Seeing a 1570 film movie at the bfi imax is an unparalleled experience. If I’m ever in London again I’ll definitely make sure to revisit the bfi imax.
Great video man. Thank you.. I saw Oppenheimer there last week, sound was mind blowing, and picture so so huge!! Really gets you excited for further films. The Creator and Dune 2 looked awesome . So can’t wait to go see them there. Luckily I’m inly 50 miles away in Brighton. We have an IMAX in Crawley, but it pales in comparison.

I watched Oppenheimer at Science Museum and it was amazing experience. I guess now I need to watch it at BFI.
Did you watch in 3D ? I will be travelling to London this week and is planning to watch Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. This movie is available in both 2D and 3D. I am not sure which version to watch @BFI Imax. I have never watched any movies there. I am a bit hesitant in watching in 3D due to my past experiences at other movie halls where 3D experience was not that great for me. But maybe 3D experience there at BFI Imax can be great. Please share your experience which can help me to decide between 2D and 3D.

The BFI is without any doubt one of the best Cinemas in the World. IMAX 1570 center Position, nearly all popular 1570 Movies in House, brutal good sound, beautiful Auditorium, excellent Crew and more

I believe that the Technik Museum Sinsheim Dome IMAX has backlit screen before showtime to showcase the speaker system, was last there 4 years ago, so it might have changed since
Sinsheim is not far from Leonberg, another distraction on my list.
Very lucky to live only an hour away, the Southbank cinema is five minutes from BFI imax and another fantastic venue for film fans.
I never been at Southbank yet, have to visit it one day.
@boredtech It's a great way to spend a day, classic films, a BFI shop and cafe and a Mediateque with screening boothes where you can plug your headphones into one of the screens and watch loads of British classics and other BFI archive material. Highly recommend a visit.
I love the roster of films they show at Southbank, but my back finds the seats almost impossible to sit in for the length of a long film. I wish they would refurbish the seats from a 1980's style to modern seats.

I have mixed feelings about BFI IMAX. I find the seats under odeon really uncomfortable and after the refurb the seats are now passable (I was there 2 days ago). Technically its really good!
Tech wise it's reference class cinema. I can agree with you about seats. I'm almost 2 meters tall and it's not enough legroom for me. But over all it's a outstanding movie theatre.
I found them better than odeon luxe over the duration. Overall very good seat's but not quite as good as regular (not luxe) Isense due to leg room but I do prefer the angle in this imax. Other odeon IMAX seat's are good but prefer the BFI imo. Definitely better than some Cineworld I've been to.

Here in Italy we have the Arcadia Cinema (located in Melzo, near Milan, with 5 screens) which also lights up the speaker behind the screen for a few second before the beginning of the show.
The biggest auditorium of the 5, called Energy, it's equipped with the biggest screen of the country (30x16,5 meters, which was the biggest one in the world at the time it opened back in 1997) and the current biggest Dolby Atmos configuration in the world provided by Meyer Sound (70.000 watt of power). It's widely considered one of the very best theatres in europe (it won the ICTA award for the best screen in europe in 2017) and it's capable of showing films in a dual 4K laser projection (by Christie) and it's also currently showing Oppenheimer in the 70mm/5perf film format.

I was very young wjen I went to the BFI imax. Saw the Disney movie "Tangled", and I cant remember alot about it apart from how huge the auditorium is, and the waiting area ourside the screen
No doubt, It's a great cinema.
@@boredtech absolutely, it's one of those places you have to be in and experience at least once in your life.
The 1.43:1 dual laser IMAX in Karlsruhe has back lights for the screen to show the speakers as well. There is an IMAX demo that runs in that theater and used to run at the BFI IMAX as well. During the demo they play sound from the individual speaker clusters and illuminate the screen when playing from those.
I think they also do this in Stockholms IMAX

It’s cool that they have those two other projectors in the projection booth to show non-IMAX 3D and traditional 35mm and 5/70mm films. I don’t know of any other IMAX theaters that have that capability.
Also, the Omnimax (IMAX dome) theater at the Milwaukee Public Museum has lighting for the speakers behind the screen.
Agree, BFI IMAX is a truly unique venue.
Never been in Omnimax, would be great to visit it one day.

Unfortunately they only play 40 minutes documentaries on IMAX.

Great video - thanks. I'm looking forward to seeing Dune 2 at the BFI IMAX in a few weeks time. I'm not sure how well 4K Digital IMAX will scale up to 15/70 film but at least the audio will be awesome. But for me the most immersive film format was 3-strip Cinerama on a huge curved screen that I saw as a kid. The roller coaster sequence in 'This is Cinerama' is the only time I had to cover my eyes during a film.
The IMAX in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida,USA it's also backlight. I think in the past they run the same demo that @VariTimo is talking about that shows where the speakers behind the screen are located. The Imax in Ft Lauderdale is also running Oppenheimer In 15/70mm film. They are also equipped with 4k Digital Laser Projection system! And the screen is smaller by just a few meters compared to to BFI London..
I’m quite surprised they don’t have a dual laser system tbh. I wonder how much a single one of those projectors cost...
There is a reason for that, it's just not enough room for dual laser.
Are the shots of the seating from before the seating change? The upper rows dont look the same as when i visited two times this year

What company welded the screen, is there a video on how they are made?
I have no idea they do traditional 35/70mm at BFI IMAX! Not sure what screening they do, I would've thought the rescreenings of old stuff are usually in digital. That said, it's still sad that they don't have a dual laser setup to fill that screen, like many other venues do (I think London science museum does)
They had to choose: Get dual laser and loose film projector or keep film projector and get single laser.
It's simply not enough room, you can see how busy the projection booth is.
Lots of films have never made it onto digital, and this is the British Film Institute so they want to be able to screen all sorts of old films occasionally.
@@boredtech Yes I understand they've made the choice by watching your amazing video! Before I was just thought it was a bad call. As a huge fan for the 1:43:1 aspect ratio, I'm still sad, but I understand the decision - there's just not many commercial films that are in this aspect ratio

This was a good cinema in 2000, now it's an expensive, uncomfortable, dated screen picture and sound wise...
Gorgeous theatre. Interesting that their Laser projector doesn't do the full 1.43 image size. I feel like that would be a bummer if they played a movie like Dune and it didn't fill the entire screen.

I have yet to see a real 1.43:1 IMAX theater. Only have 1.9:1 IMAX Xenon screens near me.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of 3D. Few first minutes of the movie looks cool, but then my eyes get used to it and I stop noticing the effect.

Biggest 15/70 IMAX Screen in the World is in Australia
Biggest IMAX Digital Screen in the World is in Germany
IMAX with Laser (4K), not IMAX Digital (Xenon) (2K).
Personally I think this screen and cinema is very uncomfortable
For me the seat needs to be one of the main focuses however here they are small and unpleasant
Every one has his own priorities.
Picture not better than dolby vision and sound not better than dolby atmos, dts x equiped with 64 speakers 128 channels, providing immersive picture and sound.
Have you ever been there? I would bet not having that opinion. The larger screen size adds WAY more immersion than the potentially slightly higher colour range of DV, and while a agree somewhat about Atmos, I find Atmos at home in a much smaller environment where you can position yourself perfectly for the bubble effect to be way better than underwhelming cinema Atmos, I've always found Dolby cinemas to be a bit disappointing compared to home theatre where it really shines.
Also every auditorium is different you can't just say one brand is better. BFI is as good as any Dolby Cinema I've been to, properly acoustically isolated and calibrated, and better than your average chain that installs a Dolby system and doesn't know how to properly set it up.
