Want to speed up a old laptop? well with these simple upgrades, you can boost performance of any old laptop by upgrading to SSD solid state drive and Memory (RAM) and upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Old laptops have mechanical hard drives which run at 5600 RPM which is pretty slow, this laptop I am upgrading only had 4GB of RAM upgraded to 8GB.

Great video Brian. If you want it to run quicker, put a lightweight Linux Distro onto it like Peppermint, Linux Mint or Lubuntu.
I'm watching on a 2007 Sony Vaio which had Vista on it originally. It has a 128 GB SSD, 8GB RAM running the latest Linux Mint 19.2. The boot up time is 25 seconds and shuts off in 10 secs. Runs beautifully, quick and very stable. The Distro includes Libre Office, Gimp which is a Photoshop alternative and all the software you could possibly want, and it's all Open Source. You can't really expect to run the latest games on an old laptop, but for email and web browsing it's ideal. The good thing is, it will not slow down as Windows does with age.

I got a new laptop last Christmas with Win 10 Pro and still had my 7 year old ThinkPad e530 with an I5-3210 CPU. I got a 480 GB Inland SSD from MicroCenter to replace the HDD and upped the Ram to 8 GB because a techie friend of mine some DDR3 RAM he gave me. I also spent $45 on a new third party battery because the original battery was pretty flat. The new battery that gives me 3-4 hours of battery life. That's about right for an older laptop without a U-Series processor.
The old e530 had Win 7 on it and I knew Win 7 was ending support soon. I figured Win 10 would push the CPU, so I thought about Linux. I did research and asked r/thinkpad on Reddit to help me find a Linux distro as a total Linux noob. I settled on Linux Mint Cinnamon. It looks like Win 7 and is stable without a big learning curve. All I had to do was get Ubuntu specific wi-fi driver (Mint is uses Ubuntu as its base) and I was good. Everything else worked out of the box.
The e530 only uses 2 gigs when I am watching TH-cam at 480p and it's 25 seconds to the desktop from a cold boot. The old ThinkPad is a backup machine that I use for word processing and web surfing. So my upgrades have added a few years to an old laptop.

My laptop is just for writing, so it doesn't have to be gaming fast. I added another 4GB of RAM for a total of 8GB. I already had a couple 1TB SSD's in my parts box, so replaced the 320GB hard drive with the first 1TB SSD. Then I took out the CD drive and replaced it with a second 1TB SSD in a caddy.

i have an older hp/compaq 6530s laptop since 10 years now and bought it when it was first released in 2009. works fine and to all: the golden word for speeding up older laptops is RAM :-D Upgrade it to the MAX if possible since, like in my case, DDR2 RAM, is now much cheaper than 10 years ago and there are still plenty around.
I upgraded mine to 6 (max is 8gb) and it is totally different now. runs Windows 8 pro, very smoothly, it has and old intel core duo with 2.10 ghz and is totally usable. The graphics performance really sux though (intel mobile 4 series .) and it has trouble with opengl but some games from that era run OK but on the LOWEST settings, like COD4, Fallout 3, bioshock or even Arma 1 etc. so, again: it is not so much the CPU it is the RAM RAM RAM that is much more important and if you can install a SSD, that's even better of course, it will give you a boost in performance ;:D. No need to buy a new laptop every year, really ;-)

So, I would like to do this to my rarely used but sometimes essential laptop. There is a program I use on it that will not run on W10 but I must be able to use that program until at least April/May 2020. If I upgrade now including cloning my current drive and updating to W10, would I be able to have W7 on one drive and W10 on the other both operating - at different times of course - with the same W7 original keycode? I could of course hold off on the W10 upgrade until march but the risk will be that it will no longer be free at that time?

Saying that an Intel is preferable and that having an AMD is the budget option as a casual explaining to a casual audience really does a disservice to the industry in general going forward. Where do I start on this dumpster fire. Let's start on the CPU. AMD CPUs in many cases are better than Intel CPUs. Intel CPUs of the same basic specs of the AMD chip in the laptop have exploits called Meltdown and Spectre that AMD chips don't have. Microsoft issued a software fix for the exploits which actually slow the computer down.
I am not sure why people want to use SSDs for system drives as the system drive is written to constantly and SSDs have a finite times that it can be written to (on some drives that can be as little as 3000 times while others as much as 100000 times). The best use for a SSD is for storage that you are going to write a few times but want faster access to to the data.
Upgrading laptops is not an one size fits all.
