  • Located in the peaceful coastal community of Caesarea, in central Israel, this single-family home was designed to accommodate a family of six. The project is based on an existing structure built in the 1980s, during a time when it was common to replicate monumental architectural elements like the Roman aqueduct in the emerging beachfront villas. The primary goal was to transform the house while maintaining a connection to its historical roots, all while introducing a modern and functional touch.
At the outset of the design process, a decision was made to preserve the original sandstone arches, which were strategically incorporated as a central feature of the home. However, these arches were kept hidden from the exterior, creating a surprise element for those entering the space. This design choice led to the creation of a generous entry courtyard, which plays a key role in blending the garden with the interior spaces. The courtyard allows for a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors, while maintaining the family’s privacy.
Another highlight of the design is the semicircular roof over the staircase, which subtly connects to the arched wall inside the house. This curved form acts as a visual bridge between the original architecture and the home’s new phase. The scale of the existing structure was reduced, and the resulting space was utilised to create a more organic and continuous flow between the interior and exterior areas, emphasising the home’s relationship with its natural surroundings.
Part of the old structure was demolished, and a new wing was built in its place, with the addition of concrete and steel canopies on the south-facing façade, bringing a modern edge to the design. Finally, the rooftop terrace, accessible from the courtyard, offers stunning views of the sunset and the ancient Roman aqueduct, reinforcing the visual and symbolic connection to the region’s historical landscape. The project successfully balances historical preservation with contemporary living, providing comfort and beauty in perfect harmony.
