Nintendo's Weirdest Game Boy Advance

  • The Game Boy Player was released in 2003 for the GameCube and it allowed you to play your Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games through the TV. The way Nintendo made this work is pretty interesting since they decided to basically jam the entire GBA system inside the player making the base an actual Game Boy Advance system on the inside.

      That would have been cool, at least we got DS on the EShop for the Wii U but otherwise yeah sad it didn't. But then again emulation was the way to go over hardware to keep costs down (besides having a DS or 3DS of course) I think so makes sense why but would have been cooler, maybe next to the SD Card slot on the front (if space there) and moving the USB ports to the back where the other two are. Can only dream or see if someone mods a Wii U to have it (and working around the functionality for DS mode or something).

      Ironically, framerate and resolution are "fine", it's the low bitrate that really kills it. Watch a GBAV cart sometime, you'll be surprised at how watchable it actually is. Still though, agreed, why would anyone want to pirate movies via this method. Even Video CD is leagues above GBAV.

    • @Dave01Rhodes
      @Dave01Rhodes ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can do it with GameBoy Interface. The GB Video carts look for specific GB Player features and reject the Player that way. GBI can turn those features off and the GB Video cart has no idea it’s running in the Player.
      So you can watch Shrek and Shark Tale in their low res crunchy versions on the big screen.

    Still have my GBP and Startup Disc. And, no, not at all surprised to hear it's an actual GBA inside because that's exactly how it acted. Not only did Nintendo's own manuals tell you to think of it as just another GBA when linking to other systems, but it also handled GB/C games in exactly the same way that the GBA did. Button combinations to change color palettes and shoulder buttons for optional screen stretching, all that jazz.

    People tend to separate the disc from the hardware. So they can charge rediculious prices for the disc knowing that you need it. This is done sometimes with the wavebird wireless GC controller. They separate the receiver from the controller. Then they can charge more for the wireless adapter. If that isn't the case there are alot of careless people who have lost alot of wireless adapters.

    I definitely did have a Game Boy Advance, though, it was awesome being able to take my Pokémon games, or whatever else I was playing, with me anywhere, then come home and play it on my TV! It was basically the Switch before the Switch, though you could say that about the Super Game Boy as well, but the GB Player went even further, not only including Link Cable support, but having special features like rumble added for Drill Dozer and Superstar Saga.
    And yes, I have also hooked together two GameCubes, one running Wind Waker, the other running the Game Boy Player, with the GBA to GC Link Cable, and used entire TV as a Tingle Tuner

    I got it when it came out. I loved it then and I have no complaints now. Even though I play my SP for most of those. If you were reckless you allowed yourself to loose the disc or even scratch it up. Great video none the less!

    I got the gba player for 20 without the disc and just put the boot up on a memory card works perfect .

    I'm glad I was able to finally get my hands on one a few years ago! I actually got both the player and the disc for $40! It still works today and I occasionally play whatever GBA games I have on me.

    I wish Nintendo would release something similar for the 3DS on the Switch. This would be amazing for content creators who wish to make videos on 3DS games.

    FYI you don’t need the start up disc a few game will boot it. The only ones I know of are Wind Waker and some BMX game. You just put a game in the GB player while the system is turned off the put the disc in and start it like normal and once it get to the main title it will change over to the GB player. Those start up discs go for about 150-200 and not a lot of people know you don’t really need it.

    I was lucky enough to get a GBA player and the disc in it's original case for $35 at a used game store about 6-7 years ago. Man it's super nice. I used it with Zelda and a GBA and it's cable adapter

    I have 5 game cubes and 4 of those came with the GBA player at a used game store. Ended up buying the disc with one of them.

    I actually bought and installed a tv output for the GBA before this thing came out. It just slipped another ribbon cable over the one that connects the screen and provided A/V out. I loved some of those games so much (hello every single Metroidvania for a while) but hated playing on a handheld. It's weird that you mention Pokemon, I played that game handheld and didn't mind it so much. Much more important for the aforementioned Metroidvanias and what not.

    Man I got super lucky. Someone sold their Gameboy Player with the start up disc for $12 a couple years ago and I got it! I still want to try the Homebrew method though for the start up disc, but the GameCube seems complicated to mod...

      FSA is already a gamecube game, you probably mean four swords?

    • @idontknowyouguys
      @idontknowyouguys 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IAmNotASandwich453 no I mean four sword adventures. I put four swords adventures in one cube hooked up to the largest tv in the house and then I use the other four gamecubes, with gba players, each connected to their own monitor and acting as gbas to play with my friends.
      -edit-
      We also play the gba foursword game as well, but that only needs four cubes.
      -Edit 2-
      Good question. Sorry for all the edits. At work, intermittent downtime’s.

    There is a lot of uses for it now, like if you want to capture video of GBA/GBC/GB gameplay for videos, but back then, there is something to think about.
    Primarily, the first thing I can think about is Pokemon transfers from the GBA games to the Gamecube games (Colloseum). It's also probably easier to play GBA games if you don't own the system. The GCN was able to connect to the GBA for certain games and work as a controller, like Zelda: Four Swords Adventure, and Windwaker. I wish that a similar adapter could have happened with the Nintendo DS, and you could play games like Mario Kart DS on the TV. Sadly, this feature was digital only for the Wii U, and only select games were available with this feature. Would have wanted to play Diddy Kong Racing.

    Nice to see the insides.... I have 3 GameCubes, they all have the GB play attached. I have a Silver one...an Orange one an a black one... I never owned the disc... I got my black one from a goodwill, with the Gameboy player and the disc, they were asking $45... I grabbed it, the GameCube does not work but, the disc and the GB player works fine... So seeing how I paid $45, I got a good deal !

    This is some crazy timing lol. I just bought a gameboy player from ebay, no disk though, I'm planing on using the gameboy interface and modding my gamecube so I can play gba games on my tv. Having gamecube games as well, I will consider that a nice little bonus lol.

    Sounds like the Game Boy Micro might be even more 'in the shadows' than the Game Boy Player considering it didn't even get a mention in the intro!
