How the World Scout Jamboree Turned into a Jambo DUMP

  • The 2023 World Scout Jamboree ended as a $250 million dollar disaster for South Korea, but the drama and finger pointing has only begun. Why did this idyllic camping trip for 43,000 scouts take such a morbid turn? Were there signs that this could happen or was mother nature the culprit? Moreover, must we finally admit that these events have been hijacked by political cartels who raid the budget instead of delivering on promises?

For sure Busan wont be able to get the World Expo2030 after this, the reputation that was partly built up by BTS of Korea was completely ruined.

    • @rinasilent8533
      @rinasilent8533 ปีที่แล้ว +22

It occurred because the government didn’t value enough BTS . It made the guys perform free of charge to attract the global attention to the country as a potential place for expo, and at the same time didn’t find enough reasons to exempt them. Boomerang😊

My daughter was part of the UK contingent at the jamboree. The main reason she went was to meet people from all over the world but unfortunately she spent almost the whole three weeks in Seoul with the same few people she travelled there with. Whilst there were some great experiences these did not make up for what was supposed to happen and we are hugely disappointed for her. We paid thousands of pounds for her to visit shopping malls and eat in fast food restaurants.

Commenting from Lisbon, we've just hosted the World Youth Day 2023, where 1.5 million youngsters, plus their chaperones, took over Lisbon from August 1st to the 6th. (during a heatwave, where temperatures reached 40ºC + )
Millions were spent. A special stage was built, zones were requalified, Airbnbs, hotels, motels, Youth hostels, every spare room in (volunteering) host family houses was made available to accommodate those who attended.
Thousands of local volunteers gave up a week of there summer holidays to help guide and care of our visitors.
Local businesses offered reduced price menus, discount codes to enter our tourist attractions were issued etc, etc, etc...
    Were the locals inconvenienced, yes!
Did we complain, no (not until it ended).
Why, because we're proud of being recognised as great hosts, proud of our country, proud of what we have to offer. Proud of being known as a country that can organise such big events.
Politics aside, at least until it ended, (no-one likes to go to a dinner party only to witness the hosts bickering or airing dirty laundry at the dinner table in front of their guests).
... And guess where the Pope announced the next World Youth Day (2027) event will be held ... Seoul.
Good luck, you have big shoes fill after we put on such a great event!!! 👏🏻👍🏻😜

This event should have been treated and designed with the same amount of gravity, planning, and implementation as The Olympics was. Hotel accommodations, dorm accommodations, catered meals, the event held in Seoul, individual events in stadiums, arenas, or on available campus sites, indoor areas with available AC, restaurant vouchers, food vendors, merchandise and souvenir booths, hotel and dorm shuttle services and taxi services, medic tents and ambulances available, at least 2000 portable toilets throughout the event areas that would be routinely cleaned.. these are just a few things that were coming to mind while watching this video.
And that's not even including money to be spent on the actual Jamboree.
I'm glad you're back!! I hope you're able to talk openly with more freedom now that you're back home 😉 And I hope your parents are doing well 🙏🙏🙏

Thank you for helping us to understand what happened. I was waiting for this video because I know you would do a good job investigating this disaster. I love Korea and Kpop and honestly, I was angry that a few people that didn’t do their job tarnished S. Korea’s image this way. Kpop and their artists usually are viewed as second class artists, not respected as classical music artists but then, when these politicians need to save face, then they call Kpop artists to save the day. That was so wrong! These politicians should’ve called all classical music artists that received exemptions from the military enlistment for years to do the show for these kids instead of kpop artists that don’t receive these privileges. I always thought that Kpop artists deserve exemptions from military enlistment. Of course not every group but groups or artists recognized globally, they deserved to be exempted from military enlistment. To mention a few; Rain, Big Bang, Super Junior and BTS, these Kpop artists should’ve been exempted because they contributed to bring Kpop to the world. I hope that in the future, Kpop artists are recognized as artists that bring honor to S. Korea as well as any classical music artists.

