Back when I was a teenager in the early 80’s Ted Nugent played a concert in my hometown of Springfield, IL. My friend and I couldn’t afford tickets but we loved Ted so we sat outside the backstage doors just to listen. After we had been sitting there awhile, two guys in suits walked out and asked us why we were weren’t inside. My friend and I looked at each other because we thought maybe we were in trouble for hanging out behind the building. We told them it was because we didn’t have any money. We thought they were going to tell us to leave for sure, but instead they handed us two tickets and said, “Here you go, kids. Compliments of Ted Nugent.” We couldn’t believe it. And they were great seats! So if Ted ever reads this, tell him Todd and Pam said THANK YOU! It was an incredible show and a memory we’ll never forget.

Yeah and people say he is an average lead player, just cause of his politics. Man in the 90's with Damn Yankees? Ted was a lead playing dude like one you never heard before better than most of your bigger names out there.

Good observation. Fine motor skills in guitar players tend to go to hell eventually, particularly if that player had a substance abuse history. Ted still maintains good control, probably due to the fact he didn't drink and use drugs.
Jimmy Page, on the other hand, was a hot mess by the late 1970s, due to heroin and alcohol ravaging his nervous system. His picking accuracy and steadiness of vibrato became a mess, and never fully recovered.
I remember hearing him play "Thank You" during the 1994 reunion with Plant and thinking how "herky jerky" his phrasing and vibrato sounded, realizing that he was actually a more skillful player earlier in his career.
There is a price to be paid for poor lifestyle choices.

Yeah, I learned more from this video than from heaps of others where the "teacher" has to show guys who should be in the woodshed practising, just so they can play ONE song that's above their pay grade. Get yourself a practice tool like a Dr Rhythm drum machine that has a bass happening as well as a drum beat, and play to that for an hour a day.

Ted could always play the man notes. I remember in the late 70's when my older brother came home with the Double Live Gonzo album. The day I heard "The Great White Buffalo" was the day I became a Nugent fan. That dude is sorely underrated. Thanks for posting the video! Always nice to be reminded the dude still has fire in his fingers.

Ted Nugent has it all, great riffs, killer songs, and overall a badass tone truly one of the all time great guitarists.

He had a huge career in the 70s and 80s where he was valued and a very important musician back then. He’s one of the best guitar players period. And was definitely recognized in his prime. This video reminds me of a funny story involving Edward Van Halen. At the time, the Van Halen band was just getting its footing on a national scale and was Ted's opening act for his tour. During one of Van Halen's pre-concert practice breaks, Ted asked Ed if he could play using Ed's guitar and amp set up to capture that "Van Halen sound." Ed was happy to oblige. However, the reality was that Ted still sounded like Ted, even though playing with Ed's exact setup, with just a little of that brown sound edge added.

Amen Paul. Politics has no place in music or sports. Anybody that tries to bring politics into any of the two, is a t-total miserable, useless, and worthless, unforgivable asshole. They all need to shut their holes and play their music. That's why we buy their music to be entertained. David Gilmour started talking about politics at a Pink Floyd concert..He was way out of line. People pay big money for good concert seats to be entertained. We don't want to hear their political opinions out of their mouths. That's their private personal business. Not ours. Ted Nugent is a Guitar God, and will I do respect his beliefs and big stance on the second ammendment constitutional rights, regarding the Right To Bare Arms, I pay little to no attention to it. I am amazed and greatly inspired by Ted and Derek's musical talent, regarding their guitar playing. David Gilmour conveniently forgets who he is, what he is, and where he came from. He will most certainly destroy his legacy of guitar playing talent, if he hasn't already, until he learns to keep his mouth shut about his political beliefs. The man is delusionally grandiose, and lacks humility..The only place a musician has the right to convey their political beliefs, is in a political forum, or if they're specifically interviewed about their political beliefs and political stance. Nugent will always be known for his talent. Us, average everyday people, that are hard working tax paying citizens, made these talented musicians rich, therefore, we can make them or break them, should we all decide to stop buying their music. Period!

It is my favourite guitar sound and I love playing songs like Stranglehold. Thank you and Uncle Ted you are a legend!
Saw him in the 70s at Maple Leaf Gardens. We were on the top row of the opposite end of the stage and the smoke was thick...and then we see this guy in a loin cloth swinging across the stage 🤣 ...all while singing a song he wrote called Wang Dang Sweet Poontang (look up the lyrics haha) 😜

Strings1043 and peter missed the point , justin and I find soul a more talented and rare style than the technicalities of EVH . Phil Anselmo said it best in an interview . Yngwie Malmsteen can play Sweeps all he wants ,does he have the soul that Dimebag had? NOPE. Not even close. What kickass guitar legend doesnt have a slight bit of arrogance within his ego? So ,plainly , EVH can sweep and hammer all the fuck he wants , im still more impressed with simple cords being sent out into outer space through a man putting his SOUL AND HEART into bending and winding the simplest notes into some of the most iconic riffs to ever be played . "All he knows is box pattern style" . Similar to saying dumb shit like "Angus and Acdc only 3 chords" , but your ass is head banging all the way through every lick that man's fingers can produce . And yeah ,I prefer Angus over EVH too simply off the soul and rhythm . Couldn't give a rats ass about technicalities .

Everything the music indusrmtry and hollywood are into! He's just a cool family man that values traditional conservative beliefs. I don't see a thing wrong with his politics! He's about freedom to do as you please! If we let the government get any more power, liberals won't be free do do as they please! None of us will!

It's sad that much of the younger generation considers this style of guitar inept and boring.
I'm 46 a conservative, an outdoorsman and pro 2A and I rock a Les Paul, SG, Strat and a Tele. Classic rock and blues are my music of choice.
Ted is spot on.. Learn the fretboard and the world opens up.. All you need is pentatonic major and minor and the blues scale.
Thanks for the lesson Uncle Ted! You are awesome!

I share your views in general and over time I’ve come to see the pentatonic scale as all you need too. I agree with exactly what you’re saying, just practice the whole fretboard with it and learn interesting combinations by your ears.
My trouble is I struggle to break out of the “pattern box” or muscle memory box. I would really like to be able to articulate melody with more uniqueness and honesty, but so much of my playing noodles around common shapes and can’t get outside the box. Any tips?

Kyle Mills I've been trying to play scales in different places on the neck. Actually using the notes of the scale in other places on the neck. Joe Bonamassa was talking about it in a video.
I've also been trying to add notes per string in the box shapes and make them 3 note scales instead of twos. I got into that when I started mixing major and minor pentatonics. I'm far from a good guitar player. It's just an outlet for me for stress relief. I've really recently started trying to utilize the blues scale and major and minor pentatonics exclusively and learn the entire fretboard.

Ted also wrote all those great songs. So he is and always will be a legend. It's interesting he choose to jam in B. I like that position because it seems to split the neck in half, for jamming.

It was the classic long hair, shirtless, headband, furry tail, white pants and white Gibson Byrdland Ted. He started out appearing on top of the amp stacks from the back and jumped off onto the stage. It was a great show.

Learning the blues scale is what finally opened a huge door for me and changed everything about my playing. I never cared about scales for years, a big mistake. After already having years of being a hack player with a bunch of experience playing guitars and knowing the fret board, to a degree, learning the blues scale allowed me immediate success for improvised solos. Anybody who doesnt know any scales, learn the blues scale. I wish it was pushed on me earlier by someone.
