Ah, the joys of band camp Losing my shoe in the middle of a drill, slipping on a banana peel on my way to the field, forgetting my instrument with my other stuff and doing the walk of shame to retrieve it, having to explain to my parents that, yes, I do have band camp for 5 hours. The list goes on and on. Oh, can't forget when I had a near death experience involving a tuba case and my unfortunate choice of where to stand at the time.
I had a near death experience involving a car accident on the way to practice. I couldn't stand because my knee was hurt, but I still wanted to go to practice.

Flutes and Clarinets are much harder to hear in a Marching Band setting, but I think the flutes in my band were still louder than the clarinets. 😂😅
We really are lol. Like, cymbals have a thing after halftime performances where we stand in a circle, play our cymbals on our neighbor's cymbals, and hum a weird toon. We call it "The Summoning". We also flung baby powder at everyone once uniforms were taken off.

My band camp experience: My cabin mate tried to make ramen, spilled water on the stove and it burned on there. So, we promptly asked one of our directors, Mr. Rohr if he had any soap as we also burned rice, so the kitchen was a mess. He said he didn't have any soap, so we went back to our condo. While I was in the shower, the other five girls in the condo found some dish soap under the sink. They poured the entire bottle into the dishwasher. When I got out, they had all home to do something else, and I was left looking at the mountain of bubbles slowly oozing out of the dishwasher. I called them, and they all came back and freaked out. One girl took a picture, and she and I took it to Mr. Rohr later that night, spawning the best inside joke quote in the Allen Band "Mr. Rohr, we found the soap."
Kayleb Rood Really? Oh, we go on trips. This year we're hitting up California for the Rose Parade. Usually we just go to other parts of Texas. We did apparently go to Hawaii and Canada at some point, but that was before I was in high school.
We marched in a Disney parade last year, it was amazing. Band kids+12 hours in a charter bus= no sleep and all four parks in three days. I barely remember it. But just band kids at disney world... ah memories
Our director was once out so the sub had to come... Okay, so we're allowed to go straight from lunch to band and start warming up before class so that we can start music right away. However, the sub had no clue how to instruct or anything so she walks in to what sounds like the devil had arrived but its just us warming up and starts screaming that we are all too loud. Long story short, we ended up watching like five videos on music that day. Our band director the next day started saying, "Oh geez the saxes probably looked like giant bludgeons or something, the oboes were lil stab-stab thingies and the flutes were lil katana guns" and to this day I still think that half the subs trying to direct the band thing that xD
When our band directors are not there the marching band conductors (senior students) run the class instead of calling in a sub. Basically, they just ask everyone what pep song we want to play and we do that. I'm wondering if any other band does this because after reading your comment I realized that most bands probably get subs...

Yes I can relate. I am in band and because I am blind doing my homework and other assignments does take a while. So I often times I do get behind in classes but end up making up the work whenever I get a chance. And I have teachers who are very accommodating but yes band really does take up a lot of your time. But most people in band do it because we like making music and we enjoy it. I can’t speak for everyone though

Former drum major here..... I'm 42 now and there's actually one of my old shows from 1996-1997 on TH-cam....... but for real, hard core band nerds NEVER let spit on our shoes bother us...... it was a way of life. I actually still have passes from other classes to the Band Room in my memory book from my Senior Year. My Senior year, 3 of 4 classes were band for the first half of the year and 4 of 4 for the last half. My college minor was music (I was pre-med) and was sporting a music scholarship. I was a Colossal Band NERD and loved every second of it. We were a family and my closest relationships were with other band members. Most of us stay close to this day. I would not change one thing about being a "Band Nerd". I wore, and still wear, that title like a badge.

I have after school band Tuesday through Friday every week and ussaly also have stuff on Saturday every other week and my teachers wonder why I’m behind when they assign 3 hours worth of homework every day

Yes I can relate. I am in band and because I am blind doing my homework and other assignments does take a while. So I often times I do get behind in classes but end up making up the work whenever I get a chance. And I have teachers who are very accommodating but yes band really does take up a lot of your time. But most people in band do it because we like making music and we enjoy it. I can’t speak for everyone though
first year in middle school, i had electives... i chose band.... that was my only elective i was aloud to have for the entire year... i don't regret anything! no matter how many pencils i lost when i had to get my flute!

Our high school band's catchphrase one season *was* "Needs more cowbell." There were shirts and everything for it.
We had music that had the cowbell in it, and the percussionist wouldn't give us enough sound, so we would scream at her "NEEDS MORE COWBELL!!!"

I remember watching this video in the fifth grade when I was trying to figure out if I wanted to do it or not. I didn’t understand what a lot of this stuff meant. I am graduating this year, and rewatching this video was like rewatching the last seven years. Thank you for this video. It’s been a heck of a run.

As a clarinet player, I can confirm that we could be holding our instruments with our feet with a trumpet bell stuck in the lower section and still blame the reed when we get called out on it.

We play Sweet Caroline in marching band, so often times, one kid yells, “Sweet Caroline” and everyone else yells “BOM BOM BOMMMM!!!” (Also don’t forget how picky the percussionists get when someone plays the mallets.)

Former drum major here..... I'm 42 now and there's actually one of my old shows from 1996-1997 on TH-cam....... but for real, hard core band nerds NEVER let spit on our shoes bother us...... it was a way of life.
I actually still have passes from other classes to the Band Room in my memory book from my Senior Year. My Senior year, 3 of 4 classes were band for the first half of the year and 4 of 4 for the last half. My college minor was music (I was pre-med) and was sporting a music scholarship. I was a Colossal Band NERD and loved every second of it. We were a family and my closest relationships were with other band members. Most of us stay close to this day.
I would not change one thing about being a "Band Nerd". I wore, and still wear, that title like a badge.
Band kid kind sure has come a long way since..back then…now we’re just tired and more funny.
