Great video Justin. I have immersed myself into this program for 3 days to learn everything in creating a floor plan. Unfortunately it is too much architectural orientated, and not enough marketing orientated. I need to produce a product that is very good, without spending a lot of time on it. Sketchup can deliver superb results, but it takes way too much time to do it. Believe me - I have drilled down to the core of what this does and how it works. Nevertheless, I must compliment you on your videos. So very well done! And your voice is like a fine bourbon. Smooth, rich, and mellow. Never get tired of listening to you. Your skills are so ideally suited to making videos. Nobody can come close to you in that regard. Keep up the good work!

I am confused on how I only select the floor plan part not the whole image with the white bg. When you where measuring the exploded size at 3:10 the whole image is highlighted, but at 3:28 you said it is going to make it a face, which only has the floor plan part of the image highlighted. That is the part that I am confused with, how did you go from the whole image highlighted to just the floor plan highlighted? please help! (also I can't explode the image after I already resized it).
I used this method too but I prefer to make a group with the image and lock it so I can't delete it mistakenly, and then draw on top of it by turning the transparency on and off when it's necessary.;),but thanks for sharing your knowledge like usual, your videos are really useful

Hello, I've watched this video over and over and I'm still lost. At 1:34 you explode the image. The entire image has been exploded, including all the areas outside the walls. But at 3:29 suddenly just the area INSIDE the walls appear to have been exploded. You never say how you did that. How does Sketchup know to select just areas inside the walls? I wish you explain that. There are other comments below asking the same thing. Again, when I right click on my image and select Explode, the ENTIRE image becomes selected. It doesn't matter where in the image I do this. The entire image becomes exploded. I am using Sketchup free version (on web).
Thanks so much for the content, I did imported an image (jpg) and started drawing rectangle over it to define the floor of the room but when I extruded it, it took the texture of the image as a map! How can I get rid of this texture?
Well once upon a time every one managed quite well with it, or at least it's equivalent, yes there were variations, with different words in different languages, but the principle was the same.
@@sentino68 Yeah, but at least metric kind of adds up and makes sense. I'm sure if I took an hour I'd be able to understand it and be fluent in it without any trouble. But inches to feet to yards? Did you mention you reference is the overall dimension on the left side? You need to go back to check because the dimensions for that bedroom in that bathroom is not the one that you scale it to.
I think he's saying the length of the 2 rooms combined did not equal the overall length that you set the for the scale of 38'7" when the bedroom is 16' max length

hi thanks for making this tutorial, I had a doubt, how did you change the dimensions while scaling up. I tried hitting the tab key but its not letting me change the value. Could you pls help?
Hi - I must did something wrong, when I imported a floor plan, measured it out with tap measure and then asked me to resize, then I right clicked to exploded, the whole entire floor plan (including outside the floor plan, the white part turned purple, but your floor plan , only the inside of the floor plan turned to purple), did I do something wrong?
Yes - if the image is in a group, you can go inside the group and resize it - just select "No" when it asks you if you want to resize the whole model - let me know if it works!
Yes that worked! Just explode the image, group it again, and go into the group before changing the scale. It will still ask, but only to rescale that group! Very convenient when you add a reference image when there's already geometry in the model. Thanks!
How did you get the tape measure tool out of guide mode? Everytime I follow along with what you're doing it creates a guide, I can't get it to resize the floorplan.
You should be able to turn guide mode off by tapping the Control key - I didn't realize that affected the ability to resize the floor plan - let me know if that works!
Hello Justin, I appreciate your efforts in making many Sketchup tutorials. However, for this particular one of importing an image, as I follow along the process, after I Explode the image , I am unable to select just the floor on the plan. Instead the entire image gets selected along with the bounding box. This is making it difficult to continue further. I am fairly new to Sketchup, are there any other settings that you may have to take care of , for this particular process?
I have retried the process several times, also with any random sketch, No Success!! .. I am sure there is a glitch or something is missing .. Please all viewers are free to help !!!!!!
I don't understand the issue you're having. If you right click on the image and a bounding box shows up, you click the button for explode. If you right click on the image and there's no bounding box, the image is already exploded and it should just be in there as a face with a texture applied to it. Either way, it's not absolutely vital for the image to be exploded anyway, it just makes seeing the floor plan easier while you draw your walls. Just draw your walls on top of the image and extrude them up.
"If you right click on the image and there's no bounding box, the image is already exploded and it should just be in there as a face with a texture applied to it." This is what I see .. Here I am not able to select just the floor part of the image within the walls .... My issue is the same as Derek Heisler and paige1622 below..

