To be honest, I was so happy when Korea lost for holding 2030 World Expo, they don't deserve it, they couldn't even handle a BTS concert in Busan, and they didn't exempt BTS.

They did not seek any exemption, they planned to serve all along. On Suga’s talk show they said they originally planned to take the break after the big 2020 world tour that was cancelled by cov!d. Then they planned a couple more dates but got pushed back by Grammy performances and the Busan concert. It was politicians and representatives of OTHER k-pop groups that wanted their Kpop artists to get exemptions and used BTS’s name without them actually asking for it. As ARMY I am proud they are serving and doing so well. On the recent film where his friend Park Seo Joon and PD Na gave him a surprise early birthday celebration, V even talked about how he heard his father’s stories about his service and how he’s always looked forward to it. He applied for and was approved to be in special forces SDT-which he knows will challenge him. I can’t even begin to imagine the backlash they would get from the public and fans of other groups if they got an exemption. Now they are making everyone proud. 💜

Common sense no one would want to interrupt career high point. Culturally including cancel culture element, they could not have said their true feelings. I believe true feelings were implicit in their waiting to see what government final decision would be after years of some, including previous president, suggesting exemption or shortened service for them. Shortened service would have been so much fairer.

i agree, and i wouldn't be surprised if it's bad karma since bts gets people interested in korean language and kdrama, major importance for korean economy. think about the message, that if korea itself doesn't care enough about their kpop idols and fair treatment, why should the rest of the world care about kpop?

@@sc33h3o3 Even before our last four enlisted, views and attendance for the MAMA and MMA shows were WAY down... because BTS wasn't there. Meanwhile, 5 days into their enlistment, BTS's old songs are spiking #1s on I-tunes around the world. First Spring Day, then Outro: Tear, No More Dream, and Attack On Bangtan. ARMY's gone back to the beginning to support 'Bangtan Sonyeondan'- and they're calling themselves 'Bell' for a joke. There's been a mock streaming battle this weekend, team 2Kool4Skool vs Team O, RU L8 2?
K-pop interest was already on a decline, and that's probably going to continue. But some critics were predicting that BTS's popularity will also decline- even after their return- so ARMY's in a "Oh yeah? We'll show YOU who's popular and who's not!" kind of mood. As one commenter put it very well: "BTS are enlisted, but ARMY isn't. It's time to show them that we got their backs while they're gone."

