Hi from France, I discovered your channel about ten days ago and I'm really enjoying it (I'm so late, lol). It's detailed, full of information, stories and humor. Thank you !
Another classic that I was always drawn to in the arcade. The sounds and flashing lights. Tongue in cheek humor. Dope artwork. Thanks for shedding some light on the game.
I was always drawn to it as well. After doing my research I found out that it wasn't that big of a hit in the arcades. I love it though, always thought it was a fun game. Thanks for watching.
There was one of these in my local arcade . I thought the learning curve was very steep and I never got far at all . It looked fantastic , just too difficult though.
I liked to play this at Village Pantry where my dad would pick me up after my haircut, but then they had to go and replace it with Chiller, which I couldn't stand.
I'll have to get my butt back to Galloping Ghost to play on a real APB cab again. The guys who own the arcade always bring cabs up to our show in Milwaukee every year. Hopefully they'll include APB at this year's show. Great vid, Pat! I'm several weeks behind so I'm trying to play catch up.
I've always wanted to go to galloping ghost but I never got the chance even though it's only two hours away. Sounds like a great time. Thanks for the kind words
This game always got my money when I was in the arcade. You are right, it needs the pedal and steering wheel to get the full effect. Everything about this machine was perfect. Sound, graphics, subversive humor. Take my quarters please!!!
Interesting. Our local bar arcade had this in a few months ago, and it was the first time I'd ever seen it. We played it for a bit, but it didn't stay there long before rotating out.
This was a game I'd heard of or played back when it was in arcades. I picked up the Midway collection, and that was my first exposure to APB on PS2. It had an interesting concept, but not being straight action game or driving game, I wasn't sold on it. I went and played the other stuff on the collection I was more interested in at the time instead. I think the arcade setting probably adds another layer to the game that the home system didn't capture. The game might made a bigger first impression had I played in the wild back in the day.
Unless you are playing in an actual arcade cabinet you're missing the full experience. The steering wheel adds a lot to it as of the flashing light above your head simulating a cop car. I grew up on the game and have fond memories of it.
Here's a list of games to concidear for your future video documentrys 😃#1 pigskin #2 cyber ball #3 space lords #4 .50 cal #5 steal talons # 6 track n field #7 720 #8 area 51 #9 hyperspace #10 front line .... these are games I remember seeing at my local arcade
Cyber-Ball reminds me of an episode of that animated Hanna-Barbera show, The Jetsons, where George skips time from his place of employment to watch a football game played by robots. :D
After I started building my retro arcade system a few years ago, I put together a list in my head of the games I played the most at the arcades. Ot wasn't until a few months ago that I was able to remember A.P.B. after I got it, I realized how much easier a steering wheel & pedals would be. (Still don't have them) Great game from my "youth".
I love APB! One of my favorite arcade games as a kid. Nearly impossible to play today. Forgot there was a Lynx version and haven't checkout the console ports.
I only ever saw one arcade cabinet of APB in britain, and that was on a school trip to a campsite in a small sleepy village called staithes (they had one in the clubhouse ....and when i say campsite it resembled the army barracks in full metal jacket, not tents), near the slightly larger town of robin hoods bay, near whitby And just to put the year into perspective, that was also where i first played Captain America and the Avengers .....i have loved both since
Well done documentary... I've owned a APB arcade machine since '95, got the seat attachment years later - not an easy find. It was a game I played a lot bitd when it was first released. Can't speak for the ports, but in the arcade, the gameplay is ad infinitum. Also after Billy Bob Jack the apb offenders roll over again. But I found out something interesting years back, if you go one of the test modes, specifically for the bust photos of the offenders, there are a total of 20 offenders. I think there was one or two more female perps and the Police Chief himself, shows up. I never reached out to the programmer on this... I wonder at one time was this game conceived to have an ending at one time? Did they run of time? Was the last 5 perps removed due to memory constraints? ??
Thank you, appreciate the nice words. After the initial perpetrators are captured in the home port the game just ends and doesn't roll over like the arcade game. By the way, that is a cool machine to own. Some things you can't emulate on Mame and a steering wheel is one of them. I have seen that picture somewhere and I saw just recently because I noticed that the chief was in there and thought it was a bit strange. I know the main programmer worked on the game for two or three years so it's possible they just ran out of time. That's a good catch though, and something I can look into. Thanks again
I remember playing this through Midway Arcade Treasures 2 on the GameCube. There’s an extras section on the disc containing video interviews with some of the development team, and retrospectively they felt that APB would have been a better fit for home consoles rather than the arcade scene.
One of my favorite arcades. I use to play APB at my local variety stores. I end up crashing into things constantly that It was fun to do. BTW, please do a review on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
One of the reasons being is that the very first levels considered a training level which led to get a grip on the controls and practice the siren. I think I worked out pretty good.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I think there's a more important reason to make the first quarter easy. The player needs to get enough of a feel for the game to believe they can win, and to get a chance to enjoy the gameplay. If a player gets enough time feeling like they can do well, they'll be more likely to contribute when the difficulty ramps up. If the player gets too frustrated on the first quarter and doesn't get that hit of good play they're likely not to keep trying.
I got to play this game it look fun to play also I saw that arcade version on game show classic concentration on TH-cam recently it was kids week and one kid won it and now I got to play this one.
It sounds like everyone else thought this game was as hard as I did. I loved this game but there was never enough time to learn the maps or properly explore.
A police one I played a lot was a lightgun game, I think it was called police trainer or something like that; can guess by the name what that one is like.
Nice documentary. Only 2000 cabinets sold. I played it the arcades, but was defeated by the fast timer and odd gameplay motivation with the target in front of the car. I'm not good at this game at all. But I like the concept of playing as a cop car and patrolling the streets.
I haven't played this in so long, because I refuse to play it via emulation because of the controls, and when the only time I found one recently, the screen was all jacked up.

The APB at the American Classic Arcade Museum also has an LCD monitor now, it was quite interesting difference from the CRT Wells Gardner that it came with.
@@danasion2577 , LCD monitors are not right for these games. I think that pretty much everyone agrees with that. Unfortunately, CRT monitors are not made anymore. Something about it drew me in for sure.
One thing that made it difficult is that you can't just hold the siren down because the litterbug cars wont litter.
I hated that
I loved this game as a kid. It was in a movie rental place near me. I never remembered the name of it and it haunted me. Cool video.
