I'm impressed how lovingly you share your bounty from the depths with your family unconditionally. Stay as you are. I really enjoy watching your "So Happy" Buddy. You are blessed. Truly, Kathy
Love Kala, grew up eating it because it’s so kid friendly and lots of meat, the old school loves da shoyu Hawaiian chili pepper style. When I was fresh out of high school I moved to country and did a lot of board diving at surf spots, When I shot Kala’s some of my new friends would laugh at it and say “ das rubbish” I cooked it on da grill, put all da meat on a platter and covered it with garlic butter, told da boy’z it was lobster and they loved it, i let them know it was Kala and actually had to show them the Kala skeleton for proof😂 They all praised Kala from that night on.😍🍻
We grew up eating this. In Palauan we call it Chum (pronounced as "Oom") and this was the only fish we never cleaned. Thought it was interesting that the Tahitian name sounds similar to Palauan
Hafa Adai from Guam! 🇬🇺 ‘Grew up with this fish as well. It’s called Tataga’ in the CHamoru Language and a favorite among locals. Thank You for the awesome videos. God Bless!
The horned kala is my dad's favorite fish. I'm blessed and lucky enough to have a girlfriend who spearfishes, and she provides for my family just like you do for yours. Love from Big I!!!!
My daughter is writing a paper on unicorns of all sorts. I came across your video right before hand so we got some fun facts from you. 🥰🥰 thank you so much!! Lyrica say thank you for telling us about the unicorn fish.
The moment you share the food Is always my favourite part of your videos, when everyone starts making that mmmh like you said while eating it's a sound of pure gratitude ❤️ and happiness!
It was only this past March that my chef friend in an Idaho ski resort told me they served Kala sushi at his restaurant. As a regular scuba diver, I was quite surprised to hear this. As my relationship grows stronger to the ocean, this was an inspiring and educational video to watch.
In the small atoll islands of Micronesia we used to wait for a school of Unicorn fish to appear on the flat of the reef then with the help of others we herd them like cattle into a large net. So “ono”. Thanks for the great video 🤙🏼
I feel like my local friends betrayed me lol. They always told me this fish was Ulua when I lived there. Some of my fondest memories were fishing for these off of Mā‘ili Point. Can't think of a better thing I did during my 20's than hanging out with the many friends I made while stationed in the islands.
Kimi, thanks for sharing your culture and knowledge! love the simplicity in this recipe. looks absolutely delicious. can't wait for your cookbook! look forward to what you're up to and putting on the menu next week.
Hi, Kimi, Justin and Buddy! I’m obsessed with your videos! I’ve checked one and I can’t stop ever since! Please keep new videos coming - I’m kinda obsessed haha Thank you so much for sharing! Definitely most fulfilling and inspirational, favorite TH-cam channel!
Hi, from Sydney Australia. Love how you have so many stories to share in your videos, so much passion and richness in culture. Your son is ridiculously cute!
Every time I've ate Kala it's been on the beach on the grill guts in. Generally followed by some uhu stuffed with lup ching and veg covered in mayo. Sooo good.
I love cooking fish I spear like that! I grill snapper whole and it comes out so juicy and amazing, the skin and scales peeled right off. Buddy is just too cute, he looks like a little doll!
omg....after just watching your most recent video and seeing buddy cooking with you and the passing of not your dog :( its really special to see you and your family grow.
Mahalo for sharing your ocean wisdom, passion and more ono eats Kimi ❤️ I love your line "diversity is the key to deliciousness" - yes! 'Collard greens & Kala' Buddy is so cute!! 🌱 😊 🌱 🐟
Pohnpeian called it pwulak and best time to fish for it is during March and April. That's when it's really oily. Our sauce is a mixture of soy sauce, calamanci juice olive oil , diced onions, Pohnpei black pepper and chili peppers.
