  • My visit to the BFI IMAX to see OPPENHEIMER in genuine 15/70 IMAX including sequences from the projection booth. I give my thoughts on the film, the unrivalled quality of the 15/70 image and the incredible sound plus some audience reaction as we all first came out of the auditorium. Plus, Michael Ford, the Chief Projectionist gives his impression of the film and the image quality.
    As mentioned in this video here are some links to some other OPPENHEIMER 15/70 review videos which should be of interest and also a standard 70mm print projection booth video from Clark Teddles down under:
    1) Electricgeek (Andy) and his wife drove 200 miles from Ayr in Scotland to Manchester Printworks (one of only three genuine IMAX cinemas left in the UK in 2023) to see the 15/70 print - • I drove 400 MILES to s...

    3) Clark Teddles shot a wonderful video of the standard 70mm print being laced and projected at The Ritz in Sydney - • 70mm Oppenheimer short... - and this is being screened before every showing at The Ritz.
    4) Clark's video plays on the big screen as a prelude to every 70mm screening at The Ritz, Sydney and can be seen from the audience perspective here as shot by Rhett dW: • @ClarkTeddles Oppenhei...

    I saw this movie a total of 10 times
    1 time in Laser IMAX
    2 times in Xenon IMAX
    3 times in 70mm 5 perf
    4 times in 70mm IMAX
    An incredible movie on its own, and is just that much better on such a massive screen with outstanding and unmatched quality. This is the first movie I have ever seen in true 15/70 IMAX and I hope and pray it won't be the last. traveling to the UK to see an interstellar, TDK, or Oppenheimer screening there is absolutely on my bucket list now, the screen at the Dallas IMAX here in Texas is actually one of the smallest 15/70 screens and it was still incredible, so I can only imagine how good the BFI looks. Great video John

      INTERSTELLAR is being shown in shortly at the BFI IMAX as part of the science fiction season. But I think there will be plenty of opportunities to see it now that the industry has been firmly told that people want to see a large format film on film and not video projected. The size of the screen may not be as important as you think though Jacob because it's the definition, the clarity of the image that gives it a lot of the impact. Bigger is usually better though so in that regard perhaps the place to go is Melbourne in Australia who have the biggest screen of all genuine IMAX cinemas. Former genuine IMAX houses were bigger but they gave up the ability to screen IMAX.
      Don't rule out seeing TENET at a genuine IMAX either because the look of that film in 15/70 on a huge screen may be the best looking of the lot. DUNKIRK isn't far off though and may even pip it to the post.
      John.

    great video once again Jon ..I read an article earlier and apparently there has been a huge boost in demand for IMAX screenings and studios are taking note, so it looks like good news for the format in thanks to Nolan

      You're the second person who's told me something along those lines recently so I think that confirms that it is really happening. After the big downgrade of a few years ago when the film projectors were supplanted by inferior video projection it looks like balance will be returned to the universe pretty soon.

    EVEN if I did not see Oppenheimer in 15/70 IMAX Film version (but a Digital Imax version), the film is stunning, as is the audio and bass. The Bass blew me away whilst still seated. I (also) think Oppenheimer is a masterpiece and certainly for me THE cinema film of 2023.Like yourself, the 3hrs plus whizzed by and i did not feel a moment of boredom in it. Gripping film. Superb acting. Intense. You have to have your wits in place to follow all the 'time-jumps' as it were. Hats off to Mr Nolan. Superb! and thak you John for another really good video. regards, Roland.

      That's a darned good summary Roland. I don't really go to cinemas any longer owing to the downgraded image quality that proliferates now but there are exceptions and when the BFI IMAX has a genuine IMAX film on, that's one of them. However, I do think the three previous Christopher Nolan IMAX films are better IMAX examples owing to the nature of those films. It was wonderful to see a drama with IMAX sequences but there just isn't as high a percentage of the IMAX frames compared to the previous three. At least, I don't think there is. DUNKIRK and TENET are probably the two best overall image quality films I've ever seen but INTERSTELLAR is the best cinema experience I've ever had... twice! John.

