    "I've tried nothing, everything works."
As someone with depression, that line rings so true to me. There are tons of ways I've been told I can help myself: go to the gym, change my diet, mindfulness training, meditation, thought reframing. Yet I have such little motivation for anything. That's exactly how I feel about life: lots of ways to help myself, but I lack the motivation to try it or the willpower to see things through.

      Jon
I know there is no cure all for depression and all that but personally as someone who has their fair share of it, I'm still very fortunate that I have areas of life to escape to where I'm largely free from that source of suffering.
Hobbies that allow you to get into flow states (kinda tricky at times) are mainly what I'm referring to.
Also finding a good physical environment plays a role too.
Sorry if this comes across as prescriptive. I have no intentions of telling anyone what to do but only describing what helps me ✌️

Finally a breakdown of this song that isn’t romanticizing suicide. From the first listen I immediately identified that the song was never meant to romanticize but to break down the thought process of suicidal ideation, loneliness and the way people isolate themselves. It’s easy to close off the world and feel invisible when the world at large abandons mentally ill people. There’s so many insanely deep and beautiful songs by them that are overlooked because they come off as edgy and pure shock value. Once you’re accustomed to the harsh nature, you unlock incredibly dense, introspective pieces of artwork that reflect all the grey areas of life and complexity of humans. Thank you so much for this video.
This song saved my life actually. Permanently changed my perspective on suicide. I still struggle daily with suicidal thoughts and On GP is my bluebird. I always turn to it and the other track “Dilemma” when I feel I’m at rock bottom and ready to cave into my destructive tendencies.
    Death Grips forever!!!!!!

wow it takes a lot guts to do what you did. I am also glad that you were able to make the leap and hit the nail on the head with your analysis. Trust me, as a clinician I see a ton of people that suffer from all of the above and how people today are so lonely and by themselves. And, yes again, the isolation affects the mentally ill the most, leading to all kinds of mental health problems. I never took the shock value or edginess seriously as I wanted to look at it from those that follow the band and the band itself by breaking down the lyrics. Thank you for enjoying it so much and I am sure the band would be very pleased, how this song saved your life. Glad it changed your perspective and my final comment is don't give up and hang in there. Wishing you all the best.

I highly recommend you go to a Death Grips concert. when I went, for the first 30 minutes the stage was pitch black, but MC ride had some kind of laser-pointer gloves, and Zach had lazers shooting out of the tip of his sticks. just a black void and a human powered light show
They also came out on stage, played their set, and walked off stage. No crowd work, no "thanks for coming out tonight" , no interaction with the audience at all. they truly embody the concept of letting the art speak for itself, and being true to their introverted selves
and of course the energy was like no other show ive seen, and probably the loudest show ive been to.

You seriously did your research here. Very, very well done analysis. I also want to mention in the line where Stefan says,
"I live down the street from you
Noticed me, I've never seen you
Wonder what the f I do
Listen up, you nosy b, listen close
My most recent purchase, old black rope
Gonna learn how to tie it, hang it in my chamber
Perfect reminder, occult I'm made of
Come try it out whenever you wanna."
He's also telling fans to back off from his personal life and to just let him be. All the members of Death Grips keeps their lives extremely private, so this makes sense. I also really like your interpretation of that line, though. I never thought about it that way.

I went to a show in May of this year. Even after standing in the same spot for literal hours, and a few bizarre false starts, they simply showed up, said nothing, sat down, and began to play. Despite the cacophony coming from the stage everyone around me was physically drawn towards the sound, and we all found ourselves in this sort of pure frenzy. 10/10 would go again.

from death heated if i remember correctly. great song.
i personally believe its about hedonism and mindless destructive pleasure seeking.
there's the allusion to masturbation in the first 2 lines, then the third indicates smoking. cigarettes or weed or other narcotics.
and finally 'i am the beast i worship', calling himself a beast and kind of looking down on himself, but still worshipping, putting himself above and before everything even though he doesn't think too highly of himself.

I went to one of their concerts. It was just as you described them, very minimalistic. They came on stage, Stefan took his shirt off, mumbled a quick "hello" and just got right into the music. Its also interesting how so much of what we do is life is based on stuff that no one really cares about or matters. From my Instagram post shortly after I saw them a second time:
Death Grips was one of the craziest concerts I've ever been to, and honestly I'm humbled by how amazing the people who attended were. During the show, the entire first floor was basically violent anarchy; shoving, moshing, walls of Death, typical stuff for shows. As wild as the crowd was, there was a huge sense of brotherhood and everyone took care of each other. Get pushed too hard and fall on the floor? Someone made sure to hold people around you back so you could get up and not be trampled. As soon as the music had ended, immediately everyone started holding lost items in the air to return to their owners. Shoes, wallets, hats, glasses, you name it. To those that attended the show, please stay legend.
There is nothing in my lifetime I've ever experienced like a DG show. I have seen them 3 times now and I wish I could do it every night. Death Grips honestly changed my life.

