Musicals are a fantasy. I really dislike when people is like “why do everybody knows the choreography?” “Who wants to sing in that situation?” Well, that’s the fantasy. I mean, that’s the genre...it dosent have to be realistic, I think that’s the magic of it.
Why would you sing in that situation? Clearly they've never met me. Every emotion is best expressed through song.
I don’t think it always has to be a fantasy. I think the songs are a way to dive into ones mind or better clarity of a situation. Dream girls, rent and phantom of the opera all have very depressing songs. They can leave you heavy hearted and you can see their point of view.
Lemonade lemon Yeah, I totally get that. But I’m not referring to the topic of the musicals being fantasy, I mean the performance. In my head they’re two planes: the reality plane and the fantasy plane; and the performance ocurres on the fantasy. It will be really dumb to see rehearsals and all that implies to make a number if the topic of the movie isn’t that...that’s why everyone knows the choreography, because the performance is a fantasy, the fantasy of expressing certain felling through a song.

I think those people don't understand the way it is written. While I love musical, I'm always disturbed by the narrative structure of it, I remember watching a lot of them with my sister and constantly asking her "do they dream now? Does it actually happen?" and I had no idea of what's going on ; plus, sometimes they do sing within the story, sometimes it's just the reflection of their émotions. I think this is a difficult genre to apprehend and it need some help to get it :)

I've never really understood why people complain about singing in musicals. It's commonly accepted as being a component of the genre, like explosions or car chases in an action flick, or cheesiness in a romantic comedy! 🚗🎤♥️

Exactly. Why nobody makes mistakes when speaking in movies, everybody speaks at the same volume, you can see in the darkness, there's music coming from nowhere, days pass in seconds? They don't, that's just tools for storytelling, like songs are in musicals.
I always wondered if it was showcasing talent they don’t have, which makes it harder to appreciate sometimes because then you can’t see yourself (saying this as I am NOT a singer to save my life). It’s a shame they can’t appreciate it for being a great performance.

Maybe for starters, you can watch Cabaret, it's set in the 30s in Germany, it's like a juxtaposition between the cabaret life and the rising of the 3rd Reich. I think you will like it because they don't casually burst into songs, it all happens in the stage of the club, so it makes more sense, hope it helps! That movie is such a classic and one of my favourite musicals

@A Broke Kpop Stan Who Stans Like 20 Groups watching a musical on film and at a theatre feels completely different. At a theatre it feels a lot more natural, as you already feel transported into a new world when you enter, see the set and feel the energy and excitement. Watching musicals on film at home can give the cheesy or cringe effect for some as they feel too rooted in reality in their own humble abode. Perhaps try seeing something on broadway? Or even go to a community theatre? I'm sure you'll enjoy it ;)

That scene It's from the movie "Dancer In The Dark"(2000), directed by Lars Von Trier and set in the early to mid 60s. Björk's character, Selma, is a poor, immigrant, single mother who is quickly turning blind, because she has a degenerative illness, and the only joy in her life are musical films, apparently all, but specially the ones from the 1930's and the ones directed by Busby Berkeley. She daydreams often about her life turning into musical numbers sometimes, when things turn sour. Since she is already going blind, i guess she didn't watch things like West Side Story and since the movie is set in 1963 or 1964 Les misérables, Heathers or Little Shop Of Horrors don't exist, yet. But yeah you're right. 😉

I love both but I really miss musicals in movies. Even Disney is barely doing musicals now.
True I know people tried to say la la land brought original Hollywood musicals but it didn’t really captured what makes a great musical film is made of (memorable musical numbers, amazing singing and dancing) the only great part of the film is the ending
Would you consider Rocketman a musical movie? Does it have to be an original or is adaptation accepted by this definition? If so, I think the closest one coming out will be In the Heights. Or, I guess technically Cats was a true musical movie...

@@tariqthomas9090 I agree that biopics should not count. If the biopic was about a baseball player instead of a person who plays music, the music wouldn't be a significant aspect of the film. If it was a *musical* about a baseball player, music would be significant to the story.

