EJ Tech yes in older laptops that was used, but nowadays we tend not to have optical drives as they are too thick, and most half decent laptops have 2 drive bays anyway. I mean at least an m.2 plus a 2.5" sata, not necessarily 2x satas
Humphrey Bergquist I disagree. I love being able to game on the go at 60fps on average (not so much newer games, but my laptop is 4 years old). Sure, I can't run at 4k, completely maxed out all the time, but as long as it looks halfway decent, and I can get 60fps, at 1080, I'm fine. Plus, I need the laptop for school, so I have it with me all the time and I can game in class, and yes, I have.
I put a Kingston UV400 in my laptop about a week ago. I'm really impressed with it, the build quality is excellent and the speeds are great. I think Kingston wants to turn their SSD image around after the drama with the previous series.
Great Video, correct advice. Since Laptops are priced higher than a similar Desktop it makes sense to upgrade your Laptop; the easiest way to ensure that is going to work is to *plan* before you buy.
Yes it is possible sometimes. It depends on the OEM or retailer who is selling it. Some install the most powerful that the motherboard can reasonably support, few do not.
I upgraded my ram from 4 to 12Gb by adding another 8gb then i removed my optical drive, transferred my 1TB HDD in its place. Then placed a 240 SSD in the place where my 1TB HDD used to be. My SSD has my OS and other productive apps The HDD became my storage and my games are there too. :)
Some laptops can have their processor upgraded as well. There is also a GPU to that wifi adapter slot devices(taking away wifi unless you get an adapter) and a PCIE adapter for the expresscard 54/34 slot(if your laptop has one. You might can get away with the pcmcia to expresscard 54 adapter. who knows what performance loss that'll have) but either option will be at lower PCIE speeds, which could seriously limits your card options & the overall benefits of the upgrade. If I had the money, I'd buy some of these things to test them
I had an eGPU using a GTX 970 connected to the express card slot of my laptop. Serious throttling on the GPU and only getting something like 40% of it's overall performance due to the one link. Any extra hook-ups to the laptop would have helped, but I had none available, and most laptops don't. Thunderbolt connectors are probably the fastest connection out there, otherwise laptop manufacturers need to incorporate some way of leaving available a 16x 3rd gen PCIe slot somewhere on a laptop for us poor consumers.
That's about what I expected out of that. One can probably get a lower end GPU instead with similar results at a much lower cost. Something like this I'd put a 50-100 USD card off ebay into and it'd be a great boost for something with 5 year old onboard graphics. I wish I had the money for one cause I have an old gtx650 I could test with it in a build I made back in 09 to see how big the difference is. I really wish these manufacturers would give us more to work with, Hell, I wish more would give us the expresscard or make a more modern version.
Forgot to mention that if you can upgrade your MXM GPU, and sure that it works (i.e. some laptops have whitelists for only certain GPUs), you'll have to double check that your current heatsink will be sufficient enough for it. It's really not worth going through the trouble if you want to upgrade it. Besides, the costs for MXM GPUs are pretty overpriced a lot of the time.
Adam Hosein well yh...but thats not an upgrade, its kind of a downgrade actually since you have to remove the wireless card to free up the pcie, and even then connecting the desktop gpu in a dock is just like adding a peripheral rather than an upgrade to the laptop.
Ethernet or a wireless dongle could replace your wifi module (8 bucks on amazon and at the same connection speed as well), and I could say the same for what he suggested for the gpu, the razor core uses thunderbolt and as such just a peripheral, the other solutions are proprietary so I will ignore those. FYI, I am currently running a desktop GPU on my laptop (gts 250 on a dell xps 15).
Adam Hosein but once again isn't an upgrade because you're just swapping out one port/connection in exchange for another. So adding a dongle would lose you a usb port, an ethernet cable limits you to somewhere close to your ethernet line. These are all just compromises you have to make to get something else, its not an upgrade its an exchange for something else
USB hub to be able to use more USB devices. Obviously you are making compromises, you are trying to use a full fledged desktop GPU on a laptop that otherwise would be impossible (unless you got thunderbolt 3). And yes it is an exchange to increase the uses of your laptop. I don't game on the go so this works for me, there are a lot of people who undergo this procedure to have a capable gaming system without having to build a desktop when most of the components already exists in the laptop.
Adam Hosein which is my point, once again, adding peripherals aren't upgrades. And adding an external gpu isnt an upgrade, just like adding a separate monitor, mouse or keyboard aren't laptop upgrades either.
A lot of laptops also let you upgrade the WLAN module which could increase wi-fi range/speed, reliability, and even add bluetooth functionality if your system doesn't have it already.
I originally learned to upgrade my laptops by tearing apart other laptops I got for free... I actually got the components for my laptop upgrade from said free laptops. People think a bad hard drive is the end for the whole machine.
I'm pretty sure some places would clone it for you (at a cost, maybe $20) if you mention that it's for a laptop. A good associate will tell you it's a necessity if you're doing it to a laptop.
Samsung SSDs come with a booklet on how to install (and clone), plus a CD with cloning software and other utilities. AFAIK, Intel has the same things included.
Nice video, I recently upgraded the HHD in my laptop to and SSD. I used a Hard disk caddy (look it up on amazon). It is a nice little caddy, that allows you to change the optical drive for a HDD/SSD. So now I'm running the system and programs on the SSD (much faster) and still have the old HDD to store data on. Lets face it when was the last time you used the optical drive for anything? :) I've also read that some laptops allows you to swap the optical drive for more battery capacity. I went with the SSD and a caddy, glad I did, now my laptop can go 3 more year :D
Absolutely hate locked systems. Tried adding RAM in an old laptop (Because I had some around) and nope. System wouldn't allow it. On my current one though (Dell Inspiron 7520) I managed to add RAM, swap out the optical drive for a second HDD bay and drive and replace the wireless card to a wireless AC one. Love it.
Ummm.... when you add a RAM to an old laptop you need to push it rather than just put the ram and click it. My friend who has an up to date laptop that tries to put a 2gb ram on my pc even don't know how to add those RAMs.
Playing around with a discarded HP G6 with an A4-4300M APU, I noted that it had a socketed CPU. A quick search on google and ebay and I ended up with an A8-4500M for $10. CPU and GPU upgrade in one. I slapped in 8GB of DDR3 I had spare and an old SSD and now she is flying. Easy upgrade for those with a G6. Apparently it can take up to n A10-5750M but those are more like $70+ so I didn't think the extra 20% or so perf was worth it.
No mention of that fancy little thing you can stick an ssd in and change out your cd rom for a ssd, those things run for 10 dollars as far as i know and that's adding to the storage not subtracting for faster