When I used to work in Waikiki I would spend my off time day camping at kapiolani park I spear one um and BBQ it hangout and miss home. Sometimes the tourists got curious sometimes they were rude. Sometimes a bunch of locals would just join me and I'd go get more fish for the fire and when I got back there would be beer and more food and a tent and I'm part of some family. Now I'm back home in Palau and I kinda miss hawaii
Sure Love this video Kimi, as I do all of the ones you have posted. Brings back memories of small kid time wit Molokai Ohana. Camping, fishing and cooking........Living off of, and Loving da Aina back for providing!!!!! Aloha👍🏽🥃🐟🌴
First of all, your son is adorable! Second, Kala was always my favorite fish. I prefer grilling the kala, shredding it, then slicing up tomatoes and onions, sprinkle a little hawaiian salt, and "Whack Em" as my tutu used to say!!🤙
When I first started diving I would be so stoked to land a Kala. Now that I got a taste of so called better fish like kumu and mu etc., I hate to say but I do snub Kala. I would see 10 lb ones swim in front of my face and not even want it. You made me realize that our roots is what make us. Thanks for opening my eyes. Next time Kala for dinner. Oh, and Buddy is so cute he already likes fish so you might no need dive when you get old, he got you covered on the fish.
thanks, beginning freediving/ spearfishing ( only pole spears here) in Okinawa and being unfamiliar with a good bit of the fish here your videos help a lot
Awesome vid. I’m from SE Asian 🇱🇦 and we eat a lot of our fish like that. Pls schoolers don’t even gut them and love the guts!!! OK now I want some fish 😋
Kala, Puelo, Palani, kole, manpachi, das all we grew up on. Shoyu chili peppa watah. My fada dem nevah used to gut da Kala. Dey used to grill da Kala den Eat the stomach. Old school Plantation style. Miss da good ole days. And yes!!! Kala da poor man lobster. Ono!!!
Hafa Adai and thank you Ms. Kimi, for telling your story of locals from Hawaii consider KALA a traditional fish and how the skin would be used to make drums. For many years I have met locals from Hawaii that considered it to be junk fish and for the life of me I just couldn’t figure how that could be true when the rest of the Islanders all across the Pacific consider this fish to be a prize (my only guess is that I was conversing with those that are not true fishers of the sea) Yes, it is true (as mentioned earlier by other fellow viewers) that on Guam it is known asTATAGA (in the Chamorro language) and we too prize this fish as a whole; meaning that we grill it on an open fire whole and savor the guts as well. I will admit that not all locals will agree but those that do have acquired a distinct palate for the intestines and find it it be a taste that is quite rare to compare to. Again, thanks for sharing and may the good Lord continue to bless you in your fishing adventures and life itself. 🇬🇺
Hafa adai,, love that fish. Very good eats. Popular fish to eat out here on Guam. I grew up eating them. My target species. Good with the coconut palm vineger. We call them “ TATAGA” in my language.. Chamorro favorite. No need to clean. Delicious
Hi Kim your an inspirational and the stories you share my dad loves this fish my dad folks ate the insides we’d catch and threw it on the fire 🔥 the best times growing up thank you Sis much love Aloha and respect to you Happy Holidays to you and ur Ohana
Yes, Pualu is nice rock island as you mentioned it. Love the clams there. While I love that fish also our local forvit also. Thank you sharing. Like your video. Thanks.
Nice. I love kala with butter garlic. We grew up eating it with shoyu chili pepper water. I like both. But raw it’s a mean one. Clean and tender bit crisp. Good video sista
In my experience, collard greens need to be cooked a lot longer than spinach, then it brings out this unique flavor, and there's lots of flavor in the stems if you cook them long enough. It's a great veggie.
You had a great childhood!!
Worth more than all the money in the world.
It was very nice of you to have shared a precious slice of Hawaii. And it all in your backyard and in your🧜🏻♀️ ocean.
I'm impressed how lovingly you share your bounty from the depths with your family unconditionally. Stay as you are. I really enjoy watching your "So Happy" Buddy. You are blessed. Truly, Kathy

On Guam 🇬🇺 we call this Tataga. We eat it the same way, but we eat the stomach as well. Guts and all 👍🏻 this is my favorite!
Right on chelu, stomach is delicious 🤙, good with beer and finadene
Right on che'lu we also eat Bebe!! That's Guam prized fish because it smells like fish but taste like chicken!! 🤤😎🤙🏽🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺
Che’lu I’m crying because they don’t sale that kind of fish here in Oklahoma 😭😭😂 I miss my salt life 💯🤙🏽🇬🇺🇲🇵🤙🏽💯 !!!!!!
Foreal bro. The guts is the best part
Hello from the Marshall islands. One of our favorite fish. Grilled and eaten with breadfruit. 🇲🇭
In the small atoll islands of Micronesia we used to wait for a school of Unicorn fish to appear on the flat of the reef then with the help of others we herd them like cattle into a large net. So “ono”. Thanks for the great video 🤙🏼
