The sample is actually from Jimmy Smith...they did a shout out right before you asked about it. Beastie Boys were pioneers, guys like Afrika Bamtaataa, Grandmaster Flash and Cool Herc laid the foundation but these guys were among the first to take up the torch along with RUN DMC...whom they came up (and worked a lot) with. This track is something of an homage to that....and its dope af.
This was bitter sweet..I'm 47 been rocking with Beastie boys sense I was 12. And I had the privilege to see them live 3 times. We ain't old till stop rockin..RIP MCA
In the early days of Hip Hop they didn't have samples of beats to compose a song as you may already know. So, if you look in this video, you'll see clips of them playing instruments which was how they come up with the hip hop sounds you hear!
I taught my toddler nephew whenever I'd ask him "What time is it?" He'd say "It's time to get ill" STILL does it and he's 25!!! So how about LICENSE TO ILL !!! Stay safe every6!✌😷🤘 This song is 🔥🔥🔥
This song is a tribute to Jimmy Smith. He had an album/song called Root Down. It's basically a cover of the music with them rapping over it. Here is the original: th-cam.com/video/nuiEkKjfLPo/w-d-xo.html
You can tell how they aren't just some guys trying to use hip hop culture to get famous. They drop SO MANY classic hip hop and funk references, plus general pop culture from the time. They knew all the players in the game at the time. They grew up with those people, they were friends, they saw each other at shows all the time.
Mike D on Drums. Adam Horovitz slangin that guitar. MCA droppin the BASSSSSSSS. They actually PLAYED the Instruments. DONT TRY THAT AT HOME Hip Hoppers. Smoother than a Hot Dog with no Mustard.
Everyone watching this video - do yourself a favor and get the Beastie Boys Audio Book! It's a fucking amazing account of the Beastie Boys as well as a great history lesson about NYC in the 80's.
What I love about the beastie boys is that none of their songs sounded alike. They were Extremely diverse in the instrumentals. They never made the same song twice.
Thanks !!! Glad ya like that ! Super Dope ol' school hip hop !! Beasties given props to Kool Mo Dee , Bob Marley , Grandmaster Flash , Brim , and if course, the main sample from Jimmy Smith ! I also miss the old NYC ... Break Dancing, graffiti & tags & burners on the trains ! Beastie Forevah ! . . . Hope the 'radio hits' don't infiltrate a good rabbit hole ... Stick with the old stuff... Pass The Mic, So Whatcha Want, Sure Shot, Professor Booty, Car Thief, etc... Paul's Boutique is prolly my favorite album from them - Word 🆙 !
Basically, the music is a cover of Root Down by Jimmy Smith. Basically they were sampling him but playing the music themselves. Check out the original -- you won't be disappointed. This is from 1972: th-cam.com/video/DP4LGEAfUEY/w-d-xo.html
Like every track they produced, it’s a mix of samples, multiple drum tracks, and their own playing, as they are all musicians from childhood. This track has the main sample of the song Root Down ( and get it ) by Jimmy Smith ( you get a shot of the album cover in the video ) with other samples and drum breaks over top of it. Outstanding. There are videos of a breakdown of all the samples they used for each of their albums. It’s mind boggling how many samples of songs they wove together seamlessly. True music junkies and crate diggers.
They hardly had to sample it in a traditional sense. Almost just rapped over long sections of the Smith song. Such a dope Jimmy Smith record. Beasties were always digging for cool wax.
I'm subscribing after watching this one video. This video was suggested to me because I love the BB and it's great to see ppl in 2020, hearing their shit for the first time and loving it. Great video!
If you like the old school should check out the live version of "Root Down" from the 1997 Free Tibet concert. Instead of the organ you hear during the breakdown in this version, they use the classic "Apache" breakdown. It's dope!
I have no idea how you get to be 30+ years old and not already know this song. But I’m glad you dig it. These guys a legends. Tip of the iceberg my man. Keep digging. They have a lot of gold.
The Beasties were not shy about explicit lyrics FYI. The version in this video messes up the flow of several of the verses with the horrible dubs over the profanity in the album version. I'd say some good general advice is to listen to the original album version if you want to react to what people actually listen to, and to hear the artist's vision of the track. Still, many props for taking this one on. And I like your chill approach to the music.

