    I had Cig from barracuda I caught off the coast of Cuba. It felt like an Acid trip + diarrhea for 12 hours and I was fine after. The neurological effects lasted for days. Thankfully I fully recovered without requiring hospitalization.

    Really good video!!! Very impressed how you broke it down and kept it scientific. Mahalos for the work you out into it and I have to say it’s very reassuring. Wahanui is also a fish that I have had numerous times without getting sick whatsoever and it’s got a pretty bad rep also. I ate it before I knew about the reputation of Cig. Same applies probably as the Roi situation? Thanks again.

      Jeremy Neill much appreciation for the support, this is gonna be an ongoing study so hopefully we’re able to get more information on it. I know the stigma for Roi is the highest for ciguatera but I’ve heard more cases coming from ulua. But yea we’re planning our part 2 soon.

    My kids and I caught 3 Roi’s yesterday and one of them was about 4lbs. The 4pounder Roi gave us a mean fight to land it. So my diver friend said that any Roi that’s over 3lbs has Cig. well the fact that u guys gave more info and cooking recipes for Roi, we are having it for dinner tonight. Much Mahaloz for da info

    • @FishNGrillz
      @FishNGrillz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Charles Cruz yea from the research we gathered there’s no clear indication of what fish of what size may or may not have signs of ciguatera, from what we found and from other divers ciguatera concentrations is more area based. And even though a fish may have ciguatera there’s a high possibility that it’s only stored in the organs. So yea with Roi it’s more of a reputation then anything. How did the Roi come out?

    I had mild ciguatera once after catching and then frying up and eating a moray eel. This was in subtropical Atlantic waters. I had diarrhea for two days and cold shivers and some muscle pain. No lasting damage, but it taught me to stay clear of apex reef predators, and release them when I catch them. Also, moray isn't good eating anyway, I found. It tends to be very oily and just not a nice texture for fish. Even the taste and flavor was kind of meh.

    I’ve experienced this.. right before covid happened I got it from Eel that I had in my sushi. After only a few hours I had abdominal pain, vomiting every 20 mins, and diarrhea uncontrollably when I vomited. I was brought to the hospital after 6 hours of gastrointestinal issues for fluids due to dehydration. When I got there I was very dizzy, I had blurred vision, and my heart rate was 160 bpm. I was brought into ICU and remained there for 3 days. No one knew what was happening to me until I finally got better and they started asking me what I had eaten before this happened. They finally discovered it was Ciguatera. This was the worst experience of my life. I still have not eaten sushi or seafood since.

    2 and a half years ago I speared a 4.5kg grouper off andros Island in the bahamas.
    I ate it in a group of 6 people. There was a good 2kg of meat on the fish, and the group only ate half. I didn’t want any to go to waste so I ate 1kg. I was only 16 and didn’t know any better.
    During the night i was very thirsty and so went to drink some cold water, and it felt like it was burning the tip of my tongue.
    The morning after I had bad vomiting, diarrhoea, and dizziness. I nearly passed out walking outside to the car to get to hospital. I later found out my heart rate was 30BPM when my average is normally 80!
    The local nurse put me on an IV drip and I stayed on it for the day, throwing up a few more times later.
    For the next few weeks I was extremely weak, and hot water felt cold and cold water felt hot (mainly on my hands and feet). Urinating during these weeks was extremely painful as well.
    After 2 and a half years, I still experience a burning tingling feeling in my hands and feet whenever I am fatigued from lack of sleep or too much alcohol.
    Interestingly, on the 3 occasions I have smoked weed, my tingling symptoms have been made extremely strong. Ever since these one off ingestions of weed, my nerve damage has been much worse.
    What did I learn? NEVER eat 1kg of anything :)))
