  • The BMW M2 is one of the most exciting cars of 2016 and the most hotly anticipated M car in years. But has the wait been worth it and does it live up to its 1M Coupe predecessor? Ben Griffin investigates.

    The bmw M1 coupe has a "straight six" where the M2 has a 3 liter turbo "Inline six!" Is it just me, or does this guy sound as if he doesn't know inline and straight 6 is the same thing.

    What a great car. Would buy one over an S3 / RS3 anyday..!!!

      +Joshua L rs3 is awful so that's no suprise

    • @den_525
      @den_525 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joshua L Completely different cars! M2 is great in it's own way, and so is RS3. I'd think you would find for your daily grind, the RS3 would be much better car to be in, while the M2 is a much better car for the ultimate driving experience (cheesy)

    • @Fearzzy
      @Fearzzy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      den525 the reason why RS3 is awful IS the driving experience, everything else is very nice. i'm sure it's a great car for people who want a car that drives completely normal (as in no real fun on roads, just chill) car, and still wants alot of power just cus they can,

    • @jlue1993
      @jlue1993 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Fearzzy balance of a car with front engine, rear drive and 50:50 weight distribution, doesn't mean it has to be a grind as a daily driver.

    • @Fearzzy
      @Fearzzy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua L it's a good daily, but it's not a fun one. like every reviewer who tried the car got disappointed with the car and it's 4 wheel drive.

    That's real carbon fiber. Instead of the typical glossy CF, this is open pore CF. They put REAL carbon fiber and people complain about it being cheap plastic. Cracks me up.

      I said it has a better engine note, as in, it sound better. The Jag's 3.0-litre supercharged engine really impressed me, my Britishness is irrelevant.

  • @coureurdebois
    @coureurdebois 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    this should have been the real "M3" the new one is just so big, heavy, and its own little brother the M2 is faster / just as fast in most driving applications. hope they take their learnings in the M2 and put them into the next gen M4/M3

    • @Kaisuke971
      @Kaisuke971 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +justin bouche Next gen will have the carbon core chassis, so you can probably expect at least 70kg less even if it has the water injection, so current GTS weight for the sedan. Which is pretty good.

    I agree with almost everything reviewer said (apart from the jaguar comment), there's alot to love about the car, but there are undoubtedly a few flaws as well. Interior is definitely what lets the car down.

    textured plastic? isnt that carbon fiber?

    • @gummiesrule88
      @gummiesrule88 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Leung Yes, it's real carbon fiber. Called "dry CF". M3 and M4 have "wet CF", which is a glossier look... But dry CF is not inexpensive to make...

    • @tormoz.96
      @tormoz.96 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      gummiesrule88 the glossy look comes from a clear coat which is missing on the dry cf. still a shame how everyone keeps saying its cheap plastic / leather

    Like the review but dont agree about the interior comment. When he said thst the interior should be better quality for £40k, 40k for an m car is very very cheap and if they made the interior better quality the price would be 20k more and so if you want thst then buy an m5

  • @AGC828
    @AGC828 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Terrific review. Love your honesty. Most other reviews sound like paid advertisement for BMW. :)
    Having amazing driving feel through the steering wheel lIS important. To me. In any car. Which is why I've never truly liked driving/owning JP cars. There's usually a disconnected feel to the road. They're reliable. Can handle reasonably well. But they usually lack the "hand to steering wheel to road connection". That the M2 you say has and most 911's. And the M2's engine was tuned for the street (everywhere else that has no Autobahn or easy access to a race track w/ "track days" for average drivers).
    Would I buy a M2? Maybe. One thing that bugs me is the "roundness" of the taillights when I first saw the M2 in photos and TH-cam videos. Maybe it was the camera angles. In this video the taillights look less "round" ("cute", feminine). It's growing on me. :)

    • @LicenseToQuill
      @LicenseToQuill 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appreciate the feedback, I always try to be as honest as possible and avoid the hype surrounding the cars I drive as best I can. It's a tough balance to strike because being too positive makes people think you are on the manufacturer's payroll and being too critical makes you look biased. If I say I like a car, it's because I did. Nothing to do with any loyalty to a manufacturer. Although I have always had a soft spot for TVR...

      @AGC828 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      License To Quill I get where you're coming from as a journalist. Hope you can keep this way. Keep the reviews coming! :)
      Maybe do the 2016-2917 911 Carrera S, 718 Cayman S (or wait for the 718 Cayman GTS or Spyder), Ferrari 488? Or the upcoming 911 GT3 refresh (2017 model)...
      Subscribed.

    Absolutely stunning car to look at, and the drive/handling is quite clearly excellent, but the BMW engineers blew it with the interior and the synthesised exhaust sound. The RS3 is nowhere near as attractive, and the drive isn't quite as good, but the performance, interior, and sensational exhaust note puts the M2 in the shade.

    • @haru_haru_har_har8213
      @haru_haru_har_har8213 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Elliot James I actually find the M2 to a lot more fun to drive than the M4. Drove my cousins one and I was so baffled. It's staggering to find that it's more fun than the M135i at home. Getting my M2 next month. Ofcourse like what Fearzzy said. You'd get the M4 for just extra space, comfort and tbh, the M4 has more presence. But IMO, it's the feel that matters most

  • @elliotjames158
    @elliotjames158 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    would you have this in a manual or double clutch?

    • @Fearzzy
      @Fearzzy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Elliot James manual more fun and involving, double cluth is slightly faster and it looks cooler, but i'd go for the manual

    • @LicenseToQuill
      @LicenseToQuill 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Manual, definitely. The auto makes the M2 faster, as Fearzzy points out, but the manual suits the car better.

      +Elliot James it doesn't have what made M cars great, it's not a great drivers car. It's more of a luxury car with a powerful engine at this point

  • @stonewalled9696
    @stonewalled9696 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Turbos are great for making power and everyone knows that. Also a fact, turbos suck, break, leak or get unbalanced. In the future we'll hear about cars like this with turbo issues and the crazy cost to fix them. You can read consumer reports about the issues with 4 cylinder cars having this issues now. Look it up! Buyer beware!!!

    • @LicenseToQuill
      @LicenseToQuill 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard concerns over this already, the sheer level of power going through relatively small engines is likely to catch up on owners. Unfortunately car reviewers are unable to borrow cars for long enough to see such issues arise, and even if we did, the model may have been replaced or updated and so the point is less relevant. If a lengthy servicing plan is available and not too expensive, it's probably worth taking it.