I'm not Korean and i'm no expert in Korea, military, or politics. BUT based on my personal opinion, i think bts could have gotten an exemption if they pushed for one or struck a deal with the government. but bts being bts never asked for an exemption and was always willing to serve. They are also extremely intelligent and KNOWS the implications of being exempted. even if they did get the exemption, they probably would have served anyways. One to shut up all haters, and two, to set a good example for everyone else. All eyes were and are on them and they know this. If they had taken the exemption, the world and the haters would never let it go.
Jin even mentioned he wanted to serve, but due to their sudden success and the Busan concert, he had to delay his enlistment and already got so much hate for that. The only reason they would want an exemption, is just to show that they are given the respect that they deserve for all the contributions they have made, but they would still enlist after getting it. I am extremely proud of the boys for taking the matter into their own hands and enlisting on their own terms and not waiting for the government to make up their mind. and to stop using them like puppets. They have contributed enough to the government and by enlisting they are getting rid of any "debt" the government will hold against them. They can be "free" after.
if enlisting in the military was truly mandatory, then yes of course BTS should serve and receive no exemption. BUT there are exemptions made. And when it's made to people that have contributed less....it is frustrating that we even need to convince anyone. Olympians and athletes, people have argued that their serving would ruin their careers as the serving years are their prime time. Which I agree, but these are also BTS's prime time years. If this was the argument, then wouldn't deferring their serving age to 30 (like BTS) solve that issue? And then there are the e-gamers. I myself am a gamer, so i am familiar with that world. Their average ages are quite young. At 25 you're already considered old. So why are they getting exempted? Truthfully, i think e-gamers would be better recruits in the military. With their skill sets, they can probably do really well operating drones and un-manned crafts and machinery. They have plenty of time to serve after their "prime time".
Regarding "prime time", i'm going to use JK as an example, he's not my bias, but i want to be as objective as possible. JK has had a very successful run as a soloist. In the short one month time of him releasing his solo album, he was able to achieve so much that most idols won't be able to in their lifetime. not to mention being able to work with big names like Usher, JT, Ed sheeren, Shawn Mendes, Andrew Watts, etc etc. He's gained so much global popularity with the new wave of the global general audience that hasn't paid attention to k-pop before. His impact is much more vast then these other Olympians, athletes', e-gamers. and yet, he has to give up that trajectory to go serve. In the short run, JK will suffer, and S.Korea can still benefit from the residual interest in kpop and k-culture. But when BTS returns and no longer "owe" anything to S.Korea, who knows what they have up their sleeves? Maybe they will leave behind k-pop and truly tap into the general categories. There is HYBE America now. There's always that possibility that BTS can leave korea and extend their careers overseas. Who will cry then? I'm purely thinking from a strategic/business perspective. BTS being as honorable as they are and wanting to promote integrity, will always have to drag korea along on their coattails. but my previous point would be the right play i believe.
BTS has won the hearts of millions. When they come back, their come back world tour will break records that will be very hard to break again for generations to come. True Armys just need to trust in BTS, trust that they know what they're doing and that they already have plans in place, believe that Army will stick around for their return, and do what we can now to keep supporting them in silence. Let the haters talk their shit, let them rant about how great their favs are. We just keep quiet and wait for the boys to come back. And when they do, we just blow everyone else out of the water, to the point that there is no doubt in anyone's minds who is the biggest artists in the world. That is what we should do. Start saving up, concert tickets will be expensive. 💪

Although I was furious when BTS didn’t get the exemption I think all of them enlisting is a better smarter option. They planned this out so well. All of them had an opportunity to debut their solo projects which became successful and more importantly they will fulfill their military service as South Korean men. Unlike those nepo children of the rich and powerful the BTS members are doing Korea proud. It also eliminates any hate and criticism in this area. Jin and J Hope have been doing so well in the military, although we don’t have a whole lot of news about Suga I am sure he is also doing well in his assignments. I am sure RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook will come through positively just like their older brothers. Even though they leave behind what they love to do most but it’s only temporary. Meanwhile, armies around the world are so fantastic in their show of support of BTS that their debut and older songs are charting! Thank you army! Please don’t be sad because we have so much to look forward to in the near future. Borahae 💜

After they did the Busan concert FOR FREE which did garner Busan being chosen to host, and then served, if they had served less than 18 months I personally don't think it would have mattered except to a very small minority. Just the fact that the 5 members have to endure two winters pisses me off, and three are in the area that is extra cold, I saw photos of soldiers being hazed marching shirtless in the winter. I'm terrified that for this one time, I can't tell the future to make sure they come back safe and alive...but this had to happen. As much as we love them, we have to remember that these men are still proud South Korean citizens and do right by their country. We all want the power to make certain they'll come back safe and sound, but we have to let them go for now. It's also a test for ARMY. If we can be decent people when our role models are with us, then it's up to us to see if we can still be those same decent souls when they're gone. We can still love ourselves and use BTS as a means to help others love themselves too. I love and miss them so much, but I'm so proud of the men they've grown into.

