Well, folks if you plan to live in a Spanish speaking country make every effort to learn the language. I migrated to NYC and my first goal was to speak English. Helllo learn the language.
What a great video with valuable insights about relocating to Santo Domingo. You have great communication skills and command of the english language,...better than some native english speakers!
I personally never have been to Santo Domingo I have been to Santiago and san Francisco de Marcoris and La Vega. You will have more fun if you don't hang out in the tourist areas. when i stayed in Santiago I remained in an Air B&B and they had private security the security was very friendly and helped when I asked for good places to go eat and where to get a haircut.t got a discount at a restaurant for speaking Spanish. read some comments where people complained about the language but you are visiting a Spanish-speaking country. i ENJOY YOUR CONTENT on here. yall are doing a great job keep up the good work
I speak Spanish and so that doesn’t bother me ..however,Ive been to multiple parts of DR. I’m from United States but I’m from the south. Where I live it’s very calm and lots of nature. I’m not a city person lol I like more punta cana, veron, bávaro because it’s a little more calmer for me than Santo domingo and I like the beaches in punta cana.
I enjoy living in Santo Domingo because I have my malls walking distance and my gym/pool membership 5 mins commute. I take it easy while driving, period. Good video
I have been living in Santo Domingo off and on for 5 years now and my Espanol is still very limited. I meet plenty of people, mostly at the gym and yoga classes who speak English so building a community was not hard for me as I keep my circle small anyway, but yes English is not spoken too much in SD. Translation works well when I go to the bank and I have my friends find me English speaking doctors and dentist etc. Yes traffic is bad, I do not drive and use uber which is perfect for me and for road trips, I rent a car. Yes the city is big and there is an abundance of things to do all over the city. For me the areas to live and play are Ensanche Naco, La Esperilla, Bella Vista, Piantini and Evaristo Morales. There are so many other wonderful areas also to live and play.
You already know Santo Domingo is my home 😂 I speak and understand enough Spanish that I take Uber, and go to restaurants, dentist etc. alone. I don’t like the traffic and I try not to drive. I leave that to my daughter. I base my flights on the time of day because of the traffic. Boca Chica is my favorite beach. We also hang out on the Dominican side as well 🤗 This time next month I’ll be there. Con Dios 🙏🏾
I love SD, and I agree with your reasons. I do prefer POP. I feel I can fit in SD being from Brooklyn. I tell people to learn the language. My driving scar friends in DR lol
I’m here at the moment and I just left Santo Domingo. And now I’m in las Terrenas and Samaná. I speak enough Spanish to get by. I must say the traffic is a little challenging but I’m from NYC so I can drive anywhere.
I like so much this channel because Norberi speaks very well the Dominican realities both in Spanish and in English so this channel is for Spanish and English thanks you Norberi You are an Amazing Ace follow developing this channel please . thanks you from New York
Sis your on the mark. Some or most people do the easiest thing and give up easily; because they are outside their comfort zone. Why spend all the time, money and effort to move somewhere , then give up.🤔. I guess they never prepared themselves properly.👍👍👍
Pretty fair reasons and hope the people who are thinking about moving here could compare the pros and cons and finally come and live in the amazing first city of the new world.
How are you, you are awesome with information thanks so much. I couldn't live in the big city after growing up in nyc. I just moved here in veragua. Cabarete. Slow paste but traffic is bad too. My question is do they have thrift stores or second hand furniture in santo Domingo cause they sure don't have it here in cabarete
I lived in SD for 4 years. The most difficult thing for me was “se fue la luz” cada dia. Never know when, or for how low, the blackouts will last. It is miserable when hot without air conditioning and TV.
I understand that cab be annoying however there are buildings youncan live in that when the power goes out the generator kicks in. We've been here for 3 years and never been without power.
I live in puerto plata ( San Filipe ) and I shop at both supermarkets, no one’s ever spoke English to me but that’s what I like about it here , I don’t need to engage in small talk about anything, the weather , politics , the price of food in the supermarkets, it’s great, it makes me work a little harder to communicate when I want something but it’s all good , the fall back is no habitat espano ,🤣😅
@@NorberisR Doing great! just working... I just sent a message to Jay right now on a video he did... he was right on with everything he said! I hope we get a chance to meet you guys when we get there for vacation next year!
