The new 13" base MacBook Pro is extremely underrated compared to what Apple's spec sheet shows!
We cracked the bottom case open and took a look at what's different between these two models. We compared the speakers, SSD speed and performance to see if the $1799 model is worth the extra cash!

I have been trying to get some info on that matter since quite some time and couldn't find any comprehensive report, just random opinions with no foundation. I am struggling between buying the 13 inch MBP 2019 with 256gb SSD or 16gb of ram.

@@pestibenji 2019 1.4 is definately better than 2018 2,3. The 2019 model is 4 cores and has higher boost speed, so almost twice as fast. Also a more reliable keyboard.
I don't know with everyone, but I find the audio quality difference significant.

The 1799 MacBook has the following reasons for the extra $300
1) More ports (4 ports vs 2 on the other model)
2) Faster SSD (Both read and write speeds)
3) Two fans instead of 1 in the other
4) Better speakers with backfiring subwoofer set up.
5) 5 to 9% performance boost.
I think it is equally worth the consideration.
Note, the base model battery lasts an additional 2 hours. Also, It has negligibly larger 58.2 watt-hour battery 🔋when compared to 58.0 on the higher end.
Need some help here, I have a budget of $2000 and both costs the same, I wanna know which one will perform better, the 2019 13inches 1.7ghz i7 with 16gb ram and the 2019 2.4ghz i5 with 16 GB ram.

For audio recording SSD speed is a huge thing. Take that in mind. Please don't make reviews based only on videogames and video editing. Not everyone is a youtuber. Creative work is more than that. Great vídeo
Audio recording? Are you sure you need blazing fast ssd? I record 24 audio track live into my sata hdd without any dropout. Are recording to 384khz 48 bit???
Add an external drive ? You could easily get a much faster 500 gb drive for much less.

Which one? The 1299 or the 1799
I went for 1799 before seeing this video. I’ll be using it to video edit but can only upgrade ram through Apple but couldn’t get monthly payments through them. Hopefully spec shall be fine :)
$1800 one sounds more full and not as tinny as the cheaper one.

This was a very informative video. One of my favorite parts is you don't sound like a robot with your delivery. It's a strange trend that many TH-camrs have. Wow, impressive performance. I’m still inclined to pay the $300 price difference though for the ability to charge on either side and four ports, slightly better speakers, and faster SSD performance.
I agree with you. 400 isn’t that much in comparison with the overall cost and is still worth the upgrade.
Never cheap out on a MBP purchase. I have a maxed-out early-2015 13" that's still going strong and I've never had to regret living with lower perf for 4 years just to save pennies per day.
would love to see the difference in performance when being used for programming and if it'd be better to get the base model with upgraded 16gb of RAM over the $1799 model for programming
Bought the base model with 8gb. Xcode and ios simulators are pretty fast in my opinion. But it would probably be different for you and the IDE you're using for programming.
I plan to make my purchase this week on one of the 13” MacBook pros. And I’ll be making my decision right after this video LOL been watching all your comparisons haha

Jory and Mitch That’s crazy.. if you care enough about computer speakers to drop another $500 you should either buy headphones or invest in a sound system. If you don’t care enough to spend $500 then clearly you’re okay with lower quality audio. I really don’t see how anyone can justify upgrading to the $1799 model largely based on audio quality.
etagged it’s about the size. Otherwise u can carry a much cheaper desktop, with a nice headphone with a much cheaper total price. I don’t even wanna carry a dongle.
It still is nice to have some decent sounding speakers if you don’t always want to use headphones and do simple things.
If I just had watch this review earlier I would get a better deal with saving almost 200$.
I already ordered the 1799 MacBook pro (witch is know 1699, because of student discounts) 256gb with adding the 16gb ram cost about 1994,
But if I order the 1299 MacBook pro with updating the ram up to 16gb and also 512gb of storage it will only charge me about 1800 (with tax)
I think you should mention the fact that the base model does not support full speed thunderbolt on both USB c ports

Sorry that is really bad advice; as a college student, you could do your coding on a raspberry pi, you don't need any fancy laptops. If you have money to burn and really wanted a brand new MacBook Pro, then the base model is all you need.

I'm a professional software engineer, over 20 years in the business. I'm quite happy with my 2015 Macbook Pro, with 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD.
Though I do keep most of my work on an external 500GB SSD. Having a dozen projects that are several gigabytes each of data and code eats up a lot of disk space.
Of course the gpu test were almost the same. you should’ve tested both with the black magic egpu and also focus more in the cpu since is the only main difference
The sound quality difference might then be the decision factor
I would buy the base line Model with 512GB and 16GB RAM

The peak performance difference at around 300-400mghertz is correct on the specs as they are both 3.9ghz and 4.1ghz respectfully at maxed out speeds. The 1ghz difference is at base speeds (not to be confused when they’re being pushed to full power).
I love my 2019 $1300 Model there’s so many things you can buy these Days for performance it’s crazy! Apple sells a gpu add like $599 . It’s a lot but better then $1500 more

How much performance is increased by going from 8GB of ram to 16GB?
RAM, (Random Access Memory) is used for apps running in the background, so 8 is only for watching videos and web browsing or watching Netflix. Anything else I suggest going for 16.
IMHO someone said that I would need 16 after I told them what I would do on it.

do you think 8gb is enough to play the sims 4 while i have about 10 tabs open on chrome and spotify in the background? sometimes i don’t have all of that open sometimes i have just tons more tabs of chrome open that i don’t wanna close lol. i could get the 13“ base new from bestbuy for 1400$ or the 15“ base model open box satisfactory for 1900$ however i’m a microbio student who might be double majoring in computer science and i don’t want my laptop slowing down/lagging in the next 3 years at least.

