- The engine house for Jope's Shaft is the best preserved example of the South Caradon mining district. Now covered in ivy, nestled among trees, the engine house seems to emerge from nature itself.
The shaft underneath the engine house was opened in the 1850s, with the engine house opening a decade later. The mine closed in 1885 during the decline of Cornish mining - many of those who would have worked on the site emigrated to other mining districts in Australia, South Africa and the Americas.