Hello there. For me, Santo Domingo being the city is packed with a lot of garbage. The city needs to do better in that aspect. The traffic is horrible. But otherwise it’s a beautiful city. I have visited a lot. Thank you for informing others.
Hey norberis, I was looking at a home in Avenida Jacobo Majluta in santo domingo norte. It's a gated community. I just wanted to know if you know if it's a nice area
Mira lo que pasa… Santo Domingo has tremendous potential, it has a lot to offer. But the infrastructure is 20 years behind for its size and population. SD grew too fast and unorganized. It’s going to take another decade for the GOV to organize the metro area the way it needs to be.
The situations most people have is financial. You have your finances worked out you can't pretty much work through everything else if you have an open mind.
Pass on Santo Domingo. Polluted, garbage, terrible traffic. Piatini is nice, clean, but there are so many better areas in the DR. MY opinion. Puerto Plata, Cabrera, Jarabacoa, Constanza, Bayhibe, Samana, even the outskirts of Santiago.
It works for me, I met my wife in Santiago and now she lives in Santo Domingo, what I don’t understand is why Latinas don’t learn English? Especially if they’re dating American men but want American men to speak Spanish, I’ve given up on speaking Spanish, I know the basics and the curse words lol, I have offered to send my wife to English classes but she hasn’t went yet and I’m tired of using the translator lol
If you have children, you can talk to the child only in English and your wife will learn by proxy, even if she doesn’t want to, she will pick up some that way. Start when they’re babies. And, at the end of the day, it’s all about her interest in communicating with you; if she’s really interested, she’ll make an effort and learn; you can also ask her WHY she’s not learning, maybe she has limiting beliefs about herself (I.e. “you can’t teach an old pony new tricks” type of thought). I’ve been learning RUSSIAN of all languages because it’s my husband’s native language, although we communicate perfectly in English; he’s also learning Spanish. When there’s a will there’s a way. Can’t imagine not being able to have a fluent conversation with my husband.
Depends on where in SDE you are but between 15 to 30 mins. There are metro trains in SDE that you can take to Agora but it depends where in SDE you are.
@@NorberisR I want to visit soon to check out Santo Domingo. I am retired. Someone told I can get a reasonable price apartment there. I will need a gated complex. I want to live near the Agora Mall.
You should visit. Reasonable price is subjective so not sure what number that is. But keep in mind Agora Mall is in Piantini and next to Naco and Serralles. Those areas can be pricey starting at $1,000 to $12000 per month for 1 bedroom
As someone who lived in DR, the island has its good, bad, and ugly. You gave some good points in your video. Although I am a proud Dominican American, I do acknowledge some things that irritate the f out of me while I lived in DR. Now, this is something that may not happened to everyone, but one thing I noticed while living over there [sorry for generalizing) is the extreme laziness of some office employees and the irritating incompetence displayed, fed by their laisez faire mentality. Okay, one thing is to be laid-back, but to give vague answers and playing dumb when being asked a question in regards to services not being rendered or poor customer service, the only way to get around that is if you know someone higher up. Cause if you don't, then you're screwed. I know the US is not the best place right now, but if a business/company tried to pull a fast one on me, I have entities like Consumer Affairs, Better Business Bureau, or even the media to have a field day with them. I know DR has pro consumidor, but you better pray that investigator of theirs doesn't sell out to a big corporation and you're left there hangin.
Will never why some American will move to places like the DR from English is not the primary language. There are a good number of Caribbean with a size able English population like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas, US and British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Barbados, Dominica, shoot even Puerto Rico. They can’t use culture as an excuse since a lot of the Caribbean countries have similar cultures.

😄
@pastorjuancordova same goes for all the Latinos that live in NYC and don't speak a word of English.
I wish people would take the time to learn the language. I hate traveling to a Spanish speaking country and hear English.
You seem to be in the minority. There are plenty here who don't speak English.
Exactly
I am in Santo Domingo right now. My spanish is weak but I am out there walking and interacting with local people. And the ladies....
It's good that you are making effort to speak. Dominicans appreciate that.
i can help you learn spanish. I'm moving there in about a week.😀
I really love the whole vibe of Santo Domingo! Look forward to coming back!

I enjoyed my stay there and yes, most people speak Spanish. And the people are very nice and friendly. The traffic is crazy 😂😂.
