Ah... where were you when I needed you? :-). Being a large and lanky lad, I long ago swapped the original LR wheel in my '95 110 for a Momo. But the adapter! Back and forth with the suppliers (them in UK, me in Cape Town) to get it to fit. All sorted now, but what a palaver. Can you believe, I can now drive with the window rolled up?

New to having a defender, didn't realize there was cancellation for the indicators untill now. Previous owner had fitted aftermarket steering wheel which didn't have a long enough poky bit to reach the blue ring, it does now. Cheers for sharing.

If you can get the wheel off, it may be as simple as inserting a pin in a hole. The pin is typically a hollow type with a slit in it. There might be two holes for pins.

    Always interesting and entertaining.
Just to underline that Defenders seem to have been equipped with “whatever” was supplied at the time.
I researched various forums and concluded that for my 2011 90 van I would need a 48 spline boss. Not so. Mine is a 36 spline. My advise after paying a £30 restocking fee, is to take the wheel off and count before ordering your wheel.

Mike - I replaced my 36 spline wheel on my 1991 as it was huge (kept it though) and replaced it with a quick release slimline boss from Optimill race products (£72) and a Momo steering wheel (cheapest on Amazon at about £100). It’s super easy to put on and remove, provides more space for driving / maintenance and it a slight theft deterrent too (provided they don’t carry mole grips...!).
    Keep up the good work!

    Very informative video.
Also caught my attention to a issue with the cancellation ring on my Disco 1. I think that at some point the steering wheel had been off and the blue thingy was not correctly aligned.
When recentering from a left turn the cancellation works ok-ish, but from a right turn, no dice.
    Thanks Mike
    PS:
On a side note on one of your R380 videos you mention that the reverse gear switch wires are easily broken if badly handled.
Top tip: a dab of liquid electric tape or self vulcanizing tape around the wires and the rear part of the switch. It isolates, protects and allows for flexing.

Hi Mike, thanks for the great, informative, accurate and detailed videos!!! but can you PLEASE get a video light of some sort to light the items you are working on? Would make it better for my terrible eyesight.
PS, i have had a LOT of trouble with the cancellation actions; when turning right, it cancels before i have turned the corner (ie, when turning towards the right hand (only) corner, not straightening up), i have tried three different switches so far and all do the same thing. Any suggestions? I feel like the switch assembly is pushed onto the column too far???
Keep up the great work please :)

I had a similar problem here in the England with my 1999 Defender 90 CSW. The original wheel was getting tatty so I purchased a almost brand new wheel that had come off one of the last produced CSW models. It was leather trimmed and looked very good and would have improved the interior of mine a great deal. It cost a lot of money also. I didn’t know anything about there being two different spline sizes and unfortunately it doesn’t fit mine as I need a 36 spline! 😢

Very concise Mike. When I bought our '89 90 (Ebay special!), I thought the steering wheel wasn't the right type for the year. @nickboylen6873 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s a huge exaggeration. Most have their original steering wheels. Some have aftermarket wheels like Momo or cheap copies, and only some of those have the Optimill type removable boss. Likewise engine swaps - it’s not uncommon, but the vast majority of Tdi and later vehicles run the original engine spec, the bulk of conversions being 12J to Tdi, but I wouldn’t want to claim that most of those had been changed. Lots, certainly, but I don’t know if most of them were.

Really useful info Mike. Wish I'd had all this to hand when I was considering fitting an after-market wheel on my 1995 300 Tdi CSW. In the end I decided not to, for various reasons which is another story.
Just out of interest, have you encountered any problems with Lucas (Land Rover OE) steering column indicator/horn switch units? I went through a batch of replacements - on the first the horn button didn't work; but on all of them the stalk switch would not latch in position when turning right. We discovered the springs were soft on one side and I had to trim away the rubber gaiter to remove the tiny bit of extra pressure that was causing it to unlatch prematurely!
