    Wanted to preface that we recorded this before you guys, Sushi Squad, let me know that the spank wasn't meant as a perverted thing but more of like a disciplinary one so please ignore my little rant about it xD

      its fine many people think that as well
      the manga draw that part in a goofy way
      the anime make it look a little weird.

    • @amaimon8031

      The spank was meant to be a disciplinary thing, especially that he did that after saying "dont you dare defy me!" and then "punished" aoi for "defying" him with a slap in the butt. That is very normal in asian culture and was meant to show that uzui was letting her off easily with just the slap for defying him. In short, he was being kind.

    In this story, "Entertainment district(Yukaku)" means red light district, which includes both party spaces and brothels.
    There are two types of girls who work in Yukaku: "geisha(artist)" and "yujo(prostitute)".
    The role of the geisha is to provide the art in party time.
    They play the shamisen (Japanese guitar), sing songs, recite poetry, and dance.
    The role of yujo is selling prostitution.
    They are totally different and no one play both.
    And oiran is the top ranker of yujo.
    If you want to tell the difference between a geisha and a yujo, you can do so by looking at the obi(belt) of the kimono.
    If the knot is on the back of the obi, she is a geisha, and if it is on the belly, she is a yujo/oiran.

    The little parade was actually called "Oiran Walk" it's a common practice on the 1900s in the Yoshiwara district where the Oiran, the head of the house does a little walk to the client. The walk is also like a walk of Fame, a chance for the client to brag his wealth to the people that he managed to buy the Oiran (in which it's really hard to convince an Oiran, you need to visit them a lot and you need the Oiran to like you). Also, every hour is like a thousands of dollars already and the Oiran walks so slow so sometimes Oiran purposefully slows it more down so she could gain lots of money meaning that little parade can last an hour and even more.

    • @thebookreader287
      @thebookreader287 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Plus she has the power to choose her client and has the choice to delay or decline sexual offers. For a fictional western counterpart, Satine of Moulin Rouge fits this.

    Just a quick refresher so you guys won't get confused as well for the future episodes, Tanjiro got a powerful sense of smell, Zenitsu's hearing (that's why he's easy to pick up the instrument/shamisen) and Inouske's sense of touch that's why he hates wearing clothes 😉

    • @johnsie20
      @johnsie20 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To add: Zenitsu uses his hearing to read emotions. (Heartbeat) In the manga, he senses people if they are lying. An example is when he hears something in Tanjiro's "box" but trusts Tanjiro because of how he "sounds". Spoiler : Tengen has an affinity to sounds as well but it is more related to his battle sense.

    About Tengen's 3 wives, it was explained that the Uzui family (Tengen's clan) practices polygamy, which means the custom of having more than one spouse at a time. When the male member of the family turns 15, the head of the family chooses three wives for the man, based on their compatibility.

    • @johnsie20
      @johnsie20 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Additional context: They practice polygamy since they need heirs and more clansmen. These ninjas are expendable during wartime. They barely make it to 15 yrs old so they pro create as much as possible.

    The very tall, i guess shoe's, she was wearing requires a very specific style of walking. I actually had a youtube video pop up about this, and it's historically accurate. There were different heights and styles of those shoes also; the ones she is wearing actually had the bottom hollowed out and little bells were put in them to create a ring as she walked.

    Fun Demon Slayer Trivia: Zenitsu Agatsuma is born with super hearing to the point that he can even "hear" other people's heartbeats and feelings (Like Marvel's Daredevil). But he wants to interact with people without prying into other's internal feelings, so he complains and cries a lot to muffle his super hearing.
    His super hearing also allows him to perform expertly on any musical instruments. He loves playing the Tsugaru Shamisen (like in this episode) because Shamisen strings are very loud and stress relieving.

    Geisha isn't Oiran and Oiran isn't Geisha, there are differences. Geisha like you described it, were women who entertain their guests with drink, traditional dances and traditional musics, even political counsels.. BUT, they didn't offer their bodies.. To buy an entertainment of Geisha for one evening was usually very expensive, and the men usually came with guests and not only to be entertained (and show of their wealth by buying a Geisha to his guests) but to discussed about important issues like politics and wars. Geisha nowadays could be found in Kyoto, where the Japanese culture were more preserved there.
    The Entertainment District, Yoshiwara, here was a real district in the past.. A red light district, if you know what I mean.. And the women who entertain the men there, the most prestigious one called Oiran, they did entertain in traditional dance and music too but their real 'job' were entertain in bed.. So Oiran and Geisha somewhat similiar just in the used of traditional playing, but their 'real' job were different.
    And of course there were a lot of women who didn't get the Oiran title, they would usually just straight up prostitute.. No need for Japanese Playing, just straight into the bed thing...