Live shows are insane. They had this one show on the most humid day of the summer. Came out an hour and half late while the entire audience was packed inside the venue with 2 two giant heat fans on the stage running the entire time. I remember yawning as I waited for the them to come out. The second they stepped on stage the energy shifted in the room. It's like everyone got shocked awake. I spent the entire first song pushing and getting pushed dead-center in the pit. After the show I looked like I had jumped in a pool. Energy and adrenaline was still on max though. Favorite concert I've ever been to.

I've seen DG 8 times by this point and I have to say that their shows are not only the most visceral performances I've ever witnessed, but also one of the most surreal. If you are in the main crowd of the audience you will experience a wave of bodys going through the same emotional release you see DG giving when viewing them from viewing areas. Watching them is like watching a man pull the demons out from his soul and finding a sense of relief when the pain is over. The same can be said of the audience participating in the same act in the pit. For the length of the show you feel the anxiety, stress, and paranoia build up and with the visceral act of being in the pit you find release. Witnessing their act you see this in the band themselves. They do not do any banter between each other or even introduce themselves. The do their ritual, find their release, and leave freer men than when they entered the stage.
Greatest shows I've ever been to.

The Death Grips concert was the first punk show I went to where I was swept up from the ground as quickly as I slipped and fell. The crowd's as chaotic as an ant colony that got so emotionally liberated it figured out how to dance and combine their bodies into a large blob. I felt like everyone around me was just as disillusioned by the world as I am and that I'll dance safely because of that solidarity. I didn't realize how important that show was to me until recently as I dive deeper into their discography and reminisce about being peripherally into them for too long. I'd be lying if I told you I anticipated Death Grips helping me get through this pandemic.

I think you really nailed it with this analysis.
I've seen Death Grips live twice now and the energy at their shows is truly something special. It is absolutely mesmerizing to see them do their thing on stage and the entire audience was completely on board, I saw maybe 2 phones go up during the entire show which is very rare these days. You really get the sense that seeing Death Grips live means a lot more to the people attending than just watching their favorite band perform.
I would also love to see you breakdown their song "Beware" which is the opening track on their first album "Exmilitary".
I believe it to be the closest thing to their "mission statement" if you could call it that. It starts with a short audio clip of Charles Manson being interviewed, talking about living life as an outlaw outside of the restraints of society. The chorus reads:
"I close my eyes and seize it
I clench my fists and beat it
I light my torch and burn it
I am the beast I worship"
In my opinion, these lines perfectly encapsulate the core philosophy of the band: Unapologetically being yourself.

The first concert I ever went to by myself was Death Grips at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit back in 2015. It was organized chaos the entire time. They showed up 3 hours late and once they let people in the venue, it was packed. After a 45 minute wait they came on the stage and everyone in the back rushed forward, crushing everyone in the front. There was no use in struggling to move around or for space; wherever the crowd went, you went with it. It was very hot and sweaty. I almost lost my glasses into the 2nd song so I made my way to the middle of the venue where everyone was moshing. First pit I ever went in, I was moshing and got hit so hard I got the wind knocked out of me and my glasses flew off. Someone eventually helped me find them and I ran all the way to the back to throw my guts up. Some random ass stranger patted me on the back. Some dude also jumped from the balcony into the pit and broke his leg. Would totally recommend going to a concert if you’re able to; it’s a life changing experience filled with absolute primal and barbaric energy. Even though I didn’t know anyone, it’s like we were all a huge family.

I went to one of their concerts earlier this year. It was honestly more of a blur than a steady image to picture. The music was ear splitting and heavy, there was flashes of light and darkness, I was surrounded by a moshpit, and it felt like you didn't really have an expectation to sit down and observe their performance. The music was too loud to really appreciate, but there was more of a vibe to simply keep headbanging until your neck felt detached from your body, and everyone around you was driven into this same vibe, and I believe we were all there too simply let ourselves go. I don't think the objective was for the audience to watch their performance (not to say they don't put effort into their live performances), but I felt as if we were there to release that energy we've built up from listening to their music, and we all had this subconscious duty to exempt ourselves from our day to day lives for the one hour the concert lasted.

