Great breakdown! Personally, I've found it's basically this:
Do you like listening to songs and playlists? Spotify. Do you like listening to albums, making your own playlists, and curating your own library? Apple Music
Do you like to discover music in a manner similar to listening to the radio, where you put something on and passively let the algorithm throws songs at you? Spotify (Apple Music Radio aside). Do you like to discover music in a manner similar to browsing though a music shop, forcing you to take a more active role in discovery? Apple Music
I think both of these comparisons really strip it down to the essentials, because the rest of both of the services user experiences and interfaces are heavily influenced by these differences in philosophy.
On the service's playlists... I think Spotify definitely has a big advantage on algorithmically generated playlists - especially mood/vibe-oriented ones. Apple Music's advantage is human-curated playlists. I find Spotify's "best of ____ genre" playlists kind of horrible, frequently missing out on important artists, or just full-on miscategorizing, whereas Apple Music's obviously human-curated equivalents are significantly better.

Spotify was my music app for almost 2 years, but I went back to Apple Music for 2 reasons: 1) Spotify never (and has ye to) released a HD tier, and 2) - And this was the kicker to move back - They muddied up the Spotify app with the spoken word integration. I listened to a handful of podcasts on the app, but then it would never stop showing me podcasts it thought I might like. I didn't need it for podcasts. And I tried everything to make the interface music-focused. To no luck. So about 5 months ago, I transferred my library back to Apple. And truth is, I'm okay with that. Working great. And the iTunes integration is cool.

As a casual music listener, I don't think you can really go wrong with either service. However, when it comes to managing a larger music library I just find Apple Music so much more manageable. Being able to edit tags, rearrange and add new columns in the Songs view, smart playlists, and iCloud Music Library. Spotify's Liked Songs playlist becomes pretty unwieldy when you start getting 10k+ songs, or even less than that. I try to keep Spotify organised in genre playlists, but it is not ideal. When I add a new song to Apple Music I change the genre and I am good to go. I have a Smart Playlist that shows any songs that aren't in one of my pre-defined genres. Plus if I change a song or album genre in Apple Music, that is all I have to do in the tags and the genres will automatically update. In Spotify, I have to manually drag the songs or albums to the other playlist and remove it from the previous playlist.

YESSS!! I agree with you on the organization aspect. I have about 2,000+ songs on apple music and I love how it is all categorized in my library. I have tried Spotify to see how I would manage all my songs, but no it’s just much more crowded and cluttered. This is a big win Apple Music though. I do have to give it to Spotify with its smart connect system and better music suggestions

    • @sweepingdenver
      @sweepingdenver 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I agree that smart playlists in Spotify would be great. One thing that drives me nuts with Spotify is that you can’t easily see which of your playlists a song is in. This is especially needed because of the lack of smart playlists. I often go through my liked songs to get them into playlists but it’s easy to forget which have already been done, and the Add To Playlist menu doesn’t indicate it.

Apple Music just added a Discovery Station that’s supposed to do the same thing as Spotify is and so far for me it’s pretty good (not on Spotify level yet, but it’s getting closer). In the current iOS 17.1 Beta Apple Music values “Favorites” a lot more (previously loved songs). Your favorites will help the algorithm and you can even filter your library to only show favorites. I’ve switched back and forth between Spotify and Apple Music but I’ve been using Apple Music for the past 4-5 years and I love it and wouldn’t switch back to Spotify

I'm not the one paying for my Apple Music (hence why I use it) but I genuinely appreciate being able to put my own music files on the service and have it sync. There are some stuff I listen to that just isn't available on not just Apple Music, but most streaming services. For example, I bought the Cassette Beasts soundtrack (videogame soundtrack) and it's just not available outside of like, Bandcamp - Steam and YT. Boom, now I have it. A song that is only on TH-cam, boom! My favourite artist does some bandcamp exclusive music, no worries, it can just be part of my library. And if the songs are set up properly, I get lyrics, I get the artist info, I get the genre and all that jazz.
Another example is with my favourite artist, he just released an album. Unfortunately, due to the songs being longer than usual (the longest in the album reaching almost 9 minutes), Apple Music has taken it's sweet time releasing it. No worries, I was planning on buying the album anyway, and now I get to listen to it without worry. Best part, when the album does release on Apple Music, the service will just detect that it's the same thing and wont need to change anything (except maybe do live lyrics).
Windows app could use more updated though.

🍎🎵 Apple Music's library customization and cloud library is something I couldn't live without. I have too large of a library of ripped CDs and other downloads from my iPod days that has carried forward over the years. And I have a good amount of albums or downloaded live bootlegs that I listen to regularly that are not available to stream.
That alone will forever keep me an Apple Music user. But I also prefer the separate apps for podcasts and audio books (I rarely listen to those, so I'm glad they're not in the way when I want to listen to music), and I enjoy the Sing feature, as I sometimes like to just focus on the instrumental part of a song to hear parts that I don't always hear. And of course the higher audio quality is the cherry on top!
I also don't care about the algorithm and community features of Spotify. I usually prefer to seek out my own new music, and Apple Music's algorithm, works well enough for me when I want it. And I listen to music for me. I don't need any of the community stuff to enjoy my music.

I have both Spotify Premium Family plan for my kids and I have my own plan for Apple Music plan. I don’t care what extra things Spotify offers if the music quality isn’t good. You can’t beat the Apple Music song quality. Spotify has claimed for years that they were going to improve their song quality but still hasn’t. The ever famous “Maybe sometime this year.”

I've never used Apple music but one Spotify feature I love is that when I'm listening to music in the car and I lose cell service Spotify will still play several songs.
They must be loading the next batch of songs on a playlist or album so that even when I'm out of service I can still listen. I had a promo for TH-cam music and couldn't play anything without a connection. My drive to and from work is rural so I lose my connection and being able to continue to play songs is a small but really great feature. It's to the point where I'm hesitant to try a different app because of this.

@6monthslater (Josh), thank you for such a great comparison and review of these music services. I did, however, notice one thing that was incorrect. You mentioned that only Spotify can work with Amazon speakers devices. Apple has been supported by Amazon for quite a while, I have had Apple Music as my default music source on my Amazon Echo and Show devices, for more than a year. Thanks again for the awesome video!

I appreciate the insights! 😊 However, I’ve found that Apple Music doesn’t seamlessly connect to Amazon Alexa when you press the AirPlay button on your iPhone. Unlike Spotify, which seems to have broader device compatibility. While Apple Music does support Amazon devices, it doesn’t quite connect to them like the smooth AirPlay to HomePod. Just my experience! 🎶📱

Have you gone into your Alexa settings and added/connected Apple Music to Alexa, and set it to the default music app? If you have not already done that, then I can understand your problem. You need to do this setup just one time.
If you have done this, you should see a speaker on top of another speaker glyph icon in the Apple Music app when you play a song. Just click on that a select the smart speaker or group of your choice. Or, you can just say, “Alexa, play [song or album title] by [artist],” and it will switch to playing on that Amazon speaker. I have been doing both of these , successfully, for quite a while.

I switched from Spotify to Apple Music because of the UI and the user experience is just so much better. Shazam for one on my iPhone. Also whenever I plug my phone into my car speaker, or connect vea bluetooth Apple Music automatically starts playing.