    17:50 Those two "goku" are unrelated. Rengoku's "goku" is 獄, which actually means "prison" (his full name means "purgatory"). The "Kyogoku" house's "goku" is 極, which means "edge/extreme," and the "Kyo" part means the capital, so basically, "top rank in the capital," but by this point in history, it's just a last name and one of the actual old houses in Yoshiwara.
    The Dragonball protagonist is actually "go + kuu," not "goku." (悟空) It means basically "to discern/perceive the (whole) sky," or more metaphorically, "fully enlightened."

    • @CozNothingIsForever
      @CozNothingIsForever 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      purgatory? I've seen rengoku translated as heaven and hell, which fits him more. He's heavenly good but his enemis see him as hellish fire.

    • @Ryan_gogaku
      @Ryan_gogaku 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@CozNothingIsForever I mean... 煉獄 is literally the word that the Catholic Church in Japan uses to describe purgatory--a sort of intermediate afterlife "holding cell" (獄) where those with the hope of redemption are "polished" (煉る) by having them be cleansed or "purged" of their sins with divine fire. It's also his family name, so I don't think that the more poetic translation you saw would quite work for, say, his brother. His first name, Kyojuro (杏寿郎), starts with 杏, which is an apricot that looks bright yellow and red like fire, so you could go with that?

      Since there are many homonyms in Kanji, it is not possible to know their true meaning only from the alphabet. In particular, Japanese has a simpler pronunciation than Chinese, so there are many homonyms.

      Note that Dragonball's Goku's name (and well, the base story) comes from the "Journey to the West", which is a Chinese novel, and his original Chinese name is Sun Wukong, which itself is said to come from the Chinese Buddhist monk Wukong. Goku is only the Japanese reading of that name.

  • @Ryan_gogaku
    @Ryan_gogaku 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    7:40 "Oh wow that looked real." -> Well.... the Yoshiwara Entertainment District was in fact a real place in Tokyo, and it looked very much like that at the beginning of the 1900s, down to amazing detail. For example, the woman statue on the gate as they enter is a replica of the statue that was once there. Long story, but it's the princess/mermaid from the folk legend Urashima Taro. You can actually still see the remains of the gate today, but it's not very impressive anymore since it's become a normal residential district.
    Anyway, Oiran are accurately described. Ashinuke is a real word that means leaving a contract before paying off your debts. The whole thing is recreated with astonishing detail. The only thing that's a little off is the timing. The Taisho Era when Tanjiro and company are living started in 1912, but the Yoshiwara Entertainment district was almost completely destroyed in 1911 by a "mysterious fire," from which it never fully recovered.

    I hope Entertainment District is not one of culture in Japan but I know it's a fact the district was there. 😅
    Geisha and Maiko: I saw them in Kyoto before. They sells their skills, such as singing. dancing and talking in parties. Geisha is elder woman, Maiko is younger.
    Oiran and Yujo: They sells their body. They wear kimono backwards.
    Yoshiwara district was burn by fire, but there are other, only a few area still now.

    The other second seasons first few episodes include scenes that weren’t in the movie prior showing Rengoku’s perspective before he boarded the train

    Rengoku is like the big brother that make all the family proud of him and give him responsibilities because he's dependable, tengen is the big brother that will trash talk his little brothers , but will destroy anyone who try to mess with them

    -Rengoku is the big bro who train the little bro swimming at Pool 😇 and like *"yes that's right keep it up"*
    -Meanwhile tengen is the typical big bro who throw the Lil bro to the ocean and when the Lil bro said " BIG BROO HELLP IM DROWNED" tengen is like *"HOW U DROWNED ? THATS UNFLASHY!1!1"* 😈😈
    And broo i swear after this season u would know tengen and rengoku have the best personality IMO these 2 is 🐐😎😎

    the oiran walk i saw from searching "oiran dochu". I learned it takes about 3 years to master walking in those shoes! Also, the 'why': If i remember right, it was to both show off how much money the man she's picking up has (as to get to this point he'd have spent about $24,000 on her), as well as to save her any embarrassment from going to pick him up.

    So just a historical note...the women depicted in the entertainment district are Oiran, not Geishas. They dress similarly, but note the oiran's obi ties in the front where a geisha's tie in the back. Geisha specialize in arts and culture and later sell themselves to a benefactor which may or may not include a romantic or sexual relationship. Oiran specialize in sex and are basically high end prostitutes, or courtesans. Hence, the sash tying in the front for easier access and removal. The more popular ones would get to do a processional through the district to entice high end buyers and show off their wealth. Geisha and Oiran would bring in tons of income for their respective houses so they'd be trained and invested in at a young age.

    When this was coming out my husband and I looked up the Japanese word that they are translating as "wife" since it's not any of the words you usually hear. But it more closely translated to a very close loyal lifelong servant rather than what we normally think of as a wife.

    The fighting scene is really really amazing ! Exploded my mind!!
    It is building up the level of stairs.
    and watch and listen their talking , u will know more about the background of their age.
    That 's why so many sick and disease , not good medical. And so many sick people couldn't be healed.
    This "Demon Slayer" author is talking a lot of background of it , not just the story.