I think that you captured the concept perspective perfectly. I like how you wrote that it was more of a blur then a steady image to picture. It sounds as if every sense is on overload and that the ultimate goal is to let yourself go and go to a different place in your mind. I also like how you mentioned the vibe that everyone is feeling at the same time and that the goal seems to be able to let yourself go and get away from the mundane to reach a different side of yourself. You did a great job describing the show for me thank you.

It is so refreshing to find somebody who is able to approach art with patience and an open mind. As someone who has been a fan of Death Grips for years now, as someone who has talked about the band with lots people, it feels like such a huge validation to have you - someone who, I presume, became acquainted with the band while doing research for the video - pick up on same details and interpret the same lyrics the same way I did. I've been listening to all sorts of fringe music since I was 10 and let me tell you, people who are able to "get it" the same way you do without being used to it are few and far between, which is sad because I think you just proved that all it really takes is the willingness to listen.

Wow thank you for that great reply. You are correct in how we found out about the band. We had people comment and ask us to cover one of their songs and to just check them out. We tend to be open minded about music and things in general so this was a no brainer for us. Just for yourself who I am sure is a lot younger then me, use this thinking in your own life as well. Always stay open minded and continue to listen to fringe music and anything else that you enjoy doing. Our attitude is that if its interesting we are going to look at it. I realize the mindset is to look at the lyrics and the stage performance and faint and have a heart attack but I look at the music as the bands way of expressing themselves from what they see around them. Clearly people and a lot of people at that enjoy the music and seeing them live. They clearly have their message and they stick to it, so more power to them. Thanks for being a subscriber and yes I am now a fan.

The music was a backdrop for whatever people decided to put into the space. At one point the whole crowd was flowing sideways like the floor was warping under everyone. This song means a lot to me, and i thought you gave a fantastic analysis! Towards the end of the track, some lyrics are:
"All the nights I don't die for you
Wouldn't believe how many nights I ain't died for you on GP
Not that I care, I'd be a liar if I sat here claiming I'd exit in a minute
    But I can't say I wouldn't I have my limits"
These lyrics hit me hard, and im sure plenty of other people as well. It reminds me of the desire not to exist. You dont want to abandon others, but you dont want to exist... Its like being in a limbo where everything feels pointless, and you're sticking it out, but you consistently think about ending it nonetheless. You know you wont do it now, but the idea is still in your head, festering.

Great video. I like how these videos analyze the songs while also giving solid life advice and philosophy. I saw Death Grips October 14th, 2018 at a Desert Daze festival in Lake Perris, California. To answer your question: the energy was electric. The audience fed off each other’s excitement as we waited for their set to start, and there was a general giddiness in the minutes prior.
As the music’s playing, under the right circumstances, the crowd is a symbiotic group of thrashing bodies. The music reverberates in your lungs and momentarily, nothing matters except the music and your experience enjoying it. Especially with the friends you have beside you; whether that’s your lover, or the guy you just met but are now friends with after the communal sharing of drugs.

I enjoyed the a lot. I'm a student going further into medicine and the study of psychology among others. Around 2011-2013 era when I was sort of coming of age when I was around 18-19. Both this band, Death Grips, and Tool were huge factors in helping me with that process. For me Death Grips whole discography is a collection of myth like i've learned from Joseph Campbell. Coincidentally, my grandfather gave me Campbell's books and tapes, and It wasn't until Tool re introduced me to Joseph Campbell that I went back and looked even further. These whole things helped me to better integrate my near death experience from a crash I had which ended my pro motocross racing career when I was 19, the resulting medically induced coma, hospitalization, surgery, and then later, sever sever opioid dependency.
It's great you guys are relating this in a way where it can help others integrate these type of experiences and feelings to empower themselves. May want to check out Tool next if I may suggest. Thanks

Their concerts are a really unique experience. I'm a huge music lover so I try to go out to as many shows as possible and have seen everything from jazz bands to death metal bands live and nothing really compares to seeing Death Grips. They came on stage, didn't say a single word, played through their entire setlist without a word inbetween, said thank you, and then walked off stage. But the entire time they were on stage the whole room had an entirely different vibe and the energy of everyone is incomparable.

Thank you so much for this fantastic video. I cannot tell you how much it means to have someone put in the effort to understand this incredible art without setting it aside from the start due to it's extreme nature. I've seen Death Grips live, and I can tell you that the energy is just unreal. They played for about an hour, completely without breaks, each song flowed smoothly into the next, and they took no breaks. The energy in the room was palpable, and not one person in the room stood still for the entire show. At the end, Stefan said "Thank you.", set the mic down, and the trio walked off stage to absolutely outrageous applause. They didn't come back for an encore, and they didn't need to. Thank you for this.

