Yeah I thought "That car has been beaten on constantly!" - but I think it might have just been the last owner who's beaten on it for a short time before f*ck*ng the synchros through incompetent changing and parking it up - given how the clutch still had plenty of beef left in it, the flex discs were in good condition etc. At 40,000 miles if it had been abused constantly I'd have expected more wear.

good morning from Australia... One thing that also can cause the crunchy shifts is the pilot bearing in the crankshaft, which looked a bit average in the vid. Another maybe indication is the Haynes manual bookmarked at crankshaft, if that's been replaced then the pilot bearing is probably a different size for auto and manual trans. It could have an auto crank in it with the wrong size pilot they didn't swap out, the input shaft then doesn't run true which presents as crunchy shifts at higher revs. Looking forward to the actual diagnosis, it's a beautiful looking car!

Interesting that they use ATF in the manual trans. Double clutching will help get into 2nd if the syncro is going. If you're good at it, there's no grinding
When double clutching you have to match engine speed and vehicle speed to make smooth shifts. Like shifting a semi truck, or a non synchro transmission.
You are one of the most entertaining car guys I've ever watched. I look forward to your videos and I definitely don't sit here trying to figure out the problems with the vehicles before you say it lol Keep buying these sketchy/vague auction vehicles! They way you describe sounds, pick through problems and explain the fix is easy for anyone to understand. And these are probably all things your viewers have dealt with at some point or another.
Only thing wrong is the 2nd gear synchro. Because it's the gear most failed shift. The 2nd most abused synchro. Low miles lots of new nonowner drivers. There is some case damage that can show the same symptoms but this is missing the other signs. Confidence 90%. I got a cheaper set of sockets and pressed in my own super strong magnets into them for my own magnet set. I can still use the sockets though they are shallow. Some places it's very handy to have a set of magnet sockets so you don't drop them or have to reach. Reason is I could pull a full GM auto trans and transfer case on the bench in under 40 min. Fastest time is 37min. Fiddling wastes time. This trans should be on the bench on under 15 min. I miss working in the shop. I was disabled a few years back.
@@Shiftheads Been told many times I'd be a good teacher. I have a red card chefs ticket, many years in construction and near 20 years in rebuilding transmissions. interesting how the knowledge differences in trades make you a better problem solver. Trouble is by the time you gain the knowledge you are viewed as too old to be useful in any one industry. Add a disability and it's near impossible to find a spot you fit.
I wager the new trans fluid will not fix transmission and grinding 1-2 gear shifts. I am guessing it is a clutch issue. BTW I was like 958 at 34 minutes after LSC uploaded this Camaro SS video to TH-cam. Love your informative and entertaining videos. I do miss Peter however. I hope he can make some automobile videos too.
Wow Alex you are doing better and better! I already love all your videos, but now yoy even explain how things work before doing the job! Wow great work, great content, great editing, you are a great guy, keep it up!
I had a 69 Z/28 when I was 21, in 1970-74. After multiple clutch setups to find the right one... and, a lot of time under the car, handling a very heavy Lakewood bellhousing and the M-20 tranny, I had a clutch setup which is still in the car. The M-20 was a tough transmission and thank God it was aluminum and lightweight.
37:16 It still amazes me how you can clearly determine the difference between a master technician & novice. The sure amount of information in your head behind the “How & Why” in mechanics is fantastic. I really hope you’re able to pass along this talent and insatiable hunger for knowledge to your children. But hey if it don’t bleed over to them, just know you made at least one other enthusiast happy. Clearly I’m a nobody but appreciate you chief‼️‼️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Moisture in the brake fluid does not affect feel or anything related to pressure transfer. water is just as good for pressure applications as oil (pressure transfer wise). The issue with water (moisture) in brake fluid is: 1, it changes the boil point of the fluid. 2. In cold climates it will freeze/become highly viscous and you can't get flow, 3, will cause rust to form internally
Yeah, by modifying the boiling point of the brake fluid it can cause vapor spots in the line, leading to spongy brake pedal feel and ultimately causing the brake to not engage totally
I have a 240k 5spd on my vw that grinds a lot. I put 1qt of Lucas oil trans fix in it and the rest 75w-90 every 30-40k and it completely removes any grinding
My favourite TH-cam channel by a long shot! It's so relaxing, down to earth and entertaining at the same time. I don't even own a car, I love the mechanics though. I guess I'm learning for some day in the future! Thanks Alex and Max for your awesome work!