      I live in Stockholm and would really like to visit London for a few days for BFI Imax (as well as sightseeing). Round trip cost is about 300€ total. It's crazy how much the thought of watching IMAX film compels me to get on a flight. Was a bit sad to see that both screenings for Interstellar for 1st and 7th of November were sold out. Hope I can catch it sometime next year. @@moviecollector5920

    I saw this at the Universal CityWalk AMC in Hollywood and it was by far the most pristine image I have ever seen in my life. I believe the print we saw is Nolan's personal print and the original that all the other prints are copied from. A highlight of my cinema adventures.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If that's a genuine IMAX then all the 15/70 IMAX prints have been struck from the camera negative. I don't know how the 70mm and 35mm prints have been done but possibly a duplicate, reduction negative so none have been struck from prints - which isn't possible anyway.

      There are only six 35mm prints in the UK Kevin so that's a rarity over here. Then again, that's twice as many 35mm prints as 15/70 prints. Let's hope this points the way for cinemas to get back to running real films again occasionally. They've got to be shot and finished on film though and none of this transfer to a computer, edit it and then put it back out to film from the digital intermediate because that loses too much. John.

    Hi John! Looks like you all had a great time and i really enjoyed seeing the reactions of the people you were with. Something different 👍
    I had a guy on my video trying to say the print would likely be struck from a 4K DI??? i told him this wasn’t the case as these prints were done photochemically from the negative so it was great to see you and the projectionist confirm that also. I explained to the person who commented on my video that what would be the point in the 15/70mm imax hubba-baloo around this movie if prints were being struck from a compressed, digital intermediate!?
    Anyway, thanks for the shoutout at the end you didn’t have to but it’s much appreciated 😊 Need to get another chat soon. Great video as always John 👌

      The person who commented about the lowly 4K video master file being used was wrong on this occasion as with all IMAX prints but the standard 70mm release of Death on the Nile last year apparently came from the 4K video master and I guessed that was the case when first looking at it. I hope you get a few views from the shout out Andy. You deserve it. John.

      I wonder if it would be better to have a ten minute interval in the middle anyway. Wouldn't be ideal as lacing up and firing it all up is the most stressful part of the whole job. Many of the 15/70 projectors around the world haven't done much over the past six years and just like classic cars if you don't drive them on occasion they'll let you know they're not happy about it. Yeah, the classic car analogy is an apt one. Unfortunately, it's also getting harder to find skilled projectionists. And I don't think the theaters think to give the projectors a run around the block from time to time.

      My opinion is that the BFI IMAX is now the pre-eminent cinema in Britain. It was always The Empire, Leicester Square for me but that got chopped up a few years ago so it's going to be difficult for me to ever go in there again. The frightening thing is that the bigger of the two chopped up parts of the cavernous auditorium is now [apparently] the largest capacity cinema in the country with just 730 seats. The terminal decline of cinema seems to be racing ahead now. I remember sitting in the Hammersmith Odeon with 3000 other patrons in 1990 for Total Recall. How times change. John.

The first 100 screenings of the print at the BFI IMAX were all sellouts which can't be too common in the modern world now that people tend to go and see a film on opening weekend or not at all.

      Glad you had the chance to see IMAX again Tomek. I don't regard any of the video projections as IMAX because they're not. If they had variations of the great IMAX name that would be preferable because then people would stand a chance of knowing they're not seeing the best possible format. The best non-IMAX IMAX is the dual laser projector which is just over 4K. Hardly IMAX but I suppose it's all about marketing and staying in business. After all, what else are IMAX branded cinemas going to screen without Christopher Nolan about?

