The Song is called Rootdown cause the sampling is from a song called The Rootdown by Jimmy Smith.
The boys said they were playing basketball when the song came on and they was like, how can you NOT sample this. lol
    Check Beasties Song, The Eggman.
    One of my fave.
    It's just fun.

The Beastie Boys broke up with the death of MCA in 2012. Their last album Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 was released in 2011 while MCA was sick with cancer. They recently released an excellent book (The Beastie Boys Book) which I think even hip hop fans who aren't hardcore BB fans can enjoy, because they talk a lot about the punk and hip hop scene of the late 70s and early 80s New York. The audio book is excellent with lots of guest readers. They also recorded a live "reading"/discussion of their book called The Beastie Boys Story which is available on Apple TV Plus.

The audio book is great. I thought the last album was great too. They really put 100 percent into everything the did. They put out a lot of quality material.

Pure hip-hop when it was about fun and cutting lose...also most of us who were around during the inception of hip-hop think todays "hip-hop" is full of a bunch of posers who are so propped up with auto-tune and the industry crafting to the masses that the art is non-existent.

The album ‘Paul’s Boutique’ would cost a fortune to make today, because of the volume of samples that would have to clear. It’s a master class in overlaying samples. Made in 1989.

I like your beats and your reaction vibe. For this song, it’s important to note that the B-3 organ sample throughout the song is actually from Jimmy Smith (famous 60s jazz organist) and his song…”Root Down” 😉

Can't go wrong with, "shake yo rump" "Get it together w/q-tip" & " 3mc's and 1 dj" then you might consider getting down on their Paul's Boutique album. It's the alternative hip-hip that was mind bending then and now. Songs like "High Plains Drifter" or the classic, "Egg Man" 😂 you haven't heard anything like it. Thanks for the reaction!!

This track (to me) was about the Beastie Boys roots in hip hop. It's a play on the word 'route' hence the use of subway maps and subway imagery. The lyrics reference hip hop in New York in the early days and the 4 elements of MCs, DJ's, break dancers and graffiti artists. You cant have hip hop without these 4 elements. (it's like KRS One said, "you are not doing hip hop, you are being hip hop") ... Really enjoyed this reaction man. Rock on 🤙

If the mixing sounds rough, it's because it's purposely built on actual vinyl samples - in this case, Jimmy Smith's Root Down (And Get It). It was meant to sound gritty and funky. That was the vibe back then - whoever could cop the best record sample ain't done yet was king!

One thing I find interesting from reactors to their videos, is that they think a lot of the vids are older than they are. When the Beasties came out, they were old school (86 first record, not counting their 83 single), but they kept rapping old school into the 90s (when they had their come back). They just kept tinkering with the music. It was a really interesting mix of old and new.

You ain't lying life has changed. I'm 50 now, born is 70. I grew up through the start of hip hop. I generally listen to nothing but old skool, just can't get into what you kids call Rap now. The Beasties are true hip hop. One of the most important Bands(not just hip hop)ever. Check out Paul's Boutique, the entire album is a Masterpiece. That record couldn't be made today, it would absolutely cost way to much to pay for all the samples. 10 to 20 per song. The album is nuts, its a must listen. I will however check out what you're putting down. I'll listen to new tracks when they come out, unfortunately I usually don't get through them because they're nonsense to me. Good luck brutha and god bless.

Love this reaction, appreciate you! Gotta say regarding your note on the mix tho--I think it's pretty safe to say that the was 100% intentional, not about technology. All that fuzz and crackling throughout, that was part of the sound for us folks who listened to music on actual records. This mix was honoring that, imho. For context, maybe listen to some other tracks from the same album: "Sure Shot," "Get It Together," "Flute Loop," or one of their biggest commercial successes (tho i think not one of their best songs), "Sabotage".

These guys found innovative ways to create sound with not even a 10th of the equipment and tools there are out today. Paul's Boutique changed the way hip hop created sound. The music you hear today would not have existed without Pioneers like the Beasties, Run DMC, Def Jam, Rick Rubin, PE, Grandmaster Flash, Biz Markie, Busy Bee, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick...I could go on and on. Its an evolution, i was lucky to grow up seeing in real time because i was born in '73.

All the nostalgia, the breakdancing clips and NYC scenes, they were paying homage to their roots growing up in NYC. I love the Beastie Boys, been listening to them since the 80's. They were so influential and really helped open the door for alot of young rappers. LL Cool J is one of them, they discovered him and helped launch his career. You should check out their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. They were inducted back in 2012 by LL Cool J and Chuck D. Ad Rock and Mike D were there to accept and give speeches. MCA couldn't be there because he had cancer and was really sick at the time. He died a few weeks later. I mostly stopped listening to rap and hiphop after like 2010. There are some newer songs I like and listen to but for the most part it doesn't do anything to move me. The autotune, the mumble rap, the computer generated music, its all just so generic and boring. There's no soul in it.

  • @mikefetterman6782
    @mikefetterman6782 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

it was awesome being there with the beasties when rap started. They were there in Brooklyn and Manhattan when the first rap artists were just starting in the seventies. The beasties started then and by the mid eighties were touring with Run DMC and gave LL Cool J his start. They are not the first, but they were there at almost the beginning when rap was just starting to be recorded. They helped Rick Rubin start Def Jam Record with Russel Simmons to get hip hop started. Most rap listeners today know little of the history of their music.

Good times gone and you missed them

What'd you think? Did you miss your calling?

When hip hop began it was about good vibes and real issues. That's what makes the comedy sketches about "nice rap" so funny, it really was nicer.

The mixing and mastering on that is intended to sound a little bit distorted and old. This is typical beastie boys. They try to bring across the nostalgia through their videos AND music.
Crystal clean production wouldnt fit the beastie boys ;)

Rap/Hip-hop now can't hold a candle to The O'Gs. It's all angry and stupid and disrespectful to the world now.
Beastie Boys, Fat Boys, Run DMC, Public Enemy
He'll, even Houdini made more sense than this shit today! And the list goes on and on!