BTS was given way more leeway in how much to practice than other artists have been given at other companies. Certainly, they were expected to train in many areas and work hard, but if they hadn't wanted it, they would have quit and they wouldn't continue signing with HYBE. You can witness time and again that BTS have very high standards for themselves and push themselves further than they perhaps should, whether in training or during performances. If HYBE were a terrible company, they wouldn't provide medical attention when needed, etc. Again, IMO, I don't think HYBE has exploited BTS to an extent where they should be villainized. I’ve had the same experience in talking to Korean men. I couldn’t find one that genuinely wanted to go and they told me their friends and relatives felt the same. It’s in the country’s best interest to make military service the only good choice. Otherwise it’s longer in jail than the MS would be or dip out of the country, then you are looked down upon for dodging service. I wish they had a voluntary military like my country, but many of these smaller countries have conscription unfortunately. It’d be nice not to need it, but while they only have a ceasefire with the North that could end at any time and not a peace treaty, this will have to be a thing. I’m proud of them but I recognize that they are only doing this because they have to. We all need to pray for their safe return to civilian life and things don’t get hot with NK. 🙏🏻🕊️

I wanted them to get the exemption because they really deserve it more than those who get the exemption for winning a gold medal, BUT I feel if they had gotten the exemption the government would've held it over their heads to do this, do that, etc. Now they'll serve their time and be free to do what the want to do without owing the government anything.

    • @kshafer6220

That's a good point. The government was already trying to use them- Busan, for example. (Which failed, incidentally; Saudi Arabia will be hosting the EXPO in 2030.) I can easily see some kind of 'We exempted you, now you have to comply with all our requests' emerging out of that.
Now if it had been a matter of actually changing the guidelines so that BTS *and other groups* could earn exemption, that would be a bit different. But it's all moot now; and now the government is starting to talk about *extending* the enlistment time again, so that their soldiers serve *more* time. Because they still can't seem to come up with a way to resolve the fact that their population is declining. It's not long now until they'll need 101% of males to be enlisted to fill the required-active quota...and that's not a thing that can happen.

All we can hope is that they are protected from friendly fire. Then they wanted to use Jin and Hobi for their screw up on the boy scout jambordie, are you kidding me!!!!. I know BTS said they would go, but they should have been exempted. They have given so much for S. Korea. They have broken through the western market, European market, and everywhere in the world. Tourism is up, ask yourself why? They were given the Culturial Merit Awared and Diplomatic passports, they asked RM to be a Public Relations Ambassador for the Miinstry of National Defense. They have spoken at the UN, White House, what more should they have done, to be exempted. Even on Hiatus due to this military enlistment, they have brought in a lot of money. I really miss them, and this should not have occurred. Suga comes out in June because of the type of services he went in on.

No, they never asked, because it was just not an option was it?
If they would've gotten exemption, or would run away, or even asked for it, that would've haunted them for the rest of their lives. Because of conservative people, or other Kpop fans thinking it was not fair. Eventhough no other group has accomplished anything close to what BTS has done and brought for S Korea. (And still could do for their country through their music, status and range worldwide, which the government has not hesitated to use for their own gain multiple times.)
Telling yourself they want to serve is just fooling yourself. So, be proud all you want, but these guys (like the majority of all Korean men), don't want this mandatory service. They are just obligated and can't speak up about it because it would be held against them forever. So they undergo the whole thing without protest, not because they want to.