I expect IMAX houses all over the world (all 30 ish of them) are going to want to cash in on the resurgence of interest in 15/70 film prints after OPPENHEIMER so maybe get on the email list for a few of the genuine IMAX theatres in possible holiday destinations and see if you can do that. I happened to work on the third Batman movie and decided to see the results in true imax. That is the only imax Hollywood movie I’ve seen. That sounds like THE DARK KNIGHT RISES then Cody. I haven't seen the IMAX print of that which is kept at the BFI IMAX but I plan to one day. All the Christopher Nolan IMAX films do these aspect ratio changes but it's possibly something that IMAX have in hand now as they've apparently developed a smaller IMAX camera so perhaps that is to facilitate shooting dialogue sequences. Impossible right now owing to the deafening clatter of an IMAX camera. Mr. Nolan's last three IMAX films were IMAX and standard 70mm and the standard 70mm shots appeared to be blown up a little to me giving an aspect ratio of around 1.90:1 to minimise the aspect ratio shifts. I'd have preferred them to have remained 2.20:1 but I suppose most people would prefer the blow-ups. As for the moving masking here in my home cinema, I set the masking to roughly envelop the projected image of each film or video. It's usually as simple as that other than films such as the Mr. Nolan IMAX releases on disc which have to have the top and bottom masking open as fully as possible meaning visible white areas during the 'Scope ratio or 2.20:1 sequences. I have covered the masking and how it moves in previous videos which I've linked to in the description field on the latest home cinema video.

IMAX has a glass capture device that goes up and down every 5 to 10 seconds (dependent on how it's set) and the idea is to get the dust sucked out but occasionally one or two of the little buggers can be stubborn and they reappear after the glass goes back in.

    • @moviecollector5920

      Morning Pieter. Gemini Man is the worst quality video I have ever looked at. I did mention how awful it is in an upload sometime ago after I'd purchased it because people were telling me it was the best thing they'd ever seen. It's all down to perceptions and youngsters who grew up playing video games will very much like the look of it and those of us who grew up looking at natural, high quality films will mostly not like the look of it. What is wrong with Gemini Man on 4K is that it was shot for a high quality 3D presentation in cinemas at 120fps. For 4K only one half of the 3D video could be used and without the 3D glasses over your eyes the depth of the imagery is lost which results in a flat version of an unrealistic looking movie. Being shot entirely on video at high speed lost the natural look because there is no shutter in a video camera or a video projector and what you end up is a final product that looks like it was an entirely computer generated cartoon.
      Sorry that isn't the answer you were hoping for. I have kept that 4K disc so I can use it as an example of how awful video can look even when the makers think they are producing something special. Having said all this, it was made for 3D and I bet the 3D effect of this one is just about the best ever produced. Should never have released flat but when there's money to be made...

'Nuff said about that then and you've probably twigged that you and I feel the same way about it. It's possible Gemini Man doesn't come across as so fake on some televisions because they tend to be setup to look a little fake already. I have my equipment setup to make video look like film as closely as possible and Gemini Man doesn't come anywhere close in that regard and there's nothing that can be done about it. It's more of an amusement ride than a movie and I bet it was wonderful for children and youngsters to experience it on a huge screen with active 3D glasses. It just doesn't work as a flat movie in the home. if there's a 3D Blu-ray release then that would be the home video version to go. I'd have probably really enjoyed it in 3D when I was a teenager. I'm not alone in my opinion of how it looks on 4K but we do all tend to be older and I think those of us that do feel the same want movies to look like real life. @@TheFlyingAudiophile I don't know what the figures are currently but before the pandemic struck around 50% of all cinema screens in the UK were a lowly 2K. I don't expect many will have upgraded given the precarious position most of them are in having done hardly any business in the past 3 to 4 years. Top Gun: Maverick and the Avatar sequel got people in though so at least there's been something prior to OPPENHEIMER and the Barbie movie. Video projection is not quite up to the top capabilities of 35mm but it is easier to put it on huge screens because more light can be put through I think. 35mm sequences in INTERSTELLAR suggest that blowing those sequences up onto the IMAX frame is superior to most video projections with the possible exception of videos shot at 6K or over, dependent on lenses and other criteria when such a movie was shot. There are no moving parts on video projectors and that makes them difficult to feature in a video. They're simply boring to look at but show someone a film projector and they'll be mesmerized all day.
      There are less than 30 cinemas able to screen OPPENHEIMER in IMAX. I think 18 are in the USA and 6 in Canada. That doesn't leave many. Biggest screen is Melbourne in Australia since the German one gave up on the format and is now only video projection.

