell of a dancer in the scene he was also an athlete. Debbie Reynolds said the scene was shot over a two day period. Leaps, prat falls, diving through walls. My favorite dancer.
If you really enjoy Donald O'Conner doing "Make 'em Laugh" you should also check out his mostly solo dance sequence from the 1947 film "Something in the Wind." The name of the song and dance sequence from that film is "I Love a Mystery."

Mr. Donald O'Conner , literally to walk UP A WALL😮🙄🤪🤓 in 'Singin' In The Rain' - and do this without ANY special effects , wires , stunt person or ANY C.G.I. ... whatsoever 🤸..🤓 is beyond human comprehension... you wouldn't think any human could do what he did in that film ..🤔🤨😮😃😊☺️🤩... A supernaturally gifted individual he was ...☝️🙏💪🤳..👑... .. just my humble opinion.. He had Olympian control 🏋️ over every muscle in his body 🤸.💪..👍👍.. I challenge any person living today to defy gravity like he did in that film .🤨.. the dance with the stuffed dummy ..😲😮 where he actually seems to float in the air for maybe two seconds.😮😳😃😄.. there is no other person in films that I have seen accomplish in dance what Donald O'Conner did ... actually defy gravity as he did... kind of otherworldly ... spooky even .🌌🎇.. He actually had to recover in the hospital after shooting it as well (he was a multi-pack a day smoker in an era where they really didn't consider smoking as bad for you) and actually had to do it AGAIN because there was an accident and they lost the initial footage. So he did arguably one of the best comedic and high energy dance sequences ever put to film TWICE. Like mad respect sir.
He was Gene Kelly best partner - loved Leslie, Syd and Debbie but Gene outshined all the ladies - sorry gals

Honestly any dance number in white Christmas is underrated including that fast dance number vera Ellen did in her yellow outfit with her partner.
The Abraham number is what it is called... The music is from Abraham in Holiday Inn... just sped up. Just a little trivia!
And who can forget the reprise of "Sisters".
My favorite is the minstrel number. Vera Ellen is exquisite in that movie.

@@museumgirl9 Yea I can see that lol. I always was shocked how tiny she was. She started off on Broadway and was one of the youngest Rockettes. I saw this thing on White Christmas and forgot who was talking about her, but the lady said she was always behind the scenes practicing and rehearsing. That she was one of the most dedicated dancers of her time. It shows! A petite body is a side effect of her passion lol. So glad she was that way because it sure is my favorite! I watch the minstrel number on here multiple times per year haha. 😁
Yul Brynner was dealing with lung cancer when filming The King and I, and still pushed to do these dance numbers, especially that scene in particular, repeatedly until it was done perfectly. Each time taking a moment to breathe from an oxygen tank, then getting back up and doing it again.
That should at least garner the waltz they did in a better spot in my opinion for the sheer grace, precision, and work that man put into his performance while literally gasping for air each time they cut for that scene. Truly, he was a remarkable and amazing performer of that time. May he rest peacefully and in greatness still.
Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen are perfection. And 7 Brides for 7 brothers fun fun fun. Musicals are my absolute favorites.

Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and White Christmas are my two absolute favorite musicals of all time. They just don't make them like they used to.
Moses supposes is one of the coolest,best and incredible dance scene in all the time in the movie of Sigin in the rain 1952
It's a good one, but it lacks the force of story, which takes a great dance number to stellar heights. There are better numbers in the movie. Gotta dance!
"Singing In The Rain" is more famous, "Make 'Em Laugh" is funnier, and "Broadway Melody" tells a great story. But "Moses Supposes" is just plain downright fun to watch, and Kelly & O'Connor probably had just as much fun choreographing & dancing to it.
Personally I think Donald O'Connor is highly underrated in this dance. I don't care what anyone says, he steals the show. 😝
"Steam Heat" from The Pajama Game is never given the love it deserves either! Deserves so much looooove
One of my favorites. I don't know about it not getting the love it deserves, however, the number would make stage musical history by introducing the signature style of Bob Fosse.

My son is smiling down right now, Singing in the Rain was one of our best musicals. My son became a professional dancer because of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. But this dance number, Moses Supposes he loved so much. He passed away at 39 in 2017, this song brought back the memory of my son and I enjoying this movie tremendously.

