The difference between Zara, HM and “luxury” brands is that Zara won’t charge you thousands of dollars for an item. With luxury price tags you would expect more for what you’re getting. Not only in the quality of the item but in its production and everything behind the scenes. Luxury brands just got outed big time!!! And this is a slap in the the face to the luxury brand consumer. I would expect prices to go down and end of season sales from now on from these brands 😂 The exclusive curtain has been dropped

I think people have stopped buying luxury simply because it's so easy to find on d8, and it's boring to look at, and even poor people bring that. Seeing so many poor people with LV bags is like ugh. Lately Birkins and Kellys from Hermes have become very popular and you can also find them in d8 and there are other places where artisans make them out of leather without a logo and for less than 900 dollars. It is even said that really rich people use replicas because they are rich for a reason 🙄 and the poor get into debt by buying something to show off or also using replicas. After all, they are fashions. Like Chanel, after a while you get bored of it and sell it, the same will happen with Hermes and then another brand will arrive to position itself. I really think that now they are only interested in Hermes because it is fashionable and all the "rich" wear it, otherwise no one would want it.

To answer your question to us: yes. I boycotted Kering since the Balenciaga scandal. And now (although I would have said I’m a huge LVMH fan, I cannot bring myself to give them my money. I work in corporate and practices that apply to one brand apply across the board when it means more profit, hence it’s unlikely this is just affecting Dior. I assumed that paying such a high price for a luxury “made in Italy” or “made in France” bag meant 1) made ethically by artisans in safe conditions and also paying for their expertise 2) completely different from bags and fast fashion made in sweatshops in Asia etc 3) this justified the luxury price tag. The outraged, including with myself, is because none of it is true.

I would definitely stop buying from a brand after knowing they have been exploiting people and using sweatshops. I pay those crazy luxury, because I expect the quality to be perfect and the customer service. At the same time I expect them to pay their workers fair wages and follow the country law. However after knowing that many brands produce their bags in China and other countries, and then complete them in Europe to be legally able to put the "Made in Italy or France", I have paused my purchases. I think going forward I will go more and more with contemporary brands that set on a lower price treshold. We work for our money, to be thrown away on a business that doesn't care about customers. I want to see the luxury industry reducing in size, so those that stay start caring about quality and customer service again.

Highly doubt this will stop people from buying bags. We know they set fire to their unsold products to seem more exclusive rather than sell them at a discount and this doesn’t seem bother the luxury community enough to stop buying. Another exploitation is just a talking point. Luxury seems to only be an illusion these days.
We also tell ourselves things like, “well these fast fashion brands do it and that doesn’t stop everyone else from buying their clothes, so why should I have to stop buying luxury” to justify it to ourselves. At the end of the day its a personal choice. I personally have stopped buying designer goods bc the prices are so insane and the quality is mediocre.

The problem I have is that every day we buy things that were produced unethically, from clothes and bags to cars and food. I think we all thought that luxury was made by artisans that took many hours to make special pieces that were worth paying these high prices. Now we are finding that these items are no better than any of the fast fashion items and we are all in some shock. So now what???? What can we buy? I don’t know any more

  • @dimdull

After Dior and Armani incidences came to light, it makes supporting luxury brands feel dumb since many of us think that we are not supporting products from sweat shop working conditions. Truth is there is no bottom line when brands are seeking maximum profits. Consumers are buying luxury brands no matter how high the prices are. That said, Jessie, do keep your channel going, I have watched your channel for years, and your content is good. While shopping mindlessly on luxury is unattainable, you are able to build topics around luxury shopping well, always looking forward to your ‘blabby’ but bubbly videos in the morning.

It's harder for luxury to be what it once was given that Houses are increasingly swallowed up by one or two conglomerates with foaming-at-the-mouth greed for profit and quality corner-cutting. Labor ethics and global manufacturing need to be an ongoing part of the conversation on youtube and I am glad that it's being taken more seriously. Part of me feels that shopping at Dior, et. al.will become like shopping at Banana Republic, Old Navy and Athleta (same site, same conglomerate). This, however, is also an opportunity for independent brands like Joseph Duclos, as you mentioned, to rise to glory (provided that Kering and LVMH don't eat them up as well). In sum, politics & global sourcing need to center stage in defining luxury AND the EU's commitment and ability to enforce ethical labor law is paramount. (Many non-luxury companies have extensive transparency about manufacturing processes included on their websites; luxury should start doing the same as well. But I mean REAL transparency not " environmental-green & labor-washing" so to speak).