I got a 15 SS with a manual trans. As well was having the same issues, went ahead & change the trans. Fluid as well as the Diff. Fluid. That seem to help my issue. But love this car, not really to many issues besides that. Now goes into 2nd without issue shift smoothly.
I have a LS3 M6 myself. 2nd gear grind is somewhat common with these cars. I changed out my fluid to a synthetic D4 ATF by redline with good results. Have my 1-4 shift tuned out after cam and headers install. Excited for the next video on this car! D1SC procharger install would be sick! Wanting to do that on mine, along with E85 conversion
That motor swap scam happened to @CleetusMcFarland with Ruby their auction corvette! Someone swapped a 4.8 into it then sent it through the auction! Saw another channel get scammed on a GT mustang, they swapped the coyote for a 4.6 and didn’t even complete the swap. It was sold as non running!
Yooo.. german 5th gen diver here, love seeing this car in your shop. The two key / two fob situatiuon is because some dude managed to turn off the ignition while driving ... There is a video on YT where a 2 meter guy managed to pull it off... but he had to move the seat all to the front.. its so silly...

Little tip when synchros wear a bit and get grindy and you have ATF fuid in there-Step up to a 10w-30 or 10w-40 motor oil. The thicker fills in the worn space on the syncro and it will work smooth for quite a while plus it's not too thick like gear oil is so that it won't shift when cold.
I absolutely love the pro-clip mount I got for my G8. I got my mom one for Christmas for her Camry and she loves hers. They cost more up front but after years of cheap universal mounts that fall apart after a few months I’d say ProClip is totally worth it

2021 Camaro SS 1LE 6M My Dad had an 87 Iroc with the 5.7 when I was a kid. We only had it for a year, but we still talk about that car today. I hope my car is as memorable for my kids
That dry and crusty clutch plate and dry main shaft of the transmission is the reason that the syncros gets worn out, because the clutch doesn't disengage properly. And that's why it doesn't grind when you shift slowly 👍 Actually I think there's a very big possibility that the transmission is OK and you just have to fix the clutch...
Comaro trans issues... by best man had an 69 RS auto that we put an M21 with vertigate in. I had to teach him how to drive manual. He hooked up the linkage wrong so it went 1 2 4 3 ... so that was 1 forward, 2 back, 3 back, then 4 forward. Took him a while before he fixed. good times!! Thanks for the memory.
Dr Pepper is my favorite Coke. Oh, and it is really, Coke. In the South, especially Georgia, all carbonated beverages are Cokes. No pops, no sodas, etc.
get the l99 brake fluid reservoir & and 04-06 gto clutch fluid reservoir. You'll need extra length of hose and some good hose clamps or reuse the factory clamps. Can also just use the existing brake fluid reservoir and cap it off but the l99 is the molded plastic with no hole in it to be sure if won't leak
You might want to invest in an Eastwood transmission table. It's like a regular workbench but you can move all of the fluid to the drain in the middle. That way it makes it less messy and you have a way to get the oil into the container. Looking forward to the next video.
I had a '68 that someone had setup for the 1/4 mile but still Street legal. It was HORRIBLE on freeway driving. Sold it to my middle brother who wrecked it before he paid for it. Still has never paid for it. This was back in 1981.
No the mass airflow sensor the stock one you opened was probably the original when you install the after market intake tube on these newer cars camaro/ mustangs they have to have a mass air that matches the intake tube size for the extra air being taken in. They usually do require a tune afterwards

The C.A.G.S .(Computer Aided Gear Selection system) back when I purchase my 1992 Corvette was added mostly to increase gas mileage to avoid the gas guzzler tax reducing the cost of the car. The earlier manual Corvettes didn't have the C.A.G.S . because they didn't have the low end torque and would stall out. It was good in the sense that it saved money when purchasing the car new (reducing MSRP) bad because it was annoying and dangerous in certain driving conditions. It only activated when taking off from a full stop slowly. First thing I eliminated after purchasing my Corvette. It actually activates an relay that pushes a rod into the transmission to physically block the 1 to 2 shift.
Great as usual. FYI - You are expected to go through a few pair of gloves per day. Even per hour on a trans or engine job. I go through few just doing yard work on a Saturday. They’re cheap and effective. Just bite the bullet and change your gloves when they tear! (Not sponsored. Ha.)