I cannot express how much i bloody love musicals and how much i love this video. I was raised on movie musicals. i remember watching them with my mum when i was little. Our go to faves were The Sound Of Music, Mary Poppins, Wizard Of Oz, Oliver and Calamity Jane. this set me up for life and i have just loved them more and more the older i have got. La La land is good, The Greatest Showman is amazing. not actually seen A Star Is Born yet but i'll get round to it. Ugh i just love them so much.

The new show Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist does this concept in an interesting way. Only one character can see the musical numbers which allows the other characters to express their emotions. I love how it's tows the line between escapism and realism.

I really dislike the line "why do they suddenly sing and dance". I don't see many people asking why it is the people whose perspective we are given who fall in love in romance movies and not other random people or things like this. It is a given - and it is just the rest that has to make sense (and, like, the music has to be good)

Crazy ex-girlfriend is some of the best of these. Combining both parody and true love for music and musicals. It's funny and ironic, but there are real reasons for why each style is chosen for the moments in the story that the creators were trying to convey. Masterfully done!
Actually, musicals have an even older history: European operetta came much earlier. Musicals work on the same principle, except for the difference in musical style. Thank you for the video :-)

I'm a huge theatre geek and this video is everything I could ever wish for. The only problem I had is that I just couldn't help but sing at every single clip.
The musical is a fascinating genre in that it is easier to make it work on stage and in animation than on film. When producing a musical, you need a huge suspension of disbelief and it's easier to do that on a stage or in a movie where the characters are drawings rather than in a live action film. Nevertheless, we need musicals in our lives, whether we're seeing one in an auditorium, on a screen after an on-stage show got taped, or as a movie musical.
Interesting point of view! For examples, look at West Side Story and The Sound of Music, both directed by Robert Wise. The stage versions of both shows begin their opening numbers fairly quickly - the environment onstage has been established. But in both films, Wise takes his time getting to the "number", establishing the reality and setting that we are going to be in. This is because Wise felt the audience couldn't just be dropped into the story. He had to guide them into it.
I had never heard that Rachel Bloom quote before, but that is totally how I explain my songwriting process to people, a musical essay. The only difference is you have the benefit of the actual music to use Pathos to establish a strong tone to it. I usually use the bridge as a revelation/refutation as well to help the lyrics be more interesting through multiple listens.
As much as I love this video essay (as I love ALL of The Take's video essays), I did feel like this one was more of a history of the musical rather than a deep look into why the musical is important. Musicals as a form are often misunderstood as being vapid and inauthentic regardless of the heavy themes or political events they grapple with - because singing one's thoughts and feelings is illogical and therefore inauthentic. However, what makes the musical so spectacular to me is how it marries logic (spoken word) with emotion (music) - allowing audiences to simultaneously engage with their intellect AND their feelings (two aspects of humanity that are far too frequently juxtaposed in film and media). Music can also add cultural value to a story in a way that words cannot (e.g. Caroline, or Change used blues music and African tribal music to demonstrate Caroline's deep emotional ties to her roots). Above all, I feel that the musical form is most valuable in the way that it creates a more engaging story by constantly oscillating between two different mediums - the spoken word and song. The audience doesn't know what to expect, which means they can't get too comfortable (which is why Cabaret is so effective - it makes use of music in surprising and confrontational ways). Again, I love The Take SO MUCH, but I also love musicals and I feel they deserve deeper recognition.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people who say they hate musicals have only actually seen one or two. Sometimes they haven’t even seen any. Which is really annoying. Because to me if that would be like if someone saw one or two comedies and decided they hated all of them. All musicals are different so just because you don’t like one of them doesn’t mean you won’t like another.

I love how "Crazy Ex Girlfriend" handles its musical numbers. The songs are inspired by popular musical artists. As the series progresses, the songs begin to reflect how Rebecca sees her life, her undiagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder, and how she resolves to make a better life for herself. 🎵🎼🎤
Trina Q I also like how Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s numbers became progressively less about Rebecca and began to focus on the other characters, especially with the revelation that she couldn’t actually sing in real life. It really showed just how much Rebecca’s recovery lead to her being a lot less self-involved and more grounded and empathetic to other people’s struggles.

