Oh man this is in my wheelhouse. Humor me for a moment if you will. I had just turned 14 years old, and my favorite band in the world was Motley Crue, who had released Girls, Girls, Girls, and were the biggest thing on the planet. So when word came that they were coming to Charlotte in November of 1987, I was in. It was Motley Crue and some band nobody had ever heard of called Guns N Roses. I ended up going with 2 chicks, friends of mine, one of which had a mom who worked as a DJ at a local radio station, and scored us amazing seats right right by the side of the stage. It was my first rock concert, and I was buzzing with anticipation. Then the lights went out, the crowd erupted, and my whole world was about to change. Guns N Roses took the stage like a hurricane. They fucking EXPLODED. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. They looked like cartoon characters! The energy was ecstatic, and Axl was something to behold. He owned that stage. They blew every circuit in my little teenage mind. It was everything great rock and roll should be, and then some. My ass never hit the seat the whole time they played. Then Motley Crue took the stage, and I must confess, I was quite underwhelmed after seeing Guns N Roses. There wasn't anywhere near the energy, the attitude, or the raw grit GNR had put on magnificent display. It seemed almost hollow by comparison, and looking back, it makes sense, as they were fat and sassy on their third headlining world tour, and GNR were HUNGRY and on the uptake. Guns N Roses blew Motley Crue off the stage, and it wasn't even close. I ended up sitting down for a while, almost bored at the comparison. When I got home, my little brother, another Crue fan, was up waiting on me, excited, wearing his little Motley Crue shirt he got at Carowinds with the sleeves cut out, and upon sight said, "SO...HOW WAS MOTLEY CRUE?" I said "DUDE, there's this band Guns N Roses..." and went on a tirade about how great they were, how they were my favorite band in the world, and he just stood there looking at me, completely confused. It was like the veritable meteor crashing into the earth. Changed everything for me. Made me pickup a guitar, which in time made me become a musician. It was AMAZING.
I saw guns open up for iron maidens 7th son tour……the next day I walked into a coffee shop and slash and duff (I think it was duff) were walking out…..slash asked me for a cigarette….lol….I told him I didn’t smoke and kept on walking……you must remember that guns weren’t well known back then but I certainly recall that it was slash….lol….I met slash 20 years later but this time I stayed for a few words!!!
I somewhat remember the Girls,Girls,Girls concert here in OKC and I could've swore WhiteSnake opened for them, or might have been Winger...definitely not GNR
This is why I have been saying for a gazillion years that the Crue is the most misunderstood and most underrated rock band in ages. They had WAY MORE in common with Gn'R and their look and attitude than all these phony LA bands like Poison and whatever. Slash knew Nikki for ages. Slash talks about in his book and in Nikki's "The Heroin Diaries" how Van Halen and the Crue were the only LA bands he liked. Gn'R actually looked up to the Crue, and as it turned out, where less wild the Crue were.
Slash also played in London. The band Nikki and his friends created before Mötley was formed. When Nikki quit London and became famous, Slash played in London as a guitarist and also quit when he found the GNR guys
I saw them a couple of times back in the 90s before Vince's voice went, and they were AMAZING! I also saw Vince on his one & only "Solo Tour" & his voice was still intact then. His cover band did a great job. However, I've seen them probably 6 or 7 times since Vince's voice "Shit the Bed", & there is just NO COMPARISON. Yes, the rest of the band still sounds AMAZING, bit VN, just can't sing a lick anymore. I'm a big Crüe fan, so I continued to go to the shows, but it was pretty sad really...
Really how was the sound nice and clear sounded like he album come on man maybe had some good shows that dude can't play bass and Vince couldn't and can't sing
@@alanwoodwind5265 Bullshit! You never heard him on the "Dr. Feelgood" Tour when everyone was sober. I saw that tour twice & 'Ol Vince sounded FUCKING AMAZING & so did the rest of the band! Those two shows were sonic masterpieces in term of musicality! I also saw Vince open for "VanHagar" on his one & only solo tour. He was supporting his album "Exposed" & his voice was just as good then as it was on the two previous shows I saw. I'm not sure if he was still sober or not. The "cover band" he'd chosen to play Motley's hits was absolutely amazing! It was just like seeing a MC show. VanHagar sucked of course, but I've never really liked VanHagar 😆...
