This is an outcry for God's love and forgiveness. You can feel it through the music: this is a sinner who is painfully aware of his shortcomings and cries out to God to cast out the sin and fill him up with the Holy Spirit. You don't need to understand Aramaic to get that just from the melody and the way it is sung.
I keep coming back again and again to this song because I feel the same way, always.

I thought the same thing the first time I heard it. Strange as it may sound, even though the video I watched didn’t spell out what he was singing or the title, I knew that it was Psalm 50 (51) even before I found the one with the translation.

such a lovely and heavenly music reminding us of the great Oriental Traditions of the Church.

    • @arthegor
      @arthegor 7 ปีที่แล้ว

this was one of the main reason the west split from the East. Byzantine Theologists made the dogma, traditions and everything within the church so complex as you see now that back the the Pope and it's bishop did not understood due to the fall of the W Roman Empire and due to the German Emperor placing German Popes and playing a political game with it... this led through a miscommunication and specially that the Eastern Bishops spoke Greek that wasn't a problem in making an complex dogma and so that was the first step of the split, the second was the greed and power grabbin within the church holding the old Pagan title of Pontifex (high priest) and for his greed to be above others just because he had St Peter under his Basilica doesn't make him above others as Jesus said all Apostle are equals even if 1 leads them they are equals as we are all equals when we are given the communion from Bishop to common man. The only most important bishop in the Orthodox church and for the Niceean creed as it was before was the Patriarch of Jerusalem who the 1 st one was the seat of Jesus's relative.

    • @abucapuchin
      @abucapuchin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

well I do agree with you mostly but it is not right to blame completely the western church and the Popes. The western church was more missionary and shared her faith not just in sheer traditions and liturgies rather through her deeds of mercy. We can see how the missionaries reached the poor and the downtrodden in many countries, which the eastern church could not do. Eastern Church even till today clings to her traditions and liturgies rather than engaging herself more concretley in spreading the message of Christ through deeds.

As one commenter pointed out on an other video, this is Psalm 51 (verses 1-5) being recited, not Psalm 53 (But I guess that depends on numbering conventions).
I'm not sure that it is in the Syriac dialect of Aramaic that some commenters have claimed it to be. It is likely one of the Neo-Aramaic dialects like Turoyo or Mlaḥsow.
The Syriac Peshitta has it like this (with my approximate Literal English translation):
    Psalm 51:1
*Raḥam ‘aliy ’Alaha ’ayk ṭaybuwtak wa ’ayk suwga’a’ d-raḥmiyk ‘atiy ḥaṭahiy*
"Have mercy on me, God, according to your steadfast love, and according to your abundant mercy wipe away my sins."
    Psalm 51:2
*’Asga’ ’ašiygeyniy min ‘awliy wa min ḥaṭahiy dakaniy*
"Wash me abundantly from my crimes, and from my sins cleanse me."
    Psalm 51:3
*Meṭel d-skluwtiy yade‘ ’ena’ wa ḥaṭahiy luwqbaliy ’enuwn b-kelzban*
"For of my folly I am knowledgeable, and my sin ever confronts me."
    Pslam 51:4
*Lak b-laḥuwdik ḥaṭahiyt wa biyšta’ qadmyik ‘abdat-sa‘rat, meṭel d-tazadiq b-meltak wa tazka’ b-diyniyk*
"Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and evil before you have I committed, for you are justified in your word and pure in your judgement."
    Pslam 51:5
*Meṭel d-b‘awla’ ’abṭanat wa b-ḥaṭaha’ beṭantaniy ’amiy*
"For in iniquity was I conceived, and in sin did my mother conceive me."

I find most forms of government and organized religion to be ineffective, and most of the time harmful, yet when passion, emotion and dedication are applied in the form of music, regardless of origin, Ive seen it touch and bring people together in harmony from across the globe. So much confusion with this piece due to the mislabelling of the original - Here is what I have found.
Unfortunately the original was miss labelled (Political reason ?).
This is not Psalm 53 or the Lords Prayer in Aramaic.
They are chanting the Christian Orthodox Psalm 50 (Psalm 51 in King James Version).
Chanted in Aramaic, by Archimandrite Seraphim Bit-Haribi and the choir of the Thirteen Holy Assyrian Fathers monastery.
A recital for the Patriarch of Georgia, Ilia II, during the visit by Pope Francis to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, Georgia, 2nd October, 2016.
According to the abundance of thy mercies, blot out my transgressions.
    Uakh sogha drakhmaikh eti khathai
Wash me thorughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
Asga atshigani // meen euli // umen khathai dakani
For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
Mehtol // dsakhlaute yakha ana // wa khtahay luqbaley yinon
Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done what is evil in thy sight:
    Lakh balkhodaikh khteith // ubiishatha
So that You are justified when You speak, And blameless when You judge.
    qdamaikh eichidth
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Mehtol // dtezddaq // bmelthakh utizke bdinaikh
Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being,
    Mehtol // dabaula
And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.
    Ethbatneth wabakhtahe btentani emin
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy kindness:
    Rakhemli Alaha // aakh taibutakh
According to the abundance of thy mercies, blot out my transgressions.
    Uakh sogha drakhmaikh eti khathai

Beautiful....... when I hear the iPhone ring in the beginning it makes me sad to see how disgraceful we can be. A greater respect for the church need to be reestablished. Even the pope had to look.

Even as atheist - you feel the unknown power in this song and energy in the building. When we visited Jerusalem it was the most beautiful place i've been, in terms of energy and spirituality. That place is closest to god i have ever been. If god it love, peace with no conditions - then i am believer.
