  • Whilst in Bahamas we became very ill with ciguatera, this video documents how we dealt with it! We also mention the symptoms, the long term effects, the manner in how we fell ill. This impacts many cruisers and there was 8 of us who got it in one sitting!!!!!!

    First and only video I have seen where folks actually talk about this. Most mention it in passing, which tells me they know of it but not about it. You have educated myself and my wife. Thanks so much for this.

      It was real... and horrible and educational.

    Whilst we were delighted with the stash of goodies from you guys, it certainly made us stop and think about the fish we were catching and eating. Ciguatera is no joke. Although we had heard of it before, we hadn't known anyone suffer from it until now. It's rough, it completely knocks you out regardless of age, health or fitness level. I couldn't imagine going through what you did with 3 little kids in tow. Thanks for the education and here's hoping you can up the number of beers/mimosas consumed in the near future!

    WOW! Thanks for sharing that. I had never herd of it before and worse, would never know a reef fish from another fish. SO sorry you had to endure that. Very happy you all survived, learnt so much from the experience and shared the knowledge with us. Looking forward to more videos. Thoroughly enjoying being the armchair-sailor from this safe pozzi :-) Bon Voyage!!!

    Was so thrilled to see MV Kariwa " pop up" today! THEN had to learn of our TH-cam friends delema! I'll have a brandy ( or 2 ) with you in my thoughts. Wishing the "Ciguatera 8" fastest recoveries, looking forward to the next episode.

    Thanks for bringing awareness to Ciguatera. I've avoided eating reef fish for years and you just reaffirmed exactly why! I was unaware however of the long term side effects to alcohol, coffee, etc. Glad you are feeling better.👍

    Sounds like Covid-19 is a cakewalk compared to Ciguatera. I had Covid and pneumonia and felt terrible. I spent 6 days in the hospital and it took me over a month to fully recuperate. I'm glad I don't have to worry about what to eat or drink to get a reoccurrence of Covid. I hope all of you are feeling much better now and pray that all of you don't get a nasty reoccurrence of Ciguatera. Also,. hope that you'll be able to enjoy the foods and drinks as you once did.

    Your video popped up this morning. I've followed a large group of sailing vloggers for years. I was aware of ciguatera from watching them catch fish from aboard and spearfishing. Discussions I've viewed are limited and most throw caution to the wind. I didn't know the extreme symptoms and lifelong repercussions if certain items were ingested. What an eye-opening thoughtful presentation. I wish you well in your recovery. Thank you for sharing.
    A second thought, many of the fish you listed in the rolling ticker tape are eaten in the San Blas Islands, Australia and others. Is ciguatera more common in certain ocean areas, like the Bahamas?

    • @MVKariwaN62
      @MVKariwaN62  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s in most tropical and sub tropical regions.

    • @MVKariwaN62
      @MVKariwaN62  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s about the size of the fish also

    30 years ago in the Bahamas a cat was fed questionable fish and the next day if the cat was ok you could eat the fish!

    Can you get like a kit to test the fish for cigutera?

    • @lesliecoles7185
      @lesliecoles7185 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as we know, there is no way to test a fish for ciguatera.

    • @quickjumpingfoxes
      @quickjumpingfoxes ปีที่แล้ว

      A search on the internet asserts that there is no test. Neither can one detect by taste or smell.