Unless you own a bag made during time when luxury used to be luxury, everything else is just overpriced fast fashion. There is no way that the quantities produced by these fashion houses can be produced by skilled artisans at such a high speed. Even haute couture is questionable as some parts of the garments are made in India or China and then sent back to France to be assembled.
I guess we still support these brands out of sentiment and loyalty.

Jess please don’t leave TH-cam!! I love your content it’s always smart and positive. I don’t think I’d be surprised to learn working conditions aren’t stellar at any manufacturing site. No matter what brand or product. It wouldn’t make me
Buy less or buy differently because unfortunately, I think this practice exists for everything we consume. Maybe some good would come out of learning this and they can start to correct the working conditions. I always try to think of the positive in these situations. As for dupes. Nope. Not my thing. If I can’t get something I want immediately I’d rather wait. A lot of things are worth waiting for and make it more special when I get it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong that some people find joy in that kind of thing. But I don’t. So it’s just not something that’s right for me. I totally understand you, Jess, in terms of treating luxury as an escape or something that you can collect and enjoy - not only to wear it, but simply to look at it and appreciate its quality, shape, idea that stands behind this piece of clothing. But lately I realized that there is no place I can actually wear it - to work it seems unappropriate, I don't want to look 'flashy', as I am into lv, after work the only thing I can think about is to be comfortable - and most of the bags are not as useful as regular cotton bag from primark - and my luxury just stands on the shelf... I have dilemma what to save and what to give away, because I have a huge collection of dooney and bourke, really cute pieces, but I never see myself e.g. wearing a bowlig bag, because I would be to stressed that I have to hold it in my hand all day long and keeping it in mind not to lose it or something. I see myself quite frustrated with the amount of items I collected, and I begin to wonder if it all was useless and I wasted so much time on research on bags instead of spending it with my relatives and friends, or just with myself but in more quality manner... but then I realize how much happines it gave me, as I am on autistic spectrum and collecting things was always my hobby

Jess, first of all, I'm so sorry to hear about Alex--so shocking and sad. Just awful. I feel so terrible for her family. As for what you discussed here, I think your videos are great, and you seem to really have good intuition about the direction of your own channel. You've already done many fantastic videos on preloved bags, as you have so many in your collection. I love hearing about preloved because i don't buy anything new. Preloved is wonderful, and to me, is the best way to not contribute to mass production and waste--it's like the best form of recycling! And you aren't contributing to suspicious companies when you buy preloved, either. I think you have a lot going on with your channel already that isn't just "new luxury stuff" and you are gonna do great even if you decide to depart from that topic, specifically. Your channel is fun and interesting even without that, IMHO. Congrats on getting to 15k!!!

Just as I was about to comment "start exploring, researching and reviewing independents" ... you said "maybe I should ..." lol! But seriously, I think there's a dearth of good information on youtube about independent and custom bag/etc. creators. Like, most of us are aware of Tanner Leatherstien and his youtube channel tearing apart luxury/mid-luxury leather goods, but there are extremely few reviews of his own brand of leather goods - Pegai - many of his designs look wonderful to me! And then there is Peter Nitz, talk about high end luxury! EVERY bag he makes is custom made in partnership with the customer, so you get exactly what you want! His Dream Bag design is ... well ... dreamy! Quite a bit more expensive than many of Pegai's items, but with Peter Nitz, you are getting an item 100% designed, sourced, cut, sewn and created by hand (Birkin is only *assembled* by hand, fyi, which is still great, don't get me wrong), made to order, top of the line leathers and other materials, starting at about 1/3rd the cost of a Birkin or Chanel double flap. There's lots of other independent leather goods creators and small/medium companies that produce quality, fashionable, luxurious goods that don't have all the ethical baggage of the major stockholder-owned companies.

