    Just got this piece...love it. The dial punches well above its weight class. 38 mm is the sweet spot for an everyday piece.

    I'm honestly sick of people complaining about Seiko raising their prices. We've been spoiled by getting ridiculous value for years. If a Swiss brand released a watch with these aesthetics, specs, with an in house movement all for $700 then people would be gushing about how amazing of a value it is. Seems like a bit of a double standard to me. (The Tissot Gentleman Silicium is a great example of this.)

    I jumped on the grey/black version as soon as I could find one in stock. Bought mine from Carat & Co. for $700. It's EXACTLY what I've been wanting. The case shape/size with that more simple dial pushes all the right buttons for me. Currently got it on a black and grey striped NATO and it's a knockout! Over the last 12 days, it was averaging about +1.5 seconds a day. First time owning a 6R35 movement and I'm an instant fan.

    • @KentuckyMan30
      @KentuckyMan30 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steven3379 The date window is still a darker black than the dial, but it's honestly not something I even notice. I really love the hands and indices on my version! If you click on my channel, the latest video I made was on the version I bought. I think the reference numbers are different in the US than in Japan.

      Yeah, that would be my choice. Does the fact the lume in the hands is a different shade than the numerals and hour markers bother you at it all? Or is it not noticeable in real life? I find it a tiny be jarring in photos that the lume in the hands is very white, while the numbers and markers looked a bit more off white or cream.

    I have this watch and also the OG SARB017, I must prefer this one. The domed AR crystal really made a difference in legibility and the dial is way more striking. I have not been this happy and satisfied in a while after buying a watch.

    When I first bought 38 mm watch I regretted because of how small it seemed at the time (I am 6.3/220) . Later I had 43 and 44 mm watches but I always go back to my smaller size Seiko for no apparent reason . I just love it .

  • @AhmadThabet-qw1kc

    Excellent watch that acts both as dress or dive watch. The size of 38 mm dial is ideal, having Sapphire Crystal, screw down crown, 200 m WR & Seiko 6R-35 movement is perfect for every day use.

    Finally decided to pull the trigger on this one today so I'm selling my Hamilton KFA 38mm and my Sarb017. This will take the place of both in my collection. My only gripe is that they could have luted the numbers and arrow markers and kept them the same color. Seems like a missed opportunity, but I"m still excited to get it.

    Although I would love to have seen the gold markers/numbers lumed instead, I think this is a great release by Seiko. It's pushing the small side for my tastes, but agree a field watch probably shouldn't be as big as some other styles (I have a 7.25" wrist for comparison). The gray one on this same bracelet would really have a "Seiko Explorer" vibe to it. I have my SPB089 on a Strapcode Super-O, and just love it with that combo.

    the only thing i would fault the alpinist line, is that the case is polished. really wished it to have a fine brushed finishing, it is a field watch after all. have the new alpinist version, the white and the black dial ones, and will get the new 38 black dial as well

    • @dustycups
      @dustycups 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would prefer brushing as well but I think the ‘field watch’ thing for the Alpinist is overhyped a bit. Other than seiko’s marketing speak and our philosophical musings about what a field watch dial looks like, it’s essentially just a standard dressy looking automatic watch. Normal shock absorption like any other auto movement, no anti magnetic rating, thick and shiny watch. If we must have a mechanical field watch it should be hand wound, thin, and antimagnetic.

    • @ionutgeanta8741
      @ionutgeanta8741 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @lankymk

    My annoyance with these baby alpinist is, yes it's cheaper (about £50 from RRP) but it's certainly cheaper to make for Seiko just by dropping the crown guards, extra crown and internal bezel BUT..... dropping the applied indices is the killer for me.
    They are one of the highlights of the alpinist and I feel the baby alpinist should have them too, atleast that's my opinion on the matter.

    • @vaclav_fejt
      @vaclav_fejt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've only discovered this line (and I vastly prefer the "baby" without the compass), so I'm not that demanding on the tradition, however, if they replaced applied indeces for painted ones, they could have used luminous paint. It's not a purebred dress watch, after all.

    The date wheel being a different color wasn’t an issue on the SARB Alpinist because it matched the color on the compass bezel.
    Whether you want a compass bezel or not is a personal preference, but since the SARB Alpinist can still be bought on US Amazon for less, I’m not feeling any of the new Alpinists (except for the black dial) right now.

People always rave about Seiko lume and although it was good, after comparing it with a couple microbrand watches I was not really blown away. Again the lume on these I think is impressive enough but of course it won’t be as strong when compared to large lume plots on a diver.

      I understand the frustration around the recent creep in prices from Seiko, but it all boils down to perspective (for me, at least). My "grail" watch would likely be a Rolex Explorer 1 (36mm). At $5,000-$6,000, I won't be getting one anytime soon (for years and years at least). I think I could probably come up with the money within the next year or so, but even then, with a family of 4, it would be extremely hard for me to justify spending that kind of money on a watch when there are plenty of things it could be going towards (investing, college funds, etc). That being said, here I have an alternative that is essentially giving me what I want out of an Explorer for *only* $700. Oyster style case, 38mm case size, sapphire crystal, 200m water resistance (better than the Explorer I believe), a solid movement that is currently giving me an average of +1.5 sec. a day (over the last 12 days on wrist) and a dial and hands that (dare I say it) I probably like more than the Explorer. It pretty much happens to be a watch that has the characteristics I love so much about the Rolex, but at a price and value that (at this stage in my life) makes sense. Even though the new Alpinist line isn't as good of a value as it once was, to me, it's still excellent value overall for what I'm getting.

    I really, really wanted to love these. I had an 017 but sold it because the strapcode bracelet and the internal bezel annoyed me. This is *so* close, but the single domed (and seemingly no AR) crystal is killing it for me.

      Agree with the above comment, there is AR on the inner side, clearly stated on Seikos website, I also see no reason you’d think it doesn’t have it? And the single dome is one of the draws for me but each to their own.

      Ben Jamin i would put that down to the video, I’ve seen these in person and did upload a video too and the AR is great in my eyes. I really love the reflections and slight distortion the single dome gives off. I would try to see one in person before making your mind up. Especially if you were looking forward to the release.

    For those viewers who wanted the compass to disappear are missing the purpose of the Alpinist watch which was originally built for exploring/mountaineering. The compass is a working compass based upon the location of the sun in the sky and time of day. In my opinion, this new so called alpinist is not a true alpinist.

    • @henrygalindo4479
      @henrygalindo4479 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s also too expensive for what improvements you get from the sarb017. The indices aren’t applied like the sarb and it doesn’t have the alpinist name and mountain logo. The only so called “improvements” are the 70-hour power reserve and sapphire crystal. Not enough for the higher price.

    • @pregardt
      @pregardt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can use any 3 handed watch as compass. The no compass bezel spb 155 is an Alpinist too. The compas bezel Alpinist is not the original Alpinist. Actually the first one had no compass at all. (The Vintage Seiko Laurel Alpinist)

      My point is they "downgraded" the watch by trying to offer something different. Seiko got lazy and just got rid of the compass and applied indices and slapped on a high price tag on it. I understand removing the compass makes some people happy, but taking away the applied indices was a big no no. And btw, as bad as the compass is on the alpinist, i use it everyday and find it very useful. It does its job and i prefer to have it there. Would make much more sense if the price for this particular version was lower.