Jimmy Smith live is an awesome album.
also - if hes asking if anyone sampled THIS - the prodigy sampled "omg thats the funky ish"
I guess 1994 really is old school now. Ugh my life. Ugh my lower back. Ugh🤦🏻♂️.
G2 lol I’ll be there one day. 🧀
@@NJCHEESE it don't take long. it goes by fast.
Truth
Me thinking old school....1980.
This was bitter sweet..I'm 47 been rocking with Beastie boys sense I was 12. And I had the privilege to see them live 3 times. We ain't old till stop rockin..RIP MCA
BEASTIE BOYS - SO WHATCHA WANT! One of their best jams!
great reaction. one of the greatest, if not the greatest, rap group of all time.
The Prodigy sampled a line from this - 'Oh my god that's the funky shit!'.
“Oh My God that’s the Funky Shit!” was sampled by Prodigy in their track “Funky Shit”
Back at the Chicken Shack by Jimmy Smith should be in everyone’s rotation…the best jazz/funk Hammond organist of all time
If you are a true beastie fan you automatically wanna start singing sabotage after this
This is the best Beastie boys song... hands down

This video is a love letter to the NYC they came up in. It’s perfect.
I taught my toddler nephew whenever I'd ask him "What time is it?" He'd say "It's time to get ill" STILL does it and he's 25!!! So how about LICENSE TO ILL !!! Stay safe every6!✌😷🤘 This song is 🔥🔥🔥
I love watching people reacting to the music that I listened to when I was young. I love this track.

This was 30 years after the Beatles, and another 21 years has past.
Old here, 49.

Flat out classic hip hop. Beasties are legends in the hip hop world
What I love about the beastie boys is that none of their songs sounded alike. They were Extremely diverse in the instrumentals. They never made the same song twice.
Sorry for the loss of your friend. Rest in peace.
I'm a bass player, and holy sh*t, that bass line is wicked!
The thing I always loved this album was that the Beastie boys all played the instruments. Along with a few friends of theirs
Great reaction! Way to many great songs by the Beasties for me to list but here's two, 3 mc's and 1 DJ, and flute loop.
Sorry to hear about your friend passing away, hang in there. Great reaction
Thanks !!!

Graffiti....can't stop, won't stop!
Paul's boutique is one of the greatest hip hop albums ever made.

Here it is a year later it's not over
Next-level music video, great shout-outs and nods to musical pioneers, super cool stuff. I can't believe I've never seen this before.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The basic track of this song is a sample from Jimmy Smith's Root Down. They did curse in this but MTV censored it.
2:32 The Prodigy sampled the line "oh my god, that's the funky shit" in their song titled Funky Shit! The more u know
This was in 94. They're showing the early 80's scene in this video
Prodigy sampled it for "Funky Sh#t"
Check " Skills to pay the bills" for some RAW Beasties
RIP MCA x

Beastie Boys - Intergalactic if you haven't already.
They hardly had to sample it in a traditional sense. Almost just rapped over long sections of the Smith song. Such a dope Jimmy Smith record. Beasties were always digging for cool wax.

It’ll be over in the next couple 10 months later we’re still dealing with COVID
Great song. Great vid. I think Paul's Boutique is their best album. but, all their shit is fire
Jimmy Smith "Root Down" (And get it) 1972
If you like the old school should check out the live version of "Root Down" from the 1997 Free Tibet concert. Instead of the organ you hear during the breakdown in this version, they use the classic "Apache" breakdown. It's dope!
Some parts of the song have been sampled but most of the song is a Sample of Jazz artist Jimmy Smith and his song Root Down. TH-cam it
The root down single CD was a all time great every version of this song was fire.
Beastie Boys - Ch-Check it out
So sorry for your loss...
You said put a new beat to this... naaa keep it as is. That funky 70s sound was dope 💪🏻
Appreciate that
Yessss ❤🙌🏼
There's a whole root down album that has like 5 different remixes and live versions of root down.
It's not a sample. It's live instruments. 60%-75% of their material is them playing drums, bass, guitar, keys and dj.
The Prodigy sample this track along with a load of RATM.
Hahaha, “Oh my god, that’s the funky shit!”
It already has the right beat, doesn't need any help ... Beasties have been sampled plenty
Gotta do High Planes Drifter
Stay strong, dude.
You should do Beastie Boys - Hey Ladies. Lol.
Welcome to EYES OPEN👏🏽👏🏽🌴Your amongst friends homie 🌴🌴GUAM C’s U🌴🤜🏽🌴🤛🏽

This flew under the radar back then for some reason
People were definitely swearing in songs in 1995!
they do a song with Q-tip from the TCQ. It's called 'get it together'. I think you'd like that one.
CAN'T WAIT I'N DROPPING IT TOMORROW
When I was in 6th grade, I thought I was going to marry Ad-Rock, this was 1986.
Jimmy Smith Root Down (And Get It)
After this track came Sabotage, right? Am I remembering right?? Used to listen to this record on repeat, and I think Sabotage was up next.
If frank zappa rapped he be the beastie boys
That's mind blowing, man. 🤪
a comment for the algo
Check out Sure Shot.
RIP MCA!!!!
IT'S A HOOK BEAT
They're talking about how and where they grew up. No samples. No loot. Leave it alone.
"I'll wipe it clean in 2021." You're an optimist if you think there'll be a 2021! :D
Sabotage next?
It was a better time for music and scenes, my friend.
I have no idea how you get to be 30+ years old and not already know this song. But I’m glad you dig it. These guys a legends. Tip of the iceberg my man. Keep digging. They have a lot of gold.
RIP MCA
You assume correct