Agree! The Red Blues is campy now with all those cute boys is super tight pants leaping around - but Cyd Charrise is sensational in it. I love it too. There are at least three great dances from Silk Stockings that nobody ever watches. Even the opening number with the three girls is brilliantly staged. And how about Les Girls? Two terrific dances there.
But was Cyd Charisse ever actually underrated? Actually, this list has so many extremely well-loved dances, I guess she should have been on it. Title has to change, though... seriously.

Most of them are either outshined with the general public by other dance routines from that movie, are dance scenes from movies not generally thought of for there dancing or just obscure films. I know Seven Brides because it was a favorite of a relative, and Dorcas is so statuesque. I think most people when they think of dances from Grease their mind goes to You Are The One That I Want, or maybe Greased Lightning or Summer Nights. Others are from movies you know that they are musicals, you don't really go to them for dance like Oklahoma! (I love that one, but I tend to forget about the dance scenes in it), or The King and I.
@@carisjacksonville Most of these musicals aren't shown through out the year on TV anymore so it's easy for them to be forgotten. I blame the TV Networks. But Make 'Em Laugh is certainly not underrated.
I'm surprised Yankee Doodle Dandy wasn't on this list anywhere. At that point in Cagney's career he was more known for his tough guy roles. When i first watched the movie, it blew my mind at how well Cagney could dance.
It surprised people of the era somewhat too, by the time he did Yankee Doodle Dandy he was more known for the tough guy slash gangster roles, but he started his career in vaudeville and Broadway as a song and dance man. And he actually did meet George M. Cohen once, though they never actually spoke.
I'm not sure it's underrated as Cagney won an Academy Award for it.
The Barn Dance from 7 Brides is widely considered to be one of the best dance numbers of its era. Not exactly like underrated.

"Step In Time": one of my all-time favorites, and on the list of scenes that I would have loved to do if I was in the movies in that era.

@@MyHairMyHobby It wasn’t shot in one take, there clearly are edits in it. I guess it’s a myth. They probably could’ve performed it live but for filming reasons the camera and lighting were reset to get the best shots.

I do think she was maybe attempting to highlight youth’s ignorance at times, though, with some having attitudes of thinking they know it all, while discounting the importance of other’s contributions from the past.
It'd be nice to actually see a number from a film that isn't as well known as there were often many movie musicals competing against each other and thus some got lost in the shuffle

The dance from White Christmas has always been one of my favorite scenes from that movie, and the dress! Fabulous!

It has to be James Cagne dancing down the stairs. It was amazing from Yankee Doodle Dandy.

I think still far to many people do not know that James Cagney was a song and dance man. There is a seen where he and Bob Hope sing and dance together in The Seven Little Foys, that is a favorite of mine.
From what I've read (I've read two Cagney books), it was ab libbed. He threw it in and they smartfully kept it. I don't know how he did it. Cagney was a great guy.
Interesting. Certainly in dance circles neither Cool nor The Barn Dance are underrated. They’re highly lauded. In fact many think Cool is the best piece of choreography and dancing out on film. And one correction- Take Off With Us is not an audition sequence. It’s a rehearsal. On Broadway is the audition sequence in All That Jazz.
When I watch West Side Story, I am always excited as that dance comes near. I get goose bumps everytime.
I also thought it took place after the rumble in the movie. She says it happens as they are "headed for the ultimate confrontation."
If they're going to pick an underrated WSS scene, I would have gone with the Mambo.

A BIG Thank you for choosing the barn raising dance sequence from one of my all time fave movies--"Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Tommy Rall and Russ Tamblyn and co. shine in this brilliant choreography by the great Michael Kidd.

Except that it's on the wrong list. Only Mojo would call it underrated; nearly everyone else who's seen it say that it's one of the greatest. Ditto for "Jumpin' Jive" from "Stormy Weather".

Okay Barn Dance is one of THE BEST dances. It’s also INSANELY HARD. When my theatre company did 7 Brides, it took us THREE REHEARSALS to choreograph the number. THREE. But man it was so worth it. It was the BEST feeling!!!!

Vera Ellen was never underrated. She was always held in high regard, but she was never able to make the leap from terrific dancer to an appealing performer. She just didn't 'register' as an actress. And she was really difficult to work with by all accounts. Great dancer, nobody home.
So was Eleanor Powell. Neither great dancer got enough screen time, in my opinion.