My exact thoughts about Taehyung's choice of placement. When I heard where he's going and when he said in their last weverse live that we shouldn't worry about him because he has a plan, I immediately thought that he decided if he already needs to go and play soldier for a while he might as well get full training for future works. But I think actually a lot of planning went into their enlistment just not many people look into it that deeply.
Suga is rightfully where he is because of his shoulder surgery, I don't question that at all. But. He's the main producer in their group. Namjoon can work during these months in a notebook if nothing else because he can write lyrics but Yoongi needs his music equipment to be productive and this way they can get a huge head start for when they all come back because after his workday ends he has full access to his home studio. He could produce a full album for them until 2025 so they can get back on track very quickly. Even if his social service placement wasn't guaranteed, I feel that some handshakes would have happened in the background to help a tiny bit with the situation and I also feel that not even the officials would have had any problem with it knowing the circumstances. As I said, his shoulder injury more than warrants his placement but that's the best thing that could have happened.
I think Jin and Hobi didn't have any special plans just went with the "we'll see how it goes" option but they are both natural leaders. Especially Jhope is used to direct a group of people to move with perfection so I understand how they ended up as instructors. And I'm guessing it was the military base's idea of help as well because this move made sure that they are always above the others in rank (except the actual officers who work there of course but they are somewhat colleagues now) so they are protected as much as they can be.
Namjoon speaks English well, he fulfilled all kinds of diplomatic roles in the past, well mannered, intelligent and eloquent. Hell, he was shaking hands with state presidents...I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up in that special unit that is kinda like a link between the Korean and US army? I don't know what the unit is called but I know it's a coveted position with huge number of people applying but very little are actually accepted.
And the maknae line... I already said why I think Taehyung chose what he did. Jimin and Jungkook going together is the perfect choice for both of them. Me and my friend were joking about how Jimin is there to keep Jungkook in check otherwise he would be jumping out of airplanes and swimming with crocodiles... 😂 On the other hand Jungkook can have his own set of problems, he's young, there will definitely be men there who are older than him and might not be that fond of idol stars or rich kids in general. I don't think it would turn physical but sometimes words can be even more hurtful. But with the two of them together they can keep each others up without problem. And Jimin needs somebody with him just as much. I think he's prone to depression, he himself said that if he starts having negative thoughts it's hard for him to find his way out of that loop. Depression and enlistment is never a good combination. So with Jungkook there they can have each others backs.
That is of course only my take on things but it seems logical. I just wish for them to come back quickly and healthy.

Looking at the length of your comment, you seem very knowledgeable about BTS boys. Honestly I didn’t read much of it, but being a Jimin fan, I scrolled down until JM started appearing. Question to you is, who diagnosed Jimin with DEPRESSION? “Prone to depression”? Are you a psychiatrist? yes JM has said he’s very private, he doesn’t like to be alone but he doesn’t like sharing his own problems with others, he’s clearly a workaholic and perfectionist. Neither Jimin nor anyone around him has said anything about JM having any psychological disorder so please quit throwing around words like depression so casually. Don’t misunderstand his kind nature as weakness. The reason why Jimin and JK enlisted together is still unknown except for two of them, I hope they’ll share with us someday, until then let’s not pretend to be experts.

Second: I'm not a psychiatrist but I'm a nurse of 32 years and my job is to notice the signs even if the patient doesn't say anything. Third: it's not even a guesswork with Jimin. You don't seem to know him as well as you think you do because apparently you are not aware that he himself said this. I was literally quoting him when I said when he starts thinking about negative things he can't get out of that loop. These were his exact words. And that is a form of depression, when your negative thoughts are ruling your life to the point where you can't get rid of them. It has nothing to do with his caring and private nature or what ever you brought up. Lastly: I didn't say they are together because of that. I only said that it's good for him that they are together. Jimin is a perfectionist as you said and military is freakin hard, nobody expects from the new recruits to be perfect on the first try but they do yell at you to do better as it is common in the army. And with a perfectionist as Jimin is, with him chewing himself up at every mistake he makes, I imagine that won't go down well. So yes, I'm glad that the two of them went together.

