    (Please share, guys and girls 👍)
    In this video I get airborne real world weather out of RAF Valley to conduct an actual sortie I have flown for real as a flying instructor in the Royal Air Force for 20 years.
    I try and find an area for aerobatics practise but the weather beats me so I climb to FL200, fly through an airway and descend to do my aeros in South Wales, UK. I then recover for a downwind join at St Athan followed by a Practise Forced Landing (PFL) and a circuit to land.
    Get taught by a real flying instructor!
    If you wish to skip the brief 👇

    Hi Tim, absolutely love the channel and the great content you’re putting out! I’m an ex-bootneck (86-09) like your Dad, loved the camping dit you told about him with the burnt out tent! Very touching, what period did he serve in the Corps?
    I’m also definitely a frustrated fighter pilot too, been flight simming since 92 and still going strong now with DCS and P3D etc. In 1997 I had the privilege of being selected to undergo JTAC training at Leeming JFACTSU. As you will know trainee JTAC’s get a 90 or so minute back seater in a Hawk during the course in order to enable them to listen to the controls from the guys on the ground and see things from a pilots eye perspective. Have to say it was probably the best 90 mins of my life. My front seater on the day was a Sqn Ldr “Sincs” Sinclair, you may know him?
    He even let me do a loop and a couple of other basic aerobatic manoeuvres under his instructions. Funny thing is at one point during the sortie he asked me to keep the jet straight and level while he sorted out the next 9-line on the map. Afterwards when he re-took control be asked me if I had ever flown an aircraft before, I said well no but I fly sims, he laughed and said he didn’t realise PC sims were that good!
    Also, love to hear about Angelsey and Valley again, my family had a cottage there called Clegir Mayr in the 70’s and we spent many happy Summer holidays there. I definitely think that my life long love of military aviation was stirred by visits to the RAF Valley air shows, seeing the Arrows in their Folland Gnat’s and also watching the Lightning’s that were based there scream vertically skyward out of sight! Fricking awesome mate!
    Anyway, enough dit spinning for one day! Keep the hoofing vids coming Tim! Thanks v much.

      You should absolutely give flight sims a go. You don’t need a LOT of expensive equipment (but it does help a little). It’s an incredibly rewarding feeling when you get an aircraft flown properly. I can only speak as a flight simmer and not a pilot of course - I can image real pilots feel that same level of satisfaction though :)

    I find it a little ironic that a fighter pilot feels sick in VR when a non-fighter pilot like me can fly for hours in VR and not feel a thing. I believe it's due to the fact that as a non-fighter pilot, I've never experienced G forces in a pull, so when my body doesn't feel them, it doesn't care. Whereas a fighter pilot's brain expects those forces and when it doesn't feel them, the brain assumes you must have been poisoned and wants to get the poison out. :)

    Hi Tim, thanks for that, keep 'em coming. I have the JF Hawk in P3D and it is bit jittery laterally. Glad you're trying DCS (shame they lost out on the Hawk). As for reading docs in VR, in DCS you can build a kneeboard to carry any docs you want to see in cockpit (images about 800x600px). For X-plane and P3D etc I found this which may be of interest:

  • @jadams3427
    @jadams3427 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice one again. You fly it well considering the JF Hawk wing and other things are so bad.
    I have been reverse engineering the Hawk since X-Plane 6. JF have it somewhat incorrect, I think. Their wing has only one element in X-Plane, and only one, rough aerofoil file. Each wing element should have two for Reynolds numbers at each end of the operational range. The Hawk wing is best made of at least 4 wing elements, because it tapers in chord and thickness, so it would require 8 aerofoil files. BAe would never help with aerofoil curves, so you have to reverse engineer from data that is out there. I have a few books, plus the T-1a manual. I have fixed my JF Hawk flight model. The CofG was not correct, and all the control surface deflections were excessive to 'fix' these inaccuracies.
    In your slow roll you lost height, but the JF aerofoil is badly modelled especially for inverted flight, in my view. I did not see what airspeed you had at the end of the roll, but I bet it was low.

    • @FastJetPerformance
      @FastJetPerformance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's as similar that I can 'fly' it but does lack in many areas.

      @J Adams - Are you happy to share your suggestions for C of G adjustment and other tweaks you feel make the flight model more accurate?

    • @jadams3427
      @jadams3427 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shanemorris4612 I have been thinking of making a record of all the things I corrected. The stock model really has a lot wrong. Tim just flies so well and monitors everything, and makes pilot corrections. I believe an entity called Thranda made the flight model. They just made it flyable by setting huge control surface deflections. X-Plane models things fairly correctly, so you should be able to set the real Hawk deflections if all else is correct. Mine has the correct deflections.

  • @ghostdog688
    @ghostdog688 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    For those aviation nerds too scared to ask the question, I’ll go first:
    I’ve seen you refer to the “dead wing” many times, and as near as I can tell, it’s the wing on your intended turn direction.
    I think I understand the safety implications of checking the side of the jet that will shortly be in your blind spot, but can you clarify this and tell me if there’s any other considerations I’ve missed around this?

