It’s because they recognised that Cal was essentially blaming his family for his own decisions (decisions that inherently messed them all up, especially Nate).
I generally don't dislike Cal. I tend to have a lot of respect for people who give up on a lot of their life to do right be their family. I also don't blame him for Jules (Other than video talking without consent, that's obviously wrong) because he didn't know her age. The way he behaved while walking out on his family was clearly fucked up

I love the cinematography of this episode. Im an artist, so I definitely think it adds to the story rather than taking away from it.