It's definitely notable that they go up on stage all silent, and just unleash a wave of immediate adrenaline and destruction with every performance. that's how it was for my experience. The entire bottom floor of the venue I was in was a mosh pit all the way up to the bar areas, and the closer you got to the front of the crowd, the tighter people were packed, truly like sardines. Some dumbass tried getting on stage and MC Ride gave him the illest kick to the chest I've ever seen in my life. I locked my keys in my car at an afterparty. I think the environment made me dissociate in a way I've never done before. The energy at a show is like a ritual.

I went to a show in 2015. They started with Inanimate Sensation. The entire building bounced. The 15-17 year old internet children (redditors, pitchforkees, etc) ran away from the stage as I swam forward.
Their inner light burns like the sun. It is reflected in the music. The decibels. Their grooves and lyrics entrenched as deep as cavernous mountains. It’s just too intense for people who aren’t on a certain level of acceptance of the expansive capacity of human beings.

I waited through another band's entire set that played before them, Health, so that I could be front row for Death Grips. The second they came on stage the crowds' energy was so insane and the mosh pit that formed in the middle of the sand-filled field was so intense that anyone who wasn't already wearing a face mask had to step out, including me. I went to a show in june and it was insane. I had kind of a panic attack right before they came out on stage, I had never had that before and had no idea what was going on. But when they started playing my anxiety started going away. By this point I was already as sweaty as I should have been by the end of the show, but I gave it all I had. I was in the front row and it was amazing. It felt just as violent as their music sounded when I first started listening to them. When it was over and I was on my way back home, I noticed I had bruises everywhere, and was so tired I felt sick (this was beacause it had been a very hectic few days before the concert too). But boy did I have fun. I got to experience the panic, pain and whatever else, that their music is packed in. I have no regrets, and I had fun.

I went to see death grips at the brooklyn masonic when they sold out there us tour for the powers that b. I've been a fan of DG since Ex-Military and wanted to see them live like my life depended on it. I finally got the chance and boy did they not disappoint. Me and my 2 friends pull up to a crowd of guys and girls our age (23-27) and immediately was greeted with warm hello's and people syked to be around other people who also liked the band. No one seemed contrive or poser-ish which typically with bands like this you get a few. The energy was nuts before we even went in. The tension in the air was intense and you could feel the anxiety. As we walked in we were greeted with a Koi Fish and the Death Grips logo being shined into the back drop of the stage. There was no openers or warm ups just them performing for what seemed like 1h 45m. As we enter in we got merch asap and headed into the crowd. It's dark, it's hot, and it's cramped. I was sweating before they even got on stage. Me and my buddies are standing waiting patiently when all of a sudden the lights black out and the logo goes from green and blue to deep red. Smoke fills the air and the band silently moves into place. A couple suspenseful moments later and the lights flash on and they just start cranking out the music at most likely the loudest they could make it. Such force that the entire room went into pure chaos. Every song felt like that moment from start to finish. At times you would watch in amazement that human beings could perform at redline for so long. Other times you had to wonder how they could even know what the hell is happening because the changes were so drastic. You felt like you were caught in a wave and you couldn't get out, it was just one lyric after another gut wrenching lyric being screamed as if he was dying. MC Ride took zero breaks and drank water like 3 times. Mind you it was sweltering before people even started to move. 50% of the people there by the end were drenched or shirtless. I poured $6 bottles of water on myself just to cool down. I have never in my life experienced anything like a death grips concert. It was pure hell and 10/10 would go again.

I'm here watching this video months into the future and I'm really glad I checked this out.
This past decade I've opened my world to all sorts of different music acts and I'd easily say that Death Grips is right up there with my favorites. I was just getting into high school the year they officially formed and it took only a year for me to check them out. I dismissed them for a while but the energy of their Money Store LP is what really brought me back. Life is way different for me now years later but their music has easily stood the test of time. There aren't many acts who I've listened to as much as I have with them.
With all that said, I hadn't fully understood why I enjoyed them so much. The group really is genre-less, and I hadn't thought about it that way until now. There's no real way for me to describe them to people in a way that fully does their art justice. I'll always find myself excited for anything they release, that kind of comfort in artistic consistency is incredibly refreshing.
I was fortunate enough to catch them at Coachella a couple years back right as they had released Bottomless Pit, they truly do let their music speak for itself. Absolutely no crowd interaction was made between songs, they kept it strictly musical. The crowd didn't mind at all, it was chaotic. Fantastic performance all the way through, they even got everyone pumped by doing their own soundcheck right before the set officially started. One of the most memorable performances I had ever seen.
I don't comment much but I really wanted to put that out there. Excited to see more from this channel. Much love.