Hi Jess! You can re-focus your channel on 2nd hand luxury which is inline with many of the bags in your collection. People can focus on vintage luxury and or brands that you can educate your subscribers on like emerging luxury brands and brands with top notch quality. For example the common belief is that Chanel bags started to dip in quality in 2008. I was in KV yesterday and my SA was a new guy who had worked for Chanel for 10 years. He finally jumped ship due to all the poor quality and complaints from customers. I was looking at a Coussine Pochette and we compared it to the WOC….no contest both he and myself agreed as the Chanel WOC is just calfskin…nothing special while the LV Coussine Pochette was lambskin far superior and it was $700 cheaper. Additionally maybe also focus on some 2nd hand ready to wear…..which is surprisingly very affordable. I have so many great pieces 2nd hand from CDG, Gucci, Attico, Ami, Balmain, etc….and all in great condition from $150-$500 USD. So maybe broadening your scope on your channel and educating subscribers about your love of luxury and even doing some deep dives into some older and emerging brands. I think it will still fuel your love for fashion on your road to your Birken 25. BTW you are doing great this year saving and focusing on that dream bag so do cheer up…your channel should be fun and screw AI…I am not a fan and am worried for mankind …I got a bad feeling about AI…but I digress……keep on doing what you love.

For me luxury is having a beautiful breakfast with organic food like raspberries/blueberries etc. I love buying good quality food.
Or having a nice bubble bath with Epsom salt and nice essential oils and having mud musk on and just relaxing.
Spending time with my boyfriend doing something new, that's luxury for me too.
It's not always about giving away your hard earn money to these corrupt companies.
Btw my favourite handbag I own is Fairfox & Favor small Windsor bag in brown diamond suede. It's the best bag in the world. It's so much nicer and more unique to Birkin. And it perfectly depicts me.

Dear Jessie, don’t worry. You can focus on your love of handbags, whether they be designer or otherwise. There are so many more affordable brands that produce beautiful bags, they might not have the quality of Hermes but they don’t have the price tag either. I love handbags but can’t afford designer bags because I have been totally priced out of the market across all the luxury brands. So, as my mother used to say, I cut my coat according to my cloth, and I have found so many beautiful bags at a fraction of the price, which make my heart sing and which I can afford. I’m still into it, I just like vintage more than the new stuff. These design houses who create the same ole stuff for fashion week, be it the big four or resort wear is exhausting. There’s no creativity anymore. If one design house DOES come out with something, they all copy it.

I find the whole discussion on YT and in the comments very hypocritical, because the production of ALL clothing and accessories has a hugely negative impact on working conditions and, above all, the environment. With luxury, the only additional aspect is that the products are very expensive because of marketing and luxury boutiques. This is, of course, a real feast for the eyes for many.
I very much hope that all this will set something in motion. Buy less with more quality and ethical standards!

Hi Jess, I have been wanting to add a Dior bag to my collection, but that will not happen now. I am hoping that this recent scandal will encourage the luxury manufacturers clean up their act. I love LV, but yes, the plethora of new releases and re-churned designs has really put me off. I mean, how many ways can you redesign the side trunk bag? I bought the first one, that's enough for me, and I feel that doing it over and over just cheapens the bag. For pity sake, look at what they have done with the Capucines. Is nothing classic anymore? I love your content and your energy. Just do what you love :)

as long as people continue to buy, these sweatshop conditions and being robbed of our money will keep happening because there is no consequences for the brands. negative publicity is not enough, money is power and they will feel the effect only if money is being lost. people who care about human rights will definitely purchase less or stop altogether. I think people will start to side eye those that are choosing to turn a blind eye, because they are enabling the brands behavior. and to effectively make a change especially regarding human rights, we cannot be divided on what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable

I Have a few pieces of Dior on my radar, but I don’t own a bag or a scarf yet. In the foreseeable future I am surely not going to support Dior until they prove that they have complete control over their manufacturing processes and the working conditions of their employees. No matter if they have outsourced the work, they are still the employer and they have the responsibility to make everyone safe, satisfied and fairly paid. Otherwise you are just as sh*tty as Shein and all the other fast fashion exploitative companies. This to me is not luxury.

Start showcasing up & coming young designers who are producing chic, stylish & wearable clothes, bags, shoes & accessories and move away from the “standard” designer luxury labels. To be honest, constantly being bombarded by Hermes, Chanel & YSL is getting boringly yawn inducing, in a bad way.

Det stuff about comment section is very bad, it could be AI boots. This is actually making the whole internet and communities become trashed with AI garbage. It is very sad. There needs to be a way to sort away AI garbage comments. Very understandable you get de motivated. TH-cam and fb and Instagram could get less income in the future as fake boots create false sense of advertising power to the meta company when everyone realise AI boots generate false impression of views and views is what the algorithm pays creators for...very challenging