  • @MsMrReason

It sounded disorganised on all aspects . I took 5 young adults from the UK to Seoul 5 years ago and I just left them to it and jumped ship as even though I organised everything absolutely no one appeared to have any maturity and they were like toddlers. So now I go it alone. When I was in Seoul in July this year - someone in a Korean Travel Group on Facebook ( only time I use it when in SK ) posted they were taking 43 kids (not young adults ) to Seoul for the Jamboree and they were enquiring about sightseeing , things to do, the weather , where to eat, transport etc. To me it seemed like they were under prepared before they left the UK. I remember saying what if the weather is like last year and how are you are going to cope if it rains for days or is just blistering hot and they really had no idea of a contigency plan for anything . I was scared for them and seems I had ever right to be skeptical. I thought the Scout Leaders assumed a great deal would be done for them by the organisers - so they were almost acting like the Scouts and there was no one adulting beforehand.

Great video! Only thing is, each scout paid about $6,100 for the jamboree (Fees include air and ground transportation, the Jamboree fee, pre-tour, insurance, and a Jamboree “kit” of patches, neckerchiefs and other contingent memorabilia), so the initial jamboree budget wasn’t completely from Korean tax dollars, right? It was only after the jamboree was cancelled due to the typhoon that the government had to provide for emergency lodging & services, alternative activities. Even though it started as a Fyre Festival type disaster, seems like many of the scouts ended up having a great time, going to soccer games, concerts, tourist sites, etc

I saw so many people get upset at the Fyre Festival comparisons saying it wasn’t that bad. I am now convinced that it is because the US did not get the full extent of what happened. I now understand why the Jamboree was compared to the Fyre Festival. American parents paid over $3000 to send their children to this Jamboree. I would argue that their living and sanitary conditions were worse than the Fyre Festival. I do wonder if this experience will deter parents from allowing their children from participating moving forward.

These kids travelled across the world, because they believed in the scouts' movement and the promises they had made at an early age about helping people and to never let anyone down. They were let down themselves, in an ugly way, by grownups who thought of their own interests and didn't check the situation they were going to be confronted with in this place. The fact of how well they did, how they survived and didn't give up should make each of the countries involved proud of these wonderful and brave young people.

When I first heard of this situation , I immediately thought of the crappy planning for the BTS concert on the beach There was poor planning & underestimated public concerns there as well as in Itewon. They have already lost that bid for 2030. Three strikes, you are out! I hate to see that but it is clear that the S. Korean government officials are not ready for such an influx of people. I do believe in following the money whether in the US or SK. The damn nerve of the President suggesting BTS entertain these kids when the kids didn’t have the necessities. Like food, cleanliness and a place to cool off knowing there was a heat wave. These kids are not stupid and neither is BTS. Like, oh let's unhook our IVs and go to a concert! If it quacks like a duck, it’s a duck and there are a lot of “ducks” wh😂o worked on this project on the take and should be held accountable. Korea is a beautiful country and I hope the kids were able to salvage their trip. No doubt the participants certainly learned something……for sure. So glad to hear from you again…

@Sean - You said it wasn't President Yoon's fault or responsibility, but it was. Yoon was the one that disbanded the Ministry for Women & Family that was supposedto organize the event. Yoon was and is responsible. Such a disgrace. If he eliminated the Ministry Yoon should have made sure all of their projects and contractual agreements had qualified teams to take over the responsibilities and not let corrupt politicians threaten the safety and lives of the attendees.
Also, the Korean media spent a lot of time talking about the Jamboree's impact on higher income countries like the U.S. abd Britain. What about scouts from less wealthy countries? The amount of money they had to put in to attend the Jamboree was probably more of a financial hit then the wealthier scouts. I'm so upset that they came all the way to Seoul for such a horrible, disappointing experience.

Yay, I knew you would come through on this story. I was watching it unfold and knew we needed a thorough breakdown from you afterwards! 💜 So firstly, I want to say I don't get the whole tent thing. Honestly, if I'm going to a foreign country, esp for the first time, I want to be in a hotel with good accommodations, okay? Sorry not sorry I'm a city girl. Secondly, the WIFM for any worker involved, esp govt officials, is keeping your job and not getting fired! Is there no accountability? I would expect some top level govt officials to be held accountable for this, although I get what you're saying about the decision to do this event came from the previous administration. Thirdly, what I have noticed since hearing about some Korean tragedies in recent years (since the ferry disaster), it seems like it's maybe issues with infrastructure not being at the level it needs to be at to handle these things that take place. Like all countries have their strengths and weaknesses, and obviously here in the US, we have plenty of our own weaknesses in public safety sector like gun violence, etc. And Korea is a relatively young democracy so is the general infrastructure a contributing factor? Maybe. Anyway, I look at it on a macro level like that. Hopefully, no large corruption is involved here as that would be so disappointing when the safety of children was involved. Thanks Sean for this video!

