    I really want to send him a live center for his tailstock. For those who don't understand, the tailstock is the device he pokes into the end of the part for stability, but due to his not being able to rotate with the part he has to oil it for lubrication to prevent friction welding. A live center has bearings to provide spin

    My grandfather passed away when I was 2 years old. He was a machinist just like this. I had heard a story of how a neighbor down the road needed a crankshaft for his his car and requested that he make one. and he did and it fit and worked perfectly. I was astounded and proud as this sounded difficult and later when I finished school I then knew how difficult it must actually have been. But this is the first time I'm seeing what he must have done with even older tools. Fascinating.

    I worked in an engine factory for over 30 years. Before we outsourced the production of crankshafts to the company Alfing about 20 years ago, we made the crankshafts ourselves. As a young engineer, it was interesting to see how crankshafts about 8 metres long were straightened on the lathe with a huge hammer. Some of the larger engines had even unhardened shafts made of 42CrMo4 steel. It's all a question of calculation.
    The crankshafts in the video are obviously not hardened either, obviously the strength values are sufficient to be able to bear the low specific load in operation.

    • @WyMustIGo
      @WyMustIGo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the shafts in this video are garbage. Besides not being hardened, they are not balanced and there is no precision. This is the crap you would find in KIA and other trash imports.
      Back in the 60s and 70s Japan made trash too, but after CLINTON (democrat fools) sent all the manufacturing to other countries, the quality dropped big time in the USA. At the same time Japan went up in quality. These days I would rather own a Toyota or Nissan than any GM/FORD/DODGE garbage made this crap like what you see in this video and other imports.
      Watching this video is like watching cave men construct something. Out dated, low quality, mass production sweat shops. Like China, take advantage of low wages/poor people, but fatten up the corporate profits by outsourcing.

    These guys are good. But this is something you will see in any good machine shop anywhere in the USA. Many of my co-workers after being machinists for decades can almost do these jobs blindfolded. This is just basic machine shop experience and work. The big dif now is with CNC the tolerances are closer and the machines are programed. Interesting video, this is 20 years behind the time.

    My replacement (Indian) made crankshaft for my Perkins 3.152 tractor engine looked good on delivery and was cheap, but on measuring it up I found that accuracy wise it was rubbish.
    The main bearing and big end journals all tapered by half a thou over a one and a quarter inch length.
    The spiral oil grooves machined at each end (to keep the rope oil seals lubricated) were left appallingly rough with ragged and burred up edges that stood proud and would have destroyed the rope seals immediately.
    The crankshaft driving flange (on which the flywheel is bolted) was a full twelve thou loose in the flywheel recess.
    You only get what you pay for is an unescapable truth, and eventually I had the original crankshaft reground by a specialist machine shop who also supplied the oversize bearings to suit.

      The machines I worked with run modern processes even though they may be older machines the new machines sold seldom use all the features.
      There are some of the processes that were developed to address modern EPA oil consumption standards primarily focused on cylinder wall finish to implement this change would have required buying a different piston ring costing a dollar and change more, on 2 million engines?
      Not going to happen so they pay somebody off and get the standard eased on certain models because the newer models don't use as much fuel for instance that means they can build more gas hogs if you would always come up with a plan to wiggle out of it immediately .

    There are a lot of comments here congratulating these gentlemen on their hard work , as if working hard is something good.
    If the idea of working hard is good , why not make it more difficult and instead of using lathes use hammers and chisels instead ?
    Obviously , working hard is not the goal , making high quality products is , and sadly , these engine cranks fall far short.
    I have never seen anyone else mention it , but these is a fundamental flaw in how these cranks are machined up. , making them all quite useless. , and that is ..balance.
    Before machining starts , the center line of the crank is to be determined.
    They way they do it is by eye (ugg) based on the end of the crank sticking out of the lathe ...that is wrong.
    The center line should be determined based on the crank throws , and then you grind the bearing surfaces locations to suit.
    The center line of the crank should be determined by the flats cast on the crank.
    The way that they do it puts all of the bearings in line , but the weights of the crank are not in their correct positions.
    There could be a discrepancy of a few millimeters or more ,, both in how far the weight is out , or at what angle ...who knows.
    These cranks are going to be out of balance , vibrate like hell , and last a short time in relation to the genuine articles that they are modeled from.
    And I haven't even mentioned polishing , hardening or balancing after machining.
    Working hard means nothing , if your work is sub standard.

