I always appreciate when you make your builds "realistic" for real life: fences around pools, lights have to be hanging from actual ceilings, etc. It's The Sims so it doesn't technically have to follow any "laws", but I do really like that you make a point for it to seem more realistic 👍

I don't think we have a fence law for pools where I live because no one has fences for their pools here. It actually seems weird to me to have a fence on one but only the people that have a lot of money here have pools anyway. My city is on lake Michigan so everyone goes to the beach. Point is, for anyone wanting to not have a fence on a pool, it's actually realistic. It just depends on where you live.

Yep, such a weird name that no one can remember. It's like when they called the pet pack "cats and dogs" 😑 took forever to get used to that.
I really wish we could have a counter/cabinet swatch that doubled as door to a garbage bin or an under the counter bin in general. Many modern homes have that and it would save space in homes! I always build my kitchens and then I have to go back and squeeze in/find a natural spot for a bin and it’s always frustrating.

For James:
*THE ULTIMATE SIMS BUILD CHALLENGE*
Rules: You must build a house for 8 sims, it can not end up looking like a box (or rectangle) and must include at least one toddler room, one child room, and one teen oriented room (use your imagination as to what that entails as far as decorations and uses are concerned). Each of those *must* be separate rooms. Your build has a total budget of $100,000-$300,000 simoleons (it must cost a minimum of $100,00 but cannot exceed $300,000) This does not include the cost of the lot which can be over budget if desired (as in the build ends up being $300,000 but the lot puts it closer to say $320,000 or something).
Before starting the build, you must decide which packs you will use. You are allowed to use the base game and ONE expansion pack, ONE game pack, and TWO stuff packs. All of which must be chosen through a random generator.
For each room you must spin a wheel to determine what colour to use. You may only use that colour for the entirety of the room (with the exception of bathroom or kitchen material that do not exist in said colour at which point you may use the colour you feel is closest. And doors/windows may be of normal colour and are excluded from the rules of the colour portion of this challenge). You may *not* use the colours White, Black, or Brown on the inside of the house (except as mentioned above; doors and windows).
When the colour is chosen every item in that room must be made either entirely by or the majority of it is that specific colour.
**If you end up using the laundry day pack you must include a laundry room and out door wash bucket and clothes line
**If using seasons you must include a garden, fireplace, and thermostat
**If using vampires, at least one coffin must be included and the build must have a basement or attic it can be placed in
**If using island living you must place the build by a body of water
**If using cats and dogs the build must be pet friendly and include items for both cats and dogs (if drawn you can build a house for six sims instead of eight)
**If using movie hangout a space must be allotted for an indoor or outdoor movie theatre with a screen and enough chairs for the sims living in the house (so 8)
You have to have a bin in the kitchen as well (don’t forget the bin).
Hope you see this, I think this could be really fun while simultaneously challenging!!

You can also build exterior things like a gazebo or exterior building separate from the main build you just can't build onto the main shell but you can use fences and such to make patios, balconies and yards is my understanding also if there were walls on the inside you also can't touch those.
The most confusing bit is you are allowed to change the wall height (just not to half walls) which involves having to actually touch the walls... and Kayla always loves to tell us that the One Rule is that you can't touch the walls. LOL
Growing up we never had an indoor bin. Now that I'm an adult with my own house I made sure I have an indoor bin. But I almost always forget it in my builds.
(Dad was a pest controller when I was very little and insisted indoor bins encourage pests to come into the home.)