I appreciate the effort you put into these videos Alex. I look forward to each and every video. I also like how long they generally are compared to the rest of media now adays with shorts and such.
35:18 There's a fun bookmark in this video. Yes, as a fellow Mid-Westerner, (Kansas) it is POP. My favorite is also Dr. Pepper. I grew up drinking Coke because my mom liked that. When I was 5 or 6 Dad brought home a case of Dr. Pepper (you remember the glass bottles we had to return to the grocery store, right?) and that was my favorite ever since.
Tips. Use methylated spirits to do the first flush on brakes or a different lighter colour fluid so you can tell when clean fluid is coming out. If you’re using a vacuum bleeder remove the bleeders and fit a small O ring or thread tape or coat them in brake grease first to prevent air being sucked in instead of fluid being sucked out. For oil spills us wood or recycled paper kitty litter to soak them up , pour the sweepings on paper roll it into a log and use it to heat the fireplace.
Hey there Alex. Cannot believe you have been in the auto industry all these years and never internally repaired a manual trans.....yet you pull apart auto trans often.... I'm an 80 year old Australian mechanic, from my apprenticeship days I was doing exchange rebuilds on short blocks, heads, water pumps, transmissions, drive shafts, suspensions, brakes, working alongside senior mechanics and machinists until I got plenty of experience in most operations......Seems modern day is all about electrical and on and off fitting of assemblies.... Looking forward to your follow on video diving into the trans......
I had an RSX that made the same noise and changed fluid and adding Synchromesh fluid fixed my problem and many others in the forums. Never had to go into transmission
Can I just say you have got to have balls of titanium to take apart, fix, then reinstall a transmission. Totally impressed! As a kid I’d take apart everything and attempt to fix, put back together; sometimes with a few pieces leftover.

Maybe you should teach then if you can't wrench. Don't let the knowledge go to waste 🤜
Pressure fingers are bent, 2nd gear synchro failure was probably a symptom on this, clutch not fully disengaging
It's a clutch issue I got a 2015 ss did the same thing
I had the same iasue in a kia, thought the trans was gonzo, turns out it was a cracked master cylinder
Good Lord ... People still mentioning that dude. LSC and him are over! Accept it!
Wow Alex you are doing better and better! I already love all your videos, but now yoy even explain how things work before doing the job! Wow great work, great content, great editing, you are a great guy, keep it up!
That was some fancy clutch system animation 👍🏻
I am so excited to see this car more. This gen of Camaro is my all time dream car. I will own one one day! I love everything about them. Interior, exterior, power, style, all of it! Fantastic find, Alex. Can't wait to see this finished and then see you enjoy it!
Adult Alex dropping the Driveshaft, 13 year old Alex ohh a machine gun 🤣🤣🤣
I must admit you are natural at this - your videos are very entertaining as well aa informative. Congratulations!!
I can’t believe no one called out the problem. Alex was granny shifting, not double clutching like he should.
It's not a tractor trailer.
@@rpturbo Joke.....
you
Most kids under 30 won't get this reference.... Makes you feel old. 😅
@@dssjr85u right what’s the deal
If you know what your doing, you never need a clutch to shift smoothly.
Finally you got a cool car. I’ve had my SS for over 13 1/2 years .
Moisture in the brake fluid does not affect feel or anything related to pressure transfer.
water is just as good for pressure applications as oil (pressure transfer wise). The issue with water (moisture) in brake fluid is:
1, it changes the boil point of the fluid.
Can t wait for more. I had a 1995 Z28 with the LT1 engine, with the manual 6 speed, greatest Camaro ever.
In the beginning it showed the bidding was at $13,400, if the motor and tranny were bad that would be a horrible deal.
I got a 15 SS with a manual trans. As well was having the same issues, went ahead & change the trans. Fluid as well as the Diff. Fluid. That seem to help my issue. But love this car, not really to many issues besides that. Now goes into 2nd without issue shift smoothly.
Don't end up like Tavarish and start buying too many cars.
Big diffrence! Tavarish has cars from years ago still not finsihed, and legit got cars done and away every month or so😂
Too late for that, he already has a lot of them! 🤣🤣🤣 But Alex usually just fix cars and send the back out into to the wild.
Alex actually knows how to fix cars not just spit polish them and stretch an episode.