Tried this and when Exploding is doesn't recognize the internal facing like yours does. It just selects the entire rectangle of the image, inside and out, so then the offset doesn't work.
TheSketchUpEssentials I tried but it won’t give me the option after the first explode - I tried on the desktop and web versions... thanks for the quick response! 🙏

Thanks for the video, It works great when I us it. Only one small problem, when i import a floor plan and scale it up it becomes blurry. What can i do to fix this? Thanks.
Really depends on the resolution of your image. One thing you could try is going up to "Window," "Preferences," then going into "OpenGL," and checking the box for "Use maximum texture size." This will allow you to import higher resolution textures, but you need to be careful not to bring a ton of high resolution textures in because SketchUp doesn't always handle them well. Thanks!
Justin, I've tried several times to select only the area within the drawing after exploding the entire image, but it still selects the entire image. I've been importing images from my property appraiser's website for a long time to measure for roof estimating. This makes it better by avoiding the faces over the image below, but I can't understand why I can't select inside the sketch itself without the need to trace the whole thing first. Thanks.
Hi Chris - I'm trying to envision what you're doing a little better - you're right clicking on your image and selecting explode? And then when you draw on top of the image, the lines aren't splitting the face? If that's the case, the image isn't exploding properly, but I have a feeling I'm not understanding your question properly.
I'm importing a jpg of a floor sketch by screen grab and it has the blue lines around it. I then right click, select explode and I can tell it explodes because if I don't I can't use the measuring tool to resize, but after resizing, and clicking again to select inside the sketch of the house, it selects the entire face of the image including outside the walls of the house.
That must be the problem because I haven't drawn any lines when doing this. I could have sworn I saw you select the inside of the sketch before drawing any lines. I was amazed that Sketchup could recognise the perimeter lines in an image! lol
I had this too, when you’re using the measure tape, you have to click on your starting point and click on the end point as well, then type in the measurements you want and it should ask you to resize the model
I don't understand the issue - do you mean that the scale won't change? Make sure you've turned off create guide model by tapping the control key with the tool active
Im a beginner - Im on a MAC and Im having the same issue with the guide mode. I feel like Im missing something simple but keep trying everything and cant get it to measure for resizing. UGH!
I think I understand what's going on - are you clicking on two points, then entering a new dimension? If you click on two lines, it won't allow you to resize the model (I don't think), but instead will create a guide. Does that make sense?
As a total noob.. first day.. I just had the same issue on PC and my problem was that I did not realize it was working. I expected to click inside the measurement box and SEE some kind of indicator that I could not type the number to get the drawing to scale. Finally I just typed the number and it worked.. but not seeing some visual indication like a cursor confused me for a short while. BTW.. what a great intro video. You have teaching skills, Sir.
I guess I don't understand the question - the lines will change weight to indicate if you've closed in your shape or not, or you might have profiles set a little thicker in your styles. Does that help?
From what I can understand of what you're asking, my guess would be that your view of that line is not directly on axis, so it is drawn on screen like that. If you take the orbit tool, and rotate around a line that you have drawn moving from directly in front of it around to an acute angle, you should notice that it changes from a straight line to a "zig zag" line depending on the angle you're viewing it. It's just how the program displays the drawing in 3D space.
Just FYI that wall is NOT 38 feet long...the kitchen is only 11 feet, and the bedroom is 14...it should be 25 feet to get it to scale. Just what I see.
Thanks Justin, I watch this video every year or so. I really appreciate it.
Hi, cannot explode the outside of the floor plan, everything is included.
If you temporarily make the floor plan texture semi transparent, it makes it much easier to know what you've traced over and it goes much quicker.
How do you do that?

