The only logic behind the gas tank under half thing is that the fuel pump (if it's internal to the fuel tank) is not completely submerged in fuel and not keeping itself as cool as it could or should be. I heard the closer to empty it gets the more likely it is to get any dirt or other crap that might be floating in there to stuff up your engine.
