Dc is really good at that, they did it with kiteman as of late in both the comics and animation, they made Cisco Ramon a cool character when originally he was a joke character, the suicide squad took a bunch of unknowns and "C-listers" and made a super fun movie, and they also had success bringing Doom patrol another unkown group a lot of much deserved recognition.
I would like to see him do a movie on Kite Man from the Harley Quinn show! Definitely a villain that’s a true underdog, but shines as hero in the most unexpected ways!

The small but important part of that movie is that all characters - male or female - are allowed to be vulnerable AND badass at the different moments of the story. I think it adds a surprising amount of depth to what on the surface seems to be a goofy explosion-fest.

As much as I enjoy and respect James Gunn and his work, they already made the mistake with Snyder and Goyer of trusting people with a specific highly stylistic but narrow vision with characters they didn't understand. I could be all biased and say James Gunn is just a better storyteller and therefore is more worthy of that trust, but he's pretty specific in his vision as well, and it might not be ideal for the DC universe as a whole. It needs variety but first and foremost storytellers who are passionate about the characters. James Gunn is passionate about antiheroes, weird underdogs and out-of-place talking animals (reductive statement, but hey, it's a youtube comment), and that's potentially perfect for the Suicide Squad, but I don't know that he'd even be interested in picking out who should tell certain other stories that are outside of his apparent set of delightful but specific obsessions. But who knows, maybe he's got if not a vision of a universe, a vision of who might have the visions. I suppose you'd have to ask him who he thinks should write/direct other DC properties. Does he still do those Q&A's he used to do every so often on social media?