Do you have an updated tutorial? My floor plan image does not become a face like you show here when exploded.
What do you mean "updated?" The method hasn't changed - if it doesn't become a face, you might need to explode it again
TheSketchUpEssentials I tried but it won’t give me the option after the first explode - I tried on the desktop and web versions... thanks for the quick response! 🙏
Hi I have exploded this and still can't scale. I have used Ctrl button when the scale is active but I when entering the measurement and hitting enter the scale does not change - help frustrated:(
Super tutorials. I am having problems putting in some of my doors.
IfI want some walls shorter (like non load-bearing walls that run around top of stairs- how can Set these to be a different height. Apologies if I have missed this/ feel free to pointmetocorrecttutorial. Thank you, without these tutorials I would be lost. Off to make a contribution.
Excellent Tutorial! Very helpful.
Glad you liked it!
I'm not even able to type in the numbers in the length bar after I use the measuring tape tool
I can measure but I can't enter any number it doesn't allow to type anything, why?
That's great! Thank You a lot, Justin, huge help - coz before I was just doing oo many mistakes, learned it wrong and stucked with the wrong methods, what was just complete mess (to my shame) You can imagine...coz even if I have Architecture bachelor degree and used this programme there for years:-O...so these rganized smart clear fast lessons are even life saving, thanks, cheers!
Thanks!
I had the same problem, and I just had the original image next to my sketchup tab to see the measurements etc clearer👍
Sir there is any vedio on your channel about making 2d weldment drawings and detailed cut list from 3d model in sketchup?
I don't know what a weldment drawing is. I don't really have a cut-list video either - I just use either the outliner or a generate a report
Does this also work with the free version?
Not sure if you can import images into the free version or not - I don't believe you can
Yes, I just did it.
Hi Chris - are you making sure to close off the lines you're drawing on the face? If they're not closed, it will select the entire face.
That must be the problem because I haven't drawn any lines when doing this. I could have sworn I saw you select the inside of the sketch before drawing any lines. I was amazed that Sketchup could recognise the perimeter lines in an image! lol
Ha! Unfortunately it's not quite there yet - glad we figured out what it was though. Thanks for watching!
Which software u used
It's called SketchUp...it's kind of in the name of the video AND the name of the channel...
Really useful tutorial, thanks
Glad you liked it!
schöne idee, danke fürs zeigen! 👍👍😉😉🖖🏻
Can I just drape a image file of floor plan instead. Is it even possible? ??
Thank you so much our engineer Justin Geis
👍
Why don't I get the box saying "do you want to resize the model?"
I had this too, when you’re using the measure tape, you have to click on your starting point and click on the end point as well, then type in the measurements you want and it should ask you to resize the model
This tutorial is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks and well done!
Excellent tutorial!
Thanks!
Fantastic video, thanks a ton!!
Very helpful
Hi, i am failing to edit the walls using the measure tool. Kindly help
I don't understand the issue - do you mean that the scale won't change? Make sure you've turned off create guide model by tapping the control key with the tool active
@@Thesketchupessentials ahhh thank you! You don't actually mention that in the video.
can I do this with the Free version of Sketchup?
Hmmm...not 100% sure - I know you can draw the walls, but I'm not sure if you can import an image or not...
Sir I just want ask on how to make the zigzag lines into fine or smooth line in sketchup. tnx
I guess I don't understand the question - the lines will change weight to indicate if you've closed in your shape or not, or you might have profiles set a little thicker in your styles. Does that help?
I mean when I draw the line. It shows like zigzag not really a straight or fine line. What do u think a cause sir?
From what I can understand of what you're asking, my guess would be that your view of that line is not directly on axis, so it is drawn on screen like that. If you take the orbit tool, and rotate around a line that you have drawn moving from directly in front of it around to an acute angle, you should notice that it changes from a straight line to a "zig zag" line depending on the angle you're viewing it. It's just how the program displays the drawing in 3D space.
Why my sketchup do not asking me about do i want to resize the model?
Did you tap the control key to turn off create guide mode with the tape measure active?
where did you get your floor plan?
Honestly I don't remember - most likely I just downloaded a floor plan image from Google images. Thanks!
Thank you! This vid, helped my a lot. Subbed by the way.
At 1.21, You can capture the floor plan and try to follow the clip. ^ ^
Just FYI that wall is NOT 38 feet long...the kitchen is only 11 feet, and the bedroom is 14...it should be 25 feet to get it to scale. Just what I see.
Hmmm...probably right...sometimes your model is only as good as the info that gets put into it :)
The 38' 7" is referring to the overall depth of that plan, not the particular wall. That's why everything else is off