    Not saying the guy(s) aren't fair at machining the same thing over and over, but I don't think that makes them genius. In my country, 120 years ago a man built a complete engine in his garage and that engine was used in the first airplane in the world to make a controlled flight. That man did not have machines half as good as the ones shown here, and there was no carbide tooling or even high speed steel tooling. Just what the man could forge in a bed of charcoal. The guy who built that complete engine and the men who built that first airplane were geniuses.

      The part about doing an awesome job "for what they have" is the thing that keeps getting repeated about these videos. They HAVE a MACHINE SHOP. That they choose to never clean it and work in the dirt is no miracle.
      All these machines they have are newer than the clapped out old South Bend WWII lathe that I learned on. What they do is nothing really special, and yes, I can make a crankshaft in that same machine shop. I'll bring my own mics if that's okay.
      Again, I don't mean to say the guys aren't hard working or industrious. They work hard. Their work habits in general are poor and the place of business is filthy. Give some kid a nickel and have him sweep it out.

    This is the way we used to make things in America...highly skilled men made everything from steam ships to railroads and all of the tools and machines that made them...I had the privilege and pleasure of working with some of them in the 60s...
    They could make build or repair anything in their craft...Some of the stuff that I worked on had run for over 100 years...Now we build everything faster and cheaper and that is by design...We have no reason to build a ship to last for 100 years anymore...or a locomotive...
    But this is the technology that won WWII...This is exactly how we were building a ship a day and an airplane every 12 minuets or so...and all of the rest...One of the reasons that we won the war was because we could and did outproduce the world...We literally build and produced stuff faster than they could destroy it..The USA out produced and invented and innovated in every field and by any metric...And we sold to the world!

      Lots of spirit and get'er done attitude. Highly commendable but hard to get lasting quality this way. Also, raw parts look cast, so ...

    • @travisshrey6720
      @travisshrey6720 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're suggesting this is still the way to go? We built stuff the way we did because that was all there was. There is no way I want a crankshaft in a modern engine to be made by someone running a manual lathe and a handheld mic.

    • @stevebell4906
      @stevebell4906 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@travisshrey6720 Are you suggesting that these people in this market should go without rather than produce these parts and engines locally..using the resources that ere available to them?...Because surely you can't believe that there is state of the art manufacturing as an option?...Or these guys are not producing a saleable option and filling a need and making a profit?

    • @travisshrey6720
      @travisshrey6720 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevebell4906 That isn't remotely what I said. You sounded like you were glorifying the 'good old days' of hand production. Like I said, that is fine if that is all you have, but eyeballing measurements with a handheld micrometer is hardly accurate. There is a reason we use CNC for everything manufactured these days.

    • @stevebell4906
      @stevebell4906 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@travisshrey6720 But this isn't the good old days...This is today...These people don't want your option of waiting until that magical time when tech come to their world...The need to take their pick from what is actually to pick from...I don't know who your "WE" is....But these folks are not among them...
      In the real world people would always prefer and chose to have an engine powered water pump to carrying buckets....And a tractor with a hand built engine and cast parts to to doing field work by hand...And a machine repaired and running to a broken one...
      This is a practical solution to their problems or it simply wouldn't exist...No one is subsidizing this...

    There must be a serious lack of investment capital. It's been about 90 years since these procedures have been superseded by more automated machinery that can make crankshafts much faster and more accurately. This is really the tail end of abandoned technology.