I can see people being impatient with musicals because the large dance numbers do go on for a while and the image of traditional, wholesome musicals.
I have a theory that enjoyment of musicals depends on exposure at a young age. I grew up during the Disney Renaissance and saw the Sound of Music and the Wizard of Oz on rotation as a child. As a teen, I thought I only liked subversive or dark musicals such as the Book of Mormon and Spring Awakening. I didn't realize at the time that some classic musicals are incredibly dark such as Cabaret or Gypsy.
As an adult, I accepted my love for musicals and am married to a man who did not grow up with musicals or Disney movies. Since his image of musicals is from the wholesome and "cheesy", I've slowly exposed him to some of the "darker" musicals (Chicago, Sweeny Todd, Little Shop of Horrors, Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and he's really interested in seeing Cabaret.
There might be some truth to that theory but it's not a 100% guarantee. I grew up during that era too and I never liked the musical parts in Disney movies, I just accepted and tolerated them. I've seen a play of Sweeney Todd too and I hated that, so it's not just the cheesy musicals that I dislike
@@narutofan08nd12 I'm curious why exactly did you dislike the musical parts. Sometimes I do feel like they drag on longer than I'd like, especially when there are dance numbers involved.
I love a good dance number. 42nd Street is fun for that very reason, as is Joseph. My heart belongs to Little Shop of Horrors. Fell in love with that puppet the first time I saw that movie and then the show! So impressed even today!
I think its the "escapist" part of musicals that pushes people away.
I don't like cheesiness. I don't even like action films that are mindless power fantasies. For me those things serve no purpose.
I prefer watching the kind of entertainment that challenges my mind with new and bold perspectives or if it presents a problem-solving opportunity.
I could watch the struggles of a Christian missionary in a tropical jungle. I could also watch the daily life of a Police officer in a crime-ridden city.
But I'm not going to watch the antics of a love-triangle or an unstoppable, flawless fast-and-furious protagonist.
Sound of music is terrible. It made me have a distaste for musicals. I like some of the Disney movies though, such as hunchback of Notre Dame

I think of some moments in my life could be a musical. Like, for every moment I felt something I couldn't express there was a song coming to mind that sums it up well.
So much can be expressed through music and dance. Musicals can be anything and it's great!!
People burst into song in musicals because that’s just how things are in their fictional world. That’s it. If you simply don’t like musicals, you don’t need to justify it with typical complaints such as “why do they randomly sing and dance?”

Hamilton was a phenomenon that literally everyone just kinda knows, even if they haven’t seen/listened to it yet. It’s easier to talk about it than talking about a stage musical (even if it’s well known within the community).

In fact, Bitter Suite was the reason the Buffy musical ep didn't happen earlier, the writers didn't want people to think they were copying Xena.

"Happy Days" did a musical episode in the '70's. And Robert Morse starred in a musical series called "That's Life" that ran on ABC for one season ('68/'69). I'd love to see it.

You know, Xena had a musical episode a year or 2 before Buffy, called "The Bitter Suite." In fact , Joss Whedon has said it inspired him to do the one on Buffy. And it was an excellent ep of original music wrapping up a very emotionally intense storyline, much like Buffy's.

Thank you for making this video. This whole time I never knew the song from the saddest episode of Futurama came from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg musical. Now I need to find and watch the entirety of the film. Thank you again. Musicals have always been my favorite genre of film. To me they are everything. They show all of the incredible talents of the actors. That's why I love older films much more than the newer ones. Even though I love films because of the immense creativity and imagination behind each film. There has always been a larger and more significant place in my heart for musicals.
This was really well done. I was hoping for inclusion of more international musicals like Devdas or Sarafina. Bollywood musicals helped me get through college.
I have never been a big musical person, there are some that I do really like (La la land, West side story), but in general, I have always preferred traditional films to movie musicals. But I LOVE this analysis. Even if I never love musicals, this really helped me appreciate them as a medium for storytelling, and a representation of fantasy and dreams

Musicals come from the theatrical tradition which had a *bring in the dancing girls * aesthetic, where the more elements you put in, the more people will come to watch. Dancing, singing, AND drama!!!! That focus on the elements, not on naturalism though, allows the inclusion of more metaphors and stylistic allusions, and is still popular with studios because of the merchandise potential, the relatively low budget costs - a chorus line is still cheaper than sfx - although the heyday was still probably the 50s, before rock and roll took off.

