RAF Fighter Pilot Tries XPlane 11 in Red Arrows Hawk

  • As a former RAF Flying Instructor and fighter pilot, I try out X Plane 11 in the Hawk T1 to see how realistic it is.
This is just me trying out X-Plane on VR - if you like this video, leave a comment and I'll make more content and instructional videos in the aircraft.
If you are a foreign student pilot, I apologise for the speech but this is a trial - I will be clearer next time and use a better microphone.
So, come and fly from RAF Valley in North Wales on an early morning flight.
I have flown about 1,000 hours in the Hawk T1 in my RAF career.
    For help with pilot maths...

This is how it should be! Head moving around all the time, it’s not a fun fare ride. Love your quickness to it all, as you said, it’s a quick jet.
I’m ex airdespatcher from RAF Lyneham, despatch crew in C130. Have flown Gliders and light aircraft but not Jets, oh! How I wish. So, here, we have the next best thing...simulator. No actual g forces or that lovely engineering oil smells, but visually and audibly close.

Thanks Tim, that was incredible. Loved seeing your workflow in the cockpit and your scanning drills. While you'll get a lot of different opinions based on peoples preference I think the video duration without cuts was excellent, no bling intros fine - just get into it, and in-cockpit sounds are useful. Keeping the video editing workload down means you'll make more without tiring of it, and I'm sure I'm not alone in loving all the knowledge you are putting out there on aviation and human factors.
You are very considerate with your head rotation rate but for DCS folks (plus I'm ex-RNZAF) many are used to full rate movement and it would be instructive so see your scan patterns in real time. It depends on your audience I guess whether you want to be inclusive of ab initio folks or those with more sim experience.
As for what else I would like to see. Well going through each Hawk training sortie with the skills of each would be really great. eg stalls/spins/inverted spins and their recovery in the Hawk would be illustrative. Anything unclassified from Fence In to Fence Out over a ground strike is also of benefit to us DCS ground pounders.
The two-way radio with falsetto response is hilarious. Please don't ever stop doing that, it cracks me up. Many thanks.
ps. There's no Donate button on the FJP page that I can see. While you don't need to bleg it would be nice if we show our appreciation and you could take your lovely wife to dinner on us :)

This was outstanding, thank you! I am a private pilot and feel like I just received a lesson from an RAF instructor!! So many lessons/takeaways here for private pilots...using the phrase “travel” for landing gear and flaps, setting/using heading bugs and planning for emergency return, looking for weather on climb out, using timing to confirm fuel flow and looking for traffic (always). I am an expat living in the U.S. so I am especially grateful for the numerous (and entirely appropriate) references to the almighty cup of tea. I also want to echo the earlier comment on a donate button - I have paid for flight lessons and learned a lot less! Thanks again, would love to see more.

I loved it. This is what flight sim people love. I can’t speak for people who are already pilots, but for simulator pilots there is a great hunger to understand how things are done properly. That’s what most of us are using flight simulators for. I always wanted to be a pilot in the RAF as a boy. Unfortunately I couldn’t and ended up joining the Army (sorry). That was back in 82. But I never lost my love of flying and particularly military flying. Simulators of the sophistication we now enjoy them (have you tried DCS? I love it if you reviewed some of the models there), gives us a taste of what I missed. So yes please, more if you can do it. I am subscribing. Thank you.

Tim, loved this video. I know the fundamentals are the same for a lot of things in flying but I'd really like to see how the military approach some things different. The small things like gear travels as you say instead of gear up are really interesting and beneficial in my opinion. Different philosophy but it makes sense. I bet there are lots of things like that for different scenarios such as stalling, crosswind technique (check kick close) I think you say that vary from the commercial/GA world. Some of the best fun I've had is always flying with people who are ex-fast jet. You always learn something you didn't know or a better and more logical way to do simple things. The big thing I'd like to see is how you'd teach navigation to be accurate within seconds for attack runs and maybe see what the map you use looks like when annotated for planning etc. Great that you are doing this, I enjoy watching people like stevo1kinevo fly for the views, production and places he goes however, a lot of pilots on this who are self proclaimed experts (a certain Canadian who shall remain unnamed) tend to put me off sometimes. I really think there is a chance for you to teach things on this and actually have the experience and knowledge to do it. It would be a far better listen and watch. . GuidoWarneke is another good guy who shows a lot of single pilot biz jet vids around the world from his job (US,UK, Middle East) and explains checklists and his flights. Very textbook but enjoyable. Look forward to more 👍🏻

Great video Tim, covering a hugely important topic. Airmanship is not something routinely seen on TH-cam videos but is absolutely essential to real world aviation and is one of the key differences between sim and reality.
Study sims have accurate system modelling but don't simulate such things as flying around in the very congested un-controlled lower airspace in the UK which is potentially very high risk. There is a difference between watching and learning as well as a difference between doing and understanding. Thanks for passing on your considerable experience.

Loved this, very informative insight to the real world procedures for us armchair pilots, I'm not sure if it was just the texture clarity being set a bit low but if you dont have it already perhaps Orbx's True Earth GB may help with a couple of visual nav references where the stock mesh doesn't seem right. If you dabble with DCS at all it would be good to see some combat orientated content although there isn't much of an RAF presence in the sim.

As a former 747 pilot and current Type Rating instructor with no military background I wasn’t sure what to expect from your video!! Would it be another fast jet guy showing off how good he was? Would there be any real information? Would the sim even be relatively realistic?( not been on a PC flight simulator since MSFS 2000 came out!!) I found the sim surprisingly good, lots of interesting information and demonstrations of workflows where we would ALWAYS use a checklist!! Also crazy watching you fly through the loop and all over North Wales. Spent most of my childhood near barmouth, dolgellau, Mac, Bala etc. Seen so many a/c at low level.

Just to add you can toggle the arrow on and off by setting it as a button on your joystick. I'd also recommend using photo scenery by Orbx which will completely transform the ground reference points.

That was THE best JF Hawk T1 video that I have seen, great to see a real Hawk Pilot behind the stick. Only reservation I have is the clarity of your VR, maybe there is a way to address this.
Have a look at Orbx scenery True Earth GB Central, it covers most of North Wales, and with videos like this, I’m sure Orbx would be happy to donate some scenery to you, great promotion for them.
I am looking forward to seeing more like this, if you have time. Thank you.

This so reminds me of when I was in flying training, so many flashbacks. I would love a series on this. BTW Have you considered the possibility of selling your services as a flight instructor online? Many of the DCS trainer modules e.g. L-39 are dual cockpit. I'd pay good money for that!

Love it, took me back to the mid 80's when I made tea and coffee on the desk at 63, Sam Toyne (sp) used to have fantastic pre landing checks. Keep these coming Tim. Perhaps fly from a proper RAF Seaside base at CHR.

I was once fishing in the sea in a small sailing boat near Rhosneigr, right next to RAF valley, dozing off minding my own business, when two hawks flew over at extreme speed and low altitude, directly overhead, and scared the absolute crap out of me, then they rolled off and headed away. I’m sure they did it for a laugh.

    • @FastJetPerformance
      @FastJetPerformance  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Normally we are seriously too busy for that, the cockpit workload is immense and fishing boats have birds around them and birds love to be sucked into engines. Saying that, sometimes I find a small boat and turn into a small child (time to buzz the tower!) 😂
