  • Nothing serious, Mom was just having one of those days. Also, he can be a handful...
Luca has now mastered the tricky gate and was a little less shy today, getting somewhat closer to take a good look/sniff at me.

It's hard to see what provoked the outburst but I think it's possible that Milo is heavy enough now that if he's not careful he could easily knock his poor Mom off the railing. He'd never hear the end of it, poor guy...

Sadly, when she makes them go on their way, to make their own territory... (They're used to people.)
They will go into neighborhoods and become what fish and game calls 'nuisance bears'. Hopefully, they will be tranquilized and brought deep into the forest, where they will hopefully stay and live a long life. Sadly though, many nuisance bears are euthanized because they find their way back to civilization (they know this because they tag them, when they're first caught)... Because they cannot be rehabilitated.

The berries on the bush outside? Fine. But once they found the bird feeder? It should have come down immediately and never been filled again.
I used to live there and this is a huge problem. I'm sure it's incredibly endearing and delightful for him but he is setting them up for failure.
The first time I had bears tear apart my trash I never set another trash bag out again until the morning of trash pickup. The mom and her cubs tore apart my trash and scattered it across the entire yard. They were a particularly fond of pizza crust and yogurt containers. And while that was great to watch I knew it was incredibly unhealthy but there was nothing I could do at the time- my newborn baby was inside the house with me. After they left I went out and picked it all up and never set the trash out again because I knew that I would be setting them up to fail if I ever let them consider my house a feeding source.
If he still wants to have a bird feeder he should have a pulley system VERY high up in a tree. That's really the only way to do it once you've got bears frequenting your property. Or hanging on an upstairs windowsill. Personally, I wouldn't even put a feeder out for months after I'd seen bears eat out of it. Especially cubs, because they're JUST learning where to find food, and now they associate humans and front porches as potential feeding grounds and aren't going to be frightened by a human being sitting there!
      It's reckless.

You can do some research into the background of this particular situation, Ashville, NC coexisting with the bears. The area is home to a sizeable bear population and the entire community has generally tried to coexist with the bears.
There's enough bears and the area is rural enough that it's going to be nearly impossible to avoid human and bear contact without eliminating bears. Bears by and large aren't going to fear people, anyways.

When you mention securing possible food sources, you're suggesting that the homeowner either not put out birdfeed or do so in a way that the bear can't reach it. That's a sensible suggestion.
However, you mention not acclimation bears to humans, you're suggesting that the homeowner not enjoy time outside on their porch. Being able to be outside and near nature is probably a main reason for living there.
The bears become less intimidated by humans because they already know that there's food to be found and when they do manage to get into it, they're rewarded for the coming near humans.
The bears are going to investigate the human structures, regardless, because we've built into their range.
In a cursory search search the only thing I'd found on bear culling in western North Carolina was that they hadn't had an incident requiring such for years.
It so uncommon that I didn't find anything discussing an incident of culling. So, I thing you're going a bit "millennial think" on the issue and being overly concerned (aka "triggered" for millennials) about something that isn't actually an issue.
Further, in an incident where a homeowner killed a nuisance bear that had actually damaged his property, breaking into home and car several times, a local wildlife agency had been raising funds to send the cubs to a sanctuary to be raised for a year before being returned to the wild.
Looking into actual, recorded events doesn't bear out your concerns, not even if I used capital letters in the search box.

However, I'm always concerned for human safety because when you find yourself crossing paths with a bear while out on the trail or they come sniffing around your tent at night, I always choose to exercise the best deterrents available for the situation in order to always reinforce that when they see a human they better leave and go the other way. Teach them to have a healthy fear of humans. It's for their own good and ours as well. In the past 20 years or so I recall two instances of where two older women (unknown to each other and different locations) were in the habit of leaving scraps on their porches for the bears and then they'd watch from a window. Both wound up getting killed by bears.

Or maybe he leaned against her trying to reach the feeder. They are always enjoyable. Especially Luca climbing over the gate! Simone could probably use some alone time! The best videos! • @Erin-Thor

@@supportyourtroopsathletes6460 - True, however evidently in NC where this is, exists a unique situation. The bears there aren’t as aggressive as western bears throughout Colorado to Alaska. They have posted a few links to studies on this “phenomenon” of human/bear peaceful coexistence. This guy (channel owner) even leaves food out for them, looked like a potato to me but I could be wrong. I, like many, thought this to be insanity... however the links seem legit, and there does seem to be some merit to the non-aggressive bears and the common interaction with humans in the area. I mean if you think about it... this gentleman is filming from a bench on his porch mere feet away from a bear and her cubs. That alone is very different from the bears in our area.