    • @james01061
      @james01061 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ghostdog688 from what I can tell, the dead wing is the side that you’ve been turning away from, if that makes sense. For example: 1) Turn left 2) roll out of the turn to level 3) check the right wing (dead wing) of the aircraft for any traffic that you couldn’t have seen during the turn. Due to the fact that you would’ve been looking left in the direction of the turn. Anyone please correct me if I’m wrong.

    Again, thanks for sharing, and I hope that You will not abandon X-plane and the Hawk completely....
    I'm not sure that I got it right (< I'm not so good at listening fast.....;- ), but I think that You mentioned that the Hawk didn't quite react as it should, just to say that Thranda Design (< the author of the Hawk) will absolutely love to have some constructive critique....
    -However, the landing looked as if You have done thát for many years, which could indicate that the handling is pretty close to the original, however, it could of course also just be Your experience kicking in, with You adjusting to what You see and feel....
    Btw, X-plane 11 is in the end of its run, and I'll think that all the small annoying things like for instance the way too small map won't be fixed until X-plane 12.
    They have worked hard to deliver Vulkan, and when the 11.50 beta goes final, then I'm pretty certain that they will focus completely on X-plane 12.
    -Which will be absolutely beautiful, just like X-plane 11 was a major step up from 10, as they have a whole pile of headroom (

The key take aways for me are plan, plan, plan, keep your brain ahead of the aircraft (config, emergencies, position, ATC etc) and manage your speed carefully. If DCS is gifting you an F5 and Spitfire, I hope you’ll enjoy it.
    A virtual squadron is currently working on a T45C as well that will be freely available when it’s out. I realise it’s not 100% a Hawk, but it would be interesting to see how it handles compared to your recollection of the T2. And Im sure if you reached out to them they might be able to let you in to evaluate it.
    DCS has the eastern Black Sea area (Georgia and a little of Russia) for free, Nevada, Normandy and The Persian Gulf are available for a fee.
    Upcoming maps are going to be Syria, and the creator of the AV-8B is working on a FRS.1 and a Falklands map to match. A long way away will probably see that same dev drop the EE Lightning - exciting times!
    DCS are also handling a south China seas map.
    I’d still love to see the UK flying areas modelled, the Mach Loop and the Scottish Highlands make for a fantastic flying environment, and I’d love to jet off out of Leuchars on Q.

    Looking forward to you in the DCS Harrier. It's a whole lotta fun. Enjoyed this video too with the challenging airspace boundary constraints. The F-16C (CBU-97 for the win) and F/A-18C (carries everything) are great strike platforms too. Where is the sweepstake entry to win an Aeralis-B ?

    Absolutely brilliant. I'm not even a powered pilot and I'm learning SO MUCH watching you. I don't "feel sick" or have any worries about VR /per se/ - however your frame rate seems low when you're in VR and the response to your head movements therefore seems jerky and unnatural. Apart from that it's FAR better than without VR. Obviously for you it's better because you're properly immersed in the experience which is more like "really flying".

    • @stonelaughter
      @stonelaughter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      p.s. I love that you operate as if the sky was "real"; asking air traffic for stuff - taking "real life" precautions like checking the dead wing and not doing aeros when the weather isn't great - in a flight sim it would be all too easy to say "ahhhh, fuggit" but you don't.

    Great job on the video, really good content. Talking while flying is this for us viewers, or is it something that is trained in for all pilots, and is there ever a need to be silent? Regardless I am trying to talk to myself in sim which is confusing my fiancée but seems to be a good way to remind myself to check the instrument dials and over my wings.

    • @FastJetPerformance
      @FastJetPerformance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Young pilots often talk when flying, but, it takes more mental capacity which is why we advise a quiet cockpit but pilots will berate themselves especially on an instrument approach, it's natural but a quiet cockpit is much better.

      I'm impressed that xplane has been upgraded with vulkan. It really needs a visual update though rather than relying on 3rd party. It wouldn't put orbx out of business. They are releasing FS2020 content as well.
      DCS is very good but the engine is rather ancient and in dire need of Vulkan. Unfortunately that is a very long way off. VR performance on DCS is horrendous because they're relying solely on VR driver motion smoothing at the moment to make it baseline playable. I wish they'd support VR hardware acceleration on Nvidia GPUs.

    • @ghostdog688
      @ghostdog688 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DCS is indeed awesome as a combat sim. XPLANE is probably better for training like this where nothing leaves the rail :)
      However, that Hawk was AWFUL. It wasn’t completed, and was unflyable with the bugs.
      And no, I’m not being dramatic - the gyros would sometimes tumble and fail just on taxi, let alone any kind of g-Force (like take off or turns).
      I have never regretted a purchase so much as that one, because the devs folded up and walked away from DCS, leaving a module that wasn’t functional, and wasn’t compatible with later versions of the game. I was unable to get a refund despite the aircraft being useless, incomplete and incompatible with the multiplayer environment (where I fly almost exclusively). I couldn’t even exchange or part-exchange it for one of the other trainers available (like the L39 or the C101.
      I felt bad for ED (the people who write DCS), because they were left with a massive liability and they ended up rewriting their 3rd party licence agreements such that if any company went bust or left the scene, they would have access to the code to allow minor updates and maintenance