    Hi John I saw Oppenheimer at Belfast Cineworld IMAX last night. Once it started (15 minutes into the film 🙄) I have to say it was tremendous. No noticeable letter boxing. The Change in aspect ratio was subtle but visible but certainly full advantage was taken of the screen size. I can’t get accurate specs for Belfast so not sure if I’m seeing the full effect? It was however just short of painfully loud. Is that normal for IMAX?

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Belfast no longer has an IMAX Brendan so what you saw there was a faux IMAX using a video projector. The sound should be the same though and although it's loud it shouldn't hurt like it does in some cinemas. Sounds like your local cinema has a bit of a sub-standard or knackered sound system which does happen if it's been driven too loud for too long. At the BFI IMAX you feel everything but that is probably the best sound system I've ever heard anywhere in the world. I did give up on cinema before the big downgrade in 2011 though so I'm not as up to date as I was until things all started going wrong. To see IMAX in the UK you have to check with one of the three genuine IMAX cinemas (might soon be four when Bradford re-opens as they're apparently putting the IMAX GT 15/70 projector back in) that they are screening a 15/70 print before just assuming you'll be seeing the real deal. The three genune IMAX cinemas are BFI IMAX, Ronson Theatre in the Science Museum and Manchester Printworks.

    I saw it in IMAX a while back, and it was awesome. Admittedly, I wasn't as struck by the image quality as I thought I would be, but the way it enveloped my vision was amazing. Before you ask, I don't have vision problems (at least as far as I know), and my optometrist said I have 20/15 vision. I'd say the quality was about the same as a 4K TV, and combining that with the giant screen gives an image that looks like how you'd see it if you were there. Something that stuck out was that the regular 70mm footage didn't look that good. Can't say this was shocking since it's a third of the quality of regular IMAX footage projected on an IMAX screen. Also, if you're going to see a real IMAX film, come into the theater before the film starts. The majority of the audience entered as the film started, possibly to skip the trailers at regular theaters. Real IMAX has no trailers to save space, which I knew beforehand but that possibly wasn't known to everyone else. It wasn't a big deal, but it wasn't very considerate. Overall, it was great and I might go see it again to pick up on what I may have missed (it's a very dialogue heavy film with intense themes, so a second viewing may be necessary) and see the glorious IMAX footage before the film's already extended run ends.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The standard 70mm looks to be blown up to about 1.90:1 to me Duncan thereby reducing the overall quality. This was the same with TENET and DUNKIRK which I consider to be better films for the genuine IMAX format as they're both big screen action films. It's wonderful to see a drama using IMAX where possible though but that does minimize the volume of IMAX shots. If you do go to see it again try to take in the image quality around the bomb sequence where it's all IMAX and consider how good a 4K television would look if that same image on the 4K telly was blown up to that size. It would not and does not compare. 4K video projection is excellent these days and if a movie has been shot using large format film or even shot at something like 8K video and then shrunk down to 4K it will usually surpass the achievable quality of a movie shot using standard 35mm film. The natural look of a film is lost as soon as digital video is used anywhere though but Doug Trumbull did work out what caused that before he died and he said it was the fact that there is no shutter. I'd add to that because there's also no film passing between the lens and the lamp as there is with film projection so that's another factor because it further diffuses the light. All this is missing from video projection and that's why it often looks so harsh and you feel like you need sunglasses.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I feel the same way Clive. TENET, DUNKIRK and INTERSTELLAR are his most entertaining films and I think this slots in at number 4. The 15/70 print does make it far more special than it otherwise would be but I don't suppose that comes as any surprise. It was in IMAX aspect ratio 1.43:1 but I'm not sure about the standard 70mm sequences. With DUNKIRK and TENET I was of the opinion they'd been optically enlarged to more closely match the IMAX scenes and I estimate them to be around 1.90:1. I'm not certain though but there did not look to be 2.20:1 to me. INTERSTELLAR kept all the various original aspect ratios and the image during the anamorphic 35mm sequences appeared to be the normal 35mm 'Scope ratio so there is a precedent for my opinion of the 70mm sequences in OPPENHEIMER.