When I was in high school I took a study of stage musicals class. And every time I hear “Who’s got the pain when they do the mambo”, because of someone in that class mishearing the lyrics, I now can’t not hear “who’s got the penguin they do the mambo”

The song was written as a bit of nonsense to fill a gap in the show, and to give Gwen Verdon another number. It makes no sense in the film, and in the show it makes no sense either. Suddenly there's a number featuring Gwen Verdon's character that has nothing to do with the plot. Fosse did the same thing with Steam Heat, but that showstopper made a bit more sense. They did that a lot back then, throw in a great number and let's see if the audience loves it. Unfortunately when they did love it, they were stuck with a number that they got away with on the stage and everyone loved, but on film feels much more obviously 'thrown in'. Fosse was famous for that. That's why a lot of wonderful songs from great musicals got dropped from the film versions. Take The King and I. I Have Dreamed is a beautiful song, but when you watch the show now, you wonder why it's needed because We Kiss in a Shadow says the same thing really, and do we need to see the lovers again in the garden? No. I Have Dreamed was written so they could make an elaborate scene change. And that's the truth!

AND Yul Brenner did the piece with one lung, having had the other surgically removed from cancer during the filming.
Back in the 1980’s while I was living in Boston I saw Yul Bruner on stage in The King and I. He was wonderful!
Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor dance, and they seem to be supported by wires just a bit off the floor when they move. Check out the "Fit as a Fiddle" number in that movie, where they orbit each other like close binary stars.

This list was a mixed bag for me. The barn dance in Seven Bides is the most famous number from that movie so I don't see how it's "underrated" but most folks (including myself) forget about the fancy club routine in Sweet Charity so that one counts. But how any number from White Christmas is underrated is a hard sell for me, although I think they chose the wrong number...it's obviously Sisters lol
But then again I'm a big musical theatre person and half the time I'm shouting at these lists going, "That's not underrated!" and my poor SO is going, "Not by you, but most folks can't sing that whole show, babe." So I might have a skewed scale.

I was kind of wondering myself what the criteria is for underrated. On one hand they aren't getting a lot of attention because they are old movies not because the dancing is underrated. However they get plenty of attention and recognition from those into classic movies because of the dancing!
So not sure how this is determined.
Hmm...well from Sing In the Rain, they do not even mention Gene Kelly's dancing to the title song or Good Morning, so they either had to consider them so bad as not to be considered or so highly rated not to be considered. Which do you think?

No mention was made of Ann Miller's "Shakin' the Blues Away" in Easter Parade. She was a fabulous dancer but no one mentions how energetically she performed this number. I'm mesmerized every time I watch it.

"White Nights" Mishka and Gregory are right on. A tap dancer and a major ballet dancer. Awesome I've watched their dance scene so many times I've lost count. If you haven't seen it your truley missing an unforgettable dance.

I think the Nicholas Brothers are terribly under-rated as dancers. They are spectacular and I believe the color of their skin affected their rating as dancers and entertainers. Perhaps they'd be more accepted today than when they were dancing? I would hope so, but I'm not so sure.
I think Gene Kelly once favorably one of the Nicholas Brothers to Fred Astaire in artistry and I know that the other brother was compared to Gene Kelly when it came to athleticism.
@@janhankins911 Gregory Hines said that if they wanted to duplicate that dance from "Stormy Weather" in a contemporary film, they'd have to use CGI, since no one living could do what they did.
From “Singing in the Rain”, I always thought “Fit as a Fiddle” was fantastic and “Good Morning” is fun to watch - how can you not be amazed at the phenomenal talents in all the movies mentioned.
Debbie Reynolds was *so* out of her league dancing in "Good Morning". And Gene Kelly knew it, and was quite blunt about it to Debbie. But it came out all right in the final cut.
@@elwoodblues9613 Reynolds was very young and not the experience Kelly preferred. But I’ve read that he was very nasty to her throughout production. I believe he had a reputation of being difficult. But the results in the movie would be convincing otherwise; seemed to appear to have had all the chemistry to make the audience believe they were truly in love. I love the movie and am fascinated every time I see it with choreography.
OMG "Fit as a Fiddle" is one of my favorite dance numbers in movies and is sorely underrated. Good Morning is so damn good too and never got the true recognition it deserves.
As a kid, if I wasn’t watching Science Fiction monster flicks, I was watching these classic musicals. They’re still captivating to this day.✨👯♂️✨

