  • Join us on the Shannon Erne Waterway as we take a canal boat trip from Leitrim village up through the locks to Kilclare.
This canal links the River Shannon with Lough Erne, it has sixteen locks and this waterway consists of still water canal, lakes and river sections all within sixty three kilometres.
In this video we take on the still water canal stretch from Leitrim up through eight locks to Kilclare. Kilclare is a lovely stop off, there is a basic shop and a nice pub the Sheemore Inn that does food all day. It's just before the summit level too so you have all the hard work done by the time you get there!
On the Shannon Erne Waterway you operate the locks yourself, there are no lockkeepers. However there is a waterways patroller that will keep an eye on you and help out if you get into any difficulties. The locks are dead easy to operate. You operate them with a waterways smart card and they are fully automated. Hydraulics does all the hard work for you.
The Shannon Erne Waterway is made up a still water canal section, river sections and several lakes. This makes for a really beautiful and varied waterway trip. We were stunned at the number of Kingfishers we spotted along our journey. There are otters too but we didn’t spot any of them.
Check out our new shop at www.driftwood.tv/shop where you get your hands on our book 'Driftwood from the Shannon to the Marne' the humorous account of our first ever venture into the sea, and on to the French inland waterways.

Just gone through them - had I watched this first I would have known what I was heading into. Gerry and Seamus helped me through (im a lone boatman) - I'm half way up it. I think @waterwaysireland should have an app to control the gates from the boats, maybe they might develop this in future?

Paul Anderson. Hi Paul, thanks for that. We did it in about three hours. We had great help from Seamus which probably shaved a few minutes off what it would normally take.

Enjoyed video. Do you guys know what is the maximum air draught to get under the bridges is roughly?

Is the weather ever going to improve? It's been bad since.....last May! Well, it seems like that anyway.

World of Randometry. As sure I've compleatly given up on hoping for better weather. I think we will just have to get used to this miserable wet windy and chilly weather!

Interesting. How did you manage to go ahead the second lock without bumping to the bank and how did you climb the lock from the boat to the top without a ladder?

Mark 1. Hi Mark, to be honest we did hit the bank! Then sort of scraped along the bank and into the lock. Climbing the gate is not to be recommended, and I wouldn't try it again. If I'd fallen back the vlog would not have had a happy ending.

What is the air draft on the Canal? Looks a bit tight in some of the bridges you went under?

Neil Dinnen. Hi Neil I just checked it cos I wasn't too sure myself. The lowest bridge on the Shannon Erne Waterway is the bridge in in Ballyconnel which has an air draft of 3.2Mtrs at normal water levels. Hope that's not too low for your boat 👍
