Hidden Treasure Of Bön: Secrets of Mustang

- This film maps a journey made by Geshe Gelek Jinpa, a Bönpo Geshe (Doctor of Religious Philosophy) researching the ancient Zhang Zhung Empire which once stretched across the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau. The documentary follows Geshe Gelek as he travels through Mustang, a remote area of the Himalaya, on his misson to undertake the first survey of the Bönpo peoples living there, as well as to record religious sites, both ancient and modern at the request of Bön Mahasangha of Nepal. During this trip he discovers many treasures of Bön such as ancient texts, statues, historical records, and joins Prof. Charles Ramble in the dramatic recovery and identification of a significatnt Bönpo library at Mardzong. Other highlights include establishing the exact locations of a historic Bönpo monastery, Bönkor, and the hermit cave of Zhang Zhung Nyengyud Dzogchen master Rong Thogme Zhigpo. The fillm also shows unique footage of the Dögyab ritual held in the village of Lubrak to dispel negativities.
With sensitive camerawork and editing by Kemi Tsewang, himself a native of Lubrak, and an informative commentary by Carol Ermakova and Dimitry Ermakov which adopts an 'insider's' perspective, this film offers a precious insight into the rich historical heritage and living tradition of Bön in the Nepal-Tibet borderlands.

Thank you. I treasure this video deeply in my heart & soul. When studying Tibetan Buddhism I learned that the Bon religion was dead & long gone. But when I visited Tibet I found that “remnants” such as prayer flags still continued. As I observed the male villagers it seemed to me that “remnants” of the bon beliefs were prevalent. In addition, after seeing this video I discern similarities with the rituals of the Hopi here in SW North America. The landscape of Tibet & this area is strikingly similar!
Perhaps very long ago these were one people sharing one land mass.
in the airport in thailand i met a lama who sat by me on the plane and invited me to come to his house in katmandu on the following saturday i was on my way to teachings at kopan monastery with lama zopa i found his home he gave exact directions i was the only foreigner there we sat on the floor facing a low stage a figure appeared in lion costume and began to dance around the movements became wilder and wilder and he bent down was touching people's heads i felt my head being pushed toward the stage and a bolt of energy passed thru my body the ritual lasted quite a while then the figure fell and was carried to a couch i didnt know until i told a local about it and was told that i had been part of a bon ceremony and the lama in the lion outfit was in a trance i wish i could remember the lama's name he did come to america and was known as the healing lama it's been almost 30 yrs ago this was a wonderful documentary thank you thubten kundrol/joyce bovee new mexico
You probably met one of the Tamang or Gurung Bonpo priests who belong to a different kind of Bon. They are Mixed Bon traditions with the prevalence of Prehistoric Bon (Tib. gdod ma'i bon) which are very different from Yungdrung Bon of Buddha Tonpa Shenrab Miwo shown in this documentary.
Tibetan empire was at its peak during the Bonpo time - 1st millennia. With the ascendency of Buddhism in the 8AD lead to a gradual decline due to religious and political reason. Until around 10AD Tibetan empire encompass much of Tibetan plateau, all Himalayan Ranges, Central Asia and much of all 5 adjoining Chinese provinces.

There is a very dry air in Upper Mustang and being kept in the caves away from rain and snow further helped these manuscripts to survive through time.

Sad, the elders and their beliefs are so important, not only to their tribe, but to the world. Our children should be taught the same values, morals, and knowledge..As humans we have to keep balance with Nature and Spirituality..but man kind is now so polluted, as is our Oceans...see a pattern? Polluted Human Nature, is not wise!! Respect The Earth First...Peace.....pass it on!

A really interesting video about the Bön religion, that i had no idea even existed. More in the style of 'tashi and the monk' than the pete athans documentaries about the mustang region of nepal, which seem to be more about westerners discovering finds of aesthetic beauty, albeit with reverence for their subject and environment, this documentary seems to lean more towards the spiritual message of a religion that is dying out in part due to the need for a vanishing number of spiritual leaders to complete rituals and ceremonies that are integral to the core of the the belief system. The core of the documentary focuses on a spiritual journey to find Bön relics in lost caves of the mustang. The only mild annoyance was the speed of delivery of narration. Carol's Ermakova's intonation, clarity and script were great but the pace really needs to pick up, even if there are frequent breaks between narrative inserts, this is fine, you're not on radio. It's not dead air! Finally thank you for a really good and informative documentary.

They sure reminds me of the Inca ands Tribes of the southwest U.S. ...once hair style of one woman was like one Navajo men ands women wear to this time. Also the terraced garden reminds me of the terraced gardens of the Andes.

EDIT: I just saw at 18:13, it's indeed the same place! The video I linked above was the first National Geographic team to find those texts! No wonder they came back the next year :)
The movie was completed in 2009 but video footage from Marjang caves where texts were found was filmed right there in 2008.

At the very end there is a recording of OM MA TRI MU YE SA LE DU mantra recitation, one of the Essential Mantras of Yungdrung Bon.