For real right. That lightening is becoming a barn find in front of our eyes.
He rotates his stock very efficiently
I have a LS3 M6 myself. 2nd gear grind is somewhat common with these cars. I changed out my fluid to a synthetic D4 ATF by redline with good results. Have my 1-4 shift tuned out after cam and headers install.
Excited for the next video on this car! D1SC procharger install would be sick! Wanting to do that on mine, along with E85 conversion
Love these cars! Nice choice for a video. Thanks for all you do for the car community
I just bought a 2010 2ss 6 speed and was so happy to see this upload.
How is getting a coyote a scam 😂
@@cormaro13You didn’t read that correctly
@@sav22rem22 you right I didn’t lol
Yooo.. german 5th gen diver here, love seeing this car in your shop.
The two key / two fob situatiuon is because some dude managed to turn off the ignition while driving ... WITH HIS KNEE ... due to this chevy did an official recall on the keys to get the key bit removed from the fob and replaced by these additional keys you have. There is a video on YT where a 2 meter guy managed to pull it off... but he had to move the seat all to the front.. its so silly...
This is something I never expected
The car I've owned the longest is a Trans Am. I love American Muscle!
@@LegitStreetCars Merica!
But so awesome!
@@LegitStreetCars How about a first gen, firebird or Camaro. Would be cool to see a real classic muscle car on the channel. Brian from Cleveland,Ohio.
Same chassis as your Caprice, designed here in Australia
Congratulations! I have a 5th generation Z/28 and I love the car.
Can't wait to see the next episodes.. i love watching transmission tear-downs ever since i found Precision Transmission YT channel...
And I quote " original formula of Coca-Cola was given to us by aliens" You're frickin hilarious!!! The original formula of Coca-Cola had 9 mg of cocaine per glass! I bet that was one heck of a kick!!! 😮😊🤤 Those emojis are the three stages after consuming the original formula of Coca-Cola. 😂
Actually that's quite a low dose. Heavy users take over 100mg as a single dose. Need to drink litres of it to get there same "kick"
I may have drinken one a day back then but now, they're all poison
Little tip when synchros wear a bit and get grindy and you have ATF fuid in there-Step up to a 10w-30 or 10w-40 motor oil. The thicker fills in the worn space on the syncro and it will work smooth for quite a while plus it's not too thick like gear oil is so that it won't shift when cold.
Where my Chevy guys at? Whatcha got?
Love the 5th gen. I've got a 2013 2ss as well.
Needs an Italian Tune up

I got a 1993 Camaro z28, a 2005 Cadillac Escalade, and a 2003 s10 xtreme
My last Chevy was a mint '09 Cobalt SS with 50k miles.
I absolutely love the pro-clip mount I got for my G8. I got my mom one for Christmas for her Camry and she loves hers. They cost more up front but after years of cheap universal mounts that fall apart after a few months I’d say ProClip is totally worth it
Alex. You`re the highlight of my Saturday evenings. This time it took a while to wach your flick because of Olympics and Bundesliga. I always save your vids for last like the best bits on my plate. Lots of love to you, family and Max from Germany and , thank you two. You and Max.
2021 Camaro SS 1LE 6M
My Dad had an 87 Iroc with the 5.7 when I was a kid. We only had it for a year, but we still talk about that car today.
I hope my car is as memorable for my kids
I live in the chicagoland area as well and i wish it wasnt so impossible to find auto techs as honest and as knowledgeable as Alex.
Dope! I can’t wait to see what you do to it 💪💪💪
To fix the lean code…you need to put a tune on the computer to recognize the cold air intake…that’s you mass air flow problems and lean conditions
That dry and crusty clutch plate and dry main shaft of the transmission is the reason that the syncros gets worn out, because the clutch doesn't disengage properly. And that's why it doesn't grind when you shift slowly 👍
Actually I think there's a very big possibility that the transmission is OK and you just have to fix the clutch...
Didn't these have the same wonky 2nd gear lockout like a C6 Vette.... I know for sure a C6 Z06 had that BS.
@@inverted311
Sorry I wouldn't know. I haven't any specific experience with that.