Now that you mention it, there are quite some paralels..in both shows there is a mystical power, forcing them to express emotions they usually don't and in both shows its a turning point from a real low point (i count bitter suite as xenas musical becauae it was the first and best implemented, the others were more fun episodes)

The weird thing about the contras between Kansas and Oz is that Paul McCartney described post-war WW2 Liverpool being like the image of Kansas, kind of like in the Wizard of Oz. Drab, grey, and colorless.
I can attest: spontaneously bursting into song in real life *does* get people looking at you strangely. My kids and most of my friends are used to it, now, but casual acquaintances and strangers get that _particular look_ people usually get when trying to recall the number of the Mental Health Rapid Response Unit.
I generally can't take most musicals seriously - I enjoy them very much, but they do stretch the Willing Suspension of Disbelief to a large degree - chiefly because they're singing songs written specifically for the movie that are laser-focussed on the thoughts of that particular character. If they suddenly burst into *well-known songs* that reflect their feelings or are relevant to the situation (as I'm prone to do), it wouldn't seem so unrealistic. If some bloke got dumped in a musical and started singing _Tainted Love_ or some other popular song about being ditched (of which there are legion), the audience would just go "Oh, his plight has made him think of that song we all know..." but if he starts singing about the specific girl and exactly what she did, it seems unrealistic. Possibly quite enjoyable and emotionally charging, but still unrealistic. OK, I get that having them sing covers of well-known songs can sometimes be a copyright/royalty nightmare - but surely no worse than any movie that incorporates well-known or popular, songs as part of the sound track.
In short, I guess I'm going to have to watch _Moulin Rouge_ because it sounds like I'll enjoy it.
I think to understand a musical film you should also understand musical theater. Many of the most successful movie musicals started on the stage: Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, The Sound of Music. Before Rodgers & Hammerstein, musicals were only considered frivolous entertainment. It was only after Kern & Hammerstein’s Show Boat premiered on Broadway, that musicals started to touch on more serious themes. And it was only with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! that song and dance started to be seen as a way to move the story. Musical theater and film were growing together - let’s not forget that many of the writing talents on Broadway and the West Wend worked on musical film.

Les Mis is the friking best
Because the 2012 movie adaptation of that show was a horrible adaptation made by a hack director that has no understanding of music in general or musical storytelling. He was too focused on being as realistic as possible that it completely destroys the fantasy of the stage show and genre, which makes the entire thing awkward and, in my opinion, poorly done.
Want to know why Cats (2019), from the same people, was terrible? Because it was all the terrible decisions and techniques of the 2012 Les Mis adaptation cracked to 11.

You always come up with such special and thought provoking videos! I appreciate each and every one! This one on musicals was great for me. Musicals were what I grew up with. My mom encouraged me to watch the old black and white Astaire , Rogers films; and it blossomed from there. I love how musical genre films have not only grown with us in our society; they have become a part of our being.

Actually The Wizard of Oz movie totally changed the ending of the story. The books don’t have it be some “crazy girl fantasy”. They allow her to have much more agency and it isn’t revealed to be a dream in the end. That’s always bothered me. When the movie came out, there was a lot of fear of women having too much independence. So they had to change it so she was just a sweet little fluffy girl who had a fake adventure in her head.
Coraline is not a musical, but this movie is perfect to show the contrast between the reality and this "perfect" world that we imagine
everything is easier, more cororful and there's even a music scene, and a lot of scenes that are a little theatrical
i like to think about musicals like this, they creates a reallity were the feelings can be fully expressed bin big numbers without being weird
the point of comparation between a movie musical and a non musical movie, is like the way Coraline or even Dorothy sees the other reeallity(musicals). It's colorful and fantastic in comparassion with their normal reallity(non musical)
even with the amazing acting that can show feelings just with expressions, without the need of words, somethings about musicals amazes me and is how genuine feelings can be expressed mixing powerful singing and acting
anyways, we need more musical movies!!!