haha we never had indoor trash cans either! our mom is a huge neat-freak and thought they always got too gross. we reused plastic bags + had larger trash cans outside and burned our garbage. I moved out last year, started using the trash cans, then gave up... 😂
Indoor bins are fine if you clear them out once a day. If anything, having to go outside all the time is worse. If you have to go outside at night to throw dinner away, and leave the front door wide open, what do you think is going to happen?
One time, I had to leave the house at night, as soon as I opened the front door, a huntsman spider came running into the house, almost as if he'd been waiting on the other side.
@@birdiemcchicken1471 once a day! Just get a bin with a lid on. Though its cooler weather here. Still, don't want raw meat hanging about in there.
Use with good bin liners, clean with bleach every now and again, spray on for lid and outside, proper stuff for inside. In the warm days you can take it outside and hosepipe it.
It rains way too much here & too cold to go outside to the bins! Kinda gross to take your plates out imho.
Best way to avoid pests is opening the doors less here, and avoiding damp & fabric, & hoovering regularly. Rats will try to get in regardless for your fresh food too, so access is the big thing. Bigger mammals will come in from curiosity or the warmth.
I think everyone's milage will vary based on local pests, climate, and living situation.

I live in the US and we call them Butler's Pantry also.
Here in the UK we normally call it a utility room (but usually that's if its also got the washing machine and drier in there). A pantry is normally just shelves for food which doesn't need to be kept in the fridge and tends to only have the one door - its basically a cupboard big enough to walk into. Never heard the term Butler's Pantry before for a regular house. And there's nothing to polish the silverware lol so I wouldn't have thought of it being for a Butler at all.

In the past week, I created and shared a bed & breakfast to the Gallery. A cute stone cabin bed & breakfast. Thinking of creating a larger one so the kitchen can be bigger.
Either I can't remember or you, James, haven't done one yet for Sims 4, a bed & breakfast. I'd love to see one from you.

I also have a build on Gallery that I'm needing others who have Seasons to test before I finish it. It'll say *Testers Needed*. I did something with the roof and awning thing and since I don't have Seasons, I don't know for sure if snow would get inside the roofed area or only just under the awning thing. Sims 3 always gave me suprise snow indoors, so I wonder how it goes for Sims 4.

Hey James, I do this renovation work of all the base game builds when I play my game, even adding additional characters. I periodically go to individual households to keep the game play going due to after your first Sim's die there is like no-one in the world but ghosts. I think this is an awesome challenge. It makes you think outside the box.

I know it’s all over the comments already, but I’ll add my welcome back, so glad you’re feeling good again and got to visit with your BFF and his lovely girl! It’s fun playing tour guide to first time visitors-you kind of fall in love with your home all over again as you appreciate and see it through fresh eyes! There are several desert friendly vines that are various shades of green, they are just different types of water smart plants! I love the different textures on the exterior, and the slip of a skylight. This was a great mixture of your love of black&white mixed with enough spots of warmth while staying true to the modern design that resulted in a “home” feel (as opposed to a cold as yet unlived in house, if that makes sense?).

Tiny Living is absolutely one of my favorite packs. I love the build and buy stuff, but more than that, it really inspired me to build a bunch of tiny homes. I do believe it’s very much a builder’s pack, though. The gameplay is more subtle. Though I love all the benefits of a tiny home in gameplay.

I love that being a fellow Sydneysider, that I can actually see myself living in your builds as they just feel like home, a freaking fancy home, but home. So many builds have decisions I don't understand (great big rug in the kitchen for example) or are so unrealistic, but yours are so great.

The shell challenge is practically the definition of interior design. Anyone can be a decorator, and decorating styles are subjective. However making a functioning flowing interior with the given shell is interior design, and isn't subjective. Making it work is like solving a puzzle, and it takes a lot of time. It's nice to see youtube sims builders problem solve like this

Seen only half so far but damn, we have the exact same style of building and furnishing and colours. It is almost like I have watched your videos for years and taken inspiration... But seriously. My favourite colours to build with are black, white, brown and green. Sometimes teal and orange too. and I love using those kitchen counters and those industrial looking lights and furnitures. Aghhhh!
Seen everything now, agree with everything. I would however spend more time adding clutter and storage for that extra realism. Like a shelf over the toilet and extra towels hanging everywhere. Maybe some laundry detergent in the laundry room and ya know, more stuff really.