Just 35++ years of mechanical experience 😉
Wouldnt it grind in the other gears too if that were the case?, very high possibility of bad shifting action from previous owners in a car like this
@felipecabrera5468
Usually the grinding gets less and less the higher the gear and almost not noticeable shifting to the highest gear in my experience
@@kimhdfxstssame here, i was so sure it was a master/slave cylinder
Comaro trans issues... by best man had an 69 RS auto that we put an M21 with vertigate in. I had to teach him how to drive manual. He hooked up the linkage wrong so it went 1 2 4 3 ... so that was 1 forward, 2 back, 3 back, then 4 forward. Took him a while before he fixed. good times!! Thanks for the memory.
X-pipe, Alex! X-pipe it!
No too much rasp
You must be a ricer if you like x pipe , way too much rasp
That sound!! It triggers memories for me. I had this issue once on my 03 Focus Svt 6 speed.
Dr Pepper is my favorite Coke. Oh, and it is really, Coke. In the South, especially Georgia, all carbonated beverages are Cokes. No pops, no sodas, etc.
I HATE that about that area of the south. It's only because Coke is headquartered in Atlanta.
Ford is my favorite Chevy.
@FastSS02 Nah. I'm from Mississippi. Grew up in Alabama. It's the same in those two States.
I'm from Louisiana we don't call them "cokes" at least the part I'm from
get the l99 brake fluid reservoir & and 04-06 gto clutch fluid reservoir. You'll need extra length of hose and some good hose clamps or reuse the factory clamps. Can also just use the existing brake fluid reservoir and cap it off but the l99 is the molded plastic with no hole in it to be sure if won't leak
GM Synchromesh fluid works wonders!
Are you still selligh cars before collecting the money first? Whatcha got for sale?🤣
Your brother sounds cool
Nobody cares.
No the mass airflow sensor the stock one you opened was probably the original when you install the after market intake tube on these newer cars camaro/ mustangs they have to have a mass air that matches the intake tube size for the extra air being taken in. They usually do require a tune afterwards
@legitStreetCars I love watching your videos. They have inspired me so much. I bought a 04 ford F150 5.4 L 3V that I’ve been working on trying to being back to life 💪 I’ve got her started but not the FTPS is causing my check engine light to come on. 😢 but at least I got her running haha
had an early 2010, 1SS, absolutely loved that car. 70K no issues, traded on 2016- 2SS, another 65K no issues. Solid cars

Thank you Alex!!! Finally a Camaro!!! And a 5th generation!!! This will be my favorite (of course I have one)!!!
Excellent commentary during your fix it invasions. Thanks, Theo fr. soCal.
I bought my first 5th gen 2ss a few months ago too I’m in the process of fixing the oil pressure issue it has and doing a few upgrades
Great as usual.
FYI - You are expected to go through a few pair of gloves per day. Even per hour on a trans or engine job. I go through few just doing yard work on a Saturday. They’re cheap and effective. Just bite the bullet and change your gloves when they tear!
(Not sponsored. Ha.)
And I'm from Arkansas, now living in Lakemoor, right outside Chicago. Great car!!
I appreciate the effort you put into these videos Alex. I look forward to each and every video. I also like how long they generally are compared to the rest of media now adays with shorts and such.
Never seen an exhaust system come out of a car as easily as yours did. God bless her. Damn you I'm not sure which
35:18 There's a fun bookmark in this video. Yes, as a fellow Mid-Westerner, (Kansas) it is POP. My favorite is also Dr. Pepper. I grew up drinking Coke because my mom liked that. When I was 5 or 6 Dad brought home a case of Dr. Pepper (you remember the glass bottles we had to return to the grocery store, right?) and that was my favorite ever since.
you’re the goat man been seeing cars with the same problems post in facebook marketplace place and been fixing them
I have a 2010 ss 6 speed, red jewel tint, bought it new. Kept it original. Love it! Only 65k on it.
I love my manual 2SS 2011. It’s a beast from factory. Only mods are muffler delete and skip shift delete
First time I watched great video watch the Rebuilder on the Camaro transmission
I had an RSX that made the same noise and changed fluid and adding Synchromesh fluid fixed my problem and many others in the forums. Never had to go into transmission
I feel so satisfied after watching all the repairs great edits !
Thank you🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Can I just say you have got to have balls of titanium to take apart, fix, then reinstall a transmission. Totally impressed! As a kid I’d take apart everything and attempt to fix, put back together; sometimes with a few pieces leftover.
Also, use the CASTROL HIGH MILEAGE ATF as well. And a new K&N Trans filter if applicable.