@@viktoriatoth5809 you’ve been a nurse for 32 years? that’s a long time but still doesn’t change the fact that you’re just a nurse, not a doctor. Depression is not a nursing diagnosis. You’re not qualified to diagnose JM with depression for something he has said 5 years ago. I didn’t read your full comment because I only care about Jimin. You didn’t mention him until towards the end. Your comment started with Taeyang and then started with Makhne line and started with Taeyang again. I’ve followed JM since day 1, I don’t claim to know everything about him. FYI, Depression, most commonly interferes with your daily life (work, study, sleep you name it), it decreases your ability to function normally. when was the last time you saw JM slacking off?? I’ll wait for your answer. I’m a critical care nurse myself, not as old as you but I know my limits. I deal with lots of mental health patients who gets admitted with medical issues. I don’t even dare to say the word unless it’s clearly listed in their past medical history. Military is “freaking hard”? I don’t think any of the members were concerned about military being hard. They were sad about putting their career on hold for almost 2 years. I’m a huge JM fan and i love him with all my heart, I’m sad because I won’t see him for a long time. But trust me, I’m not even bit worried about him not being able to do basic military stuff. “Chewing himself for every mistake he makes”? What mistake are you talking about? Let me remind you, Before BTS, Jimin has spend 8 years of his life training various martial arts which includes Kendo, Taekwondo, he has black belt in both. He exercises everyday and he loves running, he’s a trained contemporary dancer. JM has been facing challenges head-on since he was a teenager. What else is required? Commitment to the mission? Organization skill? Team work? I can confidently say that JM and JK are among the best in their group. Leave JM alone if you don’t know much about him.

Rm, Jimin, V and Jungkook said that each of them did a lot of content that going to be released during their military service, so that should occupy us and lessen the feeling of loss…like we just got Jungkook’s collaboration with Usher Music Video, Jimin and Jungkook did something like a travel variety show, think RM and V each will have a travel
Vlog or something because they did some traveling on their personal time. IU just said she collaborated with V on a song for her comeback…I’m hoping maybe Suga and Jhope collaborated with her, too. There’s hints that Jimin did some dance collaboration. Also hints of new albums from RM, V, Jimin… This doesn’t make the sense of emptiness less, but it helps… for me, since BTS who made Korea lots of money and helped put Korea on global forefront wasn’t exempt, then athletes, classic musicians and other groups shouldn’t be exempt either. Plus, women shouldn’t be exempt, they should do community service or public service-relations work for up to 2 years.

Well I never thought I would have a visceral response to someone that doesn’t even know I exist going into the SK military but I did. Such a knot in my stomach. I really missed those guys, especially Jungkook who was the king of “lives”. He was so engaging that you felt like you were hanging out with him. The military experience is going to add another dimension to their individual characters. It is really fascinating to think that V is going to train for special ops. Namjoon being fluent in English is probably going to be an interpreter. It seems like Yoongi got a really good deal with social services in the military because of his shoulder. It is rumored that he will work 9-5 with weekends and holidays off. I hope they stay healthy and I’m looking forward to any content that they have prepared for us prior to enlisting knowing that they will all be back soon. I’d also like to say that I really enjoy your content.

I was sad for a day after each enlistment and then I picked myself up, dusted myself off and got down to the business of streaming. That’s what we can do for them now, make sure to keep them in the spotlight and relevant by keeping them on the charts. Then when they get out, it’ll be as if they never left and they can pick up right where they left off again, but as mentally, emotionally and physically stronger versions of themselves. As for how they’re doing now, as competitive as all of them are, there’s zero doubt in my mind that they will all excel in each of their positions.

The last four ((RM, V, Jimin and JK), enlisting at the same time before end of 2023 was strategic. It had to.be done that way for s world concert series of OT7 to happen in 2025 as promised to Armys, the fans (me included :). With a lot of preparations needed, the last discharge date of June 2025 will just be about right for a concert kick off of say, October of the same year. I thought as I read somewhere social service is around 21 months. In such case, Suga will come out of the military around June too, similar to the last BTS members to enlist. Looking forward to Jin's return and his much-awaited solo projects, Hobi's dance documentary, and hopefully another album (a min perhaps) from Namjoon even while on military training. I never had the sense of their excitement about enlisting, quite the opposite. However, that aside, they were entitled to, and should have been offered an exemption. Some apprehension on RM's part could also be because he has to think of the group as a whole and the well-being of each member and worry about what they are experiencing in the military and how that will affect them. He also has to be forward-thinking to 2025 and what that might look like, despite maybe having his own personal concerns about joining the military and doing it without the other members there.