I still say there are some awesome over looked dances like " To Life " and the utterly amazing bottle dance during the wedding scene from Fiddler on the Roof

The “Cool” scene in West Side Story is AFTER the big fight. He’s trying to calm them down so they can find Tony without making a scene or committing more murder.
My mom loved musicals, and I had so much fun watching them with her. She passed away in August and I miss watching these musicals with her. But I do cherish the time spent watching them with her.
This list is not of underrated dance scenes. they are actually among the GREATEST.

@@dianesilverman3842, I remember the sweet surprise I felt when I saw that modern dance number. I love how Rodgers and Hammerstein incorporated modern dance into dream sequences in their movies. Unfortunately, this piece, which was wonderfully performed, was (and still is) overlooked.
The entire film is underrated. It's great and no one hardly ever mentions it.
Nicolas Brothers are my number 1 for sure, that transition between splits to standing at the end, they make it look effortless 👏👏👏

I know, How to Succeed is incredibly underrated! Also, I'm kinda shocked they didn't include Steam Heat from The Pajama Game, even as an Honorable Mention. That's classic Fosse, and they honored him so many other times on this list. Maybe they thought it was overkill?

As far as underrated goes... Donald O'Connor's drunk dance in "Call Me Madame" takes the honors...

Hell, I'd argue as far as numbers in Singing in the Rain go, the Fit as a Fiddle number with him and Gene Kelly is underrated because it's not a number you automatically think of with that one, given that the film has how many memorable dance sequences?
It's so simple but I loved the choreography for Elegance From Hello Dolly!
You forget June Bride from "Seven Brides for Seven Daughters"! Some of those women are classically trained and ballet dancers. It's my favorite underrated piece. Second to that is "Who will buy?" from Oliver

...Also, at least one of the men.... Jacques d'Amboise's (Ephram) credit includes the acknowledgment "Courtesy New York City Ballet", but he still had to leave before filming was finished because he was under contract with them.
Are you honestly saying that the barn dance from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, one of the most iconic dances in all movie musicals, is underrated?
I think it comes down to that movie being more obscure. As wonderful of a movie as it is. It does not have the pop culture attention of a movie like West Side Story, so the best dance sequence in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers gets a spot. Where as from West Side Story, like the America dance, Mambo at the HS dance, or I Feel Pretty are all up there in the minds of the public.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is one of the best movies ever made.
It was made on the cheap to be seen as part of a double bill. It got lucky that's all, because watching it today it's very ordinary.
Steam Heat from The Pajama Game is another classic Fosse number-with hats! Soooo difficult and totally cool.
Danny Kaye is my all time favorite ❤ I play "The Best Things..." year round. At our wedding we are going to project classic Hollywood musical numbers including Astaire, Kelly, O'Connor, and of course Kaye!
Tom, Dick & Harry from Kiss Me Kate is ACTUALLY underrated and largely forgotten - should have made the cut here!

I love that movie. I don't think it's as well known as other musicals. Especially internationally.
I don’t understand some of these choices. For instance, what dance scenes were more highly rated in their respective films than “Shall We Dance?” in “The King and I,” “Jumpin’ Jive” in “Stormy Weather,” or “Barn Dance” in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers?”

Yeah, good grief - "Shall We Dance" and the "Barn Dance" are *the* main attractions of their respective movies.
Yeah, their definition of underrated needs a little work. Most of their choices are considered classic dance routines and most movie fans and dance fans know of them. They are highly regarded as seminal dance routines, especially the Fosse routines.
How many non-musical fans know of Seven Brides at all? How many people think of the dancing from The King and I? (I certainly don't. As much as I love Oscar and Hammerstein musicals, I generally do not think of the dancing with a few notable exceptions.) Now some of there pics make more sense like Moses Supposes, when you compare it to Gene's routine to the Singing In the Rain, because it has a direct comparison in the show.

