  • Check out the new Line 6 Powercab 2X12 FRFR cab. In this review, I cover and demonstrate how it sounds (FRFR Mode, Speaker Emulation Mode & A Custom Preset With IR's) build quality, USB Recording Interface, Stereo Width Feature and I discuss the price and what seperates the Powercab 2x12 from other FRFR units.

    Awesome playing by Jarrod and Paul! I had no idea the power cab has as many uses and benefits as it does. Thank for being thorough, discussing both the homeruns and the areas where the cab perhaps underwhelms. 5 star review.

    Before I sold my victory v30mk2 and matching 212 victory cab with v30's I did a side by side with the power cab using about a billion cables and the V30 speaker emulation is extremely close to an actual cab with V30's. Say what you want but both cabs were sitting right in front of me and they were pretty damn close.

    I totally agree with you and can confirm your experience. I own a Helix and just bought a Powercab 112 Plus. According to the promotion from Line 6 I was expecting the speaker simulations to sound close to real cabinets and bought the Plus version so I can switch between these from Helix depending on presets. I was really disappointed by the integrated speaker simulations because to me they sounded quite dull and much less lively than real cabinets, as for example my marshall cab. I found it also funny that the greenback speaker simulation and the greenback IR that both came preinstalled with the powercab sounded COMPLETELY different. The FRFR part seemed to be the best part of the Powercab but honestly I didn't buy it (especially the plus version) just for leaving it in FRFR all the time. I'll return the Powercab Plus and will probably get a normal FRFR...

    • @TheApsodist
      @TheApsodist 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, did you turn off your cab simulation and use amp only on the helix when using speaker sim on the powercab?
      I'm thinking of buying the powercab but I'm a bit reluctant now as people are saying the speaker emulation sucks. However, if you use it wrongly (not turning off the cab emulation on helix) then yes it will sound strange as you have 2 different cabs modeled together.

  • @SixStringHarmonies

    The Flat Stereo (FRFR) mode is solid. I love the shit out of mine. The speaker emulations are absurd. L6 got lost with that idea. Anyone buying a $2K modeler is going to know better.
    The power/volume is insane, but can go to whisper, still remain clear and doesn't skim treble. I wish it were more friendly to standing up vertically, as I have mine arranged. Or even if the top handle was recessed flat so you can put a rack case on top of the flat surface. It works fine standing vertically, It's just strange having controls on the side.
    One strange note, is that if you have an Axe Fx 3, there is an issue with the PC 212 not taking the AES digital output of the AF3. XLR analog outputs work great. The digital is an issue atm.
    Both companies point to the other, but users have ultimately gleaned that the problem is on the Line 6 PC side. Hopefully firmware will bring a fix.

    • @StringBanger
      @StringBanger 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting because I have the 212+ and I tried cab blocks in flat stereo and also IRs from Own Hammer and a few others and I found that using the speaker mode with a greenback 57 mic set to 1.5" on the left and cream speaker with a ribbon mic at about 3" on the right speaker gave me some incredible amp in the room sounds. I also set the speaker distance to 0%. Using a bodonk amp with an 808 in front. I got a pretty awesome chug metal sound and love it

    Just throwing in my 2 cents. FRFR is a misnomer. If they all are truly FRFR, they would all sound very similar. Checked Mission Engineering, Friedman, and Line 6 websites. They all list the frequency response as full range 70hz ish to 18Khz ish. But none of them indicate how flat they are, as in a plus or minus number. What they should be referred to is full range speakers/amps.

    When you put a mic up to the power cab did you place the mic on axis? Because it's a coaxial speaker if it's on axis you right on top of the tweeter that's in the center of the speaker if it were off axis you'd pic up way more low end.

    FRFR cabinets suck they just do but if you set your modeler up correctly, especially with this type of cabinet, you will get a much more playable tone. I had the mission engineering Gemini 2x 12 cabinet and I have to say it sucked and I thought it was supposed to be the best! The line 6 2x12 plus has a much better tone in my opinion, but don’t use the FRFR setting use it as a standard speaker cabinet and leave the speaker IR out of your signal chain of your modeler, the speaker reacts with the amp in a much more natural way you get that proper feel back………that’s how it works! let’s face it if you’re trusting your ears on TH-cam, they all sound good. It’s the feel that we’re really talking about here.!

      Hello thanks for your question. I would suggest buying two speakers and separating them.
      it sounds a lot better because you get true stereo separation and you can actually hear the notes bouncing around the room and you can tell where they're coming from.
      I will say though, I cannot emphasize enough to not use the speaker emulations. Just use it in FRFR mode. Those emulations are awful.

    • @tomulator
      @tomulator 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TONEWARSgearshow did you try the speaker emulations with the Powercab's mic models added via the XLR direct out? This is a KEY feature that many gigging musicians probably care about. I don't want to mic my Powercab 212 +. I want to plug that XLR directly into FOH and go. With the mic models...how does it sound? Does it cut? What does the distance parameter do to the tone? Realistic? Thx.

    So my take from this video and others that I have seen is that if I wanted go stereo it would sound better to have two 1x12 further apart utilizing an ir either by downloading it into the speaker with a plus or in the helix with the regular 1x12 with the ir in the helix. 1. It's been said that it gives you that "real cab in the room feel", does it do that?
    2. Also, do you think it's capable of being loud enough for a loud ass drummer in a rock cover band?
    3. What would recommend for a very good quality FRFR amp to use if not the Powercab?