Yes, BTS & fans will realize how short the service is in hindsight 5, 10, 25 years from now. What I've been saying for a few years now is, let's remember, that the BTS band concept is fictional military. So by going to actual conscription, BTS might possibly become the only music act/band in global history that will be both fictional & non-fictional military. They will become part of 2 armies, not just 1 as before, of which that itself is also both fictional & non-fictional army. And now they will actually be able to handle real weapons, military-grade nonetheless, & also use real bulletproof armor & bombs/grenades. All of these military nomenclature & wordings that have been used for BTS & ARMY for 10 years are now actually becoming real stuff. That even includes "muster". I realize that the exemption thing had been dangled like a carrot in front of their faces, but I think going to military duties was the best real path for them. They had already said years ago that they will serve. Imagine a music band that revolves around military themes yet not actually going to real military. In a nation where there is conscription, it could actually be embarrassing to be an entertainment act that is pretend military but then not going to real military. Had BTS got exempted, that could possibly get them mocked & belittled by haters & critics for the rest of their lives, even if others have gotten previously exempted over the years, because BTS is a military concept. We have already surmised that BTS was just one of those things that was destined to be, as many fans have said, even J-Hope said something to that effect. So when Bang PD invented this band to have a military concept, I think that also additionally sealed their destiny & fate to also become real military. That could be a reason why they did not get exempted, it was not part of their destiny. BTS have already gone through many trials & tribulations, obstacles & rites of passage. Going to military should just be another rite of passage. And the most important thing is that them going to military should not be considered a bump in the road in their careers. It should actually be considered honorable, esteemed, proud & noble to go. Because let's face it folks, in the grander scheme of things, it is not all fun, games & music. That SK military is there for a reason. Without it, South Korea probably would not have existed & thus subsequently, no KPop industry & no BTS in existence. If you want to blame anybody for that, then blame Karl Marx, Lenin & Stalin. Whatever the case, after their service is over, BTS will finally come full circle back to their military concept & military band name by actually becoming real soldiers. Maybe one of them might even train a bit in reconnaissance (scout), who knows. BTS have already gone beyond music by having hundreds of charities globally in their name/proxy, having saved peoples lives through the messages in their songs, & now they can actually help defend their nation for real. All of that makes BTS & ARMY richer in substance & will prove a positive effect on their legacy for the history books. They will all be back before we know it, just as I said in my first sentence above. Big Time Soldiers 2025.

You do know that BTS never asked not to go and never asked for the extension either. That extension was due to the Kpop Agencies not BTS and Not HYBE/BigHit. Those Kpop agencies didn't even invite BTS or their company to the discussions. However those disgusting Kpop companies used BTS as the example without their premission why KPOP artist should be exempt. Oh dear then what happened was the Government did change the law extending the age to 30year rather than 28 but the kpop artist needed to hold the Cultural Merit Award. Yeah right so the only Kpop artist's that hold that Cultural Merit Award are all 7 members of BTS who didn't even ask for the extension. So the new law called nicknamed The BTS Law.
The Kpop Agencies were mad about it and petitioned the Government to change the law back citing it was too hard and unrealistic. This is because they know that no other Kpop artist is ever going to be award the Cultural Merit Award.
Now no one can point fingers at BTS and say they 'Got out of military service'.

I feel that BTS is to be congratulated most for what they did NOT do in regards to mandatory MS. First, they did not ask for the law to be changed to exempt KPOP artists, as you pointed out. They decided on their own that they would serve. Second, they do not seem to have employed brokers to get them alternative service as some KPOP idols have done. (Two who were convicted this spring for trying to evade MS by claiming false medical conditions both used brokers.) Third, BTS/Hybe has not used their influence to get the members easy posts. Jin, Jimin and Jungkook are based on the frontline, J Hope is in the nothern part of Korea, during a time when the possibility of war involving the two Koreas has increased dramatically.