Thank you for the thourough investigation and your clear words. My daughter was part of the German kontingent.
You‘re right about the meaning of the Jamboree (and it‘s ceremonies) for the scouts on their way to adulthood, Especially after the pandemic related restrictions in their teen years.
Even the things that seem to be easy to oranize were messy. A huge part of scouts (like my daughter’s unit) were bound to miss the closing ceremony standing outside, waiting 2 hours outside before being seated! Or wait until all scouts were seated. It was very visible for the organizers (and in the videos) because there were a lot of groups still led to their seats when the Scout Promise that is supposed to be sworn together and the handing over of the flag was done and the farewell speech was held. At least it could habe been broudcasted for the waiting..And that in favour for a K-Pop-concert? ??? The concert is referred to as compensation in a lot of channels - a k-pop concert with surprise artists was supposed to take place on the Cultural Exchange Day at the Jamboree anyways. The opening ceremony couldn’t be artended by all, since there was not enough space…..
Just heartbreaking that the organizers destroyed the once in s lifetime event of feeling the strong community of the Jamboree-participants during their ceremonies.
That’s why parents/families made sacrifices to have their kid participating.
I‘m growing an allergie to K-Pop

I'm seeing why the US and UK dropped out of the jamboree event. My suspicions were correct-this had money grab written all over it!! The other countries that participated should come up with ways to get their money back as well.

    • @eileencritchley4630
      @eileencritchley4630 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Not exemption law it's a extension law eg instead of having to sign up for military service by the age of 28years the exemption is now 30years of age but only BTS members qualify as they are the only Kpop artists who hold the Cultural Merit Award. However they didn't ask for and haven't used it.

Hi Sean, I was wondering what you think about the Fifty Fifty case just featured on SBS' Unsolved Mysteries. There's similar elements of accounting shenanigans, mediaplay, and now there's backlash from ppl interpreting the show was shading BTS. Public opinion seems divided between int'l fans (supportive of the girls) and the Korean public and I'm wondering why.

10k more showed up than planned. Plus a major heat wave and typhoon. Recipe for disaster. The 1000 buses with ac helped. Also moving all to other housing. It would have been a lot worse if these disaster measures were not taken.

😮 Im just like WOW! Im amazed at the leaders of the Boy Scouts being so lax. Its not like the Boy Scouts are newbies at putting on a Jubilee 🤦‍♀️ The Korean Government might be newbies when it comes to Scouting but THE SCOUTING association knows better. Moreover, who was in charge of coordinating between the SCOUTS and providing facilities?
AS a daughter of a LONG LONG line of family scouters, I place blame on the SCOUTING association. I know how Scouting works, or should work, ie. My Son has his Eagle. And I was a Cub Master for a little while.
The Government or the facilities providing services might have botched things, but the Scouting Association has the responsibility of following through and making sure the amount of toilets are provided, or the food is not expired, the TOP Scout Leaders of the Jubilee failed to be Leaders.
    This is just..... WOW 😮

I have missed you so much Sean, but I definitely understand the responsibility of taking care of your parents in their golden years and I applaud you for being such a great son.
I don’t have much else to comment since there have been a lot of comments already that have said it for me, I will say that when I heard about this the Busan Expo did come to mind, and yet again let’s use BTS to save face, even thought we don’t think they are worth a military exemption, it was kind of a slap in the face to BTS to even be asked to do this, so glad the did not take part in this, but nice they did send photo cards for the kids, I’m glad that in the end they did have a bit of fun and there wasn’t any one severely hurt.
I 2nd the comment about you never leaving us Sean. Hope all is well with you and your family. Take care. Borahae💜

Making me think of the initial government plan to have BTS perform free on a Korean beach with no amenities and inadequate access. This is crazy. Many years ago my brother went to an international Boy Scout jamboree. It was in Valley Forge. It was fun for the scouts exchange cultural crafts and get to mingle. Sorry to hear this story of this disaster. Thanks to tell the story