I was at the '87 Atlanta show. GNR lasted about twenty minutes before Axel lost his mind and tried to fight half of Atlanta's finest. Slash tried to get the audience to tear the place up so they would let his singer back up on stage but it didn't work. They played "Communication Breakdown" with roadie on vocals and called it a night shortly after that. Me and my buddies were a little pissed cause we were as fired up about seeing Guns as much or more than seeing the Crue. All in all good time was had by all. Go Dawgs!
I saw the G&R show in St.louis and let tell ya, the crowd tore riverport Amphitheatre the fuck up... Its on the interweb when axl was a little bitch cus someone in the crowd had a camera and was taking his picture. To this day, i still fuckin hate axl for that...
I remember when Guns N' Roses opened for Motley Crue here in Chattanooga it was November 21, 1987, my15th birthday... I didn't get to go sadly, but i heard from friends that did go that most of Motley Crue were wasted and in no shape to perform ( especially Nikki ) & that GnR was the better band in every way which was later confirmed by the local rock station KZ106
Watching that interview even though they were kind of wasted you could Tell Slash could still get his point across and made the point that his grandma was not someone to mess with. I actually thought it was a pretty decent interview cush words and all they were being honest and genuine. Duff seemed very smart and kind of the most likeable out of all the members.
I was at that concert in Lakeland Florida when GNR opened up for Motley crew. Met Axel rose and he was extremely nice to me, he signed my ticket we talked about Indiana because I'm from Indiana and he was very pleasant he excused himself. He said he said he wanna go smoke some weed.
I’d loved to seen these bands back in the day, I’ve heard great things about Mötley Crüe live back in the day, not so much these days. Guns N’ Roses I heard they were awesome also if they showed up not to wasted, a buddy said the worst thing he saw was Guns on tour with Aerosmith, but later shows he loved. He also let a young guy like me, that these guys, Kiss, Def Leppard and Aerosmith were the best shows he’s seen, but Bon Jovi was in the 80’s was his all time favorite
Oh you missed an amazing generation. I have stories for days. I was a teenager in the 80's. There were literally concerts every weekend (3 huge old school photo albums full of ticket stubs to shown for it) I lost count. I saw most more than once.... like The Crue, scorpions , AC/DC, Aerosmith, GNR, quiet riot, Nugent, ratt, riot, ozzy, Cinderella (dont laugh), dio, poison, Y&T, whitesnake, Boston, Dokken, metallica, quiet riot, poison, damn I can't even remember them all . (Aerosmith I have seen 11 times and ac/dc 8 times). Lucky enough to see queen once. Then comes foreigner, foghat, Billy squire (again dont laugh), van Halen, kid rock, Jimmy page and Robert plant (separately of course.. Too young to have seen my dream show ZEPPELIN)!!! I could just keep listing bands but I guess my point is I can't think of any I "didn't" see!! Lol Some crazy stories too.. Rudy sarzo from Quiet Riot, they played Rocky Point Park here in RI, asked me out for a drink after (I was 15) and said no. (Yeah yeah yeah)... took my phone number from my friend and called me 4 times in 3 days. I wouldn't talk to him. Lol. Most bands really did have roadies that walked around handing out backstage passes to the girls they found cute. I was offered so many times..... smart to enough and always refused (with the exception of bon Jovi and Ted nugent) because when I was 13 a friend of my sister, a couple of years older than me, got on the bus with van Halen (in Rhode Island) and ended up out in Montana.... no way home.. lol. And never did find out just her happened. I was smart enough not to be a "groupie".... but just a huge fan!! Best time? Ted Nugent pulled me up on stage in Connecticut as he sang "little miss dangerass" THOSE WERE THER DAMN DAYS! WE may have dressed crazy... used way to much aqua net and definitely too much makeup.. but DAMN WE HAD FUN!!! Ps.... blessed to have seen Def Leppard 5 times. 2 times pre Rick Allen arm loss and 3 times after. I will always respect that band for not even considering replacing him!! (I saw them again about 4 years ago and still amazing show...just a little slower pace)
I know, I missed out on a lot and it’s cool that you got to experience all that. I saw Aerosmith back in 2013 or 2014 at the Greenbrier Classic and it was amazing, they put on a incredible show, and was easily the best concert I’ve seen