I need your opinion, as I have purchased a 13" 8GB RAM, 256GB storage with 2.4GHz quad core model.
I installed Davinci resolve 15 and used it for an hour or so. I observed some serious heating issue at the back of laptop with a pungent smell.
Please clarify that, whether I am pushing the specification beyond limits or laptop must be looked into.

Great video! I've love to know how much SSD performance improves in the base model when you opt for 512GB, 1TB etc... It's still fast by most standards but it's disappointing to see something that's been compromised for the sake of affordability! The sound is noticeably tinnier in the entry level model but that's not exactly a deal-breaker for me as I'd expect it still to be better than most laptops. It would be interesting to compare eGPU performance between the two machines and carry out more detailed real-world battery drain tests when watching video, browsing the web or gaming/editing.
Awesome review (as always). The question I still have is: would a 16GB upgrade on the 1499MBP (256GB upgrade of the smallest one) make up for any of those few % performance advantages of the 1799MBP?

Why is there a difference between the prices in the USA and in Europe ? The cheaper in USA is 1299$ ( 1158€ ) but in France its 1500€

Yes those speakers sound different. The cheaper one sounds a bit tinny, tough not so tinny that I’d pay $300 more to avoid it

I was waiting for a youtube video with this comparison. Before watching it I thought it was totally not worth it the upgrade to the 1799 dollars but now mmmm I don't know, I think it might be. 128 SSD should not even be released in a pro segment so for me that is a NO. Then apple decide to be smart and charge 200 extra dollars for the 256 GB SSD version lol, this is a joke in 2019. So starting from 1499 price point we have the following differences between the 2 versions:
1 - Better CPU (I know it is not much better but it still counts)
2 - 4 Thunderbolts ports vs 2
3 - Better sound quality (very easy to notice the speakers has better sound quality on the 1799 version)
4 - Better thermal management (2 fans vs only 1 fan in a such a small form factor)
5 - Better Integrated GPU.
6 - The battery differences I don't know but I would not be surprised if it is because of downgrade as far as quality.
All that for 300 bucks. Mmmmmm I'm not sure it does not look too bad at all. I can see apple really knows how to differentiate their product line.
I bought the $1799 version and my return policy ended about 2 days before the new entry level MBPs came out. If I could do it again, I'd probably do the entry level with 256gb SSD and 16gb RAM and save the extra 100

I use the base model, its amazing. Literally never sluggish, also the reason the SSD was faster is because of the array method they use; unlike a regular ssd, the 128GB model has 2 64GB ssds configured in ... something like a raid 0 I think, so the 256GB models have 4 64GB ssds configured like that, making it a lot faster

I don't know wether I should keep it plugged while using it and then do one full discharge once every two weeks, or just let it discharge and recharge when needed. I’m getting a 13” MBP at work. I have a $1800 budget (no tax). I work in an online database running reports and I work in excel files that can be 500+ rows by 20 columns. Based on this video I’m guessing 1.4 quad, 256, 16 gig over 2.4, 256 8 gig. Thoughts?

it is surprising no one is mentioning about air vents that $1799 model has it. they are bit annoying while holding your laptop in hands(because of sharp edges). $1299 mode doesn't have those vents.
Hey Max, I got a 1TB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe PCIe SSD along with an enclosure with costed me a total of £170 on Prime deal. I think this is a much better value proposition in terms of performance and price (253% cheaper and 7 times faster) when compared to what Apple offers. I do watch a lot of in-depth comparison/tech videos and can certainly say that you are the best and one of the only two that I have subscribed. Love your videos! Keep sharing and helping tons of people with their purchase decisions!

Wow, perfect comparison! I've been saving up since July 2019 and now I'm gonna get the base model as it is definitely worth it. I'm a filmmaker and photographer and these tests really show a real world use and comparison. Still deciding between 8GB or 16GB though. I'm planning on shooting/editing 4K BUT I think I can get along with 8GB of RAM. I don't do cinema-level color grading or 3D effects. Just gonna keep the extra money for the dongle life XD

I see how the 1800 Mac seems “better” overall, but the 1300 Mac is obviously the smarter option. However, I don’t really mind paying extra bc discounts got me covered. I’m just confused because if I don’t need the more expensive one then it’s pointless to get it.

$1299 MBP costs €1499 in Europe which is $1654... Pimping it up to 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD gets the price to €1989 which is $2194. Insane...
I, personally, can tell a HUGE difference between the two speakers. It's unfortunate that they are this different. I was really debating the base option, but after hearing those speakers, to me, it's a night and day difference.

I’m a student, but not a college student so I don’t get the discount. :( I have to save up $1699. (16GB RAM and 256GB storage entry level). EDIT: I am getting 128 because I’m getting a Microsoft Office 365 with 1TB of storage. So I think I’ll be good.
