Creating 3D Floor Plans in SketchUp Part 1 - The SketchUp Essentials #22

In this week’s SketchUp tutorial, we’re going to talk about creating floor plans in SketchUp
There are several different ways you can go about this, depending on if you’re creating a new floor plan, or if you have and existing floor plan image that you’re bringing into SketchUp in order to model it in 3D.
Creating a floor plan from scratch in SketchUp is pretty easy - you can start off by drawing the outline of your space in 2D, then you can use rectangles to rough out your spaces.
Once you have your spaces roughed out, you can go in with the offset tool and create your walls. You can do that by activating the tool, then clicking in a space, then entering the thickness you’d like to offset your space. In this case, I’m going to assume my walls are 6” thick.
Once you’ve roughed in all your walls, you can go in, do a little cleanup to make sure your walls are continuous faces, and then use push/pull to extrude your walls into 3d.
The tricky part is how to include your doors. There’s a couple ways you can do this, and I’ll run through the pros/cons of each.
The first is to just rough out your door openings before you extrude your walls. This has the benefit of making it so your doors are in the right place before you extrude. However, if you want actual door openings, you’ll have to come in, model the tops of the doors, and deal with SketchUp autohealing over and over again.
You can also extrude your walls, then add your doors. This is a much easier way to do this, because you aren’t dealing with the healing, but you’ll have to go in and add all your door locations after the fact. This can be handled fairly easily with guides. When I did this, it seemed much easier than doing it the other way.
Once you draw your doors on your walls, you can use the push/pull tool to push them until they hit the other side of the wall, where SketchUp will automatically delete the faces. Remember that if you do this once, you can double click every time afterword to repeat the tool’s last action.
That’s where I’m going to end this video. In part 2, we’re going to talk about workflow if you have an image that you’d like to import and use as a floor plan.

Before trying SketchUp, I used LiveHome 3D and my older brother who is an engineer told me about "Google SketchUp" and how architects/engineers use it and so I wanted to try it out and I realized how much better it is for complex designs! Like seeing how you changed the size of doors and windows, I've tried to change the sizes of windows and doors in LiveHome 3D and they wouldn't change how I wanted them to! Seeing how you can do that in SketchUp just by typing in dimentions is actually awesome!

@5:54 You can draw the door headers without it creating a new face by push pulling a rectangle on top of the wall, but it creates geometry which is kinda annoying to clean up. I think adding components that cut the face is a more efficient way...

Hi! Love your videos! A few questions! Is there a way to edit wall lengths after it is already drawn? i.e. you make an entire floor plan and after the fact you realize you had one of the dimensions of a room or wall incorrect. Can you adjust it, or do you have to start all over? Surely you can adjust....? Also same question for windows and doors. Once window/door is placed/created can you drag the cut out door/window along a wall to adjust placement?
How would you dimension the door position i.e distance from the nearest wall?

Do you group each section like floors and walls etc,right away? I was thought to group floors right away, then exterior walls then interior walls etc etc, having a hard time with it when I come to moving walls in my model or even roofs.

Hi Fares - if I understand your question correctly, you want to scale your object in one direction without distorting it, right? To do that, activate the scale tool, then click and drag one of the edge grips while holding the shift key. The shift key will toggle uniform scaling mode as long as it's held down, allowing you to scale uniformly. Did this answer your question? Thanks for watching!

Is it possible to do this or import floor plans on sketchup free or is this pro only?
You can create them - you can't import an image and trace on top of it in the online version that I'm aware of
when i first offset i cant put in the size of the the wall. fuck this how much should i pay for someone to make my floor plans?

Do you mean can I create an elevation view with that plan? You can by creating a section plan and setting up an elevation camera angle. Does that make sense?

Interesting - I like the idea behind this of modeling from the inside of wall dimensions and then offsetting out - I'm not sure exactly how well it works if you're starting to model from the exterior dimensions, but I still like it as a strategy - thanks!
TheSketchUpEssentials it's about tape used as a reference for making a floor plan, it doesn't matter even if the dimensions r from outside or inside, it will work

Hi Willem - I like that model - it really gets the haunted house feel, especially on the back side where the windows aren't so shiny. That's in Lumion, right? I would bet you could probably get some pretty cool results by changing the environment and fog settings to get a darker evening type scene, though I've never really used Lumion myself. It is a old Lumion version Justin. Very limited. The I deer is to change the model further to make it look older. Especially the windows.

I can't cover every single basic of using SketchUp in every single tutorial. If you're as far behind as you say, you should probably search for a "SketchUp beginner tutorial," not a video about creating plans from a CAD file. I have several on my channel (th-cam.com/play/PLEQT0qjXe6zgmMMP6ZzoUDG_fdjcRmCQE.html), but you can't just jump into a more complex topic and then complain that the video is about the topic advertised rather than being a very basic beginner tutorial.