GNR was kind of different to contemporary hair band like Crue or Poison. They opposed big hair, make up, spikes or other metal bullshit of the day. They even bring back the classic gears to their stage performance such Les Paul and Gretsch falcon instead Kramer or Jacksons V, minimize drums kit instead of Van Halen'is busy drum kit that favourite among the hairbands, they really starts a new trend of metal.
His bandanas hairstyles come from Ian Atsbury of Cult I think (I don't know Hanoi Rocks). Slash were Led Zep inspired, the rest of the band were punks.@@drugstorecowboy6540

The Iron Force These are standard photos that could be found in music mags such as Circus, Hit Parader, RIP, and Metal Edge. 80's and early-late 90's. There were plenty more titles, as well, but these were the main 4.
Whitesnake DID open for Motley on the Girls, Girls, Girls tour... at least for a few stops. I know. I saw the show in Phoenix and thought the order should have been flipped. Coverdale and friends nailed it. The only thing about Crue that stood out for me was Tommy's wild drum solo.
Michael Burns saw it in Worcester ma. Crues dr feel good songs were amazing in comparison to prior albums ...saw them again in honolulu even better in small arena headlining
Whitesnake is a real, veteran arena rock band from the days of Deep Purple and true hard rock giants any version of Whitesnake could outperform Motley Crue on stage. Tommy Aldridge's original band BOA could outplay Motley Crue
While growing up, we really saw Motley as hillbilly rock, GNR were really revolutionary in taking rock grom the 70's into the 80s and saving the scene....

Found them on MTV about a week later, and have been a diehard fan ever since!!...iiii]; )'...
The guns n' roses are 15 musicians who turn in4-5 albums of which 3 really valid. they rode the wave of real hair metal bands without risking their own, they started as a support group of the motley crue and copied them : female choirs, blond singer. a cross between poison ,motley crue , skid row. brilliant covers extremely commercial and here are the guns. what movies could you invent? The flour... what about when they hiked up G'n'R with pyro so when they kicked into "WELCOME" pyro went off and they looked like skool kids they were sooo happy! Gawddamn mann.... read the Dirt, Heroin Diaries and Slash's book.
Ahh! Those were the days! Oh how I wish the bands of today could be as wild and crazy as Guns and Mötley were. Now everybody is so fucking wimpy and afraid to "offend" anybody. Sheesh! Are we adolts or cry babies!?
Todd passed away from SLASH and then Sikki Nixx.... didnt call anyone! He changed his answering machine to "yeaaahh I can't return ur phone calls because yea.... im dead" after his nearly Fatal OD in the G'n'R hotel room!
I watched from 3rd row center at the Hollywood Sportatorium as Crue's Roadies climbed the ladders up into the light rigs with Peperidge Farm gold fish bags in their hands wondering WTF they were doing.. Slash wasn't joking about it taking a week to get all that flour out of his hair.. I'll never forget that as long as I live...
I've always loved Motley Crue's music but I've being told they suck in concert. Guns'n'roses always kicked ass in concert in the younger days in my opinion.

