Only apple could pull this off. They could strong arm the record companies to have lossless without charging extra. I'm glad someone made the record companies sweat.
And I'm very glad they did. Paying for anything less than lossless is a scam in my opinion. If I'm paying for music, I expect no less than every last bit of detail available. MP3 and other lossy formats are fine if they're free, but unacceptable for paid services, even at 320kbps.

@@Teddy-rh8vl the record companies are pure evil and anti consumer. They demand too much from artists and customers while they do the bare minimum. They stifled technological development in consumer electronic and data storage. Apple is also not a great company, but I'm not giving them a free pass. They could still do better by the artists.
Edit: or Apple could enable lossless on other devices, I'm paying for Apple Music and I can't use this "free"
@@Some-guy-on-the-internet I'm not an audiophile and I'm one of those people that can't tell the difference between 128 and 320 MP3s. That said, I find it really sleazy that record companies want to charge more for higher end streaming services to get lossless files of the songs. It's the same damn song, why should it be so expensive. RIP Pono and Tidal (I don't even know if Tidal is dead yet) Apple doing this move is a great shove it to the music industry trying to nickel and dime consumers.
@@yy-hj4br Tidal is still around but they've been losing customers as a result of them forcing MQA onto their users even if they try to disable MQA and only enable lossless. Tidal's been on a downward spiral ever since they started shilling for MQA so I wouldn't be surprised if they go under in few years. They seriously need to get their heads out of their asses before it comes back to bite them.

Thanks for the shout-out (again!), Jonathan. Very kind of you. It was especially surprising considering my own Apple Music video wasn't all that. I tried - and failed - to communicate how the following tech comes with Apple Music hi-res-related gotchas:
macOS (no automatic sample rate switching)
Apple TV OS (capped at 24/48)
Apple AirPlay (capped at 24/48)
Android OS (resamples everything to 48)
Android TV OS (resamples everything to 48)
Apple Lightning to 3.5mm DAC adapter (capped at 24/48)
Only iOS and iPad devices running *external DACs* via the Lightning-to-USB adapter will handle Apple Music's hi-res supply as it should be handled.
BUT when we factor in a) just low little hi-res there is out there and b) how little that hi-res adds to the listening experience over and above lossless CD-quality streaming, IMO the hi-res juice really isn't worth the squeeze.

I have an expensive stereo setup but still not sure how to listen to Apple lossless. Cambridge audio set up cxa 81. From the reviews I see the only option is connect my Mac directly to the setup😳😳

Select the Playback tab
• Under Audio Quality, enable or disable Lossless
Here, you can set default qualities for different connection types, including "Lossless," which will give you music ranging from 16-bit/44.1 kHz (CD quality) to 24-bit/48 kHz
While using Tidal I remember stepping on an album, which had album photo written the word "mono" (because album was old enough to be on mono vinyl) but it was remastered into Dolby Atmos. Very satisfying listening to. I am guessing it could be Jacksons5 (all 5 were separated in every single speaker)

I recently got back into classical music after probably a good decade and a half of enjoying other genres; and now this Dolby Atmos update coincides with some albums I’ve been listening to, and wow! Yeah I can definitely attest it’s absurdly AMAZING when done right. There’s still a lot of lackluster tracks, but in the hands of a good studio engineer; there’s nothing else like it man.
I was expecting the Dolby Atmos/Spatial audio to be a complete gimmick for music. But I just heard More Than Words by Extreme for the first time again.
I like Dolby atmos, I just switched from iPhone to Samsung and the baked in atmos is awesome

I’ve listened to podcasts from audio engineers who said the SAME thing. Some mixes were terrible and some were phenomenal! What I noticed the most is the volume dropping when using Dolby Atmos, but I also noticed that it depends on the song.
If only LG could've held on a little longer. People will finally start caring about high-quality audio, now that Apple is bringing it to light. LG was the king of audio since the V10. Too bad.

I’ve tried Dolby atmos a bunch over the last few days. No matter how much I listen, it honestly still just feels like a good stereo mix. I think you would actually need an atmos speaker setup to really be able to tell
Atmos just adds height info but through headphones it’s pointless. Two speakers. They just add ‘spatial’ info making it sound more open but really is just out of phase. Sounds awful!
@@grahamlake9728I’ve noticed that listening to Apple Music on AirPods Pro, once you turn head-tracking off (which absolutely no one asked for or needs) and you turn volume normalization off (which keeps stereo mixes at the same volume as spatial mixes), the spatial mixes just sound like quieter phasey-er versions of the stereo mix. This entire spatial thing is a marketing gimmick to get people to switch to Apple Music
Properly implemented - as in a genuine 7:2:4 home theater system - I think Atmos is great. Binaural audio is also great, but for music I really have to question whether 'spatial audio' is more gimmick than a real step forward. I enjoy hearing jets fly overhead but for music stereo is adequate for my needs - multichannel concert footage is one possible exception but I dont think that's what Apple Music is selling here. Thanks for the video.

I’m really enjoying the 24 bit lossless, although I wish there was a way to search for music at specific quality. Would love to make playlists with just 24 bit / 96 kHz or higher
iphones can only play 24bit/48khz anyway

I’m testing the spacial audio feature with the AirPods Pro. This sounds like such a game changer it feels so real as if it’s live. Damn. I’m super impressed just having the clip you added in to this video. I hear the difference.
9:50 Looking at the description of how many songs will fit in 10GB at each audio quality level is interesting. Now the higher storage capacity iPhones might actually make sense to more people.

If you set it to always on, it’ll give you the Atmos mix regardless of whether your headphones officially support it. I”m on a pair of Sennheiser and Audio-technica cans and both work fairly well. It’s really going to depend on the sound balance of the headphones themselves as to how good it’ll sound, though from my understanding the XM4’s are fairly decent.

Just a little comment regarding the iPad Pro and the RME combo. It’s quite the pricy combo. You could get a similar result with an iPad Air and a focusrite scarlet 2i2 card which is also bus powered, for example, and enjoy the same high res lossless audio.

i think the only feature that is impossible to get on android is the spatial audio. so the hi-res lossless will probably come.

First channel that I follow that has actually covered this! Kudos! I transferred my whole Spotify library over as soon as I heard about this! Been enjoying Lossless on every car ride! And even their AAC 256 sounds better than Spotify! I might have to hookup an aux cord to my wireless Sony cans with the 50mm drivers and enjoy Lossless that way!

I'd love for someone to cover some of the downsides and hurdles to this as well. For example, if you have purchased music from iTunes store, that purchased music does NOT get any Lossless updates. In order to get the Lossless version of that song, you will literally have to delete/hide that purchased song from your Library completely and then it will let you download the Apple Music version of it. You then have to do this individually for every single purchased song. You have to hide/delete your entire purchased library and then manually download them all again with the Apple Music version of the song if you want Lossless. Normally, the Apple Music and iTunes Music library has been merged very seamlessly, but this was not well merged. It's impossible to just tell it to download the Apple Music version of the song without going through all these hurdles hiding your purchased songs. It's kind of a mess and I hope they improve this.
Also to reiterate, this means it's not possible to actually purchase a Lossless song from Apple, this all only works as long as you're an Apple Music subscriber, isn't that a little strange? I am an Apple Music subscriber, but I also purchase songs I really like and would want to hear the Lossless version of! An absolute mess for people like me
To begin with, if you are a windows user, Lossless is not available there. And Apple didn't say it was going to upgrade iTunes to Windows. Only android.