    Thank you for the video! The last time I saw an actual 1570 IMAX print of a theatrical film was “The Dark Knight Rises” in Chongqing, China. I’m currently back in Minnesota, USA and unfortunately (but at the same time fortunately) the only large format screening of “Oppenheimer” in the area was on 5-perf 70mm. The image was beautiful, thanks to being all photochemical and very little use of a DI, while the sound quality was limited by the room’s standard DTS 5.1 setup. Good but far from perfect compared to the IMAX sound system. I will say, while watching the 5-perf 70mm print, I’d be lying if I said I could spot the 1570mm IMAX footage. The clear sign for me was the depth of field, and perhaps due to the optical reduction from 1570mm IMAX to 5-perf 70mm, the visual difference wasn’t as evident in my opinion. Of course, the screen was your standard theater screen but fortunately masked to the correct 2.20:1 ratio. I’m sure if I had seen the 1570mm IMAX print (and on a huge IMAX screen), the switch from 5-perf 70mm to 1570mm IMAX footage would be more clear. Which reminds me with “The Dark Knight Rises”, the 35mm anamorphic footage on the 1570mm IMAX print (in terms of visual quality) was way too obvious that even my wife was able to spot the visual difference. The 15/70 isn't always obvious other than the aspect ratio shift in a genuine IMAX house but usually the increased light coming into the lens and onto the film is a big giveaway. I'm not sure but I think the standard 70mm shots may be a little optically enlarged because the aspect ratio seemed to be 1.90:1 (ish) for those sequences which was the same with TENET and DUNKIRK but certainly not with INTERSTELLAR. @@moviecollector5920 I totally agree. Keep it at the original aspect ratio. The 2.20:1 footage is already being optically enlarged onto the IMAX film. There isn’t a need to enlarge it more. Which reminds me, I personally think the IMAX footage is somewhat of a gimmick and not being used to the full visual quality. “Oppenheimer” was filmed with a 2.20:1 ratio in mind and the IMAX footage is just simply opening up the top and bottom image (of course marked with safety zones during filming). The added visual image wasn’t really the priority and is similar with the case of open matted flat films to full frame 1.33:1 where these is too much head or legroom. Of course, if the IMAX footage was filmed with a true 1.43:1 aspect ratio from day one, we’d be losing heads and bodies when watching in any cropped format in both flat or scope. Oh well…

      Get onto the BFI IMAX web site here: www.bfi.org.uk/bfi-imax and you'll see it's on until middle of September but I think it will be making appearances for some months yet. When you've got a money maker you might as well run that rather than the latest superhero tosh shot on video and projected on video. People increasingly want the real thing and the best presentation in a cinema again. Wonderful news. Let's hope it wakes the industry up. And get on the BFI IMAX email list which is free of course. Let me know if you can't find where to do it and I'll have a look. John.

      Dune Part Two s entirely shot and finished video so no IMAX I'm afraid. What the IMAX Corp. are referring to is one of the lower quality video formats which carried the great name. I expect it will look a lot better than Dune though which was messed about with a little too much but still looked surprisingly good in spite of all that. IMAX as far as I and many others are concerned is 15/70 film - shot and finished on 15/70 film - and the other lesser formats should carry different names to differentiate them.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Any film with genuine IMAX sequences included is worth seeing at one of the few remaining genuine IMAX cinemas. There were many sequences in this but not as many as Mr. Nolan's previous two or even three I think. It is a talkie but it's so good even though I agree that it's not ideally suited to the large film format in the way the previous three action adventures are. Sadly the latest Mission Impossible wasn't an IMAX film which is a shame because the fourth film was and I'd like to see that skyscraper sequence in IMAX because I'm sure it would have me falling out of my seat. Genuine IMAX is estimated to be around the computer image equivalent of 18K but I don't think you can quantify it that way simply because it is so far ahead of anything else. Having seen OPPENHEIMER in the best movie presentation format it's going to be difficult to watch it on video. I have the same trouble with INTERSTELLAR, DUNKIRK and TENET. As good as 4K home movie discs are they just don't come close.

If it's a true reflection of her at all that is. His relationship with her seems to have been used to discredit him later on.
      I don't think there are any IMAX cinemas in New Zealand at all. Only around 30 in the whole world now so let's hope the success of this film causes a resurgence of them.