Please explain to me why Nikki Sixx brags about overdosing. He is the only guy I know of, who brags about dying and then shooting up more; like its a badge of honor. Ive seen lots of junkies die, there is nothing spectacular about it.
It's just a part of his image now. I had to give my little brother CPR and mouth to mouth when he overdosed (I was using at the time too, we are both clean now) and there isn't anything cool or glorious about being a junky, but if you're a rock star it seems to make it a little more tolerable to the average person. It's a dark and ugly road to be on and glad we are sober now, that day was the last time either of us used
Wow. Are you seriously that dense? He doesn't brag. He isn't proud of it. He uses his life experience to help others! And he truly has helped many!! Nikki if one of ther most honest, open, down to earth people out there. He donates officers from his book and music to addiction recovery charities and charities to help keep homeless kids off the streets. There is a huge difference between bragging and telling like it is.... straight up!!
Mr. Flim Flam you may think he is a demigod, i think he is just a man. As for who i am? Its what I’m not. Im not an ex junkie, with pride bestowed in my past decadence.

Though I will say, all bands put out shite albums post ‘93 like most 80s predominant rock bands.. I’ll take all of them over Bon Jovi though. Fuck Bon Jovi lol
When I got home, my little brother, another Crue fan, was up waiting on me, excited, wearing his little Motley Crue shirt he got at Carowinds with the sleeves cut out, and upon sight said, "SO...HOW WAS MOTLEY CRUE?"
I said "DUDE, there's this band Guns N Roses..." and went on a tirade about how great they were, how they were my favorite band in the world, and he just stood there looking at me, completely confused. It was like the veritable meteor crashing into the earth. Changed everything for me. Made me pickup a guitar, which in time made me become a musician. It was AMAZING.

Nice story mate!
⚡🎸 *love it* 🎸⚡
I snuck off there to see them myself. Barely 13 and got into so much trouble when I got home but it was so worth it!
@GuitarGeek72 absolutely…..He signed my les paul for me and had a little chat…..cool guy for sure
I too occasionally go on a verbal plectrum of curse words
In the dirt, the part where Nikki is at the party, steven adler, duff mckagan and slash were at the party
I somewhat remember the Girls,Girls,Girls concert here in OKC and I could've swore WhiteSnake opened for them, or might have been Winger...definitely not GNR
Dalton Blair I’m pretty sure that WhiteSnake opened for them a few times Nikki mentioned it in his book. But I read it a while ago so I could be wrong
Yes. It was Whitesnake first part of the tour then GnR
Slash was almost the guitar player for Poison.
Slash also played in London. The band Nikki and his friends created before Mötley was formed. When Nikki quit London and became famous, Slash played in London as a guitarist and also quit when he found the GNR guys
I've seen a ton of 80s & 90s bands. Motley put on phenomenal live shows.
Fuck yeah! I saw Tesla open for Crue. It was an amazing show. I think Firehouse was the very 1st band that opened though.
Vince Neil has never been good live...
Best days of my youth. Love ❤️ I know things got better.
Never ever piss off a grandmother!!!😂
Yup. Mine's the sweetest person ever but scares the shit out of me when I've somehow managed to piss her off
I was at the '87 Atlanta show.
Oh, BTW, That was on july 2 1991
But the Success was Phenominominal!!!!
Motley was okay. But man, GNR kicked so much ass that night on there performance. Woah.
Slash's diatribe reminds me of Nigel in the dressing room complaining to Ian about the sandwich platter
I want a guitar pick that says "A Plectrum of Curse Words."
thankyou for new information i love to learn more about 80s rock bands and such.

Wow, i was at that Lakeland, FL show. It was great.
Lol
Some crazy stories too..
@@zacharydotson383 wow. Sorry. I didnt realize I wrote a whole book for a comment 🤣 I just get going down memory lane.!! And yes! I saw Aerosmith again that tour. They were great. They may not have the same energy level as they did 30 years ago but they still got it!! Good for you!!
@@jojox9791 AC/DC was the greatest live show I’ve ever seen. Like you, I was a teen in the 80s and saw many of the bands you listed.