"Take Off With Us" from All That Jazz was not the audition scene. That was covered in the beginning of the film with "On Broeadway". "Take Off With Us" was a preview for the producers of the fictional Broadway show. All those dancers had already gotten the parts.

I agree it's one of the most famous from the film, I believe it's considered underrated because many don't know the film at all, so they choose the biggest, best number from a little-known source. I could be wrong, but it's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Some of these "underrated" dance scenes just happened to be some of the most famous dance scenes in movie musical history. Just sayin.'

Great choices. May I mention two of my favorites: the classic "Dancing in the Dark" from The Bandwagon and "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This", the memorable rooftop dance with Paula Kelly, Shirley Mc Claine and Chita Rivera.
I’d say the firework dance or Fred Astaire’s drunk dance in Holiday Inn should have gotten a spot. Holiday Inn has white Christmas and Easter parade, but those two took some serious skill to pull off.

I was in the chorus for some of these musicals when my local amateur dramatics society did them. Oklahoma was a lot of fun but I quickly discovered how exhausting things like that can be for the people involved.

The duo in “Stormy Weather” are in a whole other league. Incredible. As for calling several of these dance scenes “underrated,” whoever wrote that isn’t aware that they’ve always been highly rated.

I'm going to disagree here. I'm a fan of musical theater, but I do not care for a lot of Fosse's work. I acknowledge his talent, but it just doesn't do a lot for me. So I've never seen much of Sweet Charity the movie, so I had never seen The Aloof before. I could see similar things with Kansas City and Shall We Dance, I love Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, but when I thing of dance scenes from their movies I tend to go to The Sound of Music first, Carousel second, and some others.
I’m so happy “The best things happen while you dance” was not only on this list, but so high on the list! This number is my favourite one out of White Christmas. I also love Rosemary Clooney’s line after the dance finishes.

The dance “Cool” was done after the rumble in the movie to calm the gang down. In the stage play it was before the rumble as you described. The clip was from the movie.
Oh I didn’t realize on stage that it comes before the rumble. That’s very interesting, and kind of changes the meaning of the song in some ways.
The Nicholas Brothers are absolutely astounding and well as Ray Bolger. I have to wonder about the health of their legs and the longevity of simple walking well in their later years!
I would be hard pressed, indeed, to pick my "favorite" of these under-rated dances. Another I'd have added is "Me Ol' Bamboo" from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". These are, indeed, wonderful dance sequences.
Me Old Bamboo is one of the worst musical numbers in history, sorry.

The song cool in west side story happened after the fight between the two gangs. The jets members were pissed about riff dying and wanted revenge which leads the new leader, ice, to calm them down, because he knows if they blindly charged after the sharks, more lives would be lost.
The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing is fantastic, and made even better with costuming by the legendary Edith Head. Vera Ellen's dress, with the darker underskirts, is so dreamy!

Who decided that any of these dance numbers are underrated? All these numbers are integral to the plot of the respective stories.

I’ve always thought that if I could go back in time and be on the set of a movie, I would want to be on the set of the “King and I” while they were filming the “shall we dance “segment. The music and its orchestration and Yul Brenner and Deborah Kerr dancing the full breadth of the stage. - Wow!
I am so glad you included the Barn Raising Dance from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. That one is dazzling. However, my all time favorite dancers are not seen in classic musicals. They are the ice dancers Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean. The pair changed ice skating forever. They are the first and only pair skaters to win a perfect score in Olympic Gold. Torvill and Dean are remarkable for their precise synchronization, innovative choreography, and seamless transitions. Unlike many skaters, they focus on dance rather than daredevil lifts and jumps. If you've never seen them, look for them in "Torvill and Dean Sarabande"
Singing In The Rain has an amazing dance routine by Donald O’Connor in the Make Them Laugh number it’s freakin incredible! Another never mentioned dance number that is underestimated is Jerry Lewis in Cinderfella it’s really outstanding! I heard after the staircase part he actually was rushed to the hospital with a heart attack. The man could do it all! Jerry Lewis was a super talent!
YES!!! I actually just LITERALLY got the dvd of Cinderfella in the mail yesterday (November 23rd). Jerry's dance sequence down the staircase was filmed in one shot. He put SO much energy into it, he suffered a heart attack at, I believe, age 28.
I love each and everyone of these movies. I've always loved musicals since I was a little girl.