you can up grade the cpu aslong as the motherboard/cpu cooler will support it and if the cpu isn't a BGA type cpu meaning that the cpu is soldered to the motherboard
Use CPU-Z and see if it is using a PGA socket. Accessibility may also vary. Some laptops are easy with a large access panel, while others need a full disassembly to access the CPU.
you should add one more thing when talking about upgrading laptop : You can replace the optical drive with additional 2,5inch drive HDD or even SSD via an adapter caddy!! I never use my optical drive for years and just found out about this. Your battery life will take a significant hit though...

Wired Beats I don't think you just download RAM |:3

You can have both an SSD and a hard drive in a laptop. I removed my optical drive and use a caddy to place the SSD in the space.
I have not seen one of those in years!
you cant always do that, most laptops dont have a disc drive, and most dont have 2 slots that are smaller.
EJ Tech yes in older laptops that was used, but nowadays we tend not to have optical drives as they are too thick, and most half decent laptops have 2 drive bays anyway. I mean at least an m.2 plus a 2.5" sata, not necessarily 2x satas
There are still a few medium sized laptops that have an optical drive. But yea some have an M.2 or mSATA.
ASUS ROG GL552 and GL752 still have it
thats why i buy from asus so i can have 2.5 HDD M.2 SATA III and 2.5 SSD at the same time :)