Pamela Anderson Lee had 2 kids with Tommy Lee. Whether they married idk. But this is wrong.

Nowadays, Duff Slash & Steve can’t abuse themselves or they will die.
OMG Doc rolling Tommy through an airport😂😂😂
GNR was kind of different to contemporary hair band like Crue or Poison. They opposed big hair, make up, spikes or other metal bullshit of the day. They even bring back the classic gears to their stage performance such Les Paul and Gretsch falcon instead Kramer or Jacksons V, minimize drums kit instead of Van Halen'is busy drum kit that favourite among the hairbands, they really starts a new trend of metal.
Axl was all glam up in the Club days and stole there looks from Hanoi Rocks.......
His bandanas hairstyles come from Ian Atsbury of Cult I think (I don't know Hanoi Rocks). Slash were Led Zep inspired, the rest of the band were punks.@@drugstorecowboy6540
@@Riazor1370 Slash tried out for Poison! Biggest glam band in hollywood at the time.

I saw them in Johnson City Tn
Yep. Saw Whitesnake open for Crue in 87 in Louisville.
Whitesnake is a real, veteran arena rock band from the days of Deep Purple and true hard rock giants any version of Whitesnake could outperform Motley Crue on stage. Tommy Aldridge's original band BOA could outplay Motley Crue
Great video!
While growing up, we really saw Motley as hillbilly rock, GNR were really revolutionary in taking rock grom the 70's into the 80s and saving the scene....
Starting at 9:50 there is a pic of slash Tommy Lee and 1 other guy all with their ar.s around each other. Who is the guy in the green hat on our right ... slash and Tommy are obvious... but I can't tell who the 3rd is. .. is that izzy ?

I still regret not being able to go to the Lakeland show. I remember my friend Michelle, who was my friends younger sister, and a devout Motley Crue fan, (she would sketch their portraits, meet them back stage to get their autographs, and they would keep them) told me about this band Guns n' Roses that she thought I would really like, boy was she right!!

I don't know at all. at most given the "sympathy", a film about "axel and its feuds" with slash, kurt cobain , vince neil, def leppard, etc. etc. after the sex pistols are the "big brother" of rock
Man, those were the days when through year old RS n other magazines we learned about the fight between Vince n Izzy n how Axl stood up for his Indiana friend ( no internet in 89-90 in Mizoram, India).
Why have I seen sooooooo many concerts of both of these bands and have never seen them perform together
The flour... what about when they hiked up G'n'R with pyro so when they kicked into "WELCOME" pyro went off and they looked like skool kids they were sooo happy!
Gawddamn mann.... read the Dirt, Heroin Diaries and Slash's book.

Please explain to me why Nikki Sixx brags about overdosing. He is the only guy I know of, who brags about dying and then shooting up more; like its a badge of honor. Ive seen lots of junkies die, there is nothing spectacular about it.
He is a rocknroll demigod and your who again???
It's just a part of his image now. I had to give my little brother CPR and mouth to mouth when he overdosed (I was using at the time too, we are both clean now) and there isn't anything cool or glorious about being a junky, but if you're a rock star it seems to make it a little more tolerable to the average person. It's a dark and ugly road to be on and glad we are sober now, that day was the last time either of us used
Cool story bro

If anyone saw this tour I would love to hear about it.
I’ve had to be thrown in a shower by my cousin after going in to the bathroom of a trap house I used to kick it at and doing a shot of fentanyl. I didn’t even know what happened. Everybody at the house said they saw me go in the bathroom, then heard a loud “thud” in the bathroom. My cousin ran in, hit me with 3 cans of Narcan and jumped in the shower with me and rubbed my chest till I came back to. I woke up and didn’t know why the hell there was a bunch of people standing around me crying and sh*t. I literally had 0 Recollection of what had just happened.
